- DirectorRichard DonnerRichard LesterStarsGene HackmanChristopher ReeveMarlon BrandoSuperman agrees to sacrifice his powers to start a relationship with Lois Lane, unaware that three Kryptonian criminals he inadvertently released are conquering Earth. Most of the new scenes in this cut were shot during the production of the original Superman. They had to be re-written and re-shot by Richard Lester because, under Director's Guild rules, he had to direct more than half the film to be credited. One exception to this is the new alternate scene where Lois discovers Clark's true identity by shooting him. Richard Donner was never able to shoot this scene during principal photography. The take now used in this cut was actually used as a screen test for Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder.
- DirectorFred ZinnemannStarsMarlon BrandoTeresa WrightEverett SloaneA paralyzed war vet tries to adjust to the world without the use of his limbs. In his film debut, Brando was sensational. To prepare for his role as a paraplegic, he spent a full two weeks at the Birmingham Veterans Administration Hospital in Van Nuys, CA. Virtually living as a patient, living in a ward, undergoing therapy, using a wheelchair to move himself around and going with The Men on their social and recreational activities. Brando was able to persuade the paraplegics, some who were at first resentful of the actor and the idea of the film, of the sincerity of the project. Much of the picture was shot at Birmingham and 45 of the patients agreed to appear in it.
Despite his dedication the director and producer(Zinnemann and Kramer) were at 1st worried about Brando's performance in the rehearsals because he mumbled his lines. But with the actual filming of his first scene he reduced co-star Teresa Wright to tears and won one minute of applause from the cast and crew. With no prior film experience Brando had been employing the stage technique of holding back in rehearsals and saving the projection for the performance. Brando was able to immediately prove himself not only a capable film actor but an exceptional one, completely oblivious to the camera and possessing that peculiar aura rare among actors in any media---that of drawing and holding attention merely by presence.
Brando manage to wring some humor out his experience at the hospital. he amused The Men in the 32-bed ward in which he stayed by attempting to perform as a paraplegic on their terms, even going out with them in the evening in a wheelchair. On one occasion , he was with them at a local bar when a slightly inebriated somewhat evangelistic woman cornered them with a long diatribe of sympathy. She labored them with the power of prayer and the value of hope and faith. Brando wheeled his chair close to her, listening with rapture to her encouragement. Slowly and laboriously he lifted himself to his feet. He took a few slow, tortured steps and then burst into a vigorous tap dance! Those who were there claimed the woman fainted! LOL
