Excellent Films for Avuncular Families
Please sort by list order to see the films I consider suitable for children listed first.
These films focus on devoted, nurturing relationships between blood family members, especially siblings (both as children and adults), mothers and their children, uncles and aunts and their nieces and nephews, grandparents and their grandchildren, and cousins. They’re light on limerent-sexual relationships. I’ve also included a few movies because of their excellent portrayals of chaste characters and strong friendships. All the movies are either appropriate for children, or, where noted, adolescents.
This list focuses on positive depictions of family relationships. For negative depictions of limerent-sexual relationships, please see my list Antisexual Films. Please note that the movies on that list are definitely NOT all suitable for children. For movies completely without limerent-sexual relationships, I recommend this list (not made by me): http://www.imdb.com/list/ls060780058/
Incase you stumbled on this list by accident, the avuncular system refers to the practice of siblings remaining together throughout life, ideally in a multi-generational ancestral home, rather than getting married, and brothers helping to raise their sisters’ children (“avunculus” being the Latin word for maternal uncle). It’s a social structure that used to be widespread throughout the world, especially during the Neolithic, and was the social system throughout Europe prior to the Indo-European invasions and their introduction of the practice of attacking other tribes and abducting (“marrying”) their women. Today, the avuncular system only survives in tiny pockets of indigenous culture, though it is beginning to see a revival in the Western world.

A brother grieving for his mother's death learns to love and cherish his younger sister over the course of this beautiful, magical movie. An excellent movie for St. Patrick's Day or Midsummer.
Sensitive age: 8+
Suggested Audience: Mothers & Children, Sisters & Brothers
Please note, I unabashedly include spoilers in the descriptions, for the sake of determining whether it's a movie you want to see with your family or not. If you don't want spoilers, please only read the descriptions IMDB provides. - CreatorBonnie TurnerTerry TurnerStarsJohn LithgowJane CurtinKristen JohnstonA group of aliens is sent to Earth, disguised as a human family, to experience and report life on the third planet from the sun.Rated TV-PG. They’re secretly aliens, but they present themselves as three siblings living together and raising the elder brother’s teenage son. Very funny comedy.
Sensitive age: 13+ or 14+
Suggested Audience: Boys, Aunts & Nephews, Uncles & Nephews, Sisters & Brothers, Brothers
Things to talk about:
What sort of things about human behavior do the aliens tend to misinterpret?
What sort of social comments is this show making?
What makes this show funny?
How do you think these aliens would view the things we do every day? What aspects of our lives might confuse them? Would they behave differently if they were living among us?
How are the experiences of the aliens similar to or different from the experiences of foreigners from another country? Are there human universals that the aliens do not share?
How does Dick's self-image affect his behavior? - DirectorJean YarbroughStarsBud AbbottLou CostelloAlan CurtisWhen their captain is swindled out of his riverboat by a trio of gamblers, stage show star Abbott and his bumbling sidekick Costello must put things right.Rated Approved. Abbott and Costello had a classic friendship. Their series of "horror" movies are also good Halloween movies for children (and adults who don't enjoy horror). I also recommend the picture book Who's on First? illustrated by John Martz.

Suggested Audience: Boys, especially male friends - DirectorKristen McGaryStarsSkyler DayWooferAnthony P. RodriguezIn 1898, spirited nine-year-old Ociee Nash lives with her father and brother in rural Mississippi until her father sends her to live with her refined aunt in Asheville, North Carolina.A 9-year-old girl named Ociee whose mother has passed away leaves her family farm, at her father's insistence, to go live with her aunt. She and her older brother have a close relationship and he's as sad to lose her as she is to leave, and the girl and her aunt end up developing mutual respect and love for each other. The aunt is courted by a childhood friend of hers and repeatedly express a lack of interest. Much of the story revolves around Ociee not conforming to gender roles for girls, and her friendship with a more feminine girl - their friendship is lovely and they look out for each other. An excellent movie for girls and for sisters & brothers. Based on the book A Flower Blooms on Charlotte Street by Milam McGraw Propst.

Now, it's up to the dynamic duo to use all their computer smarts and solve this holiday crime by Christmas time!Only including this one, as representative of all the Mary-Kate and Ashley videos. Mary-Kate and Ashley are twin sisters who are both young sleuths and solve "crimes" together. Young children will likely find it delightful; the adults in the family might want to kill themselves with a spoon. There have been a number of novelizations, if your children are interested.

Sherlock is of course the poster child of chaste characters, and his friendship with Watson is the stuff of legend. In the background is his relationship with his older brother Mycroft. Based on the books by Arthur Conan Doyle.

Based on the board books by Eric Hill.

Suggested Audience: Boys, especially Grandparents & Grandsons - DirectorArvin BrownStarsTeresa StratasRobert SapolskyGiorgio TozziOne night in Judea, a disabled shepherd boy-turned-beggar and his mother are visited by three strangers. They are the Three Kings, and they are on their way to Bethlehem to visit the Christ Child, who has just been born.Amahl, who is crippled, lives in poverty with his mother. Then they're visited by the Three Kings, on their way to see the Christ child, and they're blessed by a miracle. A staple opera for Christmastime. This production with Teresa Stratas is definitely my favorite. I really like the picture book version of the opera illustrated by Michèle Lemieux.

Suggested Audience: Mothers & Sons - CreatorElise DoganieriBertram van MunsterStarsPhil KeoghanJoyce AguUchenna AguMultiple teams race around the globe for $1,000,000 to 'amazing' locations.Rated TV-PG. Suitable for older children and adolescents - probably not suitable for younger children because it's intense, there's cussing, and some people are mean to each other. It's an amazing study in adaptive and maladaptive relationships and how they affect people's ability to get real stuff done. And you get to see beautiful places all around the world to boot. There are teams of family members and friends in every season, but I especially recommend Seasons 1, 2, 4, 8-10, 13, 22, and 24 (I don't know about anything past Season 25).
Sensitive age: 13+ - DirectorNadia TassStarsAnnaSophia RobbJordan BridgesRebecca MaderSet in 1904, "American Girls" revolves around Samantha as she moves in with her grandmother and learns how to become a proper Victorian young lady.Samantha, whose parents died in a boating accident, is raised by her wealthy grandmother and uncle. A very nice Christmas movie. Based on the books by Valerie Tripp.

Is the death of a parent too sad of a subject for a children's movie?
Why does Samantha like Nellie?
Why does Samantha take such risks to help the orphans?
Is there a more effective way she could have helped the orphans?
Was it a good decision for her not to tell her grandmother or uncle about what she was doing? What would have happened if she had told them?
What things did Samantha do that could have turned out much more dangerously than they did?
What would happen now if a worker got injured on the job, the way the boy was?
Nowadays, there are laws that prevent children from working almost all jobs. Do you think that's a good idea? How do you think the Victorians would have responded to that question?

The friendship between the two men totally usurps the romance, as the movie poster indicates. With virtually no crimes to solve, most of Andy's time is spent philosophizing and calming down his cousin Deputy Barney Fife.Rated TV-G. Opie is raised by his father Andy and his Aunt Bea, who is unmarried and seems perfectly happy that way. Andy and Barney are cousins, and Andy's endless patience and sensitive consideration for his cousin is a good model (though he definitely falls short in the honesty department). A TV show from a kinder and gentler time.
Sensitive age: 3+ or 6+
Suggested Audience: Boys, especially Great-Aunts & Great-Nephews, Aunts & Nephews, and Male Cousins
Things to talk about:

Is Andy like policemen nowadays? How is he similar or different?
How do TVs portray family members nowadays? How is that different from the way families are portrayed on Andy Griffith? Are there any similarities between the fictional families portrayed back then and the fictional families portrayed nowadays?
If you were to a write a TV show about a family, what sort of family would it be? What would the characters be like? How would they treat each other? What sort of storylines would there be for the plot?
Is there violence in this TV show? Nowadays it would be easy to write a show where the main character was a Sheriff that had a lot of violence. Why do you think they decided to make this show like they did?
Sometimes Andy advertises products at the end of the show. How do you feel about that? Are there circumstances under which you would advertise a product? How do those advertisements differ from advertisements nowadays? - StarsCharlotte SpencerJules de JonghNaomi McDonaldJoin Angelina and Polly for fun-filled sisterly adventures in this All-New release!Suggested age: 3+
Suggested Audience: Sisters - CreatorTom RueggerStarsRob PaulsenJess HarnellTress MacNeilleThe zany adventures of a trio of 1930s animated characters in the modern world.Rated TV-Y7. Three siblings, two brothers and a sister, with a Bugs Bunny-esque penchant for bedlam, go on random adventures together, making chaos out of order. I recommend parents preview a couple episodes first, especially for young children. It has clever wordplay and visual gags, much like Looney Tunes, and the siblings do work together – to cause chaos – but the artwork is not pretty and the show can get rather frenetic. It’s noticeably less violent than Looney Tunes, however, which I consider a plus.
Sensitive age: 7+ or 10+
Suggested Audience: Sisters & Brothers, Brothers
Things to talk about:
What sort of animal do you think the siblings are?
Is it rude that many of the characters refer to all three of them as "the Warner brothers" even though one of them's a girl? Do you know why they do that?
In what ways do they manipulate reality in impossible ways? Do other characters in the show do impossible things?
Why do you think they decided to set the show in the film studio?
Do you recognize characters from any other shows? Do you think that counts as advertising other Warner Bros. shows?
What sort of things do the siblings do that drives other people crazy?
What sort of adventures do the siblings tend to go on?
Do they remind you of any other trickster characters?
How violent is the show? Is it better or worse that the violence is supposed to be humorous? Does the fact that nobody gets really injured make the violence okay, or is that a form of desensitization?
Are there "educational" elements to the show? Do you like that aspect?
How does this show compare to other animated works you've seen?
Is there any overarching plotline to the show? Is there any character development? Are those things always necessary for good storytelling?
Do the siblings get along well? Do they ever fight or disagree?
How strictly do the characters conform to gender roles? Why do you think the show does that?

An emblem of the avuncular system. A brother and sister who have lived together their whole lives and are childless, decide to adopt a boy – who turns out to be a girl named Anne. With an “E.” Like Victorian Farm, Anne of Green Gables is a role model film for the good life, with strong attachments to kith and kin. There's also an anime of Anne of Green Gables you might try if the children are interested. Based on the books by L.M. Montgomery.

She tries at first being only a businesswoman, and then only a parent, and discover both make her miserable. Eventually she creates a woman-centered business environment in which she can both parent and work productively, and is finally happy with her lot in life. Suggested Audience: Sisters - DirectorEstela RennerStarsLaura SchichvargerDiscoveries in neuroscience can help us understand childhood development. When a person is born, it is more than just a genetic load. We are formed by our relationship with everything around us combined with our genetics, The Beginning of Life investigates what separates us and what is essential to all of us, how we can create a better world by investing in the first years of our lives. The first part of the documentary focuses primarily on motherhood in European and European diaspora countries and is very moving and validating, and has one lovely clip of young children after another. The first part also contrasts developed European and slum-ridden Hispanic countries, but not in a graphic way that I think would be upsetting to children. The second part looks at motherhood in third-world countries in Africa, and in India, and is too bleak to show to younger children, and possibly for older children as well. Rated TV-G, but in my opinion that's too low. But don't let the second half scare you away from seeing the wonderful first half with your children!

A surprisingly warm and non-traumatic film, for the subject matter. It's much more about families loving their young men in the aftermath of war, than about war itself. There’s a very nice uncle-nephew relationship. Rated Passed.
Sensitive age: 10+ or 13+ - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsMark RylanceRuby BarnhillPenelope WiltonAn orphan little girl befriends a benevolent giant who takes her to Giant Country, where they attempt to stop the man-eating giants that are invading the human world.Rated PG. The two main characters embody the two main aspects of our humanity that patriarchy tries to take away from women and men: women's ability to be capable and men's ability to be nurturing. The girl is assertive, smart, and terrifyingly brave, and the BFG is kind, tender, emotionally sensitive, very concerned with the well-being of children, and vegetarian. The friendship between the girl and the BFG is beautiful.
Neither of the main characters has any romantic thing insinuated with any character - in fact, though the BFG said the girl would be having children someday, there was no mention of a husband, despite that prime opportunity to pair off the female lead that I think most movies would have leapt at. The only romance in the movie is a minor one between the Queen's two attendants.
In contrast to the BFG, the aggressive giants in the movie are portrayed as ugly bullies. And even though they are the bad guys and we aren't supposed to be sympathetic to them, rather than being killed or hurt, they get their comeuppance by being forcibly excluded from society. I am kind of uncomfortable with the fact that it seems the BFG was turning on his own kind, but nothing ever actually said the giants were related - and the BFG said he was "as old as the earth," so perhaps they aren't. He also implied that the other giants used to be more noble and had fallen, so perhaps if they are immortal he feels this is just another stage in their history together.
I recommend watching all movies with subtitles to help young children learn to read, but with this movie I think subtitles are a straight-up necessity. Based on the book by Roald Dahl.
Sensitive age: 8+ - DirectorTom McGrathStarsAlec BaldwinSteve BuscemiJimmy KimmelA suit-wearing, briefcase-carrying baby pairs up with his 7-year old brother to stop the dastardly plot of the CEO of Puppy Co.Rated PG. I have mixed feelings about this movie. On the one hand, the baby is portrayed as not really the boy's brother, and as being quite malicious and a source of competition for parental affection. On the other hand, it is ultimately about sibling love. There are a number of scenes which I think are much too scary and/or grotesque for a children's movie, so I would definitely recommend adults watch it first and be prepared to skip through entire scenes. I do not recommend the TV show based on the movie.

The siblings have to rescue each other from various perils, and one of the girls scathingly rejects the amorous advances of a prince. This clip, about caring for a lost penguin and the importance of mothers, is from the movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJFIp8-HZ9k
Things to talk about:
Did the siblings do a good job of taking care of each other?
What could Alvin and his brothers have done instead of lying to the babysitter?
How could you tell early on that the bad guys were the bad guys?
Would you like to travel around the world like these characters did?
Of all the places they visited, where would you be most interested in going?
Would you like to fly in a hot air balloon like they did?
What things in the movie would be much more dangerous in real life?
Were there gender stereotypes in the movie, even though the Chipettes were essentially identical female equivalents of the Chipmunks?
What would you do if you found out you'd been tricked into doing something, like delivering a secret package?
What would you have done if you were trapped there with the prince?
How would you have saved the baby penguin?

If you or your children are interested in this subject, I recommend Marija Gimbutas's talk "The World of the Goddess," which can be seen here:

As she says in the talk (1:40:00):
“The mother was really very important, and the father was just a consort, and the brother of the family took care of the children probably. He was the important one.”
I also highly recommend reading Marija Gimbutas's books, as well as The Well of Remembrance by Ralph Metzner, The Chalice and the Blade by Riane Eisler, Invisible Women of Prehistory by Judy Foster and Marlene Derlet, and The Powers That Be by Walter Wink. Marija Gimbutas's books are replete with pictures so they can be of interest to even young children as well.
