- DirectorJames MangoldStarsHarrison FordPhoebe Waller-BridgeAntonio BanderasArchaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary artifact that can change the course of history. The character of Indiana Jones and these movies as a whole mean so much to me and were such a massive part of my childhood so the fact that I get to see Harrison Ford play this character one more time is already enough to make it my most anticipated movie of the year. While it’s a bit disappointing that Spielberg isn’t directing, I honestly think I have more faith in the film with James Mangold helming it. While I do have some concerns, I ultimately just want to see the film that I’ve been hearing and speculating about since I was a child.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsCillian MurphyEmily BluntMatt DamonThe story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb.As someone who’s been a massive Nolan fan for over a decade I’ve been dying to see him getting out of his usual trappings with a film like this for a long time. I’m glad to see him getting back to a character study after his last few films were lacking in that department. The story of Oppenheimer is fascinating and I think Nolan has the potential to bring a wholly unique approach to it with the incredible visuals he’s become known for. Cillian Murphy is an outstanding actor and I couldn’t imagine a better choice for this role, he’s overdue for a leading part like this and I’m so glad Nolan is finally giving that to him.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsTimothée ChalametZendayaRebecca FergusonPaul Atreides unites with Chani and the Fremen while seeking revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family.Dune: Part One lived up to my expectations in every conceivable way but despite that I was never completely hopeful that we’d see any sort of continuation just because of how much was working against it being financially successful. So the fact that we’re even getting this movie feels like such a miracle to me and I could not be more excited to see Denis Villeneuve continue this story and I truly believe that It’ll be up to the standard he set with that first film. I’m not expecting a sequel but rather the same film just continued and considering I adored that film so much I can’t imagine anything less than another masterpiece.
- DirectorChristopher McQuarrieStarsTom CruiseHayley AtwellVing RhamesEthan Hunt and his IMF team must track down a dangerous weapon before it falls into the wrong hands.I’m done having anything other than complete faith in this franchise. 4 and 5 were amazing and Fallout was one of the best action movies I’ve ever seen and for me one of the best films of the last decade. I’ve no reason to doubt Cruise and McQuarrie will work their magic again and of all the movies coming out this year it’s the one I most know will live up to my expectations. I’ve loved the Mission Impossible Franchise for a long time so I’m sad to see it ending but I couldn’t be more excited to see how one of my all time favourite franchises is going to conclude.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioRobert De NiroLily GladstoneWhen oil is discovered in 1920s Oklahoma under Osage Nation land, the Osage people are murdered one by one - until the FBI steps in to unravel the mystery.Martin Scorsese is one of the best directors of all time and this film doesn’t look like anything he’s ever done before. The cast is great, it’s so exciting to finally see DiCaprio and De Niro both in a Scorsese movie, and the story is fascinating. Scorsese has rarely had a misstep as a director so I can’t wait to see this story through his eyes.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsMichael FassbenderTilda SwintonCharles ParnellAfter a fateful near-miss, an assassin battles his employers and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn't personal.I love it when Fincher returns to his darker roots like he’s doing with this film and at the same time it doesn’t look like he’s repeating himself at all. I can’t wait to see Fassbender in this role and I want this to leave me with the same dark feeling that The Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl did. After such a long hiatus it’s so satisfying to see him back on a regular basis and doing such interesting projects.
- DirectorCraig GillespieStarsPaul DanoPete DavidsonVincent D'OnofrioDavid vs. Goliath tale about everyday people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop (the video-game store) into the world's hottest company.I really think that Craig Gillespie has emerged as an amazing talent to watch out for and I was massive fan of the style and sensibilities he brought to I, Tonya, Pam & Tommy and even Cruella so I want to see him bring that same kind of vision to this movie. The story is fascinating and it sounds ripe for a lot of dark comedy and absurdist humour along the lines of something like The Wolf of Wall Street and War Dogs. I really love about ridiculous true story’s told in an equally ridiculous way and that’s ultimately what I think this film will deliver.
- DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsHenry CavillBryce Dallas HowardSam RockwellA reclusive author who writes espionage novels about a secret agent and a global spy syndicate realizes the plot of the new book she's writing starts to mirror real-world events, in real time.I think Matthew Vaughn is one of the best and most stylised action directors working today, I like almost all of his films and I’m really excited to see him do something different with this film. The cast is absolutely outstanding and while the story isn’t wholly original I’m excited to see how Vaughn executes it plus Henry Cavill has proven more than once that he thrives in a spy movie setting.
- DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsDave BautistaJonathan GroffBen AldridgeWhile vacationing, a girl and her parents are taken hostage by armed strangers who demand that the family make a choice to avert the apocalypse.M. Night Shyamalan has made some truly terrible films but also some great ones and the one thing I’ll always say about him is that he’s never made a film I don’t at least find interesting and worth talking about. I can’t remember the last time a trailer got me so onboard with a movie I was only mildly anticipating originally, I think it looks great and I’m so happy to see Dave Bautista get roles like this where he gets to stretch his talents as a dramatic actor. Whether it’s good or not I know there’ll at least be plenty to talk about.
- DirectorChad StahelskiStarsKeanu ReevesLaurence FishburneGeorge GeorgiouJohn Wick uncovers a path to defeating The High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes.I think with all of the delays this films has faced I’m just the most ready I’ve ever been for a new John Wick movie. The action and visuals have always been outstanding and I truly think it has the potential to go down as Keanu Reeves signature role. I’m always ready for a reliably entertaining and engaging action movie and that’s what the John Wick movies have always provided so far.
