- DirectorMark RobsonStarsKim HunterTom ConwayJean BrooksA woman in search of her missing sister uncovers a Satanic cult in New York's Greenwich Village and finds that they could have something to do with her sibling's random disappearance. The combination of suspense/thriller plot, with the supernatural element of the Satanist cult, and the visual style, and the production factors of the film (cheap B-picture filmed in the studio, relying on shadows over budget, etc.), and the pessimistic and cynical mood of the film... "The Seventh Victim" is probably the purest horror-noir cross-over I have found so far. This movie is from Producer Val Lewton, who is a master of this genre, there are multiple films of his on our list.
- DirectorBoris IngsterStarsPeter LorreJohn McGuireMargaret TallichetAn aspiring reporter is the key witness at the murder trial of a young man accused of cutting a café owner's throat and is soon accused of a similar crime himself.Called by many to be the First Film Noir. This movie inspired many in both the genres, i.e. Noir and Horror. This is one of the finest use of Dream horror in a noir movie.
The photography by Nicholas Musuraca was beautiful moment by moment. He photographed Cat People, The Spiral Staircase, Out of the Past and The Jack Benny Show! The dream sequences were vivid and entertaining. - DirectorWilliam FriedkinStarsEllen BurstynMax von SydowLinda BlairWhen a young girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two Catholic priests to save her life. The best Supernatural Noir movie of all time.
- DirectorLambert HillyerStarsOtto KrugerGloria HoldenMarguerite ChurchillWhen Countess Marya Zaleska appears in London, mysterious events occur that lead Dr. Von Helsing to believe that the Countess must be a vampire. One of the prime horror movie that influenced the Film noir genre.
- DirectorCurtis BernhardtStarsHumphrey BogartAlexis SmithSydney GreenstreetAn engineer trapped in an unhappy marriage murders his wife in the hope of marrying her younger sister. This is highly ranked on my list because Noir Icon Bogart stars in this Ghost Noir movie.
- DirectorJacques TourneurStarsSimone SimonTom ConwayKent SmithAn American man marries a Serbian immigrant who fears that she will turn into the cat person of her homeland's fables if they are intimate together. This is the first movie produced by Val lewton, and it set the tone for the Horror Noir Sub Genre, which many great movie have since used.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsAnthony PerkinsJanet LeighVera MilesA Phoenix secretary embezzles $40,000 from her employer's client, goes on the run and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother. The Very definition of new age Horror Noir.
- DirectorBernard VorhausStarsTurhan BeyLynn BariCathy O'DonnellOn the beach one night, Christine Faber, two years a widow, thinks she hears her late husband Paul calling out of the surf; then meets a tall dark man Alexis, who seems to know all about such things.Christine hears the voice of her Dead husband, and then everything wrong that can happen starts to happen in this neatly made Ghost Noir.
- DirectorLewis AllenStarsRay MillandRuth HusseyDonald CrispA composer and his sister discover that the reason they are able to purchase a beautiful gothic seacoast mansion very cheaply is the house's unsavory past.Considered to be the most Lewtonesque Horror Noir movie. Its sequel The Unseen 1945 is also a great Horror Noir, penned by the great Raymond Chandler.
- DirectorJonathan DemmeStarsJodie FosterAnthony HopkinsScott GlennA young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims. With Silence of the Lambs comes some much needed recognition for the horror(or horror noir) genre. It is a first-rate production all around. It boasts a witty and suspenseful script based on the Thomas Harris novel, full of great lines. It has marvelous direction from Demme. Demme creates suspense very well throughout and uses some great directorial shots such as the twin frames of Clarice ringing a doorbell and the FBI men breaking into a home. The two lead actors won oscars for their performances...each deserved.
- DirectorBiren NagStarsBiswajeet ChatterjeeWaheeda RehmanManmohan KrishnaWhen a young man's family gets haunted by a spirit, he is warned not to return to his hometown, but he decides to investigate the issue.Want A Bollywood Lewtonesque movie ???
If Yes, you've just got lucky. Cause this is the only movie that falls in that category. :)
A Very atmospheric horror thriller! A man movies into the ancestral mansion where his father and grandfather had been murdered years earlier. Soon he hers the cries of a ghost woman who seems intent on his death!
Bees Saal Baad is very reminiscent of Universal's 1930s horror film or perhaps Val Lewton's moody horrors of the 1940s. Filmed in black and white the whole film has an effectively eerie quality. - DirectorMax NosseckStarsJohn LoderJune DuprezMichael St. AngelAfter suffering a head injury during the Blitz, an actor comes to believe himself to be the Brighton Strangler, the murderer he was playing onstage. After suffering a head injury during the Blitz, an actor comes to believe himself to be the Brighton Strangler, the murderer he was playing onstage.
- DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsMia FarrowJohn CassavetesRuth GordonA young couple trying for a baby moves into an aging, ornate apartment building on Central Park West, where they find themselves surrounded by peculiar neighbors.Paranoia of the unseen is a powerful way to tell a horror story without ever giving away any shock cuts or showing the boogeyman. While it becomes abundantly clear early on that this is a story of witchcraft of the worst kind, the only time some of it makes its way in front of the camera is in the extremely stylized ritual/rape scene, and even then, since Rosemary is having what might be the worst nightmare of her life, one isn't quite sure of what is happening, and of course, in the end, when all is revealed in a comic yet horrific way.
- DirectorAlan ParkerStarsMickey RourkeRobert De NiroLisa BonetA private investigator is hired by a man who calls himself Louis Cyphre to track down a singer named Johnny Favorite. But the investigation takes an unexpected and somber turn. The Satan himself in a neo noir.
- DirectorRobert AldrichStarsRalph MeekerAlbert DekkerPaul StewartA doomed female hitchhiker pulls Mike Hammer into a deadly whirlpool of intrigue, revolving around a mysterious "great whatsit".The End. Doom's Day.
- DirectorJohn FarrowStarsRay MillandAudrey TotterThomas MitchellA district attorney rises to political success and the governorship but loses his sense of morality once he starts associating with the shadowy and perhaps diabolical Nick Beal.Features Ray Milland as a diabolical character who just might be the Devil.
- DirectorMaxwell ShaneStarsEdward G. RobinsonKevin McCarthyConnie RussellA New Orleans musician has a nightmare about killing a man in a strange house but he suspects that it really happened.A New Orleans musician has a nightmare about killing a man in a strange house but he suspects that it really happened.
- DirectorEdmund GouldingStarsTyrone PowerJoan BlondellColeen GrayThe rise and fall of Stanton Carlisle, a mentalist whose lies and deceit prove to be his downfall.Psychological Horror at its best.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsMorgan FreemanBrad PittKevin SpaceyTwo detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motives. At par with Silence of the lambs in terms of noirish horror.
- DirectorRobert SiodmakStarsLon Chaney Jr.Robert PaigeLouise AllbrittonWhen Katherine, a beautiful Southern girl obsessed with thoughts of eternal life, invites Count Alucard to come to her mansion in the U.S., she unleashes a Pandora's box of horror on unsuspecting relatives and neighbors."Son of Dracula" succeeds on many counts, (no pun intended) by virtue of its absolutely serious approach towards its material. Unlike other Universal horrors of this period, with their unfunny comedy relief antics, (bumbling, pop eyed police inspectors, burgomasters etc.) director Siodmak wisely eschews such sch-tick, and foreshadows the tragic ending of the story, with an increasingly oppressive sense of doom. In other words, unity of mood.
Noirish? Very Noirish. - DirectorAdrian LyneStarsTim RobbinsElizabeth PeñaDanny AielloMourning his dead child, a haunted Vietnam War veteran attempts to uncover his past while suffering from a severe case of dissociation. To do so, he must decipher reality and life from his own dreams, delusions, and perceptions of death. The real driving force that makes Jacob's Ladder such a success is its eeriness. This is a horror film after all, both on psychological and more apparent supernatural levels. Lyne continually and disconcertingly pulls the rug from beneath not only Jacob, but the audience as well, yet manages to never make a viewer feel lost, instead producing an eagerness to solve the "mystery" while you root for Jacob.
- DirectorRobert SiodmakStarsFranchot ToneElla RainesAlan CurtisA devoted secretary risks her life to try to find the elusive woman who may prove her boss didn't murder his selfish wife. This noir may not be the best remembered film from the era, but it features a great mystery plot, the common noir atmosphere and some good performances from its lesser known cast members. Robert Siodmak, the talented director behind the mystery/horror classic 'The Spiral Staircase' directed this film two years earlier than the aforementioned film, and shows a real flair for creating a dark and brooding atmosphere as well as creating a plot that both intrigues and fascinates the viewer.
- DirectorRichard FleischerStarsWilliam LundiganDorothy PatrickJeff CoreyAn obsessed cop tracks an elusive serial killer who strangles his victims on rainy nights. An obsessed cop tracks an elusive serial killer who strangles his victims on rainy nights.
Rain Phobia? - DirectorMichael WadleighStarsAlbert FinneyDiane VenoraEdward James OlmosA New York cop investigates a series of brutal deaths that resemble animal attacks. While it fails to be as engaging or as scary as it should, this appears to have been a very influential movie ... it takes the genre of the gritty cop thriller and combines it with horror and science fiction elements to create an atmosphere that was later continued in movies like "Aliens" or "Predator". The pacing and the soundtrack of this movie practically invented a whole new genre that went on throughout the eighties. Even the idea of the distorted POV shots of the 'Wolfen' were used again in "Predator", and "Predator 2" moved the action back to a big city to create a very similar movie to this.
The reason it was so influential was because of the director, Michael Wadleigh, who was certainly extremely talented. It's a damn shame he didn't make more feature films as no doubt they would have been great. Everyone else involved in the movie does a reasonably good job -- Albert Finney gives a laid-back, worn-out performance which is really what the part called for. The best performance probably comes from Edward James Olmos, who appeared a couple of years later in the similarly noir-ish science fiction movie "Blade Runner". - DirectorRobert SiodmakStarsDorothy McGuireGeorge BrentEthel BarrymoreIn 1916, a shadowy serial killer is targeting women with "afflictions"; one night during a thunderstorm, the mute Helen feels menaced.Use of Killer's PointOfView shots in the stalking scenes. Why is it that this film isn't cited as the first movie to use this technique, which became such a staple in horror films after Halloween, which borrowed the technique from Black Christmas (generally cited as the first)???
No one knows.
