Horror movies and terror thriller you should know about.
Hint: the explanation for the ending in Martyrs is part of this list. marked with a spoiler alert. another hint: this genre of disturbing movies and terror movies seems to have no limits and the darkest of them break tabus. I refuse such material, and you won't find any of that footage on any of my lists. I strongly advise avoiding these as well. footage that isn't even worth calling "movies". To make clear what I am talking about, I will name 2 of them who are so well known in the public, that I don't give away any secrets here but they are "good" enough to make my point clear: Names like Salo, Serbians and more disgusting stuff which seem to have only 2 purposes, which are to feed sadistic preferences and breaking tabus. The movies that I have listed here aren't like that. nevertheless, some of them are disturbing, extremely violent and gory. consider that as a warning.

- DirectorS. Craig ZahlerStarsKurt RussellPatrick WilsonMatthew FoxIn the dying days of the old west, an elderly sheriff and his posse set out to rescue their town's doctor from cannibalistic cave dwellers.I've never seen anything like it. If you want to shock someone with unexpected horror in the second half of a film, this is the film for them. I even consider it as a must-watch movie before dying.
- DirectorKim Jee-woonStarsLee Byung-hunChoi Min-sikJeon Gook-hwanA secret agent exacts revenge on a serial killer through a series of captures and releases. This is a brutal and intense revenge thriller. I am not into Asian movies, but this one is the best of the genre. serious and sad and brutal, and a sick villain. great actors. a must-watch. 144 minutes of playtime seems a lot, but the director maintains the viewer's interest throughout the entire movie with constant tension. and with empathy for the protagonist. he doesn't want
to kill the villain for revenge, he wants to inflict the most imaginable pain and suffering on the villain for his revenge. therefore he keeps him alive as long as possible. - DirectorAlexandre BustilloJulien MauryStarsAlysson ParadisJean-Baptiste TabourinClaude LuléFour months after the death of her husband, a woman on the brink of motherhood is tormented in her home by a strange woman who wants her unborn baby.A gory terror movie. Serious warning: I don't know a movie that would be harder to watch, because of the gore scenes. I didn't make it through the movie without skipping some of the scenes. this was too much for me. Don't confuse it with the remake of "Inside". This original French version of "Inside" 2007 is known for being among the most horrific movies ever made. It's been said that it's quite possibly the most violent, realistic and bloodiest slasher film ever assembled. I wouldn't recommend it.
- DirectorBryan BertinoStarsScott SpeedmanLiv TylerGemma WardA young couple staying in an isolated vacation home are terrorized by three unknown assailants. If you sleep alone at night while you are the only person in the house, there is one movie you should never watch because you won't fall asleep anymore. the name of the movie is "The Strangers". An evil terror movie about a home-invasion
- DirectorZach CreggerStarsGeorgina CampbellBill SkarsgårdJustin LongA woman staying at an Airbnb discovers that the house she has rented is not what it seems.recommended to watch. scary as hell. well done horror. but there are scenes, that make you laugh and there is nothing you can do about it. great story, great actors and plot twists. extremely entertaining. promised.
- DirectorMatt Bettinelli-OlpinDavid BrucknerTyler GillettStarsCalvin Lee ReederLane HughesAdam WingardWhen a group of misfits are hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house and acquire a rare VHS tape, they discover more found footage than they bargained for.faces have a special memory connection in our brains. it is nearly impossible to get them out of our memories. sometimes we wish, we could delete these. because, from time to time, we suddenly see a disturbing or frightening face with our inner eye, that we have seen recently. whether we like it or not. that movie contains such a horror face. at least one.
- DirectorMike FlanaganStarsCarla GuginoBruce GreenwoodChiara AureliaA couple tries to spice up their marriage in a remote lake house. After the husband dies unexpectedly, the wife is left handcuffed to their bed frame and must fight to survive and break free. One of the scariest situations that I can imagine happens in real life. Without showing a ton of blood, without monsters, without paranormal activity, without disturbing violence. Anyways more frightening than most such movies.
- DirectorPascal LaugierStarsMorjana AlaouiMylène JampanoïCatherine BéginA young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.Be careful if you are a sensitive person. "Martyrs" is shockingly brutal, there is unimaginable physical torture, psychological terror, and horror, and it's heartbreaking. no other movie could shock me with its content
like Martyrs did. The thing is, that the "monsters" in the movie are NOT unreal. Not for the victims: they perceive them in the form of hallucinations and can't distinguish what is real and what is hallucination. This is exactly what is happening to someone who has been tortured like this. It is the deepest form of trauma.
In my book, Martyrs is in the top 3 of the most haunting horror movies ever. And to all the people who struggle with the ending, which is the majority of people: there is an explanation for the "unexplained" ending. One that makes perfect sense. it is not that hard. It is also discussed and resolved on Reddit but not easy to find. therefore I will spoil it here with a big spoiler alert for the ones who want to know it right away. But you could find it out yourself - if you think about it. Incoming SPOILER ALERT:
SPOILER ALERT: SPOILER ALERT: SPOILER ALERT: SPOILER ALERT: SPOILER ALERT: Madame doesn't tell him what Anna (the victim) told Madame for a reason: yes, there is an afterlife and God is watching above us, but only the ones who believe in God and the afterlife can enter heaven if their sins are forgiven. ONLY THE ONES WHO BELIEVE IN IT. As soon as you KNOW that there is an afterlife and God is watching all of us because you gained that information with proof, you can't enter heaven anymore. You have lost the ability to believe as soon as you gain that information before you die. the exception would be when you gained that knowledge by God's will when you had a vision, or if God talked to you.
believing and having a conviction (which is the strongest belief) is not the same as knowing. Knowing leaves no open paths. knowing is not free will.
What is the reason behind that: It is written in the bible, that God wants us to believe. every word in the bible counts, every word in the bible has an impactful meaning. And it is even a logical thing: If all humans knew with certainty that God was watching above us (like standing above us in the sky), it would be impossible to distinguish between the good people and the selfish/greedy/bad people who pretend to be good. believing in God is key. it is free will. Madame gained that information first-hand from the victim in the state of martyrium. Madame never believed in god, but now she knows for sure about all of this. so she lost the ability to believe. This is the reason why Madame is hiding that information from the members of the cult. they instantly would lose the free will ability to believe as well. therefore she said: "keep doubting". She kills herself to be ready for another reincarnation which is another start. because in this life, she lost the ability to have a belief in God. - DirectorBradley ParkerStarsJesse McCartneyJonathan SadowskiOlivia Taylor DudleySix tourists hire an extreme tour guide who takes them to the abandoned city Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. During their exploration, they soon discover they are not alone. It was not hyped and therefore it is overlooked. It's a low-budget movie, but it is very effective. A horror movie should scare the viewer. This movie scares the crap out of the viewer, no matter how many effects and money has been spent. The situation itself is scary. I mean, really scary. SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT: Imagine being in a group of 6 persons plus a tour leader - on an illegal sightseeing tour in the abandoned city of Pripyat next to Chernobyl, without authorisation. There is nobody else in the city. Nobody even knows that you are there. It's afternoon and the
group visits the abandoned buildings by walking through Pripyat, where 50000 people used to live. Then, at dusk, the group returns to the van. The van that brought them here. It's getting dark and they want to leave before the night. But they can't ..... someone has manipulated the car in the meantime when they were away. Now imagine the situation: There is no electricity in the entire city. No people. It's pitch dark. Only the starlight and the moon. And that group of 7 people sitting inside the van. They are the only people in the city. At least, that is what they thought. trust me when I tell you: this is a perfect horror situation. It's not a perfect 50 million dollar Hollywood movie, but scary as hell. - DirectorChristopher SmithStarsFranka PotenteSean HarrisVas BlackwoodTrapped in a London subway station, a woman who's being pursued by a potential attacker heads into the unknown labyrinth of tunnels beneath the city's streets.WAIT! before you move on. This movie is SEAN HARRIS' first lead role as a villain! This movie went under the radar because it was almost simultaneously released with the original SAW movie (which is not on that list because Saw is not scary enough). This movie is often confused with another movie with the same name which came after in 2015. And I am dead serious: This movie, CREEP 2004 with Franka Potente is perhaps the most underrated horror movie ever! It was a scary, disturbing, depressive, panic-inducing horror atmosphere that haunted me for weeks. That atmosphere is also a result of the ingenious sound design created by "The Insects". It starts right in the opening credits sequence.
- DirectorLucky McKeeStarsPollyanna McIntoshBrandon Gerald FullerLauren Ashley CarterWhen a successful country lawyer captures and attempts to "civilize" the last remaining member of a violent clan that has roamed the Northeast coast for decades, he puts the lives of his family in jeopardy. If you think, that a young woman in her 20ies who needs a bubble bath to become an attractive woman is not able to scare you, then you are wrong. she can and will scare you, trust me.
- DirectorAlexandre AjaStarsCécile de FranceMaïwennPhilippe NahonBest friends Marie and Alexia decide to spend a quiet weekend at Alexia's parents' secluded farmhouse. But on the night of their arrival, the girls' idyllic getaway turns into an endless night of horror. This movie is about a schizophrenic woman who murders when she switches to the 2nd personality. pretty disturbing. Some people have a hard time understanding the ending. But it absolutely makes sense. Schizophrenia means split personalities. It is a disease that does exist in the real world. More often than people might assume.
- DirectorGaspar NoéStarsMonica BellucciVincent CasselAlbert DupontelEvents over the course of one traumatic night in Paris unfold in reverse-chronological order as the beautiful Alex is brutally raped and beaten by a stranger in an underpass tunnel.warning: I wouldn't recommend it for the faint-hearted. It's always important to consider your comfort level when choosing what movies to watch.
This is a story told in reverse. I do not like that reverse thing. But the happenings in that movie are extremely disturbing. - DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsNaomi WattsMartin HendersonBrian CoxA journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone one week to the day after they view it.If you think, this is supernatural nonsense, therefore it won't shock and scare you. wait for the climax, you won't forget what you will see. you will find yourself in the scariest nightmare.

- DirectorJohn Erick DowdleStarsStacy ChboskyBen MessmerSamantha RobsonIn an abandoned house in Poughkeepsie, New York murder investigators uncover hundreds of tapes showing decades of a serial killer's work. This one is the closest to not being on this list because it is too sick. So be warned. This is a disturbing found footage film. Even though the film is not overly gory, and there are no monsters or paranormal things. It is the serial killer himself who is creepier than most of that stuff because of his sick behaviour. He's a mentally ill person and a sadist in the most horrible way. He enjoys torturing women like I've never seen in any other film. not for the faint of heart.
