When the sheriff becomes suspicious of Roy and the brand on Daniel's horses, the latter has Roy steal Midnight to get rid of him. The stallion tramples Roy to death when the latter attack him, and Scott rides away on Midnight to prevent Bill from shooting the animal. Scott hides his horse, and with Cindy's aid dresses Midnight's wounds. The sheriff convinces Bill that Roy attacked Midnight first. The horse beats off a mountain lion, and Bill wins back Scott's friendship when he shots the lion as it threatens Scott. The sheriff informs Scott that Daniel's horses were stolen from horse-traders who were shot. Scott tells this to Daniel, who knocks out Scott and plans to kill the sheriff.

Mark Palmer, the gambler who caused the death of Steve's father, is a passenger. In town, Steve meets Sue Evans, who is going to work for saloon owner Bart Osborne. Palmer and Osborne are working together and want Ryder's ranch, and they develop a plan to have Red fight Palmer's pugilist, Bull Mason. Steve, a boxer in college, takes Red's place. Steve loses to Mason, but before Red can determine whether it was a fair fight, a rider reports a robbery of the stage office. Red goes after the outlaws, and the gold is recovered. Red maneuvers a fight with Mason, and beats him after Mason drops a piece of lead pipe hidden in his hand. Palmer admits to having murdered Steve's father, and Steve learns that Sue was forced to work for Osborne to pay off a debt owed by her brother.

Nova is given a trial by fire by the tribe and vindicated. Lorita rides to the Army post and gets the Colonel to arrest Connors and his henchman Morgan. Lorita learns that she is the daughter of the legendary Ramona and marries Navo, who is made agent for the reservation.

The reason that Tony believes this is because he has dropped several pointed hints to Jimmy that Jimmy will stay healthy after the fight only if he emerges the loser. Jane Cunningham, Chester's younger daughter, suspects something is up and enlists the aid of her fellow reporter, "Ace" Martin. They pay a call on Tony and "Ace" threatens to blast him in the press. But before he can, Tony has him blasted in the alley. The police secretly assign a member of the homicide detail, Kroner, to keep a close watch on Tony.Helen hears about the fight via ship-to-shore and sends Jimmy a wire breaking their engagement. Jimmy has already accepted his end of the money and used it to bail out the business of his future father-in-law. Jimmy wins the fight, but gets hammered a bit doing so and has to go to the hospital. And Tony sends a henchman to the hospital to deliver a message to Jimmy.
