Sitcoms that should be streaming!
A lot of TV shows never got the chance to shine, and often they were dumped by American networks with unaired episodes left over. In the digital age with countless hours of on-demand streaming shows available, these forgotten shows should be an option.

- CreatorDavid KohanMax MutchnickStarsConstance ZimmerMark FeuersteinAshley WilliamsA talented young TV producer arrives in Miami to revamp the lowest-rated morning show in the country.NBC consistently meddled with this funny sitcom about the crew of a morning show - and then they didn't air half of the second season. An early series shot broadcast in HD, there's little excuse for this show's total digital absence.
- StarsBrian McNamaraChad EverettVincent BerryAn L.A. cop takes a job as a sheriff in an Arizona town that's populated by eccentrics.Completely offbeat and sometimes downright surreal, the USA Network canceled the show almost immediately - though it had a second life in the early days of Hulu. Where and why has it gone?
- CreatorPeter NoahStarsFarrah ForkePeter ScolariStephen Tobolowsky"The guys" at Cyberbyte (a high tech computer company) moves from the old garage to a new office downtown and now they need an office manager. None of the guys have any social skills; Warren, the boss, doesn't know how to complete a sentence. Vic wears his sunglasses at all times. Most important of all, they have hardly talked to a girl before. Carey (the new secretary) on the other hand has no experience in computers but is highly socially skilled and tries her best to understand the guys and to be understood. This one was too ahead of its time, featuring a nearly identical setup to "The Big Bang Theory," but CBS only aired half of the 10 that were made. Character-actor Stephen Tobolowsky completely steals the show!
- CreatorPeter TolanStarsJean SmartNancy McKeonHeath HycheChelsea Stevens is a neurotic, egocentric Martha Stewart-type who finds herself reluctantly answering to naive Midwesterner Jane Sokol after her empire is bought out by another company.Jean Smart as a lunatic homemaker, Nancy McKeon as her office's straight-man. Created by Peter Tolan (Rescue Me), this one got buried by CBS because Martha Stewart was in a tizzy over being mocked.
- CreatorMarco PennetteStarsFred SavageEddie McClintockJane CurtinMitch Crumb is a gay Hollywood screenwriter who returns to his hometown. His mother Suzanne, who tried to take out estranged husband Billy, is newly released and needs his help. They hang out at their family-owned restaurant.Jane Curtin at her very best, as the insane matriarch of the Crumb family, which consists of a philandering father (William Devane), a closeted son (Fred Savage), and a screwup son (Eddie McClintock). ABC screwed the pooch by immediately dropping this one.
- CreatorMarc CherryJamie WootenStarsJudith IveyBeth BroderickHarriet Sansom HarrisFour sisters-in-law struggle to deal with small-town life and their overbearing mother-in-law.No one seems to know why CBS buried their sure-fire-hit on Saturday nights. Created by future "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry, it chronicled the goings on of a domineering mother-in-law and her son's four wives. Both actors and jokes were recycled in "Housewives."
- CreatorDavid CraneMarta KauffmanStarsJohn ForsytheHolland TaylorEve GordonThe exploits of a clueless American senator and the eccentric, morally corrupt people who are closest to him.A terrific ensemble in a funny farce about a clueless Senator and his eccentric family. It's especially clear that David Hyde Pierce was destined for bigger things.

- CreatorMichael DavidoffBill RosenthalStarsFred SavageMaurice GodinYvette FreemanWhat do you do after graduating from university? Go to work. And that's exactly what Matt wants to do. He wants to climb the corporate ladder the old-fashioned way: by working.Brought to us by the evil corporation Upton/Webber, this comedy worked its way up from a mediocre pilot to a consistently-hysterical ensemble show. And then NBC meddled, sort of destroying season 2.
- CreatorPrudence FraserRobert SterninStarsChristopher RichJudy ParfittCork HubbertThis sequel to the classic fairy tale finds Snow White and her family transported to, and trying to adjust to, life in 1980s America.Weirdly, Disney hasn't dusted off this forgotten ABC sitcom about Prince Charming, Snow White, and her wicked stepmother magically transplanted to the 1980s. It's formulaic and the lack of continuity can be annoying in a binge, but the characters innocently and consistently spout out the funniest, most unexpected one-liners. There's some real comedy gold that's been forgotten.
- CreatorAl JeanMike ReissStarsMike DamusJordan BrowerKatie VoldingAfter eating a six-month-old hamburger, Marty DePolo dies and God's Cousin Rod appoints him as his best friend's guardian angel. This popular TGIF show centered on a boy who died from eating a 6 month-old hamburger and was assigned to be his best friend's guardian angel. It's dopey, but smart dopey.
- CreatorMichael JacobsStarsJohn AlesHarley Jane KozakAlex McKennaA single mother reluctantly accepts the services of a genie who's been imprisoned in a magic carpet for 2,000 years. The role of Barbara Eden is played by a dude (John Ales), but the Apple family's Genie is just as lovable. With too many magical family shows on the air at the time (Sabrina, Teen Angel, Meego), this one got dumped too quickly.
- CreatorPeter NoahStarsValerie BertinelliMaurice GodinGraham BeckelAn American woman works at a cafe in Paris.Valerie Bertinelli gets a job in a Parisian cafe. This one didn't click with viewers at the time, but it deserves another look.
- CreatorMichael LeesonStarsPamela ReedBonnie HuntJohn NevilleThe series chronicles the goings-on of various people in a small Pennsylvanian town which is renowned for its piano company.NBC wasn't sure what to do with this bizarre hybrid of sitcom and soap opera about the residents of a town with a renowned piano factory.
- CreatorRobert HornDaniel MargosisStarsJean SmartMary McDonnellDan O'DonahueDot Emerson (Mary McDonnell) is a divorced mother who owns a successful publishing house, for which her best friend, Ellie Walker (Jean Smart), writes best-selling romance novels. Val Brumberg (Faith Prince) enters the picture as Dot and Ellie's old friend from college, who is pregnant and leaving her husband, much to the dismay of Ellie, who wants nothing to do with her. Against Ellie's wishes, Dot lets Val move in with her. With the same basic setup as "Absolutely Fabulous," this one was doomed not by Neilsen ratings but by TV censorship. TV ratings had not yet been established, the producers were pushing boundaries, the network was meddling, and everyone compromised by ending the show.
- CreatorAndy BorowitzGary David GoldbergStarsDoug SheehanLinda KelseyChristopher Daniel BarnesA married couple gives up their high-powered careers to run a daycare center in their home.Everyone seems to remember the wacky "Brady Bunch" episode, but there was way more to the show than that. Most notably Julia Louis Dreyfus, who was dazzling as the bitchy neighbor.
- CreatorSteven LevitanStarsTony ShalhoubNeil Patrick HarrisEddie McClintockA neurotic book editor is paired with an eccentric writer.Tony Shalhoub as a practical-joking Stephen King and Neil Patrick Harris as his nebbish book editor. Yes, it was another variation of The Odd Couple... and a fun one.
- CreatorWes CravenBud WigginsBruce WagnerStarsJeffrey JonesMary GrossJaclyn BernsteinA successful cartoonist is able to physically materialize his wildest fantasies.Wes Craven created this oddity about a cartoonist who projects the fantasies in his head into reality. One of the weirdest shows to ever air... for five weeks. Hard to tell if it was on its way to getting any better since half of them have never been seen.
- CreatorGary JacobsStarsFred ApplegateLane DaviesCleavant DerricksAfter a nuclear Armageddon, the only people left on Earth make their way to the middle of nowhere.Long before "The Last Man On Earth," Fox had this comedy about the eccentric survivors on an apocalypse. - CreatorDonald ToddStarsWilliam RagsdaleSean O'BryanJustin CooperA buttoned-up single dad raises his young son while keeping his hard-partying pro-footballer brother in line. This show was a little too edgy for TGIF, the block of family-friendly shows where it was scheduled. - CreatorGina WendkosStarsNancy McKeonMariska HargitayLouis MandylorIn New York City, friends Annie, Roger, and Elliot work in a personnel agency. Divorcee Didi offers dating advice to the love-seeking Annie and the others.Nancy McKeon and Mariska Hargitay... in a sitcom? This fluffy NYC rom-com didn't make it quite a full season on CBS, but there were some funny moments and a lot of guest-stars.
- CreatorDan GuntzelmanSteve MarshallStarsBill KirchenbauerDeborah HarmonHeather LangenkampGym teacher Graham Lubbock and his wife Elizabeth live in Eureka, California with their eight children. In one of the stupidest moves in TV history, ABC canceled this popular family show, which then went on to have a long life in reruns on the USA network. And then it fell into oblivion. If we can't have a DVD, it should at least be officially streaming... cuz the fan-uploaded videos on You Tube and the like are really sucky quality!
- CreatorLinda Bloodworth-ThomasonStarsDelta BurkeDixie CarterCharles FrankAn eccentric family is forced to live under one roof to receive a share of the vast fortune that was left behind by their patriarch. This spoof of "Dallas" centers on a family who's quarreling over an inheritance. Before "Designing Women," the creator and stars Delta Burke & Dixie Carter worked together on this hilarious show that was gone too soon.
- CreatorEileen HeislerDeAnn HelineStarsJosh CookeJennifer FinniganDarius McCraryTwo late twenty-somethings (Nate and Marni) end up on a mistaken blind date (they were both supposed to meet other people) and find out they're perfect for one another (because they're individually so strange).A neurotic nutjob meets a free-spirited young woman who literally has an old clown living in her closet. Wonderfully irreverent with appealing leads, this one never stood a chance on NBC.
- CreatorJeffrey LaneStarsBette MidlerJames DreyfusJoanna GleasonBette is a wildly successful singer with numerous hits, adoring fans, and showbiz friends who often drop by. Keeping her grounded is her professor husband Roy, best friend Connie, and her thirteen-year-old daughter Rose.Bette Midler sends up herself in this short-lived sitcom, which was abruptly canceled due to its star being a diva (CBS should have seen that coming). For fans of the Divine Miss M, there's a lot of comedy gold.
- CreatorBarry FanaroMort NathanStarsChi McBrideMax BakerDann FlorekThe misadventures of Abraham Lincoln, his loony associates, and the only sane man among them, the President's Black butler Desmond Pfeiffer.A spoof of the Clinton administration set in the Lincoln-era White House which owes a huge debt to "Black Adder," this show was promoted with a black ad with bold letters which read "CRITICS HATED IT!" And I won't get into the NAACP's reaction. Unpretentiously stupid, this little gem was canceled after only a month, with unaired shows that still haven't been seen.
- CreatorChris HenchyMarco PennetteStarsTeri PoloDavid SutcliffeDanny ComdenA junior high school teacher has a whirlwind romance with a movie star. The schoolteacher marries the movie star. Loosely based on writer Chris Henchy's whirlwind romance and marriage to Brooke Shields, it was a bit shocking when this sweet rom-com didn't get a second season renewal.
- CreatorJohn MarkusStarsKristin ChenowethJon TenneyLarry RomanoHeart of gold southern secretary working in the big city.Prior to being famous, Kristin Chenoweth starred as a variation of herself: a struggling actress trying to make it on Broadway. And soon after the show's cancellation, she finally struck it big. The sitcom's a bit too formulaic, but it's easy to see why she went on to become a star.
- CreatorMarc CherryTony VitaleStarsJason BatemanDanny NucciAlec MapaWarren Fairbanks is a gay Greenwich Village writer. His sexual orientation isn't suspected initially by the fellow who has responded to his newspaper ad for a new roommate. Though the road is bumpy for them at first, they strive to reach a common understanding.Danny Nucci is a straight guy from the Bronx, Jason Bateman is his gay roommate. Adapted from the movie "Kiss Me Guido," this funny show was sort of collateral damage in the cancellation of Bette Midler's sitcom.
- CreatorNat BernsteinMitchel KatlinStarsTim CurryAnnie PottsLuke TarsitanoWhen Simon Ferguson (Tim Curry) is fired from a soap opera, he decides to crash with ex-wife Hadley Martin (Annie Potts) at the Manhattan hotel that she runs.Tim Curry stars as a washed-up actor who's forced to move into the hotel run by his ex-wife (Annie Potts). An unknown Steve Carrell stars as the hotel's obnoxiously eccentric chef, Yorgo.
Thanks to a failed behind-the-scenes romance between a producer and network head, this one barely made it to the air... for three weeks. The cast and crew started finding a groove in the unaired episodes. - CreatorPamela NorrisRobert SterninPrudence FraserStarsJudith LightBrett CullenJames Patrick StuartUrbane Sara Campbell pretends to be a perfect rural homemaker. Luke is the studly farm-manager; Will and Charlotte his kids.Judith Light and Brett Cullen star in this variation of "Who's the Boss," revolving around a TV homemaker who moves to the country. Like "Style & Substance," this one lived a short life thanks to CBS's darling, Martha Stewart, who didn't want the network to air shows with characters patterned after her.
- CreatorLinda Bloodworth-ThomasonStarsDelta BurkeTeri GarrPatricia HeatonSuzanne Sugarbaker of Designing Women (1986) rocks the U.S. Capitol when she takes over her recently-deceased husband's seat in Congress.A short-lived, belated spin-off from "Designing Women" finds Delta Burke's airheaded Suzanne Sugarbaker as a congresswoman. Despite the quick and confusing departure of the Malone character (Valerie Mahaffey/Julie Hagarty) and horrendously dated political jokes, Teri Garr and Patricia Heaton gave shining performances as Burke's costars and it was nice to see Suzanne get some closure.
