- StarsFraunie FraunholzClaire WhitneyJames O'NeillSlowly and painfully a long line of suffering political prisoners were being brutally driven through the blinding snow to the barren wastes of Siberia, where they were destined to spend the balance of their lives in toil and sorrow. At the rear of the line patiently trudged a feeble old man, who in spite of his advanced years had brought the cruel vengeance of Russia down upon his head by daring to speak his mind in the interests of freedom. In the distance could be seen a small sleigh driven by an aged woman at whose side sat a strikingly beautiful girl. They were the wife and daughter of the exile, who were sharing his sad lot. In the camp of the prisoners they were allowed to live in a small hut, where they tried in vain to make the father comfortable, and soon realized that unless he could be taken back to civilization he would surely die. They sawed a hole in the floor of their hut and placed a trunk with a movable bottom over it. Then placing the old man beneath the floor they put some of his clothes and a note telling of his suicide on the riverbank and waited. For weeks they fed and cared for him secretly while the officials thought him dead. Finally they were given passports and told to return to Russia. The trunk was searched and found to contain clothes, but it was no sooner locked than the exile dropped the clothes into the cellar, and taking their place, was safely on his way across the border. In Russia, General Romanoff had ordered a massacre and his son had been stripped of his uniform for refusing to carry out the general's orders to slay the innocent. Sadly he left his father's house resolved never to return. On the road he met the exile, whose sleigh had been overturned and while helping him, fell under the spell of the large serious eyes of his beautiful daughter. Together they joined a revolutionary society, and when lots were drawn to destroy General Romanoff, the girl found herself called upon to do the dangerous work. Not knowing that the general was the father of her gallant lover, and embittered by her own father's death she consented. A bronze statue was presented to the general, who received it as a token of appreciation of his work, little dreaming that it contained the girl who was bent upon his destruction. But her lover had decided to save his father and the girl at all costs, and the deed was prevented at the very last moment with the general still innocent of his near approach to death. Mourning his son, the general wrote him a letter of forgiveness, but tore it to bits when he learned of his application to the revolutionists. Likewise the son wrote his father begging forgiveness, but destroyed the letter when the general ordered a new massacre. A terrific battle was fought in the streets, the father leading his troops in person against the forces of his sun. In the thick of the fight the general, seriously wounded, experienced a strange realization of the equality of man as he gave his last drink of water to a common revolutionary soldier and clasped his hand in brotherly love ere his soul had fled. So the general's son and the exile's daughter found the two old soldiers peacefully sleeping in each other's arms and their grief was tempered by the mute evidence of the general's change of heart as they smiled tenderly through their tears.

Morgan promises to carry out her wish. She dies. For five years, Morgan finds consolation in faithful devotion to the welfare of his daughter and her family. One day he takes them to Atlantic City for a rest. There, induced by June, Morgan visits Maxine, a clairvoyant, who predicts tor him a second marriage to a young woman "who will make his life an earthly paradise." Morgan succumbs to the clairvoyant's wiles, and the next day June finds her father in Maxine's company. Meanwhile, June's husband meets with an accident in New York and June returns to him; Morgan stays in Atlantic City, stating that he has an important "business engagement"--and marries Maxine. Two days later, he brings his wife home. June gives her a cool reception, and as time passes the women become bitter enemies. Later, Maxine persuades Morgan to give her the necklace bequeathed to June's daughter; when June sees it around Maxine's neck, her anger knows no bounds. Morgan, entering the scene, heeds his wife's reproaches, and in frenzied rage orders June and her husband and daughter from his home. When the governess 30 years in Morgan's service rebukes him for his heartless conduct and warns him that "he is living in a fool's paradise," she too is ordered from the house. June, now living in a cheap boardinghouse with her family in poverty, is about to have another baby. Terrified at the thought of further responsibilities and the bitter recollection that the venom of Maxine's malice has transformed her kind father into a brute who forced this misery on her. Morgan informed by John of their poverty and June's desperate notion, resolves to come to their aid, but, here too Maxine comes forward unexpectedly, orders John from the house, and tells Morgan "she doesn't want his pauper relatives around." One evening, Rufus Stone, Maxine's lawyer and friend takes her to a performance of "Faust." Morgan remains at home. In their absences, he compares "Faust's" with his own life. His infatuation turns to hatred, he tells Rufus, "You love my wife? Take her." He tears the necklace from Maxine's neck and orders the pair from his home. Mike's speech provokes a highly successful response, and to celebrate, Mike's wife Ann prepares a special dinner for their friends, Steve and Kitty Parker and Joe and Helen Barton. After dinner, the couples recall the events leading to their arrival in Elmdale twenty years before: Mike is the proprietor of a popular speakeasy, at which Ann is the featured singer. Steve and Joe are Mike's "muscle," while Helen is Ann's accompanist and Kitty is a cigarette girl. Mike is engaged in a power struggle with Al Malone, a racketeer who wants to take over the speakeasy. Mike repulses Malone's warlike tactics, but Ann, fearful for Mike's safety and desirous of a quiet life together, warns him that she will leave him if he does not get out of the business. Realizing that Ann is the most important thing in his life, Mike decides to go straight and gives the speakeasy to Pete, one of his men. Steve and Joe also decide to settle down with Kitty and Helen, and the three couples move to Elmdale, where they live prosperous, contented lives. Their reminiscences over, the friends part for the evening, and later, Reverend Hamilton visits Mike. The reverend asks Mike if he can help solve the problem of Mr. Hugo, who runs a casino just outside the city limits. Mike agrees to help, and as he is mulling over the situation, Joe, who is a grocer, and Steve, who is a barber, are confronted by Hugo's thugs. Unknown to the reverend, Hugo also runs a protection racket and has been shaking down the town's merchants. The matter becomes more complicated when Jerry, Joe and Helen's grown son, is beaten up by Hugo's thugs for nonpayment of his gambling debts. Mike's son Bill tries to help his pal Jerry and is also roughed up. When Bill confesses the source of his bruises to Mike, Mike gathers up Joe and Steve and visits Hugo's casino, where he offers to buy the casino for a handsome profit if Hugo will leave Elmdale. Hugo laughs and has the three men thrown out, after which they grimly begin to exercise and get themselves back in shape so that they can fight the gangsters on their terms. Ann, Helen and Kitty become suspicious of their husband's unusual activities and quickly learn the truth of their involvement with Hugo. Much to the men's surprise, however, their wives encourage them to protect the children and rid the town of Hugo. Finally in shape, Mike, Steve and Joe return to Hugo's casino and make short work of their opponents. During the fracas, however, Pete, who is now working with Hugo, appears and tells Hugo the secret of Mike's past. Hugo then reveals all to the reverend when he arrives, but Hamilton eases Mike's fears by telling him that the people of Elmdale have always known about his past but respected him for having the strength to change. With Hugo gone, the couples settle back into their happy lives.
- DirectorGeorge L. SargentStarsThomas A. WiseChester BarnettEvelyn BrentWilliam H. Langdon has been elected senator from Mississippi, and reaches the national capital with the experience in big politics that might be expected of a man who has lived his life on a plantation forty miles from a railroad. With him are his two fair daughters, Carolina and Hope. He has scarcely reached his hotel when he hires "Bud" Haines, a newspaper man, as his secretary. Charles Norton, representative from Mississippi, James Stevens, senior Senator, and Horatio Peabody, senator from Pennsylvania, are interested in a scheme to have a naval station located at Altacola, Miss., and they need the assistance of the new senator. They have purchased all the land in the neighborhood and plan to dispose of it to the government at their own price after the bill is put through. In order to insure his support Norton induces Langdon's son to invest $30,000 in Altacola and also puts in the fortune left the Senator's daughter by her mother. He is the girl's accepted suitor, by the way. Haines, in the meantime, has been a thorn in the side of the crooks, but by reporting to each that the other has played false and invested money in the land project, they bring about an estrangement between him and Langdon, which is set right by Hope Langdon telling Haines, with whom she is in love, of the plot. Langdon and Haines find they have been duped and the man from Mississippi decides to balk the thieves, even if it ruins his family. The story comes to a right ending by Langdon stepping into the Senate to make his maiden speech, denouncing the intended fraud, and declaring that he and the conspirators bought up the land to save the national treasury from being looted after having discovered a conspiracy in another quarter to commit the holdup. Before this important event he has compelled the two rascally senators to come to his way of thinking through fear of exposure. Congressman Norton is sent on his way in disgrace. Haines, again secretary, is engaged to wed Hope.

- DirectorGeorge TempletonStarsSandy DescherDouglas FowleyVan Dyke ParksThis movie is about one summer holiday in the life of the famous children's book character Heidi, the orphan girl who lives with her grandfather (whom Heidi, like everybody else including the cast list, calls "Alm Uncle") on the outskirts of a small village in the Alps. Heidi has a gift of three carved wooden figures made by a craftsman neighbour: Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar. However, rather than gold, frankincense, and myrrh, her grandfather and the village doctor gradually teach Heidi the idea that the gifts they bring are faith, charity and hope. Adventures include Heidi entering her friend Peter for a singing competition without telling him; befriending a rich but lonely man from the big city who is an associate of the father of Heidi's little girl friend who comes to stay for the holidays; and joining Peter on an expedition up the highest mountain in the neighbourhood, in a bid to rescue a soldier and his bride who on their honeymoon decide (against the advice of the children and Alm Uncle that it is dangerous at this time of year) to climb the peak, only to be trapped by an avalanche below them, after the bride injures her ankle. The solution: call in the U.S. army -- hence all the military bit parts in the cast list.

The money that Elnora has saved for her college education is stolen, and when Mrs. Comstock goes to retrieve it from a suspect, she also learns of the duplicity of her husband, who had been courting a neighboring woman on the night he drowned. She begs forgiveness of Elnora, and the romance of Elnora and Phillip also begins to flourish.
- DirectorJames Leo MeehanStarsGloria GreyEmily FitzroyArthur CurrierHardhearted Kate Comstock has always resented her daughter Elnora because her husband Robert died in the quicksands of the Limberlost swamp when Elnora was born. Longing for her mother's love, beautiful Elnora is easily loved by everyone else, including neighbors Wesley and Margaret Sinton and the "Bird-Woman" of the swamp, who helps Elnora raise money by teaching her to capture moths and butterflies for sale. Elnora does well in high school, too, and when Philip Amon comes to the neighborhood to recover his health, they fall in love with each other. Unfortunately, Philip is engaged to Edith Carr, a high-spirited but jealous beauty. Elnora seeks to avoid conflict with Edith by staying with Freckles and his wife, who also live in the Limberlost, but when Elnora helps nurse Philip back to health, Edith leaves them free to marry. When Mrs. Comstock learns that her husband had been unfaithful to her with neighbor Elvira Carney, she finally discovers in herself a love for her daughter, and extends her affections enough to adopt the orphaned boy Billy and his dog.
