- DirectorKathryn BigelowStarsJeremy RennerAnthony MackieBrian GeraghtyDuring the Iraq War, a Sergeant recently assigned to an army bomb squad is put at odds with his squad mates due to his maverick way of handling his work.cool movie just overrated. couldnt tell you what makes it so unique from other war movies or deserving of Best Picture
- DirectorLana WachowskiLilly WachowskiStarsKeanu ReevesLaurence FishburneCarrie-Anne MossWhen a beautiful stranger leads computer hacker Neo to a forbidding underworld, he discovers the shocking truth--the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence.must've been cool at the time, but is very overrated and hasn't aged well
- DirectorSam MendesStarsKevin SpaceyAnnette BeningThora BirchA sexually frustrated suburban father has a mid-life crisis after becoming infatuated with his daughter's best friend.also hasn't aged well but not for the Kevin Spacey reasons. Kevin Spacey being a predator adds to the pervy dad aspect of the film & adds irony to the scene of him turning down closeted down neighbour.
instead is overrated for Academy sweep it did and hype it received being Sam Mendes' first film.
Also due to how relevant it was back then but not so much now.
Also final sequence with voiceover to spoonfeed audience message that Kevin Spacey's character was good deep down inside. That was a fairly unsophisticated decision that lacked subtlety and seemed pretty dumbed down & direct.
overall still a cool movie, just eclipsed by other 1999 movies (namely Fight Club & Magnolia) - DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsLeonardo DiCaprioBrad PittMargot RobbieA faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the final years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.Marketed as a meta commentary on Hollywood presented through the story of various actors experiencing the highs & lows of their careers set against the sun soaked California setting.
In reality was just +2hr long self indulgent foot fetishising movie that only exists to build up to an over the top immature bloodbath as the climax.
If I want a movie similar to what OUATIH should've been, I'll watch Boogie Nights.
If I want another rehash of the same old childish revisionist history bloody revenge formula that QT has been churning out for every movie after Jackie Brown, then I'll bore myself with OUATIH. - DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloAfter the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to reverse Thanos' actions and restore balance to the universe. Not as good as Infinity War, screenplay & writing was messier, ending movie with generic 3rd act good guys vs bad guys battlefield brawl was predictable & disappointing.
also thor giving away asgard was a dummy move. asgard been in his family for thousands of years. he'd known Valkyrie woman for a few months before he became a drunk and never saw her for 5 years whilst in isolation.
After previously destroying the kingdom that had existed for so long months before his isolation, he then chose to give away the royal title, the rebuilt royal kingdom & family treasure of Asgard after his isolation to a woman outside of his family who he hadn't spoken to for 5 years and had only known for a few months? what a disappointment to his family.
Also time travel didn't make sense.
Overall was a reminder that even though some movies can be genuinely great, ultimately Marvel movies will always be condemned to being dumbed down kids movies. - DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansRobert Downey Jr.Scarlett JohanssonPolitical involvement in the Avengers' affairs causes a rift between Captain America and Iron Man.Absolute garbage.
Masqueraded as a serious political thriller which deconstructs the role of superheroes and explores the political ramifications and effects of their existence....what a complete mis-selling of the movie.
In actuality movie only existed to set up two fight set pieces. 1 = airport fight where the hero factions fight each other for no major reason with only 3 or so characters having genuine reasons to be involved in the fight. 2 = the end fight between the title character and Iron Man.
Not to mention movie abandoned development or character arc of titular character to instead just make an Avengers movie to sell tickets & toys.
Also had Captain America try to drop airport loading platform on the teenager Spider-Man without knowing he had super-strength. Trying to kill a teenager was out of character for him.
Overall not the worst movie ever. Kids will love it, nerds will love it, dummys will love it if theyre impressed by gimmicks like appearances of comic characters, stylised action & allusions to comic plots & specific panels. But in terms of the writing, depth or meaning, the movie was a lot more lacking that its creators are willing to admit.
A shame since its predecessor succeeds in all of those categories of depth, writing, character development, genre & seriousness. But this was a kids movie cash in to abandon any artistic merit from the predecessor. Same abandonment of quality in favour of commercial success that Marvel repeated with great Infinity War followed by child-orientated garbage Endgame - DirectorBrian De PalmaStarsAl PacinoMichelle PfeifferSteven BauerIn 1980 Miami, a determined Cuban immigrant takes over a drug cartel and succumbs to greed.A perfect movie if you have 3 hours to spend being lulled into a haze of coke, neon lights, Hawaiian shirts & Giorgio Moroder synth ostinatos.
But with one of the most over-the-top writers out there paired with one of the most over-the-top directors, and at 3 hours too...it's no surprise Scarface makes for an unsophisticated, dragged out and overrated gangster movie.
The film is definitely *iconic* with Al Pacino giving one of his best performances, Michelle Pfeiffer in a career defining role and the movie's aesthetic & soundtrack making Scarface a movie that's lived on through shirt surfaces, bedroom walls or its legacy within Hip Hop culture too
But with the iconic legacy aside, in terms of content only, Scarface isn't a good movie. And the misunderstanding from the viewers I described above who see Tony Montana as an inspiration rather than a hindrance only confirms that the 3 hours of Scarface still fails to deliver a meaningful message.
Just watch Carlito's Way in twice the time instead. Or watch Scarface once and then never again, because the garbage quality really comes through on the second viewings - DirectorOliver StoneStarsWoody HarrelsonJuliette LewisTom SizemoreTwo victims of traumatized childhoods become lovers and psychopathic serial murderers irresponsibly glorified by the mass media. An entertaining movie but not a good one.
Once again Oliver Stone shows why he's an over the top filmmaker lacking in depth though as he turns Tarantino's screenplay into a hokey half-assed commentary on America's irresponsible media fascinations of the mid90s (OJ Simpson murder case, Menendez brothers, Tonya Harding scandal, etc) with flashy music-video style visual gimmicks used to distract from the movie's average quality.
The two lead performances are competent though, and RDJ is very good. The soundtrack is also a memorable slice of mid90s music with NIN, Dr Dre, Tha Dogg Pound, etc all getting a chance to shine.
But as a movie it's hard to say NBK does anything other than turning two well written characters from a screenplay into on-screen psychopath caricatures who are then glorified & glamourised for 2 hours before Oliver Stone tries to guilt-trip & shame the audience for not being disgusted with his characters.
True Romance adapts the same screenplay in a much more faithful way, and tonnes of other movies deliver a satires on the media's fascination with controversy in much more interesting ways. - DirectorOliver StoneStarsAl PacinoDennis QuaidCameron DiazA behind-the-scenes look at the life-and-death struggles of modern-day gladiators and those who lead them.Another over the top puddle deep Oliver Stone film.
Just a bad movie. Felt like an MTV music video at points with the phrenetic camera work and the garbage late 90s rock & dance music soundtracking.
But rather than committing to that style as a deliberate choice, the movie instead bounces onto more cliches and generic styles like cramming the third act with all the melodrama & predictable tropes that you'd expect from the *worst* movies of this genre.
Overall it's trash. Jamie Foxx's Willie Beamen is the redeeming quality for this movie but everything else makes it a waste of 3 hours a reminder of how hackneyed & trite the sports genre often is, and a reminder of how woeful Oliver Stone usually is. - DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsChoi Min-sikYoo Ji-taeKang Hye-jeongAfter being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must track down his captor in five days. It's a good movie but I struggle to see why it's *so* acclaimed. The Oedipus allegory and the hallway fights are great, but beyond that as an overall movie I'm unsure of why it's so much loved and hyped up.
I'm also unsure whether the foreign aspect of it being a Korean film rather than Western production is a factor in it being overrated(?) - DirectorDavid FincherStarsBrad PittCate BlanchettTilda SwintonTells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with consequences.Screenplay was written by the same man who wrote Forrest Gump, and it shows with how similar the two films are.
Through a frame story and the use of voiceover narration, the two tell a similar story. Fatherless disabled white southerner meets the love of his life who parts ways from him rather than reciprocating his love, so he joins the military, goes out sailing on a boat and experiences important world events before coming home to find out mother has died. The man also becomes rich through sheer luck & his soul-mate returns ready to be with him. They have an encounter which leads to pregnancy before breaking up so the father is absent from the child's early life. The mother later dies from illness.
Not only that but it's also a worse version of Forrest Gump with David Fincher's drab cinematography & style being ill-fitting for an uplifting coming of age movie like this.
It's no coincidence tCCoBB is sandwiched between two of Fincher's best movies, with The Social Network & Zodiac being top notch movies that can excuse his attempt at making an Oscar-bait movie. But it still has to be noted that tCCoBB is just that - an Oscar baiting ripoff of Forrest Gump. It's still enjoyable & wholesome, but very derivative, unoriginal & the least interesting film in Fincher's filmography - DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsJeff BridgesJohn GoodmanJulianne MooreJeff "The Dude" Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire of the same name, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it.Just overrated by dude-bros for being quotable. not that great.
- DirectorJonathan DemmeStarsJodie FosterAnthony HopkinsScott GlennA young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.Similar to how the decade ended with American Beauty's success, the 90s also began with another fairly overrated & undeserving best picture winner.
Silence of the Lambs is still an enjoyable movie that's made iconic through the Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster characters, but I can't say it'd be nearly as acclaimed if it was released in a more competitive year - say 1994, for example.
I do appreciate it for giving birth to the serial killer movie trend that would come to typify the 90s, particularly the early-mid 90s, but I think this works both for and against Silence of the Lambs to show both its impact but also how it was quickly eclipsed in the sub-genre it gave popularity to.
So despite being a good film, Silence of the Lambs is more of a product of its time and seems most memorable for being an iconic torchbearer for the serial killer trend, rather than the Oscar-worthy pinnacle of the serial killer sub-genre that some people champion it as. - DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsRoddy PiperKeith DavidMeg FosterThey influence our decisions without us knowing it. They numb our senses without us feeling it. They control our lives without us realizing it. They live.Woke b-movie that would impress 11 year olds & hipsters. Not impressive or enjoyable to normal folks outside of that demographic though
- DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsSandra BullockGeorge ClooneyEd HarrisDr Ryan Stone, an engineer on her first time on a space mission, and Matt Kowalski, an astronaut on his final expedition, have to survive in space after they are hit by debris while spacewalking.Whole movie felt like one giant video game cutscene. So whilst it deserves acclaim for it's technical accomplishments, it's still not as great of a movie as people claim especially when compared to other great survival movies
