The adventures start when a nasty property developer (boo hiss!) who is also the chairman of the orphanage board wants to close the orphanage and build a factory on the site. The children are sent to Brighton for the day and Norman is very excited because he's "never seen the sea". When they get back, they discover the plan to close the orphanage and must decide what to do.

The longer Ivan stays, however, the more he comes to understand the humor, warmth, strength, and conviction of the British people, and the more they come to see him as a friend, rather than merely a suspicious Russian. As a romantic bond grows between Ivan and Ann, a cultural bond begins to grow as well, particularly as the war begins, and Russia is attacked by Germany.
- A man asks a pretty young woman for a dance and discovers that she has been paralyzed in a fall from a horse and can't walk. Taking pity on her, he begins spending more and more time with her. They gradually become friends, and she soon finds herself falling in love with him. Not wanting to hurt her feelings, he doesn't let her know that, although he's fond of her, he doesn't really love her. Unfortunately, she inadvertently finds out his true feelings and, distraught, flees from him, intending to kill herself.
