Best scripted TV shows
Although there were a few bright spots in the past, over the last 10 years television has transformed from essentially an artistically barren wasteland into a medium that often surpasses motion pictures. Here's what I think is the best of the best, more or less in order.

Confused by his new surroundings, Sam tries to return to the present, but the police force of long ago needs his help.Funny, stylish, keeps you guessing. - CreatorEric Ellis OvermyerDavid SimonStarsKhandi AlexanderRob BrownKim DickensLife after Hurricane Katrina as the residents of New Orleans try to rebuild their lives, their homes, and their unique culture in the aftermath of one of the worst natural disasters in the USA.Doing for New Orleans and music what The Wire did for Baltimore and crack. A look at every level of life in the city after the flood all tied together through music. I love the way the plot will just take the backseat for a couple minutes whenever a good band is on stage. The show makes a compelling argument for New Orleans being one of the most important cities in America. Favorite character: Harley Watt
- CreatorDan HarmonStarsJoel McHaleDanny PudiDonald GloverA suspended lawyer is forced to enroll in a community college with an eccentric staff and student body. The Office, Arrested Development, Community. The funniest sitcoms of the 00's. Favorite character: Abed Nadir

Funny, clever and self-aware. But mostly funny. Favorite character: Maebe Funke
- CreatorJulian FellowesStarsHugh BonnevillePhyllis LoganElizabeth McGovernA chronicle of the lives of the British aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the early twentieth century.I know it's really just another soap opera but I can't help feeling like a smarter, better person after watching it. It's just...classy. Not that it would matter if it wasn't a great show, and it's one of the best. At the very beginning I didn't think I'd ever keep all the characters straight, but they're all so well written and lovable in their own ways that I'll never forget them. Favorite character: the dowager countess
- CreatorRob McElhenneyGlenn HowertonStarsCharlie DayGlenn HowertonRob McElhenneyFive friends with big egos and small brains are the proprietors of an Irish pub in Philadelphia. As much as I liked Seinfeld it always played it too safe for me. Sunny takes the same idea of awful, awful people not doing much to a different level and is much funnier for it. Favorite character: Charlie, but Frank is close

Favorite character: Richard Harrow with Nelson Van Alden a close 2nd
- CreatorVince GilliganStarsBryan CranstonAaron PaulAnna GunnA chemistry teacher diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer turns to manufacturing and selling methamphetamine with a former student in order to secure his family's future.Great chemistry between the 2 leads and lots of moral grey areas. Tons of "oh *beep* moments. And season 4 was a thing of beauty. One of those rare times when the entire thing was planned out ahead of time and made a perfect story arc from start to finish. Only Boardwalk Empire season 2 can compete. Favorite character: Jessie Pinkman
- CreatorDavid SimonStarsDominic WestLance ReddickSonja SohnThe Baltimore drug scene, as seen through the eyes of drug dealers and law enforcement. The description doesn't do it justice. It's a look at Baltimore from every angle, from cops to junkies to media to government to regular folks, all centered around the crack business. The cast is huge and talented. Favorite character: Bubbles. No, Omar.
- CreatorArmando IannucciStarsChris AddisonJames SmithPeter CapaldiThe Minister for Social Affairs is continually harassed by Number 10's policy enforcer and dependent on his not-so-reliable team of civil servants.Foul-mouthed look at Brit politics from Armando Ianuccci. - StarsRik MayallAdrian EdmondsonNigel PlanerThe crazy and sometimes surreal comedic adventures of four very different students in Thatcher's Britain. The first show I ever saw that really felt dangerous at the time. It took the rebellious spirit of M*A*S*H and punked it up a bit for the kids. Not quite as shocking out of context now, but still very funny. Favorite character: Vyvyan Basterd
- CreatorAdam ReedStarsH. Jon BenjaminJudy GreerAmber NashCovert black ops and espionage take a back seat to zany personalities and relationships between secret agents and drones.See Home Movies. Comedy at its finest with wonderful animation.Just put a camera on Karl Pilkington and I'll watch all day. Save out the best bits and animate them and you've got one of the funniest shows ever. If you can constantly upstage Gervais and Merchant you've really got something. Favorite character: duh
- CreatorLouis C.K.StarsLouis C.K.Hadley DelanyUrsula ParkerThe life of Louie C.K., a divorced comedian living in New York with two kids.Louis CK is the funniest comedian working today with the possible exception of Patton Oswalt. He writes, directs, stars in, even edits this show. Complete creative freedom. On the surface it looks like Seinfeld but the emotional risks he takes are amazing and they almost always pay off. Not just another sitcom about a comic.
- CreatorChristopher McCullochStarsChristopher McCullochJames UrbaniakDoc HammerThe bizarre escapades of pseudo-heroic scientist Dr. Rusty Venture, his competent, high-strung bodyguard, and his two overenthusiastic sons.Great sci-fi infused riff on the Hardy Boys, Johnny Quest and others. It's hard to choose.

- CreatorSøren SveistrupStarsSofie GråbølMorten SuurballeLars MikkelsenPolice detective Sarah Lund investigates difficult cases with personal and political consequences. The 1st series was absolutely brilliant. Favorite character: Bill Haverchuck
- CreatorGreg DanielsMichael SchurStarsAmy PoehlerJim O'HeirNick OffermanThe absurd antics of an Indiana town's public officials as they pursue sundry projects to make their city a better place. One of the best ensemble comedy casts ever put together. Took a few episodes to build up a full head of steam then took off and never looked back. So funny. Even made me like Aziz Ansari, eventually. Favorite character: Andy Dwyer
- CreatorRicky GervaisStephen MerchantStarsRicky GervaisAshley JensenStephen MerchantAndy Millman is an actor with ambition and a script. Reduced to working as an extra with a useless agent, Andy's attempts to boost his career invariably end in failure and embarrassment.More guest-star-packed hilarity from Gervais and Merchant. Favorite character: The Agent
- CreatorBen BestJody HillDanny McBrideStarsDanny McBrideSteve LittleKaty Mixon GreerMany years after he turned his back on his hometown, a burned-out major league ballplayer returns to teach Physical Education at his old middle school. The spiritual successor to The Office UK, it could have easily gone wrong but Danny McBride plays Kenny Powers as a hilarious, socially clueless egomaniac but still gives him just that little bit of humanity that makes him lovable. Plus he's not just a blowhard, he really is awesome at baseball. Favorite side character: Stevie

- CreatorPaul AbbottJohn WellsStarsEmmy RossumWilliam H. MacyEthan CutkoskyA scrappy, feisty, fiercely loyal Chicago family makes no apologies. One of those rare instances when the American remake is better than the source material. They're both great, but the US version has such an excellent cast. Funny and sad with complicated characters.

- CreatorDaniel KnaufStarsMichael J. AndersonAdrienne BarbeauClancy BrownDuring the Great Depression, an Oklahoma farm boy and a charismatic minister learn that they are key players in a proxy war being fought between Heaven and Hell.Another one that HBO didn't end right, but at least they started it. Even though it ended up being frustrating there's never been a show with such an...interesting mood. Just a traveling carnival in the dustbowl during the depression would have been enough, but then they added in strange doings. Every episode just had this feeling to it. Magical and fascinating. A lot like Lost in that the answers could never be as good as the questions. Favorite character: Sofie
- StarsSimon PeggJessica HynesJulia DeakinFriends Tim and Daisy, 20-something North Londoners with uncertain futures, must pretend to be a couple to live in the only apartment they can afford.Interesting fact: Not about space!

- StarsEdward James OlmosMary McDonnellKatee SackhoffFollowing the destruction of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol by the Cylons, a rag-tag fugitive fleet of the last remnants of mankind flees the pursuing Cylons while simultaneously searching for their true home: Earth.Another rare instance of sci-fi on this list. I love the idea of a the survivors of a world-wide war who are now homeless and trucking across the galaxy in a giant convoy while the creatures who destroyed their home in the first place are chasing after them. Add to that a bunch of cool twists and some cutting edge CGI effects and you've got a great show, no matter what you think about the genre itself.

Animal figurines and dolls speak to her and force her to interact with people and try to help them. The third great-but-cancelled Bryan Fuller show on here. Someday someone will give him a show and not cancel it right away and it's gonna be awesome. Unfortunately I don't think his upcoming Hannibal show will be the one. Who thought that was going to be a good idea?

- CreatorGreg DanielsRicky GervaisStephen MerchantStarsSteve CarellJenna FischerJohn KrasinskiA mockumentary on a group of typical office workers, where the workday consists of ego clashes, inappropriate behavior, tedium and romance. The Show Least Likely To. There's no way another stupid Americanization of an established non-US show should be good. Especially when the original was as groundbreaking as the Office UK. But somehow it managed to find its own voice. The first few episodes were almost word for word remakes and even they were pretty funny. Then over the years it became its own thing and is still great. When your lead actor leaves the show it's time to pull the plug (Scrubs I'm looking at you) but even then, the Office managed a minor miracle. The superb ensemble cast is so good I hardly even miss Carell. Now if it can just make me stop hating Catherine Tate...Favorite character: Creed

- CreatorRichard CurtisStarsRowan AtkinsonBrian BlessedElspet GrayIn the Middle Ages, Prince Edmund the Black Adder constantly schemes and endeavors to seize the crown from his father and brother.Along with Fawlty Towers, one of the best early sitcoms back when there was no such thing as a good sitcom. Still just as funny as it was then.
- CreatorAlex GansaHoward GordonStarsClaire DanesMandy PatinkinDamian LewisA bipolar CIA operative becomes convinced a prisoner of war has been turned by al-Qaeda and is planning to carry out a terrorist attack on American soil.I'm not sure it can sustain a 2nd season, but I thought it would wear its welcome out after just a couple episodes and I was completely wrong. - CreatorBryan FullerStarsLee PaceAnna FrielChi McBrideA pastry chef with the power to bring dead people back to life solves murder mysteries with his resurrected childhood sweetheart, a cynical private investigator, and a lovesick waitress.Another brilliant, cancelled-too-early Bryan Fuller joint. Whimsical and funny without being saccharine, and the most amazing sets. Every week had a particular look that went along with that episode's theme. It all looked very expensive to do so much work for every episode - probably why it got cancelled right away.
- CreatorLarry GelbartStarsAlan AldaWayne RogersLoretta SwitThe staff of an Army hospital in the Korean War find that laughter is the best way to deal with their situation. If you don't like MASH, maybe this isn't the list for you. - CreatorTrey ParkerMatt StoneBrian GradenStarsTrey ParkerMatt StoneIsaac HayesFollows the misadventures of four irreverent grade-schoolers in the quiet, dysfunctional town of South Park, Colorado.15 years on the air and it's still funny and relevant. Almost always has some kind of point to make but it always makes it in a hilarious manner, not preachy. No other scripted show has ever been this topical - they sometimes make the entire episode the week before it airs.
- CreatorJoss WhedonStarsNathan FillionGina TorresAlan TudykFive hundred years in the future, a renegade crew aboard a small spacecraft tries to survive as they travel the unknown parts of the galaxy and evade warring factions as well as authority agents out to get them.Great Joss Whedon Western-in-Space. He's Dexter Morgan, America's favorite serial killer, who spends his days solving crimes and nights committing them.Fresh and creepy when it started, then slowly devolved into a parody of itself over the years. Seasons 5 & 6 played like comedies where Michael C. Hall was the only one who knew he was now in a sitcom. Season 6 ended with a cliffhanger that promised to finally make the show interesting again and season 7 is delivering so far. Hopefully they'll end it while it's back on top again.
