- DirectorJ.A. BayonaStarsLewis MacDougallSigourney WeaverFelicity JonesConor, a twelve-year-old boy, encounters an ancient tree monster who proceeds to help him cope with his mother's terminal illness and being bullied in school.8/10 - 2017 started off with such an enchanting film, A Monster Calls grabbed my attention from the reviews. Although this film really is one of my favourites of the year. I specifically love how the message the film has about life. Some of the messages were very explicit to me, although they were still enjoyable.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsAndrew GarfieldAdam DriverLiam NeesonIn the 17th century, two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to Japan in an attempt to locate their mentor, who is rumored to have committed apostasy, and to propagate Catholicism.7.3/10 - I mainly saw this film out of curiosity as well as for a film that was different, and Silence definitely delivered. I love how the film has no music, and immerses you into the world with the atmosphere. My only major gripe with this film is the length and pacing, although intentional. The film became a bit tedious and bloated near the end. And the ending felt very slapped on.
I could hear the roar of Star Wars Rogue One's credits as the third act took place, and that motivated me to leave. - DirectorKenneth LonerganStarsCasey AffleckMichelle WilliamsKyle ChandlerA depressed uncle is asked to take care of his teenage nephew after the boy's father dies.8.3/10
- DirectorGarth DavisStarsDev PatelNicole KidmanRooney MaraA five-year-old Indian boy is adopted by an Australian couple after getting lost hundreds of kilometers from home. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family.8/10
- DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJames McAvoyAnya Taylor-JoyHaley Lu RichardsonThree girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.7.5/10
- DirectorMel GibsonStarsAndrew GarfieldSam WorthingtonLuke BraceyWorld War II American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, serving during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people and becomes the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot.8.5/10 - Hacksaw Ridge wasn't a film I had any high expectations for, my only expectation was that Hacksaw Ridge was going to be a film that I kind of liked, nothing more or maybe less.
However, I was unexpectedly shown the most brutal film I've seen that was released in 2017.
I will be honest, the first act was cheesy. And many aspects of the film were very unrealistic and Hollywood-esc. However, that was all forgiven from its amazing middle and final act. Mel Gibson has done a marvelous job of presenting a war that's devastating. Most war films rely on you to appreciate them just for the fact that they're based on real events, however this film develops itself and shocks you without forcing your opinion. - DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsRyan GoslingEmma StoneRosemarie DeWittWhile navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.9/10
- DirectorDenzel WashingtonStarsDenzel WashingtonViola DavisStephen McKinley HendersonA working-class African-American father tries to raise his family in the 1950s, while coming to terms with the events of his life.7.5/10
- DirectorBarry JenkinsStarsMahershala AliNaomie HarrisTrevante RhodesA young African-American man grapples with his identity and sexuality while experiencing the everyday struggles of childhood, adolescence, and burgeoning adulthood.8.5/10
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaAllison WilliamsBradley WhitfordA young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.8/10
- DirectorChad StahelskiStarsKeanu ReevesRiccardo ScamarcioIan McShaneAfter returning to the criminal underworld to repay a debt, John Wick discovers that a large bounty has been put on his life.8.2/10 - I specifically watched the first film to prepare for this film, and I thought the original was fine, although not a great film I would watch again. However, the sequel blew the first film out of the water by expanding and improving upon every issue in the first film.
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsHugh JackmanPatrick StewartDafne KeenIn a future where mutants are nearly extinct, an elderly and weary Logan leads a quiet life. But when Laura, a mutant child pursued by scientists, comes to him for help, he must get her to safety.8.4/10
- DirectorJeff NicholsStarsRuth NeggaJoel EdgertonWill DaltonThe story of Richard and Mildred Loving, a couple whose arrest for interracial marriage in 1960s Virginia began a legal battle that would end with the Supreme Court's historic 1967 decision.7/10 - Loving is probably one of the most forgettable films I saw this year, there wasn't much I cared for, this is another one of those historical films that rely on you to be awe struck by the fact that the events covered in the film really happened without making you care.
I'll give the film props for its atmosphere and visuals, although nothing was special about this film. - DirectorAnna BillerStarsSamantha RobinsonJeffrey Vincent PariseLaura WaddellA modern-day witch uses spells and magic to get men to fall in love with her, with deadly consequences.8/10
- DirectorDaniel EspinosaStarsJake GyllenhaalRebecca FergusonRyan ReynoldsA team of scientists aboard the International Space Station discover a rapidly evolving life form that caused extinction on Mars and now threatens all life on Earth.6.8/10 - Another cashgrab rip-off with some of the dumbest characters you'll see in a film, despite that the film had some tense moments in the beginning. Although as soon as the second act kicked off, the films' plausibility and quality fell like a rock.
- DirectorBen WheatleyStarsSharlto CopleyBrie LarsonArmie HammerSet in Boston in 1978, a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two gangs turns into a shoot-out and a game of survival.7.9/10
- DirectorDanny PerezStarsNatasha LyonneChloë SevignyMeg TillyIn a desolate community full of drug-addled Marines and rumors of kidnapping, a wild-eyed stoner named Lou wakes up after a wild night of partying with symptoms of a strange illness and recurring visions as she struggles to get a grip on reality while stories of conspiracy spread.7.7/10
- DirectorMilos FormanStarsJack NicholsonLouise FletcherMichael BerrymanIn the Fall of 1963, a Korean War veteran and criminal pleads insanity and is admitted to a mental institution, where he rallies up the scared patients against the tyrannical nurse.9/10
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsMichael FassbenderKatherine WaterstonBilly CrudupThe crew of a colony ship, bound for a remote planet, discover an uncharted paradise with a threat beyond their imagination, and must attempt a harrowing escape.7.2/10 - I got a superticket for this film, which enabled me to watch Alien, Prometheus and a pre-screened event for this film.
Although this film was disappointing, and ended up being the film I specifically didn't want the film to be, I still liked this film. As there were loads of aspect that could really shine if developed more on.
Covenant was purely wasted potential that was ruined by taking the easy route, instead of expanding upon Alien and Prometheus, the film instead combined Alien and Prometheus to make another 2 hour long teaser.
The film took a step forward where Prometheus refused to step, and took a step backwards where Prometheus stepped forwards. Many people have lost Scott's trust, although I'll see what happens with Alien Awakening, if the film is another teaser then I'll stop trusting him. - DirectorJoachim RønningEspen SandbergStarsJohnny DeppGeoffrey RushJavier BardemCaptain Jack Sparrow searches for the Trident of Poseidon to rule the sea while being pursued by old rival Captain Salazar and a crew of deadly ghosts who have escaped from the Devil's Triangle.5/10 - I never wanted to watch this film, in fact I was forced by my dad to see this film. And holy *beep* this is one of the worst film I've seen this year. The whole film is just a product made for money. There were a few unintentionally funny scenes, although the majority of the film was incredibly cringeworthy and poorly made.
- DirectorMichael Dudok de WitStarsEmmanuel GarijoTom HudsonBaptiste GoyA man is shipwrecked on a deserted island and encounters a big red turtle, which changes his life.9/10 - The Red Turtle unexpectedly became the best film of the year for me, I never thought I'd give a film like this an extremely rare '9/10'. However, this film was simply flawless.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattZoe SaldanaDave BautistaThe Guardians struggle to keep together as a team while dealing with their personal family issues, notably Star-Lord's encounter with his father, the ambitious celestial being Ego.8.1/10 - GotG2 was another one of those rare occasions where the sequel performed better than the first in terms of quality, as a narrative this film doesn't go anywhere, although what made this film better was the character development and humour. An aspect all films like this should perform in to be great films.
The film did everything a sequel needed to do, follow the original and expand upon and develop every aspect. I'm not a fan at all of Marvel films, in fact I absolutely despise the majority of superhero films for their bland decisions to cater towards entertainment rather than development. Although I believe that this film is up there with Logan and Deadpool in terms of the best Marvel films. - DirectorJeremy GillespieSteven KostanskiStarsAaron PooleKenneth WelshEllen WongShortly after delivering a patient to an understaffed hospital, a police officer experiences strange and violent occurrences seemingly linked to a group of mysterious hooded figures.6/10 or 5.9/10
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsAnsel ElgortJon BernthalJon HammAfter being coerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail.9/10
- DirectorTrey Edward ShultsStarsJoel EdgertonChristopher AbbottCarmen EjogoSecure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, a man has established a tenuous domestic order with his wife and son. Then a desperate young family arrives seeking refuge.8.5/10
