A fictitious love story loosely inspired by the lives of Danish artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. Lili and Gerda's marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili's groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.
This movie is stunning in every way... The cast is perfection down to the simplest role. Eddie Redmayne is a master of micro expressions just like Tom Cruise, but from a deep, vunerable place. He imbues every gesture and look with the built up pain and love of an entire life. He transcends acting and becomes Lili. Alicia Vikander brings the wife alive with the soul of a true artist.
Even today the idea of gender and the role it plays in our lives is met with confusion... to see a character suffer the pain of a body that doesn't match what they truly believe themselves to be inside... in a world were every doctor jumped to prove it a perversion or pychosis. Was truly emphatically haunting.
The love felt through every moment lifts your heart in hope, and every time Lili or Gaby suffer pain is to suffer pain yourself.
There is no way to prepare for this movie, for the love and pain that will cycle till they are the same, but it will be so very worth every moment.
