Spinoff films from British Television Comedy
A number of spinoff cinema films were made from popular British TV sitcoms of the 1960s and 1970s. With only two or three TV channels at the time, the more successful sitcoms, like Dad's Army or Steptoe and Son, could regularly pull upwards of 12 to 18 million viewers for a single episode and as a result, the principal cast members became major stars. During what was a generally difficult period for British cinema, risk-averse studios were more than willing to try to capitalise on the small screen success of sitcoms and high profile talent. Sometimes it worked artistically, the movie adaptation of London Weekend Television's Please Sir being a case in point, while financially, the first movie version of LWT's On the Buses (1971) outperformed the year's James Bond, Diamonds are Forever, in the domestic market. But other offerings weren't so well-received. Here are a few examples; good, bad, and deplorable.
