- DirectorMichael D MooreKevin LimaStarsGlenn CloseGérard DepardieuIoan GruffuddCruella DeVil gets out of prison and goes after the puppies once more.*1/2
Same as the original, except with worse writing and characterization. - DirectorSidney LumetStarsHenry FondaLee J. CobbMartin BalsamThe jury in a New York City murder trial is frustrated by a single member whose skeptical caution forces them to more carefully consider the evidence before jumping to a hasty verdict.****
Eleven jurors try to convince a twelfth to vote "guilty" on a murder case. As they argue, more jurors start to consider the possibility of the suspect's innocence. A complete triumph. Creates more excitement than every Michael Bay movie combined despite involving nothing more than oral debate in a single room. All twelve jurors are brilliantly acted and include such veterans as Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb. The writing is astounding, and three or four moments are guaranteed bring tears to your eyes. An absolute must-see. On my all-time top ten list. - DirectorRichard FleischerStarsKirk DouglasJames MasonPaul LukasA ship sent to investigate a wave of mysterious sinkings encounters the advanced submarine, the Nautilus, commanded by Captain Nemo.***1/2
An old-fashioned adventure done exceptionally well. The special effects (the giant squid fight in particular) hold up well, proving that you don't need a constant bombardment of over-the-top CGI to make an exciting movie. Silly, but enjoyably so. - DirectorDanny BoyleStarsCillian MurphyNaomie HarrisChristopher EcclestonFour weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus spreads throughout the UK, a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary.***1/2
Takes a "what it" twilight-zone like scenario and delivers the goods. Cillian Murphy awakes to find everyone in Britain gone and then encounters "the infected", essentially fast, bloody, raging zombies. Eventually he and several other survivors team up to find a military base. One of the best zombie movies ever made mainly because of two things: the fully-developed and believable characters and the completely convincing setting. The result is frightening deep down; it's not a movie of zombies jumping out at you but one of an atmosphere of suspense. The final act is a step down (the motivation of the soldiers doesn't make any sense if you think about it), but still good, with great music. - DirectorJuan Carlos FresnadilloStarsJeremy RennerRose ByrneRobert CarlyleSix months after the rage virus was inflicted on the population of Great Britain, the US Army helps to secure a small area of London for the survivors to repopulate and start again. But not everything goes according to plan.**1/2
One of the most lopsided movies ever made in terms of quality. From the devastating opening sequence (possibly the most intense scene ever filmed), the first half is on the level of near-classic. The characters are strong, particularly Jeremy Renner as a heroic soldier and child actors Imogen Poots and Mackintosh Muggleton. The actual outbreak, though absurd, is well-choreographed to a chilling, blood-curdling soundtrack. When the bombs start falling, though, everything that worked quickly dies with a vengeance. The character development ceases, and we're forced to watch the cast fight their way through increasingly absurd situations. Common sense is abandoned, and the movie simply becomes mean-spirited. The climax in the London underground, despite being having a great premise, falls completely flat. The final shots feel like a slap in the face. My advice: stop watching halfway through. - DirectorJon TurteltaubStarsVictor WongMichael TreanorMax Elliott SladeEach year, three brothers visit their grandfather for the summer. He is highly skilled in ninjutsu, and for years he has trained the boys in his techniques.*
Three little kids fight a lot. Average if you're an eight year old boy, otherwise one of the most unintentionally funny movies ever made. Completely devoid of thought or meaning. Accomplishes little more than teaching that violence will solve your problems. - DirectorZack SnyderStarsGerard ButlerLena HeadeyDavid WenhamIn the ancient battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fight against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. They face insurmountable odds when they are betrayed by a Spartan reject.**1/2
A bloody, cartoonishly stylized rendition of the battle of Thermopylae. The Spartans, all insanely well-built, grunt loud catchphrases and decapitate Persians. The action scenes are quite good, but the movie is empty at its core, leaving the viewer kind of sickened and exhausted by the end. - DirectorJames MangoldStarsRussell CroweChristian BaleBen FosterA small-time rancher agrees to hold a captured outlaw who's awaiting a train to go to court in Yuma. A battle of wills ensues as the outlaw tries to psych out the rancher.***
An extremely fast-paced western action movie benefitting from a strong running dialogue between gang leader Russell Crowe and soldier-turned-farmer Christian Bale, who relentlessly sticks by the law for no apparent reason. - DirectorTim BoxellStarsPamela GidleySimon BossellValeriy NikolaevMutant lizards attack a woman on the run hiding out in a cabin in the woods.*
Low budget horror flick. Ponderous and forgettable. - DirectorChris WeitzPaul WeitzStarsHugh GrantNicholas HoultToni ColletteWill, who attends single parent meetings to woo women, meets Marcus, a troubled 12-year-old boy. As they become friends, Will learns to be responsible while he helps Marcus with his studies.***1/2
A charming film that never makes it clear whether the title refers to Hugh Grant's pathetic playboy or Nicholas Hoult's outcast middle schooler. Sharon Small is the Hoult's single mother (Grant's new obsession because they're all so desperate). Turns the rules of genre upside down, particularly in the "will he make it the boy's talent show" ending. Alternately amusing and emotionally affecting, with a strong central cast. - DirectorAlexander PayneStarsJack NicholsonHope DavisDermot MulroneyA recently retired man embarks on a journey to his estranged daughter's wedding, only to discover more about himself and life than he ever expected.**1/2
An aged Jack Nicholson takes a road trip after his wife's death and before his daughter's wedding with a redneck. Along the way he encounters plenty of interesting characters, including Kathy Bates in an oscar-nominated role. All too believable, to the point that Nicholson's character, a twitchy, sad old man, becomes rather irritable and the movie smug and depressing. Nicholson plays the part appropriately (he also received a nomination). - DirectorJames CameronStarsEd HarrisMary Elizabeth MastrantonioMichael BiehnA civilian diving team is enlisted to search for a lost nuclear submarine and faces danger while encountering an alien aquatic species.
- DirectorSteve OedekerkStarsJim CarreyIan McNeiceSimon CallowAce Ventura, Pet Detective, returns from a spiritual quest to investigate the disappearance of a rare white bat, the sacred animal of a tribe in Africa.**
Carrey's pet detective returns to investigate the disappearance of a sacred tribal animal in Africa. Hilarious at first, but the jokes soon become racist and lame. Carrey snivels, contorts his face, and makes fart noises with his hands. Little kids may find it enjoyable. - DirectorSpike JonzeStarsNicolas CageMeryl StreepChris CooperA lovelorn screenwriter becomes desperate as he tries and fails to adapt 'The Orchid Thief' by Susan Orlean for the screen.***1/2
Nicholas Cage plays twin brothers, one happy and one miserable. The miserable one is trying to adapt novel to the screen while observing the lives of drug addicts Meryl Street and Chris Cooper (who won an oscar for his role). Charlie Kaufman's writes with inspired spark, and the film is only unpredictable. The actors are up to the challenge, and it's a pleasure to watch. - DirectorRon UnderwoodStarsEddie MurphyJay MohrRandy QuaidIn the future, a man struggles to keep his lunar nightclub out of the hands of the Mafia.
- DirectorSimon WincerStarsSean Patrick FlaneryRonny CoutteureJason FlemyngAugust, 1916. Using the name 'Henri Defense', 17 year old Indiana Jones has enlisted in the Belgian army to fight in the Great War. After all his commanding officers have been wiped out during combat in Flanders, Corporal 'Defense' is left in charge of what's left of the 9th Belgian Infantry. They are assigned to the French 14th Company and dispatched into the Battle of the Somme. When Indy is captured by the Germans, he quickly gains a reputation as an escape artist, and is sent to the maximum security prison at Dunsterstadt on the Danube.
- DirectorJohn HustonStarsHumphrey BogartKatharine HepburnRobert MorleyIn WWI East Africa, a gin-swilling Canadian riverboat captain is persuaded by a strait-laced English missionary to undertake a trip up a treacherous river and use his boat to attack a German gunship.
- DirectorCharles Martin SmithStarsMichael JeterKevin ZegersWendy MakkenaAn unexpected player joins the school basketball team - a circus dog who escaped from a cruel master.**
A cute golden retriever (is their any other kind?) proves to be a basketball star. Completely absurd, with bland human characters and a rather disturbing subplot involving a wretched clown that belongs in a different movie. As these movies go it's OK. - DirectorMike SouthonStarsDarren J. BirchChristopher BishopTyler BoissonnaultDisney serves up adventure with everyone's favorite golden retriever!*
The athletically talented golden retriever takes on volleyball. Two crooks try to capture the dog in increasingly poorly-filmed scenes. In an attempt to be politically correct there's an Asian boy on the team who smiles a lot and has no lines. Mindless, empty, formulaic, and boring. - DirectorWolfgang PetersenStarsHarrison FordGary OldmanGlenn CloseCommunist radicals hijack Air Force One with the U.S. President and his family on board. The Vice President negotiates from Washington D.C., while the President, a veteran, fights to rescue the hostages on board.**1/2
Harrison Ford plays a President we can all support. As a war veteran, he puts his skills to god use when six terrorists (led by a delightfully menacing Gary Oldman) take over Air Force One. As in Das Boot, Peterson utilizes the small space effectively as Ford fights back and yells "Get off my plane!" Completely absurd, and hurt a bit by a boring b-story at the White House, but a fun ride. - DirectorKen FinklemanStarsRobert HaysJulie HagertyLloyd BridgesA faulty computer causes a passenger space shuttle to head straight for the Sun. Can Ted Striker save the day and get the shuttle back on track - again?**1/2
A near-repeat of the original, except this time in space. The first fifteen minutes or so are quite funny, as are the last (featuring William Shatner as the moon base commander), but the central segments are hit-and-miss. Not bad, but a step down from the original. - DirectorJim AbrahamsDavid ZuckerJerry ZuckerStarsRobert HaysJulie HagertyLeslie NielsenAfter the crew becomes sick with food poisoning, a neurotic ex-fighter pilot must safely land a commercial airplane full of passengers.***
A spoof of airplane disaster movies. Robert Hayes must safely land a plane after the crew and many passengers face death from food poisoning. Absolutely hilarious the first few times you see it; the gags are truly nonstop, though not without some flops. Nielson has his first comedic role. - DirectorJohn WayneStarsJohn WayneRichard WidmarkLaurence HarveyIn 1836, a small band of soldiers sacrifice their lives in hopeless combat against a massive army in order to prevent a tyrant from smashing the new Republic of Texas.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn HurtThe crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin.***
A small crew of a large spaceship face an acidic, carnivorous creature. Startling at times, and occasionally scary, but nonetheless not the classic many size it up to be. Weaver stands out in a solid cast. - DirectorJosh BeckerStarsBruce CampbellRenée O'ConnorRemington FranklinAn astronaut doctor Ivan Hood and his fellow astronaut Kelly return from their mission in space to find the world has been taken over by aliens. Now Dr. Ivan Hood and Kelly must lead a revolution to free the human slaves from their alien masters.*
Intentionally cheesy Bruce Campbell flick. He returns to home after spending years in space to find the planet overrun by giant bugs, eventually leading a very bloody rebellion. Gross and only for die-hard fans of bad Bruce Campbell movies (you know who you are). - DirectorGraham BakerStarsJames CaanMandy PatinkinTerence StampIn 1988, Earth makes the first contact with an alien civilization. In 1991, these aliens, known as Newcomers, slowly begin to be integrated into human society after three years of quarantine.**
James Caan plays a tough detective reluctantly partnered with the first detective "newcomer" (Mandy Patinkin), a mostly peaceful race of enslaved aliens who crash on earth and assimilate into society. Aside from the premise, it's a surprisingly standard cop-action movie, with routine action and character work. - DirectorDavid FincherStarsSigourney WeaverCharles S. DuttonCharles DanceReturning from LV-426, Ellen Ripley crash-lands on the maximum-security prison Fiorina 161, where she discovers that she has unwittingly brought along an unwelcome visitor.**
In one of the worst decisions in filmmaking history, the ship form the end of "Aliens" crashes, killing everyone (including Biehn, who FINALY survived a good movie) except for Ripley. Weaver is forced to wait on a prison colony for another ship to pick her up while an alien picks off inmates and monkish guards alike. Stylistically, the sets and lighting are eerie and cool, but the characters (besides a terrific Weaver) are forgettable, even indistinguishable, and the digital special effects sometimes quite bad. - DirectorJames CameronStarsSigourney WeaverMichael BiehnCarrie HennDecades after surviving the Nostromo incident, Ellen Ripley is sent out to re-establish contact with a terraforming colony but finds herself battling the Alien Queen and her offspring.****
One of the best science fiction movies ever made. Ripley wakes up fifty years later and eventually returns to the alien's planet with a unit of elite, heavily armed commandos. All hell breaks loose, and once the action starts the pacing never lets up. James Cameron films with a fury, and everything clicks. Weaver (oscar-nominated) is tremendous, and the supporting cast (especially Henrikson, Biehn, Goldstein, and Paxton) shines. - DirectorLewis TeagueStarsRobert ForsterRobin RikerMichael V. GazzoA pet baby alligator is flushed down a toilet and survives in the city sewers. Twelve years later, it grows to an enormous size thanks to a diet of discarded laboratory dogs injected with growth hormones. Now, humans have entered the menu.**
An alligator chomps on people in Chicago while the police department tries to find a way to kill it. Not scary or memorable but fun enough for genre fans. A cult classic. - DirectorTim MaltbyStarsCasey KasemFrank WelkerMindy CohnThe Mystery Gang goes to Hawaii for the Big Kahuna of Hanahuna Surfing Contest. However, the gang and the locals find the island invaded by the vengeful Wiki Tiki spirit and his demons.**
Scooby and gang go to Hawaii and encounter the Wiki-Tiki (not a telletuby). Colorful but not very interesting; basically a long episode of the series. - DirectorMilos FormanStarsF. Murray AbrahamTom HulceElizabeth BerridgeThe life, success and troubles of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as told by Antonio Salieri, the contemporaneous composer who was deeply jealous of Mozart's talent and claimed to have murdered him.***1/2
Mediocre composer Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) envies the natural talent of Mozart (Hulce). Salieri is cursed with an ear strong enough to discern the brilliance of Mozart's pieces but little natural talent, eventually launching an elaborate revenge, slowly ruining the young genius's life. The sets are extraordinary, as are the costumes. Unfortunately, the selection of music a bit off, and many of Mozart's best works are ignored: the filmmakers could have used Salieri's ear. A truly brilliant Abraham gives a performance of a lifetime, outshining even the brilliant, childish Tom Hulce (who was nominated) in the title role. Recipient of seven more Oscars, including Best Picture. - DirectorTony KayeStarsEdward NortonEdward FurlongBeverly D'AngeloLiving a life marked by violence, neo-Nazi Derek finally goes to prison after killing two black youths. Upon his release, Derek vows to change; he hopes to prevent his brother, Danny, who idolizes Derek, from following in his footsteps.**1/2
Edward Norton plays a neo-Nazi sent to prison for slaughter, where a (graphically filmed) rape incident leads him to change his ways upon release and to try to guide his son to a normal life. Repugnant and gritty, with a powerful performance by Norton as he transitions from violent racism to guilt-ridden repentance. The story, though, seems lost without a point, other than not to become a skinhead neo-nazi. - DirectorFrans NelStarsJohn BarrettKeith VitaliTerry NortonA kickboxing champion is jailed for a accidental murder with the help of testimony from his enemy - but upon his release, he takes on his nemesis in a winner-take-all fight.*
A guy tries to win a kickboxing tournament. A poorly photographed, bland action movie that drags through a tired formula with no new ideas or insights. - DirectorLuis LlosaStarsJon VoightJennifer LopezEric StoltzA "National Geographic" film crew is taken hostage by an insane hunter, who forces them along on his quest to capture the world's largest - and deadliest - snake.**
Very cheesy giant snake movie. A film crew (including Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, and Ice Cube) meet maniac snake-hunter Jon Voight and face off with the beast. The CGI monster looks horribly fake, but the movie is surprisingly fun and makes good (and surprising) use of its cast. - DirectorAdam McKayStarsWill FerrellChristina ApplegateSteve CarellIn the 1970s, an anchorman's stint as San Diego's top-rated newsreader is challenged when an ambitious newswoman becomes his co-anchor.**1/2
Brain-dead Will Ferrel romp. This time he plays an idiotic, self-obsessed anchor facing competition from and eventually romance with a highly motivated female reporter (Christina Applegate). Very, very dumb (not to mention pointless), but occasionally funny with Steve Carroll getting the biggest laughs as a mentally handicapped weather man. - DirectorWilliam DearStarsDanny GloverBrenda FrickerTony DanzaWhen a boy prays for a chance to have a family if the California Angels win the pennant, angels are assigned to make that possible.**
Unnecessary remake about divine intervention assisting the Anaheim Angels. The angels (led by Christopher Lloyd), who can only be seen by two kids, perform plenty of tricks to help the failing team (coached by Danny Glover). The jokes are few and not very funny, and the sentimentalism mediocre at best. - DirectorWoody AllenStarsWoody AllenDiane KeatonTony RobertsAlvy Singer, a divorced Jewish comedian, reflects on his relationship with ex-lover Annie Hall, an aspiring nightclub singer, which ended abruptly just like his previous marriages.***1/2
A classic. Woody Allen reflects on a past romance with Diane Keaton (as the title character). Allen also wrote and directed, and he utilizes dozens of creative techniques. Keaton's character wears her own style of clothes and lives her own life. The movie, filled with 70's references and lauded primarily for the individuality of Keaton's character, hasn't aged well. Nonetheless a deserved winner of Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Actress, and Writing. Originally filmed as a murder-mystery with a romantic subplot only to be drastically reedited. - DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMartin SheenMarlon BrandoRobert DuvallA U.S. Army officer serving in Vietnam is tasked with assassinating a renegade Special Forces Colonel who sees himself as a god.****
Francis Ford Coppolas' classic Vietnam War film and loose adaptation of "Heart of Darkness". Army assassin Martin Sheen journeys down a long river with a group of soldiers to kill insane Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando). Robert Duvall appears as an officer who "loves the smell of napalm in the morning" and launches a devastating attack against a village to gain access to good surfing waves. An otherworldly, cynical movie drenched with themes of terror and insanity. The film, apparently cursed, was a nightmare to make, as documented in "Heart of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse". Laurence Fishburne, Dennis Hopper, and Harrison Ford have small roles. - DirectorMichael BayStarsBruce WillisBilly Bob ThorntonBen AffleckAfter discovering that an asteroid the size of Texas will impact Earth in less than a month, NASA recruits a misfit team of deep-core drillers to save the planet.

- DirectorRon HowardStarsRussell CroweEd HarrisJennifer ConnellyA mathematical genius, John Nash made an astonishing discovery early in his career and stood on the brink of international acclaim. But the handsome and arrogant Nash soon found himself on a harrowing journey of self-discovery.***1/2
Oscar Winner for Best Picture, Best Director (Ron Howard), Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Connelly), and Best Adapted Screenplay. A powerful movie, no doubt, but with flaws: Howard changed the facts so much that the story is barely true at all, and the happy ending is a bit botched by subpar makeup. On it's own terms, though, it's an excellent movie. Crowe provides a solid centerpiece for the film as his world slowly collapses, and his schizophrenic hallucinations are haunting and convincing. Connelly is exceptional as his wife, who perseveres against all the odds in maintaining their relationship. - DirectorMike JudgeMike de SeveBrian MulroneyStarsMike JudgeBruce WillisDemi MooreOur intrepid adolescent heroes wake up to find their beloved television stolen, and embark on an epic journey across America to recover it, and, who knows, maybe even score.

A big, big movie that attempts to capture Operation Market Garden, an elaborate Allied military campaign to take a series of bridges on the way to Germany that mostly failed due to faulty intelligence and overconfidence. Everything works on its own (the Nijmegan River crossing is a wow), but even a star-studded cast (Redford, Connery, Caine, Hopkins, and many others) can't bring any emotion into the work, and the three-hour epic feels mechanical and disjointed. - DirectorSharon MaguireStarsRenée ZellwegerColin FirthHugh GrantBridget Jones is determined to improve herself while she looks for love in a year in which she keeps a personal diary.
