Telling the visitor that a cure for insanity has been found by cutting out an eye of the patient and then slitting his throat, the "director" hurries into another room, reemerges with blood all over his hands and, as blood seeps from beneath the door, incites other inmates who now surround the visitor.

- DirectorHanns Heinz EwersStellan RyeStarsPaul WegenerGrete BergerLyda SalmonovaBalduin, a student of Prague, leaves his roystering companions in the beer garden, when he finds he has reached the end of his resources. He is scarcely seated in a quiet corner when a hideous, shriveled-up old man taps him upon the shoulder and whispers vaguely of a big inheritance for Prague's finest swordsman and wildest student if he will enter into a certain agreement. Balduin rebuffs him, satirically asking his weird companion to procure him "the luckiest ticket in a lottery or a doweried wife." The old man goes off chuckling and thence onward persistently shadows Balduin, exerting a sinister influence over him, while Balduin is still disconsolate under the frowns of fortune. The Countess Margit Schwarzenberg, hunting with her cousin, to whom her father has betrothed her, meets with an accident. She is thrown over her horse's head into a river, but Balduin, who has been directed to the spot by his evil genius, plunges in and rescues her. Subsequently Balduin calls to inquire as to her condition at the castle of her father, the count, but be makes a hurried departure when Baron Waldis arrives, the contrast in their appearance discrediting him. His desire to win the countess and to humiliate the baron becomes so pronounced that he readily accedes to the compact suggested by Scapinelli, the old man, who has so pertinaciously dogged his footsteps, particularly when he learns that untold wealth and power will be his when he assigns to the other the right to take from his room whatever he chooses for his own use as he desires. The agreement is signed. Balduin receives a shower of gold and notes as his portion; Scapinelli takes Balduin's soul exposed in concrete form by his shadow. Balduin prosecutes his love affair assiduously and with apparent success, till the baron is informed of it by a jealous gypsy girl. He challenges Balduin to a duel, and the latter, assured of his superiority as a fencer, readily agrees. Count Schwarzenberg learns of the impending duel and appeals to Balduin not to kill "my sister's child, my daughter's future husband, and my heir." Balduin gives his promise, but when he goes to the venue of the duel he meets, his own counterpart stalking away derisively wiping his gory sword on his cloak. Balduin turns and in the far distance sees the dying victim of the deed he swore he would not do. He rushes from the spot horror-stricken. When he regains sufficient composure he makes his way to the castle of the count, but is refused admission. Determined to explain that he had no complicity in the death of the baron, Balduin climbs into a room in which the countess is seated. She receives him coldly, but soon succumbs to his ardent wooing. Just as he seeks to leave her she notices he has no shadow and that the mirror gives no reflection of him; and she drops back affrighted, the ghastly apparition of himself which takes shape in the corner of the room sends Balduin scuttling away from the castle in a paroxysm of terror. He makes a frenzied flight through a woodland estate and the streets of Prague, but wherever he stops to recover his breath he is haunted by the counterpart of himself. He reaches his rooms and draws a murderous looking fire-arm from its case. As the phantasmagorical figure strides towards him with a sinister grin, he fires, and in a few minutes the blood gushes from his own side from a fatal wound.
- DirectorWilliam V. RanousStarsFlorence TurnerLeo DelaneyGeorge CooperJust as the bead clerk and his assistants are closing up the jewelry store for the day, a package containing a very costly necklace arrives by special messenger. The large safe deposit vault has been closed for the night and the time clock set. The head clerk is fearful to leave the necklace in the store and so decides to take it home. His actions have been closely watched by one of the junior clerks, with sinister and stealthy glances. As soon as the head clerk has gone, his young assistant hastily leaves the store and meets one of his pals, whom he tells about the necklace. It does not need a second glance to learn that his pal is a professional burglar and his interest in the necklace is very keen. Jordan, the head clerk, when he reaches home, puts the necklace in a small house safe. He has an engagement that evening, and is obliged to leave his wife alone. Later she decides to retire, and has no sooner done so than she hears a noise in the room below. She goes downstairs and on entering the room is met by the young clerk and his companion burglar. They seize her and she falls in a faint, continuing their work upon the safe, they have just succeeded in opening it when some medical college students who are on a lark, pass the house and seeing the open window, throw a skull which they are carrying, through the window into the room. It falls directly in front of the burglars who are so startled and frightened at the gruesome sight they hastily retire from the room. Mrs. Jordan, who has recovered, hastily opens the safe, takes out the necklace from the case in the safe and hides it in the hollow of the skull and resumes her position upon the floor. The burglars return, open the door of the safe, take out the case and are so surprised and disgusted on seeing nothing in it they hurriedly take their departure from the house. They have no sooner left, when her husband returns and finds her lying upon the floor. He picks her up. She smiles and then bursts into a laugh and picking up the skull, she quickly extracts the necklace from it. In his happiness at her safety and her cleverness in outwitting the burglars, he can only give her a kiss of appreciation. Police headquarters is notified by telephone and on the arrival of the police, the young fellow is taken into custody and through him, his pal is arrested.

The hot blooded gypsy snake tamer is passionately in love with the attractive young man, hut he does not quite return her feelings. She is hasty and ill-tempered, and not far from being cruel to those depending on her. For the first time the Flying Circus pitches its tents in a small country town. The daughter of the mayor attends. The rope dancer meets her and for him it is a case of love at first sight, and he decides to do all in his power to win her. That night a great fire breaks out in the town, and the flying embers ignite the home of the mayor. The townspeople strive to deflect the flames, but all in vain. The mansion is doomed to destruction and it seems that the mayor's daughter must perish. At this juncture Laurento beats his way through the flames and scales the wall, and, picking up the frantic maiden, jumps to the mesh of telegraph wires outside the window. Carrying his burden over the fragile wires, he saves her amid the frantic cheers of the populace. The grateful mayor makes him a welcome guest, and he soon wins the heart of the young girl, but he has yet to obtain the father's consent. He worries continually about this problem, and not even at home can he rest in peace, for Ula Kiri, who feels that her beloved friend is sliding away from her, keeps tormenting him with jealousy and mockery. At last he plucks up his courage and goes to the mayor. The latter is friendly to the young man, but he compels the rope dancer to leave with a vague promise for the future. If circumstances, should alter. A capital idea strikes the young man to obtain money. He arranges to do a rope dance to the church tower. The circus director is delighted with the idea. The great day arrives, and the people of the town gather around the church. The rope dancer cannot forget Erna's sorrowful eyes and pale face as he walks along the flaccid rope towards the dizzy height. A snake has escaped and its body bars the way to the entrance to the tower. The snake tamer has, in her mad jealousy, forgotten all about her duties, and this negligence now proves fatal. Erna implores her in vain to call back the reptile, as she is the only one that can do it, but Ula Kiri will not listen to her in her storm of jealousy and hatred. But Erna overcomes all difficulties. Her great love teaches her what to do, and thus she saves her sweetheart. The mayor can no longer withhold his consent to the marriage and the same evening the Flying Circus goes away to the other regions, leaving a happy couple in the country town.

- DirectorColin CampbellStarsHobart BosworthTom SantschiHerbert RawlinsonPart One. The first reel opens with the departure of the ship Pharaon from Marseilles, with Dantes and Danglars, the man who later incomes his deadly rival, as supercargo. During the voyage the captain dies. At the moment of his death he gives the charge of the ship to Dantes, and also entrusts to him the secret message to Napoleon, with the imperial ring which will admit him to private audience with the illustrious exile. Dantes succeeds in his mission to Napoleon, and sails back to France with a communication from Napoleon to Noirtier, who dispatched the original missive. On arrival at Marseilles, Danglars tries to get the command of the Pharaon away from Dantes, but Morrel, the ship owner, is well satisfied with Dantes, and gives him his captain's papers. Dantes, after an affectionate reunion with his old father, visits his sweetheart, Mercedes. Fernand, a fiery young fisherman, who has been trying to win her for himself, is much incensed at Dantes' return. He discovers Danglars' enmity for Dantes, and conspires with him and several habitues of the Reserve Inn to bring trumped up charges against Dantes. Their nefarious scheme succeeds so well that Dantes is torn from a jolly prenuptial feast by the magistrate's guards and hustled from the distracted Mercedes' side to a dungeon in the Chateau D'If, in Marseilles harbor. Part Two. The second reel depicts the awful years spent in the dungeon by Dantes. He grows grizzled, ragged and unkempt in the solitude. He manages finally to get into communication, through a secret passage, with a fellow prisoner, an old Abbe, who is being persecuted by political and religious enemies. The Abbe is an eccentric person, whose one thought in life is the recovery of immense buried riches, the key to the finding of which he holds in the form of an old chart. Finally the Abbe comes to die, and entrusts the chart to Dantes. After the discovery of the Abbe's corpse by the guards, and while the latter have gone out to fetch shots with which to weight the sack in which they have wrapped the Abbe preparatory to casting him into the sea, Dantes manages to drag the corpse into his own cell and substitute himself for the remains. He is cast from the parapet of the castle in the sack which is supposed to contain the dead body. He has supplied himself with a knife beforehand, and as the sack sinks Dantes rips it open and swims to an isolated rock, from the top of which he shouts, in his exultation over the escape: "The World is Mine!" Part Three. The third reel opens with the rescue of Dantes from the rock by a smuggler's schooner. During the cruise of the schooner, Dantes induces the captain to put him ashore on the isle of Monte Cristo, the spot named in the Abbe's chart as the depository of the hidden treasure. He discovers the exact cave and unearths the treasure. He makes his way to the mainland and lives in luxury among the Arabs, falling in love with the beautiful slave girl, Haidee. Captain Albert, of the French army, gets into difficulties during an attack upon his troops by the Arabs and Dantes, by his daring, saves his life. Albert, on taking his departure from Dantes' tent, thanks him profusely and invites him in Paris. Dantes, who has seen something familiar in the captain's face, starts when he reads his card, but promises, without comment, to attend the reception at Albert's. Dantes, in disguise, and known as the Count of Monte Cristo, visits Paris with Haidee. There he comes face to face with his old sweetheart, Mercedes, who has married his enemy, Fernand. Mercedes informs him that the young captain, Albert, is his own son. The final scene is a desperate duel between Dantes and Fernand, in which Fernand is killed.

- DirectorMichael CurtizStarsMárton RátkaiAlfréd DeésyLili Hajnóczy
- DirectorDavid MilesStarsLinda ArvidsonCharles PerleyMurdock MacQuarrieThe opening, with Hester condemned to wear the blazing scarlet A, is back in England. It shows Hester in the garden of her home, with her father; and then the introduction of the old medico Roger Chillingworth, who asks for and receives from the father the hand of Hester. There is realism when the Indians rescue the shipwrecked Chillingsworth. He is washed ashore lashed to a mast, the waves driving over him. Again where Hester tells Dimmesdale "Fear not, I'll not betray thee;" where the old man confronts Hester, with babe in arms, and in the secrecy of a cell warns her to tell no one she had ever called him husband; where the minister appeals to Hester, "Give us the man's name and thou shalt go free;" where the minister, conscience-stricken, stands in the pillory and bares his seared breast, not knowing that old Roger is looking on; and where the minister, after Hester had made all plans for their escape, plans which the old man had upset, falls by the pillory and dies in Hester's arms. There are some beautiful scenes in these three short reels.. One that stands out is of Hester, her troubles behind her, standing by the rail of a ship outward bound. Little Pearl is by her side. The photography throughout is excellent. There are two scenes that particularly will stir the emotions. These are where the pastor, attracted to the young wife on sight, reproaches her for avoiding him, '"when thou knowest thy husband was lost at sea;" and Hester, hesitating, responds to the desire of her heart and flies to his arms. Again, years later, when Hester sees the minister dying slowly under the torturing of his conscience and the evil influence of old Chillingworth, she entreats him to go with her and begin life over again, away from the scarlet letter, away from Chillingworth, away from the shame and suffering of the past seven years; as Dimmesdale takes Hester in his arms after all the penance they have undergone one feels that this couple have been more sinned against than sinning, that they have earned the right to have peace, to be by themselves.

- DirectorFrank R. GrowcottJohn McDowellStarsAlbert WardSybil HareOlympia SumnerThe romantic attachment which the humbly born William Shakespeare had for the beautiful and gentle Charlotte Clopton, of Clopton Hall, is authenticated by the letters of many people of the period, and as it is one of the most potent factors in the development of the genius of Shakespeare, it is very appropriate that the film should open with the first meeting of the future playwright and the beautiful young girl. This acquaintance always remained a romantic one, on the part of young Shakespeare, but Charlotte felt the attraction more seriously. Meanwhile, Sir Hugh Clopton, Charlotte's father, who is an ardent Catholic, shelters in his house a man named Carry, who is a traitor to the Queen; he does this at the command of Pope Gregory XIII, not knowing the character of the man he is harboring. Shakespeare, pursuing the apparently gay and thoughtless tenor of his career, but in reality training the great qualities of mind which were afterwards to make him famous, displeases a lawyer in whose employ he has been, and while he is trying to explain this to his mother, a tragic scene takes place, in the assassination of the traitor Parry. Too late. Sir Hugh Clopton learns of Parry's treachery, through Shakespeare's lawyer employer, who informs Sir Thomas Lucy of the plot, and also accuses Sir Hugh of being in it. Sir Hugh's celebration of his daughter's birthday is rudely interrupted by the arrival of soldiers, who are come to arrest him for complicity in the treasonous design. The Queen pardons Sir Hugh, but his lovely daughter falls ill of a mysterious malady, which is wrongly diagnosed as The Plague, but which is a fatal one, nevertheless despite the great danger of infection. Shakespeare bids her a passionate farewell before she dies. Some months later Shakespeare, now beginning to be the great man of his village, champions pretty, shy Anne Hathaway at the Twelfth Night Revels. Their acquaintance ripens, and their courtship is played out in the beautiful environs of Stratford and about the Anne Hathaway cottage. In sharp contrast to the idyllic Anne Hathaway of the courtship, the wedded wife of Shakespeare is undoubtedly the shrew, whose sharp tongue drives her husband to the distraction of the "Lucy Arms." This condition of things, added to the fact that Shakespeare has incurred the displeasure of Sir Thomas Lucy by his poaching exploits, drives the young man to leave home. He decides to try his fortunes in London, so takes leave of Anne and his child and starts away. In London, Shakespeare views the great crowds of richly dressed people with astonishment, but he soon wins friends. The theater, of course, draws him, and outside the historic old Globe Theater he looks upon the scene of his future triumphs. The genius of the young dramatist is soon discovered by the great Lord Southampton, who becomes his generous patron and introduces him to the court of Queen Elizabeth, where he meets Raleigh, Drake, the Earl of Essex, and all the famous political and social figures of the time. The command performance of "Romeo and Juliet" in the Blackfriars Theater which is attended by the Queen and all the Court, marks the beginning of that triumph which was, through the following year, to be the great crescendo of English literature. The final stages of the film show Shakespeare in the glow of middle age. He is dreaming of his past successes, scenes from his great plays visioning themselves before him. The film closes with the fading in and fading out of the bust of Shakespeare, which is in the Parish Church of Stratford-on-Avon.
