- DirectorDavid LynchStarsJack NanceCharlotte StewartAllen JosephHenry Spencer tries to survive his industrial environment, his angry girlfriend, and the unbearable screams of his newly born mutant child.Lynch has made a lot of very impressive films, and even TV for that matter. Twin Peaks anyone?! His very first feature length film however may indeed be his most mind blowing of them all, though it is certainly not for everyone. I also often call this, one of the hardest films in existence to watch, but it is also one of the most brilliant films ever made in my estimation. 9/10
- DirectorWoody AllenStarsWoody AllenDiane KeatonTony RobertsAlvy Singer, a divorced Jewish comedian, reflects on his relationship with ex-lover Annie Hall, an aspiring nightclub singer, which ended abruptly just like his previous marriages.Perhaps Woody's best overall film, though there are also a few other great contenders in my mind. 9/10
- DirectorLuis BuñuelStarsFernando ReyCarole BouquetÁngela MolinaRecounted in flashback are the romantic perils of Mathieu, a middle-aged French sophisticate as he falls for his nineteen-year-old former chambermaid Conchita.Buñuel's last film, and as pretty much always with Luis, a special one! 8.5/10
- DirectorGeorge LucasStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherLuke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader.I think I fell in love with Carrie Fisher in the early 1980's, just as about 50 million other little boys did. This film was certainly one of the major reasons why. Vader was also an excellent space villain at the time, and pretty much everyone appreciates Harrison Ford, do they not? 8.5/10
- DirectorPier Giuseppe MurgiaStarsMartin LoebLara WendelEva IonescoA teen boy grows from playing and fighting with his German-shepherd dog to playing kid--then adult--games with two equally young girls in a dream-like forest which eventually turns eerie and somber. You'll likely either appreciate this for what it is, or you'll hate it. I've only seen it once myself and quite a while back. I may not even feel the same about it after a second viewing, who knows at this point? It's not a standard film by any means, more of a surreal art film if memory serves me right. Perhaps I have it too high on my list here, it seems to have been pelted by most raters. Whatever the case, I recall it as being interesting and somewhat thought provoking, so I won't change my rating at least until I see it again. I'm never one to shy away from a little controversy anyway. People talk about peace as if it is the only way for us, but truly there is no such thing. In order for things to change, and for new things to be created at all, pots must be stirred! As hard as it is for us to face as mortal humans, creation is naturally a violent thing in the physical realm. In this world, playing safe little nice person in the corner is never going to change much of anything! 8.5/10
- DirectorHerbert RossStarsRichard DreyfussMarsha MasonQuinn CummingsAfter being dumped by her live-in boyfriend, an unemployed dancer and her 10-year-old daughter are reluctantly forced to live with a struggling off-Broadway actor.I'm not a big Rom-Com guy usually as they are often pretty typical, but this Neil Simon written effort is a pretty great film. Very rarely on any of my lists will you see two Rom-Com's make my top 6 films of the year, but with Annie Hall and this one, 1977 was a very good year for them in my view. Luis' That Obscure Object Of Desire at #3 is also classified as a romance and a comedy, but of course nothing Luis ever did really fit into a common mold. That guy was a truly pioneering artist at all times. Most viewers and critics alike are still entirely baffled in fact by many of his works. Even most filmmakers themselves are often lost when it comes to Luis. He was so far ahead of most artists, and so much more daring than even many of the craziest. 8/10
- DirectorRichard BrooksStarsDiane KeatonRichard GereTuesday WeldA dedicated schoolteacher spends her nights cruising bars, looking for abusive men with whom she can engage in progressively extreme sexual encounters.Personally I'm not sure why more people don't appreciate this film. I'm a pretty big fan of it for sure. 8/10
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsRichard DreyfussFrançois TruffautTeri GarrRoy Neary, an Indiana electric lineman, finds his quiet and ordinary daily life turned upside down after a close encounter with a UFO, spurring him to an obsessed cross-country quest for answers as a momentous event approaches.I saw someone ask a question on some silly website the other day, "What sci-fi film was better, this or Kubrick's 2001?". I think even Spielberg himself would crap his pants laughing over that question. Anyway, this is a very good fun popcorn sci-fi nonetheless. 7.5/10
- DirectorGeorge Roy HillStarsPaul NewmanMichael OntkeanStrother MartinA failing ice hockey team finds success with outrageously violent hockey goonery.7.5/10
- DirectorMichael AptedStarsStacy KeachDavid HemmingsEdward FoxA dangerous, violent gang kidnaps a woman and her daughter to extort some money from her rich husband. He and her down-on-his-luck ex-cop ex-husband decide to deal with the kidnappers themselves.English Director Michael Apted has received a good bit of attention for a few films over the years, most notably Coal Miner's Daughter, Gorky Park and Gorilla's In The Mist. He's also directed a number of TV episodes of many well known shows. Of all of the films I've seen of his, two of them stand out to me as quite underrated or underappreciated generally. This one, and 1992's Thunderheart with Sam Shepard, Graham Greene and Val Kilmer. I definitely recommend checking them both out if you like crime drama. 7.5/10
- DirectorJohn FlynnStarsWilliam DevaneTommy Lee JonesLinda HaynesA recently-returned Vietnam POW loses his family and his right hand during a violent home invasion, and seeks retribution against those responsible.7.5/10
- DirectorPasquale Festa CampanileStarsFranco NeroCorinne CléryDavid HessA bickering couple driving cross-country through California pick up a psychotic hitchhiker, who threatens to kill them unless they take him to Mexico.7.5/10
- DirectorSam PeckinpahStarsJames CoburnMaximilian SchellJames MasonGerman commander Hauptmann Stransky places a squad in extreme danger after Sergeant Rolf Steiner refuses to lie for him.7.5/10
- DirectorCarl ReinerStarsJohn DenverGeorge BurnsTeri GarrWhen God appears to an assistant grocery manager as a good natured old man, the Almighty selects him as his messenger for the modern world.7/10
- DirectorJesús FrancoStarsSusan HemingwayWilliam BergerHerbert Fux16-year-old Maria is forced into Serra D'Aires convent, secretly run by Satanists.
- DirectorHal NeedhamStarsBurt ReynoldsSally FieldJerry ReedThe Bandit is hired on to run a tractor-trailer full of beer over state lines, in hot pursuit by a pesky sheriff.
- DirectorDario ArgentoStarsJessica HarperStefania CasiniFlavio BucciAn American newcomer to a prestigious German ballet academy comes to realize that the school is a front for something sinister amid a series of grisly murders. To me this film is harshly overrated by many. I'd say it's a bit of a mess in all honesty. 6/10
