- DirectorHerbert BrenonStarsWilliam E. ShayWilliam WelshJane FearnleyRobespierre and Dumont were sworn friends in their college days. During their early manhood both loved Louise Brissac, but she favored Dumont and refused Robespierre's hand. Her father was the local magistrate and was blamed by the peasantry for the imposition of a severe tax. Robespierre was too wise to blame him, but had already grown to despise authority. Brissac was the representative of the rulers in the province, so Robespierre visited Brissac with a delegation of angered farmers. They were coldly received, and their anger grew until Brissac was saved from mob violence only by the arrival of Dumont, who persuaded the malcontents to withdraw. Time passed and the wedding of Louise and Dumont was postponed. Hearing of the mob disorders in Paris, Robespierre and Dumont leave with the Brissac. Robespierre although young and without influence soon dominates the assembly. Dumont although deploring the massacres is still the friend of Robespierre. The love of Robespierre for Louise grows in fervor as does the hatred for her father. Finally he sends Dumont to arrest them both as aristocrats. The father is arrested, but Dumont aids the girl to escape and is taken prisoner and sentenced to die. The father goes to the guillotine. The girl sees this and also the threatened fate of Dumont. In despair she decides to visit the tyrant and beg for her lover's life. This is granted to her on the condition that she give herself to Robespierre. Her soul revolts from this but the spirit quails when he shows her the carmagnole or devil dance of the revolutionists. She consents on condition that Dumont is freed and she in company with Robespierre's spy goes to the prison where Dumont repudiates the bargain and hurls the spy to the door of the dungeon. In the meantime, Tallien has impeached the committee of public safety of which Robespierre is the head, and a spirited debate ensues in the convention. This results in Robespierre's overthrow as he is brought down by the bullet of Meda, the assassin. Tallien triumphs while Robespierre is dragged away a wounded prisoner. Tallien hurries to the prison and Dumont is released. As he is hurrying through the streets in mad search of Robespierre in order to find Louise, the tyrant's victim, he meets the deposed fiend and he is menaced by a furious mob. He demands the girl, but Robespierre cannot answer. A commotion is heard and he sees the stealthy spy dragging the girl along. He hurls him to the ground and brings her to a place of safety. Later they view the execution of the tyrant and realize that their worst days of terror are over.
- DirectorAlbert CapellaniStarsGeorges SaillardJacques GrétillatCharles de RochefortThis film is not exceedingly well acted, but has the additional charm of being taken from the actual history of the man whose personality dominated the Committee of Safety in the early days of the French Revolution. It's tragic but enthralling, and full of the atmosphere of those more than troublous times of the French Revolution, when blood was shed like water and men seemed turned to beasts.

- DirectorD.W. GriffithStarsHenry B. WalthallFlorence BarkerW. Chrystie MillerBefore the revolution in France the nobility exercised a most despotic rule over the peasants, subjecting them to abject slavery. Not only did they suffer pecuniary oppression, but their humble households were invaded and defiled by the noble profligates. Henri Provost, a perfumer, receives a call from his landlord in quest of some perfume. During his visit this nobleman is attracted by Henri's pretty young wife. Her beauty so enthralls him that he, during her husband's absence, exercises his presumed rights, and invites, or rather commands her to attend his house fete. Here he dresses her in finery and promises to make a great lady of her, so that when her husband, who finding whither she had gone, bursts into the palace, she denies him. The heartbroken perfumer at first would return to the palace and in vengeance murder both his wife and the nobleman, but the old priest stays him, by showing him the crucifix, the emblem of Christian charity and making him swear he would never kill them. Indicating that vengeance belonged to God. Henri takes this oath and lives up to it. Some time later the peasants chafing under aristocratic tyranny revolt, with the perfumer a leader. The revolutionists invade the home of the nobleman, the occupants of which flee in panic. The nobleman himself, with the perfumer's wife, who is still with him, make their way to her former home, which she imagines is deserted. The perfumer enters, and upon meeting the guilty pair, sees his chance to wreak vengeance. He is about to run them through when the old priest again appears and shows him the crucifix, reminding him of his oath. He then waves back the mob, who haven't seen the nobleman, with the exclamation, "This is my wife." The mob dismissed, he takes the couple to an inner room where they exchange their finery for peasant's attire. Thus they leave to take their chances of evading intemperate revolutionists who are parading outside, devastating everything and destroying everybody aristocratic. What a bitter lesson she has been taught. Her covetousness has brought her only shame, terror, poverty and isolation.

Burnham is to be his agent. He does not think very highly of the job, but when the Marquis threatens him with imprisonment, he consents. That night he enters the Countess' apartments and succeeds in securing one of her slippers but is confronted a moment later by the lady herself. She proves to be the lady he rescued from the highwayman. Crushed and humiliated, Burnham tells his story and she believes him. He learns that she hates the Marquis and that the rascal is really trying to force her into a marriage in this cowardly fashion. Before she goes she gives him her slipper to take to the Marquis, but instead he keeps it and denounces that gentleman to his face for which he is imprisoned. The slipper Burnham entrusts to Bucknell for safe keeping, and the old seaman takes it to the Countess, telling her what has transpired. She helps Burnham to escape from prison, but he is captured by the Marquis's soldiers before he can reach the border. The Countess's influence, however, secures an audience with Queen Marie Antoinette, as a result of which the Marquis is humiliated while Burnham is freed, and marries the Countess.

This gentleman takes her in hand, marries her to one of his fat and ungainly cousins merely to gain her the power of a Madame and presents her at court. She at once is the King's favorite. Her love for wealth and her easily satisfied vanity bring her into high favor with the court. Her meeting with Cosse-Brissac (Fred Church) of the King's Guard brings something new into her life--love. So secretly she carries on an affair with him, hoodwinking the king despite Jean Du Barry'es efforts to have her hypocrisy brought to his lord's attention. On the contrary due to his constant interference, he is banished from the court. With Louis' death, Madame Du Barry and Brissac are unmolested until the outbreak of the French Revolution. Du Barry joins them and incites the mob to arrest Madame Du Barry. In the mock court of those unsettled days, she is convicted along with every other person who was in Louis' favor. At attempt to escape in which Brissac partakes only results in recapture with Brissac mortally wounded. And so Madame Du Barry ends her life on the guillotine--a life in which she, though sinful, was more sinned against than sinning. - StarsConstance CrawleyArthur MaudeHarry GriffithIn the magnificent grounds surrounding her home in Normandy, Charlotte Corday and Barbaroux are happy in their love-making, unwarned of the stormy events that fate has decreed should end their dreams. Marat, the leader of the French revolutionists, having plotted the death of the King, arrives at the home of Charlotte. Her beauty attracts his fancy, and finding her in love with Barbaroux, he tells them of his plans for the wholesale slaughter of the French nobility, and by cleverly insinuating that both Charlotte and her lover may be included in the list of those to be executed unless they embrace the cause of the revolution, he succeeds in inducing Barbaroux to accompany him to Paris. A year later, the revolution is at its height. The aristocrats are being brought to the guillotine by the thousands, and Barbaroux, expressing his disgust of outrages committed by Marat, is overheard by Danton, who betrays him to Marat. Barbaroux, hearing that Marat has ordered his arrest, escapes under a mass of rubbish in a cart, and is pursued by the soldiers. Charlotte, in reading her Bible, feels called upon by a Divine command to do something to restore peace to unhappy France, and sets out for Paris; on the road she is attacked by a mob of peasants. Later she meets the cart in which Barbaroux is escaping just as it breaks down, and Barbaroux emerges from hiding under the rubbish. They are clasped in an embrace as Marat's soldiers arrive and take Barbaroux a prisoner. Marat, hearing that Charlotte was seen on the road, orders the soldiers to find her, but she avoids them, and later while addressing the multitude from his balcony, Marat sees Charlotte in the crowd. Fearing to point her out lest the mob mistake it for an order to do her harm, he stops his speech and hastens down to get her himself, but she has disappeared. Charlotte, witnessing the guillotine, is horrified. She writes a note to Barbaroux, telling him of her determination to do a big deed to help restore peace. She allows the prison guard to kiss her in exchange for a promise to deliver the note to her love, and Marat, arriving a moment later, takes the note from the guard's hand, and discovering it is from Charlotte, goes to Barbaroux's cell and promises him his liberty if he will tell where Charlotte can be found. Barbaroux, unable to give the information, is brutally beaten. Marat, feeling, that the purpose mentioned in Charlotte's note is a vengeance about to fall upon him, is terror stricken, and in his panic is confronted by the vision of the people he has executed. The next day, Charlotte goes to Marat's house. Marat signs two orders, one for the immediate release and one for the immediate execution of Barbaroux. Showing them to Charlotte, he tells her she is the price of the one for his release. Charlotte pretends to agree to his terms, and Marat, after destroying the death warrant, calls upon Charlotte to embrace him, which she does, and at the same time kills him with a dagger which she had concealed under her cloak. Danton entering at that moment arrests Charlotte, and finds the order of release. Barbaroux is set free. Believing her mission fulfilled and that in causing the death of one man she had saved the lives of thousands. Charlotte mounts the scaffold and gives up her life that quiet may again reign in France.
