- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsHugh JackmanJake GyllenhaalViola DavisWhen Keller Dover's daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads and the pressure mounts.Another amazing film from Mr. Villeneuve. It's about time people watch everything this guy has done. 9/10
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsJake GyllenhaalMélanie LaurentSarah GadonA man seeks out his exact look-alike after spotting him in a movie.Just watch the film if thought provoking and/or sci-fi films are your thing.
*Slight spoilers*
A mesmerizing film that reveals the inner battles of the self. In ways reminding us of other works such as Fight Club and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. - DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsEmmanuelle SeignerMathieu AmalricAn actress attempts to convince a director how she's perfect for a role in his upcoming production. This film actually doesn't hit North American theaters until 2014, however it opened throughout much of Europe in 2013, so I will list it as a 2013 film here, and it's easily one of the best films I've seen so far from this year. Here Polanski makes his first real low budget art house film in decades, and it works extraordinarily well. This film is definitely not for everyone, but for people who love a movie that makes you think and look at things very deeply, this is at least close to a masterpiece. Personally I think Polanski has done some of his best work in the last 15 years, which in itself is amazing when you also consider that he was making great films in the 60's and 70's as well. Keep it coming Roman, I for one can't get enough of his deeply thought provoking work. 8.5/10
- DirectorJorge DoradoStarsMark StrongTaissa FarmigaBrian CoxA man with the ability to enter people's memories takes on the case of a brilliant, troubled sixteen-year-old girl to determine whether she is a sociopath or a victim of trauma. The vast majority of people and even critics have yet to even fully understand this film. That I assure you. It may seem simple, many have even called it predictable. Know that these people truly misunderstand the film. This is a far more complex and interesting film than it has been given credit for by most. Some have called it a bad attempt at Hitchcock. Well I'm a pretty huge Hitchcock fan myself, but honestly, this is somewhat near the best of his films at the very least. Not everyone will like it obviously. If you do like complex mystery suspense films however, I strongly suggest giving this a try. Many have also compared this to Inception from a few years previous, and for good reason. There are some definite similarities in that both films enter into the world of memories, and the deception of consciousness. Nolan's best film in my view, Memento also deals with both of these subjects. While Inception was definitely a good film. I honestly feel that this film was far more fun, overall more artistically interesting, and the story has more actual depth and originality. The entire Inception idea has been done before artistically, just not in quite the same way. This film truly is much more unique. Many people don't even see that however because the film is entirely too ingenious for them to entirely figure out. Many have called Taissa Farmiga's performance here great, and others have said that she needs to learn how to put forth dialogue better. Personally I get where both opinions are coming from, however the dialogue critics just missed the point of these scenes. She is very good here, but at times it seems as if she may be lying. This is part of the film, there is purpose to this. 8.5/10
- DirectorGia CoppolaStarsEmma RobertsJames FrancoJack KilmerAn unflinching portrait of adolescent lust, boredom, and self-destruction that centers around a shy young girl on the cusp of an illicit relationship with her soccer coach.Gia Coppola's (Francis Ford's Granddaughter.) debut feature is a high school film to be reckoned with. Authentic feeling in almost every sense, with a patient artistic vision that is mature, sensitive and intimately observant. In my view this film EASILY already crushes anything Sophia has ever made. Look out because this woman seems to be the Coppola to have the next great directing career if she wants it. The potential here is scary. 8.5/10
- DirectorDarren Paul FisherStarsDaniel FraserEleanor WyldOwen PughIn an alternate reality, children learn how lucky they will be (their "frequency"), knowledge which shapes their destiny. The unluckiest boy must parse the mysteries of free will in order to pursue his forbidden love of the luckiest girl.A mind bending, thought provoking sci-fi film that every fan of the genre needs to see! 8.5/10
- DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsMia WasikowskaNicole KidmanMatthew GoodeAfter India's father dies, her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her unstable mother. She comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives and becomes increasingly infatuated with him.Chan-wook Park's first English speaking feature film is a definite must-see thriller. 8.5/10
- DirectorDavid Gordon GreenStarsNicolas CageTye SheridanGary PoulterAn ex-con, who is the unlikeliest of role models, meets a 15-year-old boy and is faced with the choice of redemption or ruin.8.5/10
- DirectorRon HowardStarsDaniel BrühlChris HemsworthOlivia WildeThe merciless 1970s rivalry between Formula One rivals James Hunt and Niki Lauda.Another very good film by Ron Howard.

Loved the interaction between the two lead characters, ultimate competitors who truly come to respect one another no matter the level of their competition. 8/10 - DirectorSteven KnightStarsTom HardyOlivia ColmanRuth WilsonIvan Locke, a dedicated family man and successful construction manager, receives a phone call on the eve of the biggest challenge of his career that sets in motion a series of events that threaten his carefully cultivated existence.Impressively written, directed and acted. A must-see for all film lovers. 8/10
- DirectorJonathan LevineStarsNicholas HoultTeresa PalmerJohn MalkovichAfter a highly unusual zombie saves a still-living girl from an attack, the two form a relationship that sets in motion events that might transform the entire lifeless world.I've seen nearly all the zombie films, from the early black and white classics to the modern. This is among the very best zombie films in my view. 8/10
- DirectorAlejandro JodorowskyStarsBrontis JodorowskyPamela FloresJeremias HerskovitsIn a little Chilean town, the son of an uprooted couple formed by a rigorous communist father and a loving but weak mother tries to pave his own path in a society that does not understand their Jewish-Ukrainian origins.A story of physical life lost in the web of pleasure and pain. Alejandro Jodorowsky long ago cemented himself as a Director that will always be relevant. Here he is well into his 80's still making films that count. Grand indeed is this dance of reality, but only if you see it of course. "For those who have ears, let them hear.". 8/10
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsChris PineZachary QuintoZoe SaldanaAfter the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.I know many people and critics seem to favor the 2009 Star Trek over this sequel, but only by a little, however I feel I enjoyed this one even a little more. 8/10
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJonah HillMargot RobbieBased on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government.I definitely wouldn't say that this is one of Scorsese's best films, but it's still a very good one at the same time. It's an enjoyable film, but truly it's subject matter is not one that comes with much joy. However it's about time some well known great filmmaker made a good film about how corrupt and sunk our monetary/economic system really is, and how people take advantage of it. This is probably the best mainstream Hollywood feature film about the economic system since Oliver Stone's Wall Street, and that was decades ago now. 8/10
- DirectorScott CoffeyStarsEmma RobertsEvan PetersJohn CusackA naive college graduate, Amy, who believes she's destined to be a great poet, begrudgingly accepts a job in a shop while she pursues a mentorship with reclusive writer Rat Billings.A unique and funny film about growing into adulthood. Roberts and Cusack are both brilliant in their roles. 7.5/10
- DirectorMarc ForsterStarsBrad PittMireille EnosDaniella KerteszFormer United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop a zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself. In my view, one of the better zombie films you'll see. However at the same time, only the 2nd best zombie film of the year for me. 7.5/10
- DirectorJ.C. ChandorStarsRobert RedfordAfter a collision with a shipping container at sea, a resourceful sailor finds himself, despite all efforts to the contrary, staring his mortality in the face.Another strong film from Chandor. Redford's authentic feeling performance may be the most important part to making this film work well. As far as survival films go, this is in the upper echelon in my view. I wouldn't call it great, but it was definitely very good.
- DirectorGuillaume CanetStarsClive OwenMarion CotillardBilly CrudupTwo brothers on either side of the law face off over organized crime in Brooklyn during the 1970s.7.5/10
- DirectorJordan Vogt-RobertsStarsNick RobinsonGabriel BassoMoises AriasThree teenage friends, in the ultimate act of independence, decide to spend their summer building a house in the woods and living off the land.A solid film that insists upon making you think. 7/10
- DirectorLiz W. GarciaStarsKristen BellMamie GummerMartin StarrA former valedictorian quits her reporter job in New York and returns to the place she last felt happy: her childhood home in Connecticut. She gets work as a lifeguard and starts a dangerous relationship with a troubled teenager. There are all sorts of different perspectives on this film and most of them not so good it seems. At the same time quite a few people seem to have enjoyed it a lot as well. I think you either get the feel of the film or you don't. It's sort of aimless as a film and all of its main characters are struggling with aim, direction. The water theme flows with the film as these people to some degree are all floating along on waves of life so to speak. Sometimes sinking. I think the film probably deserves more credit than it's gotten. The film is about being confused in life, confused about yourself and your direction, and as such I'd say it definitely works. If you get into the film, it is able to capture that unstable feeling. Sort of like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is able to capture that feeling of complete chaos with its ending. It's actually very similar, but yet very different at the same time. This is far from a great film, but it's also a lot better and more interesting than your average Hollywood flick. A lot of the critics have said that the film doesn't reveal character motivations, or flush out enough from the characters backstories and the like, but not every film is about deep character introspection or understanding. Not every story needs to be built this way. Nor does every character need to be overly explained in standard ways. This film really doesn't overly need or want that. Many of the critics were just too confused to understand the confusion hence film past its surface. Take off the boring and jump in the water! 7/10
- DirectorScott CooperStarsChristian BaleCasey AffleckZoe SaldanaWhen Rodney Baze mysteriously disappears and law enforcement doesn't follow through fast enough, his older brother Russell takes matters into his own hands to find justice. This film hits hard from the beginning and it seems to be a really great film at the half way point, however much of the end leaves this work far short of great as it gets very typical and predictable, but it's definitely still a good film overall. 7/10
- DirectorC.B. HardingStarsSean YoungJenna BoydHeather HemmensWhen a seemingly fun party goes horribly awry, a group of teenagers must decide their fates. Most of the people who have rated this film on IMDb so far quite obviously totally missed the real points this film is trying to hammer home. This film really is only for deep thinking and open minded people. If you are such a person, you need to take a look at this film, because after all, everyone is complicit. This must be one of the more unjustly rated films on this entire site. It's easy to quickly write this film off as trash. However take a deeper and real honest look at it. It has some important things to say, things all people should face at some point in their lives, or at the very least try to face honestly. 7/10
- DirectorShane BlackStarsRobert Downey Jr.Guy PearceGwyneth PaltrowWhen Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.Much better than Iron Man 2, which was a pretty big let down after the original in my view. 7/10
- DirectorRob EpsteinJeffrey FriedmanStarsAmanda SeyfriedPeter SarsgaardSharon StoneThe story of Linda Lovelace, who is used and abused by the porn industry at the behest of her coercive husband before taking control of her life.A few things were a little hard to swallow(Pun intended) regarding the story. Personally I'm not so sure I fully believe the Lovelace version of things in her life, but then again, who actually is going to recount their life with 100% truth and accuracy? Especially for the general public? Nonetheless the film is interesting and gritty. Well worth watching. 7/10
- DirectorWoody AllenStarsCate BlanchettAlec BaldwinPeter SarsgaardA New York socialite, deeply troubled and in denial, arrives in San Francisco to impose upon her sister. She looks like a million dollars but isn't bringing money, peace or love.
- DirectorLogan MillerNoah MillerStarsEd HarrisJanuary JonesJason IsaacsIn the late 1800s, a fanatical religious leader, a renegade Sheriff, and a former prostitute collide in a blood triangle on the rugged plains of the New Mexico Territory.
- DirectorJoseph KosinskiStarsTom CruiseMorgan FreemanAndrea RiseboroughA veteran assigned to extract Earth's remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.
- DirectorMichael BayStarsMark WahlbergDwayne JohnsonAnthony MackieA trio of bodybuilders in Florida get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong.
- DirectorScott WalkerStarsNicolas CageVanessa HudgensJohn CusackAn Alaska State Trooper partners with a young woman who escaped the clutches of serial killer Robert Hansen to bring the murderer to justice. Based on actual events.A pretty solid but yet fairly standard thriller. 7/10
- DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJennifer LawrenceJosh HutchersonLiam HemsworthKatniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.Better than the first.
- DirectorMichael WinterbottomStarsSteve CooganMatt LucasAnna FrielThe life of Paul Raymond, the controversial entrepreneur who became Britain's richest man.
- DirectorSebastián SilvaStarsMichael CeraGaby HoffmannJuan Andrés SilvaAs Jamie travels in Chile, he invites an eccentric woman to join his group's quest to score a fabled hallucinogen, a move that finds him at odds with his new companion, until they drink the magic brew on a beach at the edge of the desert.
- DirectorAlexandros AvranasStarsThemis PanouReni PittakiEleni RoussinouA chilling account of a horrendous family tragedy perpetuated behind closed doors. As chronic violence chips away at the household's elaborate façade, the shocking secret reveals that almost nothing is as it seems.
- DirectorRuben FleischerStarsSean PennRyan GoslingEmma StoneIt's 1949 Los Angeles, the city is run by gangsters and a malicious mobster, Mickey Cohen. Determined to end the corruption, John O'Mara assembles a team of cops, ready to take down the ruthless leader and restore peace to the city.Made almost with a bit of a Hollywood cartoon aspect to it just as The Untouchables was. I would prefer these films to be more honest and gritty but nonetheless this works as decent entertainment. Not as good as The Untouchables mind you, but still fairly good.
- DirectorCarl RinschStarsKeanu ReevesHiroyuki SanadaKô ShibasakiA band of samurai sets out to avenge the death and dishonor of their master at the hands of a ruthless shogun. The film seemed perhaps a little rushed through at points in the story, and also I didn't really see how the 3D effect really did anything positive for the film at all, nonetheless the basic story here is a very good one. Based on a Japanese legend that has been told many different times and in many ways over a few hundred years as I understand it. Worth a watch if you don't know the story or if you're a fan of the story.
- DirectorJeremy SaulnierStarsMacon BlairDevin RatrayAmy HargreavesA mysterious outsider's quiet life is turned upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving himself an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family.
- DirectorAharon KeshalesNavot PapushadoStarsLior AshkenaziRotem KeinanTzahi GradAfter a little girl is brutally murdered, a suspect avoids arrest due to lack of evidence. Working separately, her father and a cop decide to do something about it.
- DirectorZak HilditchStarsJessica De GouwNathan PhillipsDavid FieldA self-obsessed young man makes his way to the party-to-end-all-parties on the last day on Earth, but ends up saving the life of a little girl searching for her father. Their relationship ultimately leads him on the path to redemption. There were a lot of good things about this film and quite a few drawbacks as well. If you like apocalypse themed films this is definitely a must-see. The film has some unique and interesting aspects to it, but to me it didn't feel quite as authentic as some lovers of this film have claimed it to be. 6.5/10
- DirectorEvan GoldbergSeth RogenStarsJames FrancoJonah HillSeth RogenSix Los Angeles celebrities are stuck in James Franco's house after a series of devastating events just destroyed the city. Inside, the group not only have to face the apocalypse, but themselves.Well this film definitely has its share of ups and downs. At points I thought it was really funny and quite great, but at other points I found it to be truly pathetic. Oh well, worth a watch, I think... 6.5/10
- DirectorMikael HåfströmStarsSylvester StalloneArnold Schwarzenegger50 CentWhen a structural-security authority finds himself set up and incarcerated in the world's most secret and secure prison, he has to use his skills to escape with help from the inside.Silly ,sure, and so obviously a movie. However it's also entertaining and inventive enough to mostly enjoy it.
- DirectorShawn LevyStarsVince VaughnOwen WilsonRose ByrneTwo salesmen whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital age find their way into a coveted internship at Google, where they must compete with a group of young, tech-savvy geniuses for a shot at employment.Pretty familiar stuff from Vaughn and Owen Wilson but the film still works as a fun comedy. BTW, this could have just as easily been called Revenge Of The Nerds part 18.
6.5/10 - DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsSandra BullockGeorge ClooneyEd HarrisDr Ryan Stone, an engineer on her first time on a space mission, and Matt Kowalski, an astronaut on his final expedition, have to survive in space after they are hit by debris while spacewalking. Not nearly as good as its hype. Mostly a been there, done that film, but it's definitely not a bad film either. I didn't see it in 3D, perhaps it was a good bit better in that format?? 6.5/10
- DirectorSherry HormannStarsAntonia Campbell-HughesThure LindhardtAmelia PidgeonA young Austrian girl is kidnapped and held in captivity for eight years. Based on the factual case of Natascha Kampusch.
- DirectorJon S. BairdStarsJames McAvoyJamie BellEddie MarsanA corrupt, junkie cop with bipolar disorder attempts to manipulate his way through a promotion in order to win back his wife and daughter while also fighting his own inner demons.6.5/10
- DirectorDestin Daniel CrettonStarsBrie LarsonFrantz TurnerJohn Gallagher Jr.A 20-something supervising staff member of a residential treatment facility navigates the troubled waters of that world alongside her co-worker and longtime boyfriend. Some of the scenes in this film feel ultra authentic and it's wonderful, however I felt a few scenes were quite overwritten as well and dragged the film down a good bit. 6.5/10
- DirectorBong Joon HoStarsChris EvansJamie BellTilda SwintonIn a future where a failed climate change experiment has killed all life except for the survivors who boarded the Snowpiercer (a train that travels around the globe), a new class system emerges. In my view, this film was not nearly as good as many claim it is, nonetheless it was worth a watch. 6.5/10
- DirectorSteven R. MonroeStarsJemma DallenderJoe AbsolomYavor BaharovWhen Katie innocently accepts an offer to have new photos taken for her portfolio, the experience quickly turns into a nightmare of rape, torture and kidnapping. Now, she will have to find the strength to exact her brutal revenge. If you're into these kinds of films, this one really isn't as bad as you may think. 6/10
- DirectorPaul HaggisStarsLiam NeesonMila KunisAdrien BrodyThree interlocking love stories involving three couples in three cities: Rome, Paris, and New York.
- DirectorJames DeMonacoStarsEthan HawkeLena HeadeyMax BurkholderA wealthy family is held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legal. The Purge definitely has an interesting, and a very relevant to our times premise. I would even go so far as to say that this film could have been among the best horror films ever made, that is if it were executed with more believability/creativity. The suspension of disbelief here is just too weak for the film to be anything more than a fairly mediocre horror film, and that's definitely disappointing given the interesting and somewhat unique premise. In my view the first 30 or so minutes of the film are quite good. The suspense builds up decently, the characters seem somewhat interesting, the premise has unique possibilities, but then we just end up getting overwhelmed with too many familiar/lazy plot devices to remain held in the grips of the film. The young son in the film becomes basically the goat of stupidity behind practically all of the problems that the main characters have to deal with, and it ends up feeling like a cheap way out. It ends up mostly being a very standard and overdone Hollywood film, because it lacks enough intelligence to deliver truly engaging turning points and an overall solid story. The film had promise, but definitely lacks the creativity to make it a standout.
In my view the film is no better than a 6 out of 10, at the very most. Perhaps a 5 would even be more fitting. However one aspect of the film makes me give it the extra rating of a 6. This is definitely the most interesting part of the film and something to think about. There is no doubt, a somewhat hidden message does straddle this film...
The film basically tells a story about how America has become a more productive and peaceful country since introducing the purge to society. A period of 12 hours a year in which murder, and basically any other crime(Certain weapons are still forbidden) is entirely legal. The film lightly paints us a portrait of how this time of purge is basically to the main benefit of the wealthy. They are the only people who can really afford to defend themselves or hide very well during the dangerous time of the purge.
The main story of events in the film revolves around some very privileged and snobby college types who are out to kill the worthless 'swine' of the country who are of course the homeless and downtrodden of society, the weak and worthless if you will, who supposedly drag the country down. The main person we see them after is a homeless man who is clearly dressed in an army green jacket and has dog tags around his neck. At the end of the film, there is a news report about how many people have gathered at a candle light vigil to pay tribute to those whose lives were sacrificed during the purge, in order to help make the country a safer place. I think you can do the math yourself. It is quite apparent that the hidden message is that the elite, with their noses firmly stuck in the air are too self absorbed to care about common folk, they feel they are above others and that they have the right to use the commoners and especially the poor. With the homeless war vet, it is very obvious that the film draws a parallel between the films world of the purge, and our real world in which the elite are continuously using the poor people and common folk as their dogs of war so to speak. Make of it what you will, but clearly their is an attempt to draw a parallel between how America's elite think very little of, and have no regard when it comes to using the less fortunate of society.
While this is far from a masterpiece, I do recommend one viewing to those who are interested, reasonably intelligent, and fans of the horror genre. It could have been a lot better, however it also could have been far far worse. It has its moments.
6/10 - DirectorJoey SolowayStarsKathryn HahnLink RuizCesar GarciaRachel tries to spice up her marriage with a trip to a strip club. She befriends McKenna, who gave her a lapdance. McKenna moves in with Rachel's family and becomes a nanny for the son.
- DirectorPetra Biondina VolpeStarsLuna Zimic MijovicAndré JungBettina StuckyOn Christmas Eve, the prostitute Mia meets four different people for different reasons.I can't say that I liked this film really. However it is very bleak and there is an admirable amount of realism here. It's well filmed, but the story is extremely depressing and sad to say the least. 6/10
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpySeamus Davey-FitzpatrickWe meet Jesse and Celine nine years on in Greece. Almost two decades have passed since their first meeting on that train bound for Vienna.
- DirectorNeill BlomkampStarsMatt DamonJodie FosterSharlto CopleyIn the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds. It's hard to believe that some people have actually called this film "smart", lmao! It's so generic and unbelievable for the most part, it's hard to fathom critics actually saying such things but hey, we all know these days many of these critics are in the big studio's pockets. So anything from them shouldn't really surprise us anymore. Even Blomkamp himself said he and I quote "F'd it up" and wishes he could redo the film because the script was so weak. 5.5/10
- DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsChristian BaleAmy AdamsBradley CooperA con man, Irving Rosenfeld, along with his seductive partner Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild F.B.I. Agent, Richie DiMaso, who pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and the Mafia.Wholly crap, I can't believe this mess of a film is actually being praised so highly by so many people. Just shows how little we have come to accept as good these days. A good film in some ways, sure, but a terrible film in ways too. Nonetheless it's definitely worth a watch at least for the tremendous performance by Christian Bale. 5.5/10
- DirectorLuc BessonStarsRobert De NiroMichelle PfeifferDianna AgronThe Manzoni family, a notorious Mafia clan, is relocated to Normandy, France, under the Witness Protection Program, where fitting in soon becomes challenging as their old habits die hard. Not bad, but definitely not as funny as it was trying to be either. 5.5/10
