- The lives of numerous people over the course of 20 years in 19th century France, weaved together by the story of an ex-convict named Jean Valjean on the run from an obsessive police inspector, who pursues him for only a minor offense.

Verlaine appears in Washington for the official unveiling of the statue for which Mimi posed, meets Mimi again, and unsuccessfully attempts to force her to marry him by threatening to reveal that she was the model for this statue of "the mad dancer." Mimi later enters Verlaine's room and smashes the head of the statue beyond recognition. When the mutilated work is unveiled, the sculptor in his fury relates Mimi's history to the assembled guests. Keith knocks him down. Senator Arundel later bribes Verlaine into publicly retracting his statement, and Keith and Mimi are married.

The cowboy then enters the Santa Barbara polo matches astride King, defeats a persistent rival, Barry Kahn, and wins both the Travor Cup and Nancy's hand in marriage.
- Major John Peel returns to England, following Napoleon's Waterloo defeat, and renews his acquaintance with Lucy Merrall, but she tells him she is engaged to be married. He later learns that, Cravens, the man she is to marry already has a wife. He also learns that Craven cleaned out Lucy's father in a crooked gambling game, and Lucy is paying the price to hold the family home together.
