- DirectorDavid YatesStarsDaniel RadcliffeEmma WatsonRupert GrintWith their warning about Lord Voldemort's return scoffed at, Harry and Dumbledore are targeted by the Wizard authorities as an authoritarian bureaucrat slowly seizes power at Hogwarts.I don't understand why people have this movie so low. This movie has everything you could ever want in a Harry Potter movie. Fun action, quirky new characters, and tons of heart. For this discussion, I'll break it up into those categories.
The action in this movie is well done; you have the battle in the Ministry vault, which is really tense and exciting. The fight in the Death chamber, also located at the Ministry, is heartbreaking and thrilling. The action here is a highlight.
The two new characters here are Luna Lovegood and Dolores Umbridge and man, these are good additions. Luna Lovegood is a weird, shy, and well-minded witch who helps Dumbledore's army in the climax of the film. Then we have Dolores Umbridge, the most hate-able character in all these movies. She actively tries to take more control of the school and is a puppet of the head of the ministry to mask the fact that the ministry is corrupt and has returned. Both these characters are great additions to this movie.
And finally, this movie's heart is underrated. Mainly the part where Voldemort manages to infiltrate Harry's mind and Harry has to fight him from within. Realizing his strength in love will get help him through the dark times, he manages to defeat Voldemort, and soon, people realize he has come back, and everything there on gets real.
Overall this probably has to be the most slept-on movie in this franchise, and I recommend giving it a watch. - DirectorDavid YatesStarsDaniel RadcliffeEmma WatsonRupert GrintAs Harry, Ron and Hermione race against time and evil to destroy the Horcruxes, they uncover the existence of the three most powerful objects in the wizarding world: the Deathly Hallows. This is probably the movie where people either love or hate me with my rankings here. Before I give my thoughts a common criticism of this movie is that it feels like filler leading up to part 2 and...I can see where people are coming from. This movie is the set up to the finale there's no denying that, however some of the claims that this movie is 'boring' and 'a slog to get through' are mostly blown out of proportion. This movie is the beginning of the end for the characters we have spent the last six movies with and man this is a personal favorite of mine. Harry, Hermione, and Ron get a lot of time to reflect upon everything thats happened not only in this movie but the previous movies and these are the moments I love the most. Especially Ron and wanting to be with his family during the dark times they're thrusted into, Rupert Grint really sold these moments and I fully commend him. The action here is underrated, the opening chase, the Ministry of Magic break in, and the Malfoy manor fight are highlights. Mainly I love this movie for the character moments and lesser so on the action and over arching story so if you have this farther down on your list just keep that in mind. Overall I love and recommend this movie!
- DirectorMike NewellStarsDaniel RadcliffeEmma WatsonRupert GrintHarry Potter finds himself competing in a hazardous tournament between rival schools of magic, but he is distracted by recurring nightmares.I will admit I did fall asleep during this movie but that was because I needed sleep and not due to the movie's quality.
The Goblet of Fire is a good installment as it introduces the return of Voldemort, the big bad of the series, and states it clear as people (students) can die within the movies proving no one is safe. The Tri-Wizard Tournament is fun with Harry starting to show how powerful he is compared to other wizards going up against students 3-5 years older than him. The other schools could've been more fleshed out as for me, someone who didn't read the books, needed more backstory/context. They also start to tackle teenage romance in this movie and I can relate with the way they did it; as they all know about love and many of them want to have dates and couples but are just too young to where they shouldn't be thinking about that stuff at the moment and should just have fun. My only complaint is during the ball scene after the elegant waltz they have a full-on DJ playing rock music that ultimately shot this movie in the foot for me as this is Hogwarts and this sort of technology shouldn't be here; they did music/technology better in Deathly Hallows Part 1. Overall good movie! - DirectorChris ColumbusStarsDaniel RadcliffeRupert GrintEmma WatsonAn orphaned boy enrolls in a school of wizardry, where he learns the truth about himself, his family and the terrible evil that haunts the magical world. The original is no doubt a classic and when I finally sat down to watch it I was surprised by how much I loved it. My sister and I were cracking jokes in our car (2021 drive in movie) and were trying to shut up as we both wanted to watch the movies' conclusion. I love this movie...and it pains me to put it down here, there's nothing major wrong with the film it's more of what came after for me to put it here. Although I still need to think through if I like this or Goblet of Fire more but in general I loved the darker direction they went with the future films; and yes I get how the "magical whimsy wares off as the years progress from 3 onward" but it's still odd the tonal change that these movies went through. From the boat ride to Hogwarts, the first Quiditch game, Muffy the three headed dog, the Giant Chess Chamber, the final battle, introducing the world of Hogwarts, and of course...SNAPE (God I love Snape so much, such a well developed character). This movie will always hold a place in my heart.
- DirectorChris ColumbusStarsDaniel RadcliffeRupert GrintEmma WatsonHarry Potter lives his second year at Hogwarts with Ron and Hermione when a message on the wall announces that the legendary Chamber of Secrets has been opened. The trio soon realize that, to save the school, it will take a lot of courage. For a long time, this used to be my least favorite of the originals for various reasons. "So many things that could've been tweaked to make this on par or even surpass the original!" is what I would've said a month ago however the more I watch this movie the more I fall in love with it. Granted here are my main flaws.
1: The way Harry is pinned for all these crimes is like a bad game of Among Us (how to date your article 101), seriously they're wizards, can't they just tap into his head or realize he's 12 years old?
2: This movie is 2 hours and 40 minutes long and it kinda shows, this movie is 8 minutes longer than The Dark Knight, and while TDK has great pacing and keeps the story rolling this movie really likes to take its time on if the characters believe Harry killed the cat. Yeah, they could've tightened up this movie.
However with the opening car flying scenes being just so endearing, the mystery aspect that even though I know how it plays out is fun to watch every single time, the basilisk fight...this is a movie where if you didn't like it the first time please give it another shot. - DirectorDavid YatesStarsDaniel RadcliffeEmma WatsonRupert GrintAs Harry Potter begins his sixth year at Hogwarts, he discovers an old book marked as "the property of the Half-Blood Prince" and begins to learn more about Lord Voldemort's dark past.Ok let's get this out of the way, Dumbledore's death is really sad and is one of the best scenes in the entire original movies there's no doubt about that. However everything outside of Dumbledore's death...kinda generic, granted it's miles above COG as the scenes are still a delight to watch through and the acting from the main trio still clicks very well. However the love/romance story just doesn't land as how it was handled in GOF which is a blow cause from what I've heard they decided to inflate the love story far beyond what was actually in the book. The action is exceptional with a standout moment being the ring of fire scene which is down right amazing. But I have one feeling that I can't shake...this just feels like an add on to The Deathly Hallows movies, and originally that was a good thing but over time it has shown to be a fault as the movie (in my opinion) fails to create its own identity. This movie is still a good watch just like all the original movies but this one is (at the current moment) the worse of them.
- DirectorDavid YatesStarsEddie RedmayneKatherine WaterstonDan FoglerGellert Grindelwald plans to raise an army of wizards to rule over non-magical beings. In response, Newt Scamander's former professor, Albus Dumbledore, seeks his help to stop him.Surprisingly this is my favorite Fantastic Beasts movie. I heard so many bad things about this movie before seeing it, and I'm glad to say it's not *as* bad as what some people say (granted, it isn't anything special either. The characters are still as bland as ever besides the addition of Johnny Depp's Grindelwald as he injects life into this otherwise bland movie; the fight scenes at the end were kinda cool, although I don't remember why that one lady joins the dark side (for lack of better terms lol). Overall this movie, like the whole trilogy, is very forgettable; I can only name 1-3 key moments from this movie, which is bad considering the original movies have tons of memorable moments. All the Fantastic Beast movies are skippable; they add nothing to the original movies and kinda brings down the whole movie franchise.
- DirectorDavid YatesStarsEddie RedmayneKatherine WaterstonAlison SudolIn 1926, magizoologist Newt Scamander arrives in New York during his worldwide tour to research and rescue magical creatures as something mysterious leaves trails of destruction in the city, threatening to expose the wizarding world. So this was the first "Harry Potter" I went to see in theaters because I was too young to see the original movies in theaters, and...the movie was a slog to get through. Granted I didn't know anything about the Wizarding World up to that point so that might be a reason why it was a slog, so after I watched the original movies...it was still a slog to get through. This movie is bland compared to its counterparts, lacking the magical feel and atmosphere that made the originals so engaging. I think I've narrowed it down to 3 reasons why it's a slog.
1: The Characters
I could not care for them; Newt as a protagonist is bland most of the supporting cast is forgettable with the material they have been given.
2: The Setting falls flat
1920s America should have worked wonders for this movie and it pains me to see it fall flat. Other than the Ellis Island portions they don't really use this interesting period in time to their advantage.
3. There isn't a lot of material to work with
When I mention this, I'm talking about the story and not the full book of facts about these creatures. JK wrote a new screenplay for this movie, and you can tell it's been Hollywoodfied to fit the Hollywood format rather than the Potter format that focuses on our main trio and their struggles growing up. Granted, all the FB movies have this issue so take this as what you will. - DirectorDavid YatesStarsEddie RedmayneJude LawEzra MillerAlbus Dumbledore knows that Gellert Grindelwald is moving to take control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he asks Newt Scamander to lead an intrepid team on a dangerous mission. And here we are...what a lackluster spin off franchise. This movie does the most remarkable thing I've ever seen, no matter how many times I try to sit down and watch it it always manages to put me to sleep! And in a franchise where you want to encapsulate me with the magical whimsy of the sights you're beholding upon me this was a major let down. If Morbius was a more enjoyable watch then this you know you done goofed, by the way Morbius is not as bad as what people say just imagine it as a stand alone story. What was I talking about again, you get my point, if I'm trailing off talking about another movie because this one was so boring you know you've lost your audience and it showed by the box office numbers. Also Johnny Depp not returning as Grindlewald is a crime, he brings a certain energy to his characters that even though the previous movies were middle of the road you could tell he was having some fun. I'd recommend skipping this one.
