- A discontented Parisian teenager in search of a father with (Mathieu Amalric) and (Fabrizio Rongione) as his, respectively, callous and gentle alternative paternal options, and (Natacha Régnier) as his single mother.
- American painter Edward Hopper (Michael Stuhlbarg) is working in his studio when a woman he painted (Rebecca Brooksher) calls him and invites him to jump in the painting she lives in. She is bored and wants to take a walk in downtown NYC. She discover life and asks him never to take her back in the painting. But as they have a drink in a diner, Hopper decides he will make her the woman silhouette in his most famous image : 'Nighthawks'.

The woman is undressing inside the house. He falls asleep. She pours wine on his face. A strange visitor dances outside. She stares at us, under the waterfall. They are imagining things. They might be happy in a near future. The film was inspired by a famous Edward Hopper painting, 'Summer evening'.
