- DirectorKon IchikawaStarsRentarô MikuniShôji YasuiTatsuya MihashiA conscience-driven Japanese soldier traumatized by the events of WWII adopts the lifestyle of a Buddhist monk.World War II is probably the most dense historical time in human history. Millions of of everyday people stories all over the planet offered an excellent opportunity to cinema, the new form of art that could disperse the meaning together with the image, to count wounds and record the aspects of this war. This masterpiece, written and filmed by Japanese just a few years after their overwhelming defeat by the Americans, takes place in a remote corner in an almost 'dead' historical time. .
In 1945 a small unit of Japanese soldiers roams in Burma, a British colony at that time. The film starts: 'The soil of Burma is red, the same color have the rocks. It is a strange military unit: the captain is a musician, , Mitsushima, the cilician, alerts his fellow-guards with coded music he plays with his harp. As they prepare for another battle with the English troops in a village, the latter inform them that Japan has capitulated, the war is over and they have to surrender.
Before leaving for the prisoner's camp, the English officer asks them to send a soldier to another Japanese unit and convince them to surrender. It's Mitsushima who goes there, promising to his comrades how he will meet them in the camp as soon as he can. The thirty minutes deadline he is iven by English are not enough to change the opinion of his compatriots, who consider surrender is a disgrace. The English bomb their dyke and Mitsushima wakes up in a bunch of corpses. The experience of blood and slaughter, of so many unburied bodies, haunts him and prevents his return to his companions. He walks around Burma, the country of the Buddha, as a monk, gathering and burying the scattered members of his dead compatriots.
It really needs a lot of courage for the Japanese to face this painful part of their modern history. And this film does it in a simple, honest and poetic way. The director looks steadily at the soldiers who have to suffer a humiliating surrender and understands both reactions: that of wrath and the other of those who prefer to think about tomorrow. 'If we do not come back who will build the new homeland?' And the third one, the lonely road of Mitsushima who stays on the battlefield, transforming it into his personal battlefield with death and meaningless loss: I will stay here to bury the dead.
His harp becomes the channel of communication between him and his fellow soldiers, who wait to return to their rogue homeland and try to find him and convince him to come back with them. In an incredibly lyric scene, where the last dialogue among them unfolds, the soldiers sing in a chorus and Mitsushima plays with his harp the tunes they loved so much. In the end, they understand that his decision is irrevocable: Mitsushima will stay.
At the top of anti-war movies, an elegy for death, memory, love. 10/10 - DirectorSergei EisensteinStarsNikolay CherkasovSerafima BirmanPavel KadochnikovAs Ivan the Terrible attempts to consolidate his power by establishing a personal army, his political rivals, the Russian boyars, plot to assassinate their Tsar.Serge Eisenstein\s maturity work, Ivan the Terrible, a two part masterpiece projected with a fairly long time difference. i After recording with his camera the history of Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, Eisenstein decides to make a film about the man-legend, the founder of the Russian State, Ivan the Terrible.
In the first part we are transported to 1547 where Ivan, the Archduke of Moscow, ascends to the Russian throne and begins a campaign to conquer the lost Russian lands. He marries Anastasia and begins a war against the cossacks. But the Mayars back in Moscow , under the direction of his aunt, want to dethrone him. Frustrated he leaves Moscow and the Muscovites themselves follow him forming a great procession and beg him to return.
In the second part, Ivan is left alone. His enemies inside the palace have poisoned his wife, and his chief-general and adviser has been killed in the war with Poland. The 'wolves\, headed by his aunt who wants her son in the throne, and the help of the Church in the face of Archbishop Moschos Philip, try to assassinate him, but he will be able to fight back and remain alone in the throne of Russia.
The epic scenes of the battles as well as the splendor of Ivan's enthronement and marriage of the first part are followed by a second, dark part, full of whispers and toys with the shadows and curves in the palace rooms that depict Ivan's loneliness and the conspiracy of his enemies. Eisenstein sets up cat and mice game, where the cat slowly eats the mice one by one. This symbolism probably was not well accepted by Stalin, who helped Eisenstein finish the shooting of the first part quickly and get its way to the cinemas, but forbade the second part. In Ivan's face, where loneliness and power led him to paranoia and tyranny, Stalin saw a criticism of him and did not allow the filming to complete. The film was completed and screened ten years after the death of Eisenstein and of course after Stalin's death.
Both parts have a total duration of three hours and is recommended to be projected together, as the old theaters used to do. Eisenstein, giving up the mundane, gave us some of the most beautiful moments of world cinema, such as the scene where the lens writes in the foreground Ivan's profile, and behind it the long procession of the Moscovites, that beckon him to return.. Nicholas Cherkasov was amazing, especially that look in his eyes The word masterpiece, especially for the second part, falls short. - DirectorHerbert J. - DirectorJack ClaytonStarsLaurence HarveySimone SignoretHeather SearsAn ambitious young accountant plots to wed a wealthy factory owner's daughter despite falling in love with a married older woman.Considered as the film that launced British new wave of 'kitchen sink' drama, this cinematographic adaptation of film deals with class contradictions and social conventions in a small town of the english ountryside..
An ambitious young local goverment accountant from a working family moves to a small provincial town and plans to ascend in social hierarchy by marrying the daughter of the local factory owner. Meanwhile, he falls in love with a married French woman and has a turbulent love affair with her. When the moment comes to choose between hia love and his future social status, the consequences will be fatal.
A deeply critical black-and-white look at the post-war world, with the director giving pace to the actors' performance - Simon Signoret is more beautiful and expressive than ever, gaining the Oscar for this performance - with the urban, moody scenery that underlines the psychological state of the heroes. The belching chimneys and massive brick edifices help narrate the story of a young man who rebels against the strict rules of social stratification and his frustration at being powerless to escape from his lower-middle class destiny. The geography accompanies the two secter lovers in their escapes at the 'room at the top'.
A tru film about not just 'lust and ambition', as it was then advertised, but love, personal relationships, hope, despair. - DirectorJohn CassavetesStarsGena RowlandsBuck HenryJulie CarmenWhen a young boy's family is killed by the mob, their tough neighbor Gloria becomes his reluctant guardian.
