- DirectorKristy Guevara-FlanaganStarsLynda CarterJane EspensonMichelle FrankThe history of fictional female heroes in Western media from Wonder Woman's creation onward. There was a story on this in the free street press the other day:
Beat, 12/12/2012, Issue number 1350, page 28 (Australian publication).
Sounds interesting. - DirectorLarry BishopStarsMichael J. PollardHenry SilvaGabriel ByrneWith his boss in the madhouse, a mobster is temporary boss of the criminal empire just as vicious rivals threaten the control of the empire. This movie was referred to as "Trigger happy" when I saw the first episode of Channel 31's "The unknown movie show" series. You can watch it online via C31's website:
http://www.c31.org.au/program/view/program/unknown-movie-show-the
I would think that episodes are only online for a couple of weeks before being replaced by more recent episodes. Only two episodes are online at a time too, I think.
Anyway, this movie was featured on the episode of 25/10/2013. The host mentioned that Siskel and Ebert hated this movie...at least one of them gave it 0! Anyway, looking at the clips of the movie in TUMS, it looked alright...sort of character based humour if nothing else. Managed to find the 'right' title of this movie by looking at Jeff Goldblum's filmography, although "Trigger happy" will get redirected to this title. - DirectorKen HannamStarsNick TateJohn WatersElizabeth AlexanderA teacher discovers one of his students has a rare blood disease, and is drawn into a mystery that culminates in a thrilling climax.[Finally got around to watching this...it's been on my PVR for around 8 months! Anyway, I submitted a review on this today and hopefully it will be up soon. Definitely worth it.]
Have vague memories of this Australian movie. This week's The Green Guide (in The Age, 07/11/2013) has a review for it, for the supposed screening on ABC TV at around very early Monday morning...but the EPG has "The African queen" at that time in any case...as does the actual Green Guide listing! Anyway, if it pops up soon on ABC TV I'll try and make a point of watching it again...have to record it though if it's on that late! - DirectorHoward MorrisStarsJim HuttonDorothy ProvineMilton BerleA mint worker accidentally destroys some money and decides to break in and reprint it, but finds he has some unwanted partners. As a child I remember catching some of this movie on tv and...finding one particular scene absolutely hilarious. Not sure if I watched it all...I should check this movie out again...one of these days.
- DirectorRoger CormanStarsRay MillandHazel CourtRichard NeyAn artist grows distant from his new wife as an irrational horror of premature burial consumes him.I think that this is the movie that I have in mind...the title certainly suggests it. Was watching this as a child and my old man got wind of the premise and was totally horrified...basically sent me to my room! Wow! Being a 1962 film, I doubt that anything apart from the premise would be objectionable. So...'one of these days' to see it all!
- CreatorPatrick McGoohanStarsPatrick McGoohanAngelo MuscatPeter SwanwickAfter he resigns, a secret agent is abducted and taken to what looks like an idyllic village, but is actually a bizarre prison. He refuses to give his warders information while attempting to escape.I saw the 2009 remake of the original and I feel inclined to go back to the source series.
- CreatorTerry NationStarsLucy FlemingIan McCullochDenis LillA community of survivors struggle to stay alive in the wake of a global pandemic known as the Death that wiped out 99.98% of humanity.I have vague recollections of which this series as a child. Can't say that I remember too much of it or even thought it great at the time. Am aware of a commercial network currently or recently screening episodes of the 2008 remake of this show, which I haven't seen.
Might check out the original series 'one of these days'. It seems to tap into similar themes as a show like "The walking dead"...apart from not having zombies...I assume! - CreatorSydney NewmanStarsPatrick MacneeDiana RiggHonor BlackmanA quirky spy show of the adventures of eccentrically suave British Agent John Steed and his predominantly female partners.I have vague memories of watching and enjoying "The new avengers". Might check out the the original series 'one of these days'. Commercial tv here in Australia is/was currently showing the original series...just haven't made a point of watching it...would want to get the show on disc or something so that I can watch it chronologically, from the start.
- DirectorGary HustwitStarsManfred SchulzMassimo VignelliRick PoynorA documentary about typography, graphic design, and global visual culture. Was reminded of this documentary on a font (!!) looking in this week's Green Guide (tv guide lift-out). Not sure if this is the same font which mentioned in an episode of Mad Men. Even though I'm more of Times New Roman kind of guy, I think I'll try and see this docu...one of these days!
- DirectorJames TobackStarsJames TobackAlec BaldwinJessica ChastainAn exploration of several interconnected subjects: The Cannes Film Festival, cinema art, money, glamor and death. Was reminded of this movie by ABC tv's "At the movies" this week (i.e. broadcast on 06/05/2014). Not sure if this is screening a convenient location for me or if at all nearby.
- StarsJon RonsonPaul H. SmithJournalist Jon Ronson examines some of the more unusual techniques being employed by the US government in the war on terror. This was mentioned in an unenthusiastic review for "Joe Rogan questions everything" (The Age's Green Guide, 22/05/2014, p.16) as a better alternative to it. It's by the guy who wrote "The men who stare at goats"...I didn't mind the movie of that book, so...
- DirectorAlbert FalzonStarsChris BrockStephen CooneyTerry FitzgeraldThe film portrays surfers living in spiritual harmony with nature, making their own boards (and homes) as they traveled in search of the perfect wave across Australia's north-east coast, Bali and Hawaii.Wikipedia's entry for this movie reminds me about the music for this film, which I really should check out:
"The record became the first Australian Gold soundtrack album. In October 2010, the soundtrack for Morning of the Earth (1971) was listed in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums". - DirectorMario AndreacchioStarsCassandra DelaneyPeter FordDavid SandfordA young woman running an animal sanctuary in the outback takes her revenge on a trio of kangaroo hunters who terrorized her.Someone mentioned this as being the film mentioned by Quentin Tarantino in the Australian documentary "Not quite Hollywood". Quentin sounded quite excited about a scene where a woman is strapped to the front of a jeep and driven wildly around by some thugs or something. Maybe his enthusiams for this film will inspire me to see it! That documentary also featured the scene in question. A good documentary about Australian exploitation films in any case.
- DirectorEddie MartinStarsTas PappasBen PappasTommy CaudillBrothers Tas and Ben Pappas become the kings of professional skateboarding, but their hedonistic ways lead to a hard fall from grace.Saw this discussed on At The Movies this week (2nd week of July, 2014, with Judith Lucy and Jason Di Rosso filling in for Margaret and David). Sounds very interesting...about two brothers from Australia who were ranked #1 and #2 in the world of skateboarding and rivals to Tony Hawk. Apparently it's a Shakespearean tale to be told about them!
- DirectorClaudio FragassoStarsMichael Paul StephensonGeorge HardyMargo PreyA vacationing family discovers that the entire town they're visiting is inhabited by goblins, disguised as humans, who plan to eat them.I saw this movie mentioned in the free street press...by Janet A. McLeod and Geoff Wallis. It seems they show movies as part of something called "Cinema fiasco". In other words, this title belongs in the category of movies which can be defined as "So bad they're good!".
They also mentioned two other movies in this article on their screenings..."The vampire lovers" and notorious Australian straight to video title "Houseboat horror", which had some famous Australians in it (from memory, a couple of big names in the music industry here, as far as hosting popular music shows go).
Anyway, this movie here gets mentioned as one of the worst films of all...be interesting to see its rating here, once I complete this edit! - DirectorBilly WilderStarsWilliam HoldenGloria SwansonErich von StroheimA screenwriter develops a dangerous relationship with a faded film star determined to make a triumphant return. This movie has been on my 'radar' for years, I suppose. Was reminded of this fact by it appearing on the "classic movies" section of last week's At The Movies (22/07/2014), with fill-in hosts Judith Lucy (her pick) and Jason Di Rosso.
The self-reflexive aspects of the movie which they mentioned made it sound even more interesting to watch. One narrative device in the review brought to mind the same device's use in "American beauty". - DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEllar ColtranePatricia ArquetteEthan HawkeThe life of Mason, from early childhood to his arrival at college.Featured on At The Movies this week (on 26/08/2014). Sounds interesting. Hopefully it will play in cinemas near me.
- DirectorMichael SpierigPeter SpierigStarsEthan HawkeSarah SnookNoah TaylorAs his last assignment, a temporal agent is tasked to travel back in time and prevent a bomb attack in New York in 1975. The hunt, however, turns out to be beyond the bounds of possibility.Featured on At The Movies this week (on 26/08/2014). Sounds interesting. Hopefully it will play in cinemas near me.
- DirectorNorman TokarStarsDean JonesNancy OlsonHarry MorganWhen John Baxter inherits a ski resort in the Rocky Mountains, he quits his job in New York and moves west to run it--only to find his "estate" in a state of total dilapidation.Am wondering if this is the movie that I absolutely cacked myself laughing at as a child (not literally, of course!). Saw this in primary school. Do remember getting an answer to my question on what the movie I was thinking of was called...hopefully it's this...which I just looked up under "Disney movies" at Wikipedia and looked in the section for 1970s movies.
There would be other movies worth revisiting too, from this era, like the original Freaky Friday...amongst others. - DirectorChris HegedusD.A. PennebakerStarsNorman MailerGermaine GreerDiana TrillingInfamously macho author Norman Mailer shares a 1971 NYC panel with an audience of intellectual women and famous feminists receiving a lively critique revealing the sophisticated political, literary discourse of early Women's Lib movement.Mentioned in the 2nd episode of the terrific two part documentary "Brilliant creatures" about Clive, Germaine, Bob and Barry. This film is about Germaine's intended debate with Norman Mailer in the U.S., I believe.
