"A slasher-fusion movie by acclaimed horror director Rolfe Kanefesky. Funny, sexy, scary, AND it stars "she-who-thinks-I-based-Cassie-on-her", Tiffany Shepis. - DirectorGeorge MihalkaStarsPaul KelmanLori HallierNeil AffleckA decades-old folk tale surrounding a deranged murderer killing those who celebrate Valentine's Day turns out to be true to legend when a group defies the killer's order and people start turning up dead.Recommended in: Hack/Slash Vol. 1 #7
"One of my all time faves, this one features a small Canadian town terrorized by a killer miner on Valentine's Day. Some really creative kills, genuine scares and kooky Nova Scotian accents make this a goodie." - DirectorGeoffrey WrightStarsBrittany MurphyJay MohrMichael BiehnIn the small town of Cherry Falls, a psychotic murderer is killing off the virgins of the local high school.Recommended in: Hack/Slash Vol. 1 #8
"A really solid, entertaining slasher film that somehow ended up being a TV movie! Brittany Murphy and Jay Mohr star in one of the best of the post-Scream slasher films. Directed by the director of ROMPER STOMPER. In a nice little twist, a slasher starts targeting virgins, sending high school kids scrambling to get laid. Though hard to find, it can be rented on DVD and is definitely worth the effort." - DirectorDave PayneStarsDevon GummersallDerek RichardsonTina IllmanStrangers trapped at an eerie travel oasis in the desert must unravel the mystery behind their visions of dying people while they are preyed upon by a decaying creature.Recommended in: Hack/Slash Vol. 1 #9
"This little indy gem, directed by Dave Payne, features a group of students stranded at a spooky travel oasis and stalked by a killer who smells... really bad. This may not sound like cinema genius, but the creative kills, the crazy slasher, and the ending make this one of the best direct-to-dvd slasher flicks of the last few years. Seriously, the ending makes M. Night Shyamalan look like Uwe Boll." - DirectorStuart GordonStarsJeffrey CombsBruce AbbottBarbara CramptonAfter an odd new medical student arrives on campus, a dedicated local and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue.Referenced in: Cassie & Vlad meet the Re-Animator (Vol. 1 #15-17)

Rent 'em all!" - DirectorTony MaylamStarsBrian MatthewsLeah AyresBrian BackerA former summer camp caretaker, horribly burned from a prank gone wrong, lurks around an upstate New York summer camp bent on killing the teenagers responsible for his disfigurement.Recommended in: Hack/Slash Vol. 1 #15
"Directed by Tony Maylam (and strangely, starring a young, non-bald Jason Alexander). An unusually atmospheric early 80's slasher flick with a number of gruesome deaths and plenty of teen naughtiness. A genuinely creepy Camp-killer movie with shades of Deliverance. Watch it!" - DirectorAdam GreenStarsShawn AshmoreEmma BellKevin ZegersThree skiers stranded on a chairlift are forced to make life-or-death choices, which prove more perilous than staying put and freezing to death.Recommended in: Hack/Slash Vol. 2 #5
"From writer-director Adam Green, he of the beloved Hatchet series, comes this genuinely frightening movie about a trio of teens trapped on a ski lift overnight (and over the next day, etc., etc.). It's a small, intimate movie that plays on questions most of us never really think about: what would it be like to freeze to death and what would you do to avoid it? Good stuff. Maybe not a date movie, but definitely a good way to fill a lonely night in January." - DirectorDon CoscarelliStarsA. Michael BaldwinBill ThornburyReggie BannisterA teenage boy and his friends face off against a mysterious grave robber, known only as the Tall Man, who employs a lethal arsenal of unearthly weapons.Recommended in: Hack/Slash Vol. 2 #5
"I should be ashamed that I didn't see the original Phantasm until I was 34. I faintly remember walking in on my dad watching it when I was maybe five or six, and then having nightmares about steel balls that spit blood. My childhood traumas aside, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this film defied any expectations I had based on years of people telling me about it. Surreal, creepy, and possessed of that wonderful "offness" that the best cult films have, Phantasm takes a distinctly different look at horror, monsters, and aliens. Also, what a fantastic soundtrack!" - DirectorRob StefaniukStarsRob StefaniukJessica ParéPaul AnthonyA comedy centered on a rock 'n' roll band that will do anything to become famous.Recommended in: Hack/Slash Vol. 2 #5
"A light, breezy horror-comedy about a *beep* band that goes vampire in order to make it big. Suck messes around with vampire tropes, while paying loving homage to horror movies. Jessica Pare is gorgeous as a reluctant vampiress, and cameos by Henry Rollins, Dave Foley, and Alice Cooper inspire a few grins." - DirectorPeter JacksonStarsTerry PotterPete O'HerneCraig SmithThe population of a small town disappears and is replaced by aliens that chase human flesh for their intergalactic fast-food chain.Recommended in: Hack/Slash Vol. 2 #6
Daniel Leister: "This was Peter Jackson's first full-length movie. Way before The Lord of the Rings trilogy he was doing gore/gag fests like this. The last time I saw it they had updated a few of the shots (not by much). It's a little romp about aliens using people for their snack burgers. Best scene is the hero falling straight trough the big baddy with a chainsaw." - DirectorDan HoskinsStarsJamie RoseCatherine CarlenLycia NaffA gang of tough women bikers are the only thing that stands between a crowd of zombies, which have been accidentally let out of their secure cave, and those still alive in the town.Recommended in: Hack/Slash Vol. 2 #6
Mark Englert: "My personal favorite film in Troma's catalog. The title is a fairly apt description of the plot, but what keeps me coming back are some very solid concepts executed in the most goofy, low-budget way possible. The soundtrack is amazing and you are treated to some very early performances from Billy Bob Thornton and Ed Gale, along with the always-great Don Calfa! It's not a movie for everyone, but if you are a fan of the absurd, tracking down this gem is well worth the effort." - DirectorAndré ØvredalStarsOtto JespersenRobert StoltenbergKnut NærumA group of students investigates a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter.Recommended in: Hack/Slash Vol. 2 #6
Crank!: "I keep telling myself I'm sick to death of single-camera and faux-documentary-style movies and then something like this comes along. Solid production, decent acting, and a fun backstory involving trolls and the government agency created to keep them under control in the modern world make for a fun flick. It's one of these offbeat things that transcends its parts and gives you something different from the crowd of current remakes and torture porn." - DirectorDario ArgentoStarsJennifer ConnellyDonald PleasenceDaria NicolodiA young girl who has an amazing ability to communicate with insects is transferred to an exclusive Swiss boarding school, where her unusual capability might help solve a string of murders.Recommended in: Hack/Slash Vol. 2 #6
James Lowder: "Dario Argento has made much better films (Inferno is an underrated masterpiece), but few odder than this yarn about a schoolgirl with the ability to communicate telepathically with insects who investigates a string of artfully gruesome murders around a Swiss boarding house. Check your conscious-mind logic at the door and go with the flow. Phenomena boasts Jennifer Connelly, Donald Pleasence, and a chimp with a straight razor--how can you go wrong?" - DirectorYoshihiro NishimuraNaoyuki TomomatsuStarsYukie KawamuraTakumi SaitôEri OtoguroA reconstructed girl is created from the pieces of a vampire girl's mini-butchery. Slaughter abounds as both of them pursue the same boy.Recommended in: Hack/Slash Vol. 2 #6
Tim Seeley: "Okay, I can't really say this adaptation of a manga is actually good, so much as I can say it's entertaining. Colorful, cartoony and insanely gory, it shines in the action scenes and lags in plot and character moments. Like... REALLY lags. But, some of the death scenes pretty well make up for it, and it gets major points for creativity." - DirectorDrew GoddardStarsKristen ConnollyChris HemsworthAnna HutchisonFive college friends head out to a remote cabin for a getaway, but things don't go as planned when they start getting killed. They soon discover that there is more to the cabin than it seems.Recommended in: Hack/Slash Vol. 2 #17
"Talking about it hurts my soul, but *beep* me if it isn't a goddamn fine film."
