But here steps in a mysterious gallant known as "The Laughing Mask," who saves her, for the nonce, from her fate.

When she remains indifferent to him, Collings arouses her jealousy by flirting with Miss Guerra; she responds by romancing De Witt. The reconciliation of the Bertrands, though, causes the Collingses to realize genuine feelings for each other.
- An American book salesman (Lloyd) is persuaded to go to the kingdom of Thermosa to impersonate the Prince. He is greeted by a peasants' revolt before the real prince shows up to claim his throne and princess. The revolution succeeds and the American is elected president of the new republic.

Holmes' foe is called Stapleton and he menaces Holmes' client Lord Henry and his fiancée, Laura Lyons, masquerading himself as Holmes. Hidden passages, hand bombs and mechanical devices abound, reminding more of a serial than of a Conan Doyle story.
