Historically these pairings were of two male characters with contrasting personality traits, which offered viewers a unique dynamic that differed to that of opposite-sex couples on screen.
The roots of buddy films can be traced back to male-male comedic duos of the 1930s through 1960s. Double acts such as Abbott & Costello, Laurel & Hardy, and Wheeler & Woolsey set the stage for the style of comedic pairing that developed over time.
During the 1960s through 1970s, buddy films were created in a backlash against the rising feminist movement of the time. These films removed women from the central focus of the narrative, and further focused on the developing and often contrasting relationships between the male grouping on screen.
