- CreatorKazuya MurataGen UrobuchiStarsMichelle RuffJanice KawayeAlan LeeWhile fighting an intense inter-galactic war, a mecha pilot was accidentally warped into a space-time neither he nor the computer of his mecha could recognize. After waking up from a long-time hibernation, he found himself trapped on a planet, with human residents talking in an unknown form of language, using inferior technologies, and - most shocking to him - naturally breathable air. This is by-far the lowest rated anime series on this list (by IMDB rating system), however, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Definitely different than the others, not as dark, action-packed, or "adult", but still fairly thought-provoking and entertaining.
- StarsAtsushi AbeNatsumi TakamoriTomoaki MaenoA young man named Koichi Sakakibara transfers to a new school where he finds himself drawn into a mystery involving a mysterious girl and a series of gruesome deaths.A creepy and enticing horror-mystery. Pulled me in and I enjoyed every episode.
- CreatorRumiko TakahashiStarsKappei YamaguchiRichard Ian CoxSarah HauserA teenage girl periodically travels back in time to feudal Japan to help a young half-demon recover the shards of a jewel of great power. One of my absolute favorite anime series as a kid. This is a long one with a lot of side story and unnecessary dialog, but still a classic. If you want the nostalgic feels, InuYasha has plenty.
- CreatorReki KawaharaStarsYoshitsugu MatsuokaHaruka TomatsuBryce PapenbrookIn the year 2022, thousands of people get trapped in a new virtual MMORPG and the lone wolf player, Kirito, works to escape.A solid action/adventure anime series with an intriguing futuristic concept of where gaming may one-day head. Not nearly as dark or gory as many of the others on this list. Some might even say it's "girly", but I found the mix of action and romance a refreshing reprieve from the melancholy found in much of this list.
- CreatorTensai OkamuraStarsJason LiebrechtKate OxleyChristopher SabatIn Tokyo, an impenetrable field known as "Hell's Gate" appeared ten years ago. At the same time, psychics who wield paranormal powers at the cost of their conscience also emerged.First season is fantastic. Second season, not so much. I wouldn't dock you for choosing to only watch the first season. But if you're already roped in and can't resist going on to season two, don't say I didn't warn you.
- CreatorKohta HiranoStarsJôji NakataYoshiko SakakibaraFumiko OrikasaA British taskforce, lead by the daughter of the vampire hunter Prof. Van Helsing, battles the supernatural with the aid of two vampires.I included this in my list only because I watched it. I recommend you skip this series and ONLY watch Hellsing Ultimate, which is also on this list. Much better animation, character and story development as well.
- DirectorMizuho NishikuboMamoru OshiiStarsAtsuko TanakaIemasa KayumiAkio ÔtsukaA cyborg policewoman and her partner hunt a mysterious and powerful hacker called the Puppet Master.I’m aware this is a cult classic that many fawn over for its unique mix of Matrix and steampunk before it was cool. Regardless, I found the dialogue boring and trying too hard to be thought-provoking. Only redeeming quality was the fantastic artwork; however, true in any fascist of life, beauty without substance just isn’t worth your time. I’d classify in the same genre as Ergo Proxy.
- CreatorYasuhiro NightowStarsKirk ThorntonLex LangSteve BlumGungrave follows the story of best friends Brandon Heat and Harry MacDowell as they join and rise in the ranks of Big Daddy's Millenion crime syndicate. The story begins in the future revealing Brandon Heat has become a creature now known as Beyond The Grave killing monsters with two very large guns and wicked looking machine gun on his back and that Harry MacDowell is now the Boss of Mellinion and has become a cruel leader who has earned himself the nickname Bloody Harry. The story strafes between the past and the future to reveal why Brandon has become a non-talking monster killer and the series of events that caused Harry to become so evil. The first half of the series focuses on backstory and character development. I know it can get a bit dull, but please believe me when I say it makes the second-half that much better. I recommend seeing this one through to the end.
- StarsNoriaki SugiyamaKana UedaBryce PapenbrookA group of seven mages gets chosen to become masters of seven classes of heroic spirits, in order to fight and win the Holy Grail. One of the spinoffs from Fate/Zero. Loses something from the original (perhaps the “new” or “different” factor) but not enough to deter you from watching if you enjoyed Fate/Zero. The action and animation are still top-notch. As someone who can turn off their minds and just enjoy a show for sheer entertainment, I found it worth-while. Probably doesn’t hurt to research the connection between these shows before watching so you don’t get the expectation of this being a direct sequel/prequel.
- CreatorNorihiro YagiStarsTodd HaberkornStephanie YoungHouko KuwashimaA deadly breed of monster - the Yoma - has only one foe: Claymore. These warrior women, human-Yoma hybrids, can deliver salvation by the edge of a blade for a fee. This is the tale of the Claymore called Clare's solitary path to vengeance.Give it a handful of episode before calling it quits on this one. Claymore really caught me off-guard with how much I ended up enjoying it. Do be warned, towards the end, it starts to veer off from the source material, but still is entertaining. Quite a bit more story left to be told in the manga after the TV series ends. A solid action/adventure tale outside of the normal modern setting, a refreshing change of scenery from most anime.
- CreatorShûkô MuraseStarsKôji YusaAkiko YajimaLiam O'BrienIn a post-apocalyptic future humans live in peace with androids in a domed city. However, a strange series of murders has intruded into bored inspector Re-l Mayer's life. Can be very slow and doesn't make a lot of sense much of the time. You're welcome to try it out and see if it's your cup of tea. More of a thinker than an action series, no doubt.
If you try this and really enjoy it, I'd recommend also trying Serial Experiments Lain (also on this list). - StarsNatsuki HanaeAustin TindleBrina PalenciaA Tokyo college student is attacked by a ghoul, a superpowered human who feeds on human flesh. He survives, but has become part ghoul and becomes a fugitive on the run.Gore-filled and dark, but balanced with warmth and solid character development. One of the few anime series that I truly enjoyed every episode and left me wanting more. Currently waiting for the series to catch up with the manga. Definitely recommend.
- CreatorToshifumi KawaseRyukishi07StarsSôichirô HoshiMai NakaharaSatsuki YukinoThe story of a group of young friends and the mysterious events that occur in the rural village of Hinamizawa.A creepy and enticing horror-mystery. Pulled me in and I enjoyed every episode - of the first season that is. If you like how the movie Momento is stylized, then you will probably enjoy this. Keeps you on your toes trying to figure out what is past vs present, fact vs fiction. Got a bit tedious by the time I got a few episodes into the second season and chose not to finish. I would still recommend the first season.
- CreatorYasuyuki UedaStarsKaori ShimizuBridget HoffmanDan LorgeStrange things start happening when a withdrawn girl named Lain becomes obsessed with an interconnected virtual realm known as "The Wired".Watched the first episode and called it quits. This "classic" series inspired the Matrix series and other works, but I just couldn't get into it.
- CreatorLynn OkamotoStarsSanae KobayashiChihiro SuzukiMamiko NotoTwo university students come across a seemingly harmless girl named Lucy, unaware that she's actually a mutant serial killer with a split personality.Probably one of the strangest on this list. Bloody, deperessing, and downright strange. Could take it or leave it, you're welcome to try it out.
- StarsMasato HagiwaraTsutomu IsobeKappei YamaguchiHiromichi Kojima, the star batter of the Lycaons, heads to the southern Japanese island of Okinawa to train and find a new pitcher for the team. There, he meets Toa Tokuchi, a 134-kmph pitcher and the undisputed king of a gambling form of baseball called "One Outs". At Kojima's urging, Tokuchi signs up with the Lycaons under an unusual contract: he gets 5,000,000 yen for every out he pitches, but loses 50,000,000 yen for every point he gives up. A high-level psychological game of baseball, gambling and logic is about to begin..
- CreatorGen UrobuchiStarsKana HanazawaMiyuki SawashiroNoriko HidakaBelieving in humanity and order, policewoman Akane Tsunemori obeys the ruling, computerized, precognitive Sibyl System. But when she faces a criminal mastermind who can elude this perfect system, she questions both Sibyl and herself. An action-packed crime thriller with a futuristic flare. With the added mystery element, my mind finds parallels with Minority Report - and that’s not a bad thing. First season is definitely better than the second. Give this one a try if you’re into the genre combination mentioned.
- CreatorRyôgo NaritaStarsMichael C. PizzutoJ. Michael TatumCaitlin GlassA crazy fantasy caper involving alchemists, immortals, gangsters, outlaws and an elixir of immortality, spread over several decades.Tried watching the first episode three consecutive nights and fell asleep each time. Due to raving reviews, I’ll probably try and pick it back up at some point.
- CreatorKinoko NasuGen UrobuchiStarsAyako KawasumiKari WahlgrenSayaka ÔharaSeven chosen mages and their summoned heroic spirits fight against each other to try and win the Holy Grail: a magical device that can grant any wish.An action anime that spawned multiple spin-offs due to its success. The combination of a unique premise and arguably best action sequences and animation of any anime I’ve seen, make this a compelling watch. The show ends up taking a pretty weird direction towards the end that I wasn’t crazy about, but the journey still made this watch worth it. If you enjoyed this, I’d recommend also watching Fate/Stay Night.
- CreatorYasuhiro NightowStarsMasaya OnosakaHiromi TsuruSatsuki YukinoVash the Stampede is the most infamous outlaw on the planet Gunsmoke and with a 60 billion double dollar price on his head the most sought after.Made it about 6 or 7 episodes in before losing interest. The pacing was just too slow to keep me from dozing off multiple times. Perhaps I’m just spoiled from action-heavy shows on this list. It’s an older one and brought feels of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, with a hint of Gungrave. Amazing anime to be compared with, right? Yes, but I found this to be a watered-down version. Perhaps I’m just not a fan of the anime-does-western genre. Feel free to give it a try if that’s up your alley.
- StarsMasako NozawaJôji YanamiSean SchemmelGoku is settled with his family and is living in peace. Unfortunately, his peaceful time is momentary as a visitor crashes into the planet claiming to be his brother.I got through the Frieza, Android, and Cell arcs, then put it down and haven’t picked it back up. Decided to give it a shot because nostalgia is a helluva drug. If you want to watch DBZ without drowning in unnecessarily drawn out dialogue, this is your show. I still found myself fast-forwarding battle sequences from time to time.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsYôji MatsudaYuriko IshidaYûko TanakaOn a journey to find the cure for a Tatarigami's curse, Ashitaka finds himself in the middle of a war between the forest gods and Tatara, a mining colony. In this quest he also meets San, the Mononoke Hime.My favorite Hayao Miyazaki film, enough said.
- CreatorYoshihiro TogashiStarsNozomu SasakiJustin CookChristopher SabatAfter a teenage delinquent is killed while saving a child's life from an approaching car, the rulers of the underworld send him back to become an "Underworld Detective" investigating demons apparitions in the human world.Truly a classic from my childhood that I recently re-watched in its entirety. I found myself skipping over some of the unnecessary dialog amid action scenes (same with DBZ), but overall this is a fantastic series. Made around the same time as DBZ and thus, has some style similarities. I highly recommend.
- CreatorKohta HiranoStarsKatie GrayCrispin FreemanVictoria HarwoodThe vampire Alucard, his master Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, and his newly sired ward Seras Victoria, try to protect England from a war-crazed SS-Major who seeks to start an eternal war with his vampire army.Intellectual dialog, paired with fantastic action and animation. I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this one.
- StarsMayo SuzukazeDorothy Elias-FahnRichard CansinoThe adventures of a young wandering swordsman who stumbles upon a struggling martial arts school in Meiji era Japan.
