Movies I've seen in 2023 (+mini reviews!)
Collection of all the films that have been watched by me in 2023. In summary, I think 2023 was one of my craziest years for movies, with a mix of classic favorites and exciting new releases. I enjoyed watching a variety of genres, from romantic comedies to action-packed blockbusters. Some notable standouts for me were "The Whale" for its emotional impact, "Everything Everywhere All at Once" for its originality, and "The Flash" for its fantastic characters and story.

- DirectorWes BallStarsDylan O'BrienKaya ScodelarioWill PoulterThomas is deposited in a community of boys after his memory is erased, soon learning they're all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow "runners" for a shot at escape.6/10 - I watched this film at a New Year's Eve party with friends and had a great time. The action-packed plot and intense special effects made it an enjoyable experience. A classic YA dystopian.
- DirectorMary HarronStarsChristian BaleJustin TherouxJosh LucasA wealthy New York City investment banking executive, Patrick Bateman, hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies.7/10 (Rewatched) - Twisted psychological thriller with a darkly humorous edge. After watching it for a second time, I still found it as suspenseful and unique as I did the first time. The performances by Bale and Dafoe are top-notch and the film's stylish visuals and soundtrack make it a classic.
- DirectorMarius VaysbergStarsVera BrezhnevaVolodymyr ZelenskyyVladimir EpifantsevOne sunny day, Nikita, who owns a successful veterinary clinic, learns that he is terminally ill. Unaware that this is merely a medical mistake, he serious ponders: who will take care of his beautiful wife, children, and business? The sad thought occurs that it's time to look for his replacement. So after a rigorous selection process, he chooses Ilya, a reliable man with no bad habits, and begins a cover operation code-named "swap." And when Nikita learns that his health is not in danger, it's too late--his chosen replacement loves everyone, including veterinary patients, and everyone loves him. The struggle for life and love is just beginning.3/10 (Rewatched) - Definitely the weirdest and least magical out of the three-movie franchise (in fact, it does not really feel like the same franchise)—but also the funniest and most entertaining for me.
- DirectorMarius VaysbergStarsSabina AkhmedovaOksana AkinshinaNadezhda AzorkinaVera and Nikita have been married for three years. In midst of another joyful quarrel they exchange views on what a "normal man" and "a good wife" should be.4/10 - Glad I saw this one before seeing the first one. Had a lot more form, and better characters and a refreshing twist on romantic comedy tropes. BUT the setup here is shorter than in today's superhero movies, what the Hell.
- DirectorDavid DodsonSasha MalarevskyAlexander YurchikovStarsOksana AkinshinaVolodymyr ZelenskyyDenis NikiforovVera is a TV star, Nikita is a veterinarian. One morning, after a fun-filled evening, Vera wakes up in bed with Nikita. They decide it's a party consequence and leave in different directions. The next day, everything repeats.6/10 - This one is just the perfect combination cliché tropes, lighthearted romance, and the current president of Ukraine. I think I found something special here!
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsBrendan FraserSadie SinkTy SimpkinsA reclusive, morbidly obese English teacher attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter.8/10 - The last 30 minutes I had tears and snot pouring down my face like waterfalls! Such a powerful and emotionally charged film that left me with a heavy heart.
- DirectorDaniel KwanDaniel ScheinertStarsMichelle YeohStephanie HsuJamie Lee CurtisA middle-aged Chinese immigrant is swept up into an insane adventure in which she alone can save existence by exploring other universes and connecting with the lives she could have led.8/10 - This has to be the most original and exciting genre film in years. So much to unpack and yet it all works and the movie is also really fun to watch.
- DirectorJames FrancoStarsJames FrancoDave FrancoAri GraynorWhen aspiring actor Greg Sestero meets the weird and mysterious Tommy Wiseau in an acting class, they form a unique friendship and travel to Hollywood to make their dreams come true.7/10 (Rewatched) - As impressed as the first time. James Franco is at the top of his game in portraying the enigmatic Tommy Wiseau and his pursuit of the American dream. A must-see for any movie buff!
- DirectorJohn MaddenStarsGwyneth PaltrowJoseph FiennesGeoffrey RushThe world's greatest ever playwright, William Shakespeare, is young, out of ideas and short of cash, but meets his ideal woman and is inspired to write one of his most famous plays.7/10 - Charming romantic comedy which offers witty humour with modern touches and a beautiful period setting, making it a perfect choice for high school English classes (watched it with my teacher and some classmates so can relate).
- DirectorDennis DuganStarsAdam SandlerJennifer AnistonBrooklyn DeckerOn a weekend trip to Hawaii, a plastic surgeon convinces his loyal assistant to pose as his soon-to-be-divorced wife in order to cover up a careless lie he told to his much-younger girlfriend.6/10 - A movie of its class and right on time production. Adam sandler and Jennifer Aniston were great together!
- DirectorMorten TyldumStarsBenedict CumberbatchKeira KnightleyMatthew GoodeDuring World War II, the English mathematical genius Alan Turing tries to crack the German Enigma code with help from fellow mathematicians while attempting to come to terms with his troubled private life.8/10 - A brilliant (if not predictable script) biographical drama with strong performances from a great cast.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattChukwudi IwujiBradley CooperStill reeling from the loss of Gamora, Peter Quill rallies his team to defend the universe and one of their own - a mission that could mean the end of the Guardians if not successful.8/10 - A nice reminder that more than anything what makes the MCU so great is the characters and their relationships. Oh and the needle drops. By the way, it's so tearful, I'm not ashamed to say i cried at least 4 times.
- DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsEzra MillerMichael KeatonSasha CalleBarry Allen uses his super speed to change the past, but his attempt to save his family creates a world without super heroes, forcing him to race for his life in order to save the future.9/10 - Fantastic! What DC SHOULD be doing. Great action, characters, and heart. And Michael Keaton.
- DirectorGene StupnitskyStarsJennifer LawrenceAndrew Barth FeldmanLaura BenantiOn the brink of losing her home, Maddie finds an intriguing job listing: helicopter parents looking for someone to bring their introverted 19-year-old son out of his shell before college. She has one summer to make him a man or die trying.7/10 - Many lighthearted laughs, but this is one of those movies that goes deeper than just that. Andrew gives a lovely performance that’s by turns naive, earnest, sly and funny.
- DirectorJoaquim Dos SantosKemp PowersJustin K. ThompsonStarsShameik MooreHailee SteinfeldBrian Tyree HenryMiles Morales catapults across the multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. When the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles must redefine what it means to be a hero.9/10 - This feels more like an event than just a movie. It’s wild, it’s colorful, it’s trippy, but never to the point where it’s exhausting or overwhelming.
- DirectorRupert WyattStarsJames FrancoAndy SerkisFreida PintoA substance designed to help the brain repair itself gives advanced intelligence to a chimpanzee who leads an ape uprising.7/10 - Ok, look, i get it, the effects are really good. But that shouldn’t excuse a rushed storytelling AND lazy character development. Regardless, I'll keep watching this trilogy.
- CreatorJames GunnStarsJohn CenaDanielle BrooksFreddie StromaPicking up where The Suicide Squad (2021) left off, Peacemaker returns home after recovering from his encounter with Bloodsport - only to discover that his freedom comes at a price.10/10 - I really wanna add it in this list as a honorable mention. This show is a gateway to an entertaining adventure, with one of the most entertaining versions of The Suicide Squad adaptation. I enjoyed the simplistic writing, the absurd humour and engaging performances! Cena is the goat.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsBen AffleckHenry CavillAmy AdamsBatman is manipulated by Lex Luthor to fear Superman. Superman´s existence is meanwhile dividing the world and he is framed for murder during an international crisis. The heroes clash and force the neutral Wonder Woman to reemerge.8/10 - After 7 years finally watched it. Very overlooked and misunderstood! Visuals, soundtrack and the action are fantastic. While this is not a Classic, it’s still so much better than most give it credit for.
- DirectorGreta GerwigStarsMargot RobbieRyan GoslingIssa RaeBarbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.8.5/10 - This movie packs a punch, and goes from innocent fun to psychological self-realization in the span of two hours. It made me think twice about the depth of Barbie's influence.
- DirectorFlore VasseurStarsGreta ThunbergXiuhtezcatl MartinezMary FinnMelati Wijsen travels the world to meet young activists who have already helped the world with their perseverance and selflessness.7/10 - This documentary was really inspiring but flattened a lot of aspects, which meant it kind of failed to approrpiately unpack the complexity of youth activism. There's some really great stories here, but it could have been a lot better if it had dug a bit deeper.
- DirectorRichard CurtisStarsHugh GrantMartine McCutcheonLiam NeesonFollows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.7/10 - Watched this with my theatre group and it was kinda fun but it was hard to keep track of everyone. At the end I started tearing up tho, god damn romantic comedy tears.
- DirectorBenjamin RennerGuylo HomsyStarsKumail NanjianiTresi GazalElizabeth BanksA family of ducks try to convince their overprotective father to go on the vacation of a lifetime.8.5/10 - Genuinely surprised by how well this worked. It’s super fast paced, but that works for this story. The animations look great, especially in the flight sequences. It’s also consistently very funny and definitely one of Illumination’s best movies.
- DirectorJames WanStarsJason MomoaPatrick WilsonYahya Abdul-Mateen IIBlack Manta seeks revenge on Aquaman for his father's death. Wielding the Black Trident's power, he becomes a formidable foe. To defend Atlantis, Aquaman forges an alliance with his imprisoned brother. They must protect the kingdom.8/10 - My final movie of the year. A fun, visually stunning, stupid, extra, and overly dramatic superhero movie with amazing action, found family love & empowerment. The brotherhood and family stuff Momoa has talked about in press makes sense here. It isn't perfect but it kept my attention as well and is one of the DCEU movies I think I'd rewatch.
