- Janina Duszejko, an elderly woman, lives alone in the Klodzko Valley where a series of mysterious crimes are committed. Duszejko is convinced that she knows who or what is the murderer, but nobody believes her.

Prussian anti-Polishism fought with Kashubian patriotism, which in 1939 ended in mass murder committed in thousands of Kaszubians in forests near Piasnica.

While the investigation continues he realizes that all murders are connected to alleged historical Jewish ritual killings. Those murders prompt a wave of anti-Semitic hysteria in the town. In his investigation Szacki must wrestle with the painful tangle of Polish - Jewish relations and real findings of his work - that roots of some legends are fantasy, not a grain of truth...
