- DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsJoaquin PhoenixRobert De NiroZazie BeetzDuring the 1980s, a failed stand-up comedian is driven insane and turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City while becoming an infamous psychopathic crime figure.Loved but for the wrong reasons.
It should be loved as a comedy, not a tragedy. A dark comedy satire of self-pitying Incel types with various funny moments littered throughout rather than a serious tragedy that pays homage to Scorsese's greatest hits.
It's not Taxi Driver and not King of Comedy.
Instead it has Joaquin Phoenix kissing a bald dwarf on the head as he fears for his life, or dancing in slow mo as the overused signature song of the convicted paedophile Gary Glitter can be heard accompanying this scene. It even has Joker literally shooting Robert De Niro in the head to signify its killing the king of the Scorsese tragic character studies.
Overall, Joker 2019 sees a director known for comedy movies take a comic book character who's been associated with internet losers, anarchists & even mass shooting perpetrators, and uses that character to play the ultimate prank on the audience. Anyone who takes the film as a serious incel-sympathising piece has been successfully pranked, and anyone who sees its true comedic nature has been introduced in on the joke.
Especially with the movie's unreliable suggestion it could've all been a dream, or how exaggerated the Joker's insanity becomes, or the outdated 80s Killing Joke style idea that one bad day could turn a man crazy. This movie takes that idea, dials it up to sardonic standards, and then laughs at anyone who fails to recognise the how the piece about the clown prince of comedy has played the unsuspecting prank on its audience. - DirectorGavin HoodStarsHugh JackmanLiev SchreiberRyan ReynoldsThe early years of James Logan, featuring his rivalry with his brother Victor Creed, his service in the special forces team Weapon X, and his experimentation into the metal-lined mutant Wolverine. As an overall movie it's terrible. But as an entertaining mindnumbing action popcorn flick, Origins Wolverine is one of the highlights of the X-Men franchise.
Not only that but when divorced from the overarching narrative, the movie's scenes work great as individual entertaining & memorable vignettes & setpieces. Things like the opening credits seeing Wolverine & Sabretooth running through different wars throughout time, or the cool guys don't look back at explosions scene, or Wolverine & Blob's boxing fight, or seeing how X-Men got his adamantium skeleton, or seeing Gambit on scene.
Plus there was the scene with the fast pace of the movie's action being brought to a surprisingly wholesome halt as Wolverine's brought into the home of a kind old family but that family are brutally killed and action resumes. That was a scene so good it was undeniably copied in 2017's Logan.
And with Liev Schreiber & Will.i.am making up a fun supporting cast, the movie makes for an overhated movie that should be a guilty pleasure for every viewer. - DirectorDavid FincherStarsSigourney WeaverCharles S. DuttonCharles DanceReturning from LV-426, Ellen Ripley crash-lands on the maximum-security prison Fiorina 161, where she discovers that she has unwittingly brought along an unwelcome visitor.the workprint version/assembly cut makes for a film that's just as good as Alien & Aliens.
the theatrical version deserves the hate though.
But when watching the right version, appreciating the early signs of Fincher's style, the phenomenal Elliot Goldenthal score, the understanding of the mood that's integral to the Alien franchise and the fact that it's a movie that deserves leeway for its marred production process too...then it's clear to see Alien 3 is overhated & deserves a new retrospective change in reputation - DirectorJon AmielStarsSigourney WeaverHolly HunterDermot MulroneyAn agoraphobic psychologist and a female detective must work together to take down a serial killer who copies serial killers from the past.was lost amongst the slew of 90s serial killer movies, but is an entertaining film with some compelling characters and really interesting expository scenes explaining the analyses the investigators are making from the pictures & evidence they have surrounding the murders.
Also takes a different more psychological approach to both the murders and the experts working against the investigators.
Is far from perfect or amazing though since it's definitely a schlocky film with some questionable plot decisions and a corny ending. But it's a movie that doesn't get the praise it deserves ultimately and is a highlight of both the serial killer sub-genre and the careers of the two female leads involved - DirectorSkip WoodsStarsThomas JaneAaron EckhartPaulina PorizkovaA former L.A. drug dealer has moved to Houston to make a new life for himself as a married architect. Everything falls apart when he is suddenly visited by one of his former cohorts who comes carrying heroin.a great Tarantino ripoff that stands above the other less memorable & less impressive QT ripoffs.
- DirectorAaron SorkinStarsJessica ChastainIdris ElbaKevin CostnerThe true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker game and became an FBI target.not hated but seems underrated. i rarely see people mention it or talk about it.
is a great film though with Aaron Sorkin's style beng great as always, even when he's now working as director rather than just screenwriter. - DirectorPablo LarraínStarsNatalie PortmanPeter SarsgaardGreta GerwigFollowing the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy fights through grief and trauma to regain her faith, console her children, and define her husband's historic legacy.not overhated just underrated. beautiful film score, aesthetic & leading performance.
- DirectorRobert RodriguezStarsCayden BoydGeorge LopezKristin DavisA young boy is recruited by his imaginary friends Sharkboy and Lavagirl to help save their planet. It's a kids film. If it entertains kids, then that's all that matters.
Has a wholesome childlike inventiveness with its characters, scenery and story, and is a visually fun flick like most Robert Rodriguez films are.
Overhated as a result. - DirectorBrian De PalmaStarsJosh HartnettAaron EckhartScarlett JohanssonTwo policemen see their personal and professional lives fall apart in the wake of the "Black Dahlia" Elizabeth Short murder investigation. It's bad but not thaaat bad. Josh Hartnett was a sub-par actor for the lead - hence why his career died after this, but Aaron Eckhart was fine, Scarlett Johansson was great in this the same year as her Prestige and Justin Timberlake music video roles, Hilary Swank put on an admirable show even though she was woefully miscast, and Mia Kershner was great as a lesser known actor to play Elizabeth Short.
The movie first and foremost was ruined by editing though. A 3 hour movie cut down to 2. As a result the plot is barely coherent. So I wouldn't recommend this to someone who hasn't read the book, but for readers of the book I think this movie will be interesting - as it was for me.
So plot aside, acting/castings aside, I liked the direction. The cinematography was great and is unfortunately neglected in conversations about the neo-noir visual style while other films from around the time (Road to Perdition, Sin City) receive praise for similar reasons. Also I liked the use of BDP's signature stylings..stuff like split screen, the depiction of Aaron Eckhart's death, etc were all cool and made this film at least a visually interesting adaptation of the book - even if it isn't a good adaptation of the story.
Aside from that, things like the acting from the Ramona actress were hilarious. Mommie Dearest level of bad acting from her and both her dinner table rant + suicide were hilarious. I also think some of the changes from the novel were interesting. I also think it was a bit disappointing several characters were reduced from the book like the Vogels, Millard, etc..but overall this movie isn't great but is instead a noble adaptation of an unfilmable book which probably was a decent adaptation of the book before editing ruined it. It's not a masterpiece, but it is an interesting film for readers of the book.
Undeserving of a 5/10 rating imo. I'd rather watch this than a mundane movie.
