- DirectorChristian RiversStarsHera HilmarRobert SheehanHugo WeavingIn a post-apocalyptic world where cities ride on wheels and consume each other to survive, two people meet in London and try to stop a conspiracy.I think this one suffered for being too far out there for some people. Visually stunning and original. If only it had of done better, we would have got other adaptations from the books.
- DirectorLuc BessonStarsDane DeHaanCara DelevingneClive OwenA dark force threatens Alpha, a vast metropolis and home to species from a thousand planets. Special operatives Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.First off I will say, Dane DeHann and Cara Delevingne were totally miscast in this film. But again, as with Mortal Engines his was visually stunning and a real thrill ride.
- DirectorAndrew StantonStarsTaylor KitschLynn CollinsWillem DafoeTransported to Barsoom, a Civil War vet discovers a barren planet seemingly inhabited by 12-foot tall barbarians. Finding himself prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter Woola and a princess in desperate need of a savior. Not totally sure why this one failed. Got a feeling it was down to the marketing. And maybe people lack of familiarity with the John Carter - Warlord of Mars stories. Either way, a cracking film.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsHarrison FordRutger HauerSean YoungA blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.I know this has since been reassessed, and is now regarded as a classic. But at the time of its release it was panned. It is a stunning looking film noir, and when I first saw it back in 82, I knew I had seen something special. It remains one of my all time favourites to this day.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsHarrison FordRyan GoslingAna de ArmasYoung Blade Runner K's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years.Almost the same reasons as the predeceasing movie. I was very concerned when I first heard of a sequel to the original, because of my adoration of the 1982 classic. But I was very pleased to see that not only did Denis Villeneuve respect the original, but also built on its legacy. I can understand that this movie was a little overlong for the average audience, but I had no such issues. Great movie.
- DirectorRupert SandersStarsScarlett JohanssonPilou AsbækTakeshi KitanoIn the near future, Major Mira Killian is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals. This movie was unfairly accused of "whitewashing" the lead character, Major. Something that the original manga writer, Shirow Masamune said was not an issue to him. He said he had never envisioned the Major of being any particular ethnicity. I feel the whitewashing claims not only damaged this movies box office ratings but also any subsequent possible anime adaptations. Directors and Studios not willing to face a similar backlash.
- DirectorTerry GilliamStarsJohn NevilleEric IdleSarah PolleyAn account of Baron Munchausen's supposed travels and fantastical experiences across late 18th-century Europe with his band of misfits.Again I'll admit not to being over keen on this movie of first viewing. I think I was a little overwhelmed by the visuals and story telling. I've since grown to love it. Being the last part in Gilliam's trilogy about the ages of man. Time Bandits being about childhood. Brazil about adulthood. And Baron Munchausen about old age.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsMark RylanceRuby BarnhillPenelope WiltonAn orphan little girl befriends a benevolent giant who takes her to Giant Country, where they attempt to stop the man-eating giants that are invading the human world.I think this one failed due to is being too British a story for the worldwide market. Shame. It's great movie, and Mark Rylance performance (as always), was stunning as the CGI giant.
- DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittEmma ThompsonMartin ShortJim Hawkins is a teenager who finds the map of a great treasure hidden by a space pirate. Together with some friends, he sets off in a large spaceship, shaped like a caravel, on his quest.Yeah. Got no idea why this one failed. Famous story. Glorious animation. Disney being the makers. Odd.
