- The video begins with a portion that precedes the ballet performance, in which it reveals that the "cardiac dance" refers to the twisting, pulsing rhythms of the human heart in motion. It further illustrates how the heart truly functions - that is different than many in medicine believe. In fact, it is shown that the heart muscle can be unwound, appearing similar to a continuous piece of rope. This is followed by the ballet involving dance, music, and multimedia. Inspired by the work of Drs. Francisco Torrent-Guasp, and Gerald Buckberg (who championed a new approach to dealing with congestive heart failure) - as the dancers and multimedia first illustrate the spiral is a recurring formation throughout nature. This structure is shown to also be in the underlying architecture of the heart: when the heart is healthy, it is conical in shape like a football. The dancers demonstrate that in this form, the heart is able to beat normally in a twisting/untwisting motion. Yet a heart attack is shown to interrupt this normal function, followed by a progression into heart failure - as the heart loses its helical shape and becomes spherical like a basketball. The narrator reveals that once the heart has lost this helical form, it can no longer twist and untwist successfully, becoming less efficient as it loses its synchronous rhythm. Fittingly, the middle section of the dance represents how the lives of people are affected by the tragedy of heart failure, and ends with the decision to have a corrective surgical procedure (originated by French cardiac surgeon Vincent Dor and further pioneered by Dr. Buckberg). The surgery is performed, effectively returning the basketball shaped heart back into its football (helical) form. The piece concludes with the dancers portraying the restoration of this natural spiral form, returning glowing health and joy to the previously afflicted dancer.
