- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloAfter the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to reverse Thanos' actions and restore balance to the universe.Emotional, well acted, amazing special affects. Engame was the cumulation of 11 years. I was teary eyed, I cheered, and I laughed. This film covers so much ground a must watch again. Had some pacing issues. But Engame is one of the best if not the best MCU movies and superhero movies of all time. RDJ and Chris Evans I think deserve oscar noms. I love what they did with thor and other characters. No after credit scenes truly a special film experience not like anything I have ever seen. A perfect conclusion that builds perfectly off Infinity war.
Grade: A - DirectorBong Joon HoStarsSong Kang-hoLee Sun-kyunCho Yeo-jeongGreed and class discrimination threaten the newly-formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan.Parasite is memorizing!. Bong Joon-ho is one of the best directors working today and I enjoy all his movies. Everything in this move is perfect its score, direction, story, characters, performnces, etc. This films social commentary is great. How the rich and poor act. Its extremely fun and takes a dark turn that continues to escalate. Its a fucked up film with a huge sense of humor. It depicts an inner rotten feeling in the world thats almost unexplainable. This film is not predictable at all and I was at the edge of my seat especially towards the end.
Grade: A - DirectorBenny SafdieJosh SafdieStarsAdam SandlerJulia FoxIdina MenzelWith his debts mounting and angry collectors closing in, a fast-talking New York City jeweler risks everything in hope of staying afloat and alive. If Adam Sandler does not get nominated for the Oscar its a crime. Good time was one of my favorite movies of 2017. And with this and Uncut Gems the Safdie Brothers confirm themselves as the Next great New York directors, in vein of Martin Scorsese. This film is like an panic attack I could feel my heart in the chest the whole film. The whole supporting cast like KG were great. This film was well directed, fast paced, and the music was great. Sandler best performance ever this film is amazing.
Grade: A - DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsLeonardo DiCaprioBrad PittMargot RobbieA faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the final years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles. Not Tarantino's best work, but still one of the best movies of the year. This movie is at times slow and not as rewatchable as his other films. However, this film had amazing performances, dialogue, direction, cinematography. It is one of his most funniest and heartfelt films. A ode to classic holywood. The production design was phenomenal. Brad Pitt and Leonardo Dicaprio were outstanding. Wont be forgetting this movie for a long time.
Grade: A - DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroAl PacinoJoe PesciAn illustration of Frank Sheeran's life, from W.W.II veteran to hit-man for the Bufalino crime family and his alleged assassination of his close friend Jimmy Hoffa.Another Martin Scorsese epic. I love gangster movies and they do not make enough of them anymore. This film also had a lot of actors from the sopranos which as a fan of the show was enjoyable. This film was ofc great. Everything was top notch. These are three of the best performances of the years all these men should be nominated. This film isn’t like goodfellas or casino it’s slower, but that’s okay. This movie is made by a more mature filmmaker and actors. There’s a lot of talking and reflection about the Horrible actions these men commit. Which is unlike Scorsese films of the past. This film is funny and heartbreaking. It’s based of a fascinating true life story and it’s Martian fucking Scorsese what else would you expect.
Grade: A- - DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsJoaquin PhoenixRobert De NiroZazie BeetzDuring the 1980s, a failed stand-up comedian is driven insane and turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City while becoming an infamous psychopathic crime figure. The discourse around this movie was ridiculous and I believe the reviews should be much higher. Joker was one of my most anticipated movies of the year and it was great. Bleak, disturbing well directed, a great score, and Joquain Phoenix was breathtaking. Heavily influenced from Taxi Driver and King of Comedy. A slow burn with a riveting final act. Also, a good message about class. My only problem with the film was some predictible moments.
Grade: A - DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsRichard GereGregory HinesDiane LaneMeet the jazz musicians, dancers, owner, and guests (like gangster Dutch Schultz) of The Cotton Club in 1928-1930s Harlem.2019 director cut. This movie had a very troubled production Francis like many of his films did a director cut of it and spent 500,000 to do it. Fixes this movie an unsung great gangster film. Renny Harlin is a standout here in a stakced cast.
Grade: A- - DirectorJames MangoldStarsMatt DamonChristian BaleJon BernthalAmerican car designer Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles battle corporate interference and the laws of physics to build a revolutionary race car for Ford in order to defeat Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966.The best race car movie since Rush. They do not make enough movies like this. Great cast, performances, and direction Ford B Ferrari was a cool true story and highly entertaining film. Both Bale, as well as his family in the film, and Matt Damon are all great. The characters are well rounded. The film is funny, dramatic, and even a little sad. The race car scenes are breathtaking this film is gorgeous to look at. The production design is also top notch all the cars look great. The last few minutes of this movie hit me hard and Matt damn really delivers some great emotional scenes. This film was blast, but at times formulaic. Ford V Ferrari is one of the best of the year and I hope they make more films like this.
Grade: A- - DirectorMike FlanaganStarsEwan McGregorRebecca FergusonKyliegh CurranYears following the events of The Shining (1980), a now-adult Dan Torrance must protect a young girl with similar powers from a cult known as The True Knot, who prey on children with powers to remain immortal.(Director cut)
I am a huge fan of the Shinning and this director. But, still was not sure what to think of Doctor Sleep before I saw it. Wow! this film blew away my expectations. Suspenseful, at times funny, emotional, and powerfully acted. Doctor Sleep is one of the best Stephan King adaptions and movies of the year. This movie has no bad jump scares and somehow is able to be faithful to king and Kubrick. Rebecca ferguson is an amazing villain, Ewan McGregor gives on of his best performances in years, and this is one of the best child performances I've seen in years. Its not a typical horror film and it kind of even plays like a superhero movie at times. Its well directed and has a good soundtrack. This film has a good amount of fan service, and maybe a little bit too much towards the end. However, thats really my only flaw with this movie.
Grade: A- - DirectorOlivia WildeStarsKaitlyn DeverBeanie FeldsteinJessica WilliamsOn the eve of their high-school graduation, two academic superstars and best friends realize they should have worked less and played more. Determined not to fall short of their peers, the girls try to cram four years of fun into one night.Oliva Wide has a great directoral debt with this film. Funny, surprisingly emotional, puts a fresh spin on this genre, and it subverts expectations. Every character in this movie felt lived in and that is very difficult to accomplish. You feel like you know most of the people in this class by the time this movie is over. The film hits familiar story beats, but its unique approach make this one of the better teen films in years.
Grade: A- - DirectorAlma Har'elStarsShia LaBeoufLucas HedgesNoah JupeA young actor's stormy childhood and early adult years as he struggles to reconcile with his father and deal with his mental health.Shia labeouf gives a career best performance, Lucas Hedges is heartbreaking, and Noah Jupe gives one of the best child performances I have ever seen. The direction is excellent the film feels like a transcending experience, not a movie. Honey Boy was the hardest film Ive seen this year. It was uncomfartable and sad. As a Huge fan of Shia labeouf this film just made me love him more. The chemistry between Jupe and LaBeouf is insane and feels so real. Its hard to even talk about or describe this film. But, Wow what a picture.
Grade: A- - DirectorTrey Edward ShultsStarsTaylor RussellKelvin Harrison Jr.Alexa DemieTraces the journey of a suburban family - led by a well-intentioned but domineering father - as they navigate love, forgiveness, and coming together in the aftermath of a loss.Amazing performances, direction, music. The first half of the music which focuses on the brother is amazing and basically perfect. The second half on the sister is still very good, and deals with the fallout, but pales in comparison to the first. However, this is a realistic haunting movie that I think anyone can relate to of all ages.
Grade: A- - DirectorTaika WaititiStarsRoman Griffin DavisThomasin McKenzieScarlett JohanssonA young German boy in the Hitler Youth whose hero and imaginary friend is the country's dictator is shocked to discover that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.Amazing performances, direction, music, and production design. Jojo Rabbit is a refreshing original movie. All the performnces are great. From the children performnces, to scarlet Johansson, and sam Rockwell. This movie is funny, but also dramatic. And it balances these tones well. The critique about this movie is ridiculous. Am a Jew and I was never once offended. This movie has a powerful important message. It will make you laugh and cry. My only problem with it was it was a little predictable. But Jojo rabbit looks great, the performnces our great, the music is great, and the production design is great.
Grade: A- - DirectorPedro AlmodóvarStarsAntonio BanderasAsier EtxeandiaLeonardo SbaragliaA film director reflects on the choices he's made in life as the past and present come crashing down around him.Pedro Almodóvar is a great director who has directed such amazing films like All about My Mother. This film( which pulls events from his life) was emotional, well acted, directed, shot, and the music was also great. Antonio Banderas gives an amazing performance one of the best of the year and he should be nomminated. The whole cast (including his younger self) were great. This movie had twists and turns. It was sad and as a fan of this man's body of work as well as knowing some context about the relationship between the director and actor make this film ever better. This is a movie for film fans, its meta, its funny, its sexual, and its great.
Grade: A- - DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaniel CraigChris EvansAna de ArmasA detective investigates the death of the patriarch of an eccentric, combative family.A fun murder mystery reminiscent of Clue. Rian Johnson directed one of my favorite mysterious of all time Brick, so I was really excited for this movie. The cast is amazing, and all of the performances are strong. However, Jaeden Lieberher was underused. This film is really funny, and has some solid twists and turns. It even has some social commentary which I did not expect However, sometimes it might show its hand too early and some stuff could be cliche. But, this was a solid mystery and I had a fun time watching it.
Grade: A- - DirectorGurinder ChadhaStarsBilly BarrattRonak Singh Chadha BergesViveik KalraIn England in 1987, a teenager from an Asian family learns to live his life, understand his family and find his own voice through the music of American rock star Bruce Springsteen.I am a huge bruce springsteen fan and this movie showed the impact of his music. A great true life story full of important themes on religion, race, politics, and culture. This movie was extremely fun to watch. It reminded me of sing street all the music is great. As well as the performnces. I had a smile the whole time I was watching this film. The emotional scenes also hits hard. A movie that anyone can relate too. My only problems were that it was conventional and dragged a little bit towards the end.
Grade: A- - DirectorTyler NilsonMichael SchwartzStarsZack GottsagenAnn PierceDakota JohnsonZak, a man with down syndrome, runs away from a residential nursing home to pursue his dream of becoming a wrestler. Later, he meets with an outlaw who becomes his friend and coach.A classic American tale full of wonderful performances Peanut Butter Falcon is a predicable, but sweet film
Grade: A- - DirectorDexter FletcherStarsTaron EgertonJamie BellRichard MaddenA musical fantasy about the fantastical human story of Elton John's breakthrough years.Led by an amazing lead performance Rocketman was a musical fantasty. Well directed, good supporting leads, sad, and funny. This film is what I wanted Bohemian Rhapodsy to be Did not hold back was a good delve into the character. The film followed the biopic cliches: skips times quickly, covers a-lot of ground, and has an evil producer. However, the films musical scenes and direction make it stand out. Eggerton should be nominated.
Grade: B+ - DirectorCraig BrewerStarsEddie MurphyKeegan-Michael KeyMike EppsEddie Murphy portrays real-life legend Rudy Ray Moore, a comedy and rap pioneer who proved naysayers wrong when his hilarious, obscene, kung-fu fighting alter ego, Dolemite, became a 1970s Blaxploitation phenomenon.Eddie Murphy's best performnce and movie in years Dolemite Is My Name is a welcome comeback. Murphy is great and should be nominated. The supporting cast is solid as well. The production design, music, and direction are all good. Dolemite Is My Name is funny and also heartfelt. As a film fan Its cool to see how these low budget films get made. Though told in a conventional way Dolemite Is My Name is a blast and one of my favorite films of the year.
Grade: B+ - DirectorRobert EggersStarsRobert PattinsonWillem DafoeValeriia KaramanTwo lighthouse keepers try to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.They don't make films like this anymore. The Lighthouse is gorgeous, well directed, has a great soundtrack, and enthralling performances. This movie is a mind fucked. It starts of slow, but what percides after this is confusion, terror, and even comedy. Both William Dafoe and Robert Pattison are great in this movie. This film should definitely rack of nominations. There are so many ways to intemperate it and its honestly hard to grade or rank. It does start of slow, but this movie has so much on its mind. It sits with you long after its over. After reading articles, watching videos, and sleeping on it my love for this movie continues to grow. I can't stop thinking about it. But, it might not be as rewatch able as the movies above. And thats not a bad thing at all!
Grade: B+ (could change with further viewings) - DirectorNoah BaumbachStarsAdam DriverScarlett JohanssonJulia GreerNoah Baumbach's incisive and compassionate look at a marriage breaking up and a family staying together.Amazing performances, direction, sad, filming. Adam Driver and Scarlet Johansson give probably the best performances of the carrer. This movie shows the breakdown of a marriage extremely well. Possibly Noah Bambuch best film it's heartbreaking, but realistic.
Grade: B+ - DirectorGreta GerwigStarsSaoirse RonanEmma WatsonFlorence PughJo March reflects back and forth on her life, telling the beloved story of the March sisters - four young women, each determined to live life on her own terms. The time jumping can be a little bothersome. But, this is a great adaption of the source material. Amazing performnces, direction, music and costume design. Little Women 2019 also had a great nod to the author in the end. A delightful film.
Grade: B+ - DirectorJon WattsStarsTom HollandSamuel L. JacksonJake GyllenhaalFollowing the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever.Predictable, but fun and the perfect follow up to endgame. Spider-Man: Far from Home feels small scale in all the right ways. A strong MCU villain, good performnces, and the first Spider Man movie not in the MCU. Happy was also a fun addition. The film had some pacing problems and a predictable story. Not as good as Homecoming, but a very good Spider man movie with a lot of heart and good references to iron man.
Grade: B+ - DirectorJames GrayStarsBrad PittTommy Lee JonesRuth NeggaAstronaut Roy McBride undertakes a mission across an unforgiving solar system to uncover the truth about his missing father and his doomed expedition that now, 30 years later, threatens the universe.A slow burn Scfi film that at times goes at a sluggish pace, but at the same time parts of this movie were the best part of any movie I have seen all year including a riverting chase scene on the moon. This film feels like a modern 2001 space time odyessy and has an amazing performance from Brand Pitt. The parts with Tommy Lee jones and Brad Pitt are full of emotion. Gut wrenching scenes that are slow, methodical, and heartbreaking. Ad Astra is not a very rewatchable film, but is one of the best of the year and one of the best most beautiful films ever directed.
Grade: B+ - DirectorDavid F. SandbergStarsZachary LeviMark StrongAsher AngelA newly fostered young boy in search of his mother instead finds unexpected super powers and soon gains a powerful enemy.Funny, sweet, heartfelt. Shazam was a blast the family part was great. It was emotional and it had conventions but found a way to do it in its own way. One of the better DC films great funny performances from the three leads. It was engaging and is like a mash up of big, superman, and Instant family. Villain had a solid motivation but execution was fine.
Grade: B+
