Horror Channel FrightFest takes place in London this weekend. Here's our pick of films to look out for...
Summer’s almost over and what better way to welcome in the spooky season than by hiding from the heat in a darkened room, with five days of wall-to-wall horror? Yep, it’s August Bank Holiday and that means the 18th annual London Horror Channel FrightFest is upon us. For some, this is a familiar pilgrimage. Veterans will be used to bloodshot eyes, numbness in the spine, a lack of nutrition and an acute anxiousness every time there’s a loud noise. For others, it may be their first visit and these are things to look forward to. Either way, FrightFest promises probably the biggest, purest, uncut dose of horror you can endure without going insane, complete with special guests, world premieres, live events and at least a couple of parties.

A funny, fresh detective comedy is tough to do in any language. Many shows have tried to infuse the sordid world of cheap private investigators with some offbeat humor, but “Swedish Dicks,” the latest attempt, co-created and starring Peter Stormare, bases its story in L.A. with an international and bilingual twist.
Stormare plays Ingmar, a broke ex-Hollywood stuntman who opens up an unusually affordable detective agency. Working out of a nondescript downtown L.A. office, one particular job brings fellow Swedish ex-pat Axel (Johan Glans) into his professional orbit. After the two narrowly escape the clutches of a particularly twisty gig, they go into business together. Operating under an agency with the same name as the show’s title, these two Swedes handle their client’s unconventional requests wherever in the city they might lead.

Ardent John Wick fans will remember the moment in which Keanu Reeves and Peter Stormare shared the screen in Chapter 2, when the latter plays Viggo’s snarling brother Abram Tarasov. But the pair’s history stretches back further still to Swedish Dicks, Private Investigators, the single-camera comedy series in which Reeves features in his first major TV role.
Having premiered via Viaplay first, we now have confirmation that Pop TV has swooped in to acquire the property as part of its robust slate of new original programming. Also starring comedian Johan Glans as an aging ex-stuntman, Swedish Dicks, as the name suggests, chronicles the story behind an L.A.-based private detective firm. Stormare dreamed up the idea back in 2014, and two years later the show had developed enough of a cult following to warrant a second season, with Keanu Reeves on board in a recurring capacity.
Here’s the overview,...

When David Simon, the mastermind behind HBO’s The Wire and Treme, was told by a former location manager that he really needed to meet with a guy who had once worked in the mob-controlled adult film industry in New York’s Times Square in the 1970s he thought, “I’m married with kids and lawn furniture. Basic cinematography and a generally simple visual approach can be called weaknesses as can a lack of savagery and gore but those arent large enough deterrents to bypass a recommendation. Devil May Call is an indie flick with a pulse. There are fiscal limitations at work and as already noted there isnt too much to draw audiences in with regard to star power but Manes inclusion should stir the curiosity of hardcores and the appearance from Traci Lords should spark nostalgia of one sort or another (most of you know what I mean).

The work of a first time director can be promising or dreadfully misguided. Sometimes, a director’s first film represents a good start to a promising career and other times, we are left scratching our heads and wondering how he or she will ever work again? Every once in a while, though, a first time director blows us out of the water with something totally original, bold, and completely brilliant.
It’s not very often that we are blown away as horror fans. We are a group that has seen everything the first time around and then seen it again when it was remade, so for us to be blown away, especially by a director making his or her feature film debut is exceptional and even a bit unusual. That’s not to say that it doesn’t ever happen, though. In fact, we have found ourselves completely blown away...

More casting news has come in for Mane Entertainment's upcoming film, Penance Lane... the infamous Traci Lords has joined the ever growing cast and even recorded a video message to celebrate. No, not that kind of video. That was a long time ago.

McDonnell (Hatchet III) will direct the script written by Munier Sharrieff (Battle Chasers, Battle of the Planets). Tyler Mane (Halloween, X-Men, Troy), Renae Geerlings (Halloween II, Compound Fracture), and Justin Beahm will produce. The cast includes Mane, Muse Watson, Leslie Easterbrook, and Dan Roebuck.

Slim Pickens was an actor known for One Eyed Jacks, Blazing Saddles and of course Dr Strangelove. What you get this week is not Pickens the actor iconically riding the bomb down to the ground in the Stanley Kubrick classic or any kind of online retrospective of his work, but slim pickings in terms of new streaming choices. So it’s Netflix’s time to shine….
Netflix has added more or less all of the low-key interesting independent films from last year with real gems like Safety Not Guaranteed and Maniac and even the lesser likes of Excision and Some Guy Who Kills People. It’s entirely possible that Lovefilm/Amazon is behind closed doors after last week’s Marvel/Netflix news, plotting something with DC comics but we will see…

The film-maker talks about hitchhiking, his one-man show in Liverpool – and what his parents thought of Pink Flamingos
William Burroughs called the film director John Waters "the pope of trash". Waters, 67, was born, raised and still lives in Baltimore, Maryland where his close friend Divine, whom he made a star, also grew up. Waters's best-known movies include Pink Flamingos (in which Divine ate dog faeces), Polyester, Hairspray, Cry-Baby and Serial Mom. He is also a writer, artist and art collector and will perform his one-man show, This Filthy World – about film, his fascination with true crime, exploitation films and "fashion lunacy" – at this year's Homotopia arts festival in Liverpool. Waters is writing a book about hitchhiking across America last year.
How was the road trip?
I hitchhiked from my front door in Baltimore to my flat in San Francisco. I last hitchhiked when I was 16. It's a bit different when you're 66. Before,...

I hear a lot of casual horror fans talking about the lack of quality horror films in recent years... and to some extent they have a point. Studio-funded horror films seem to be less prevalent than they were three decades ago, and many mass-marketed horror films are lighter on gore, nudity, and the like than the features of yesteryear (with the obvious exception of the Evil Dead reboot). But there are still plenty of quality horror films being made – it’s just incumbent upon horror fans to look a little harder. There are a plethora of well-made horror pictures being released every year; they just aren’t all getting the mainstream attention that they deserve. In an attempt to remedy that, and shine the spotlight on some outstanding films that haven’t received a great deal of publicity, we are showcasing five titles from the past five years that may have passed you by,...

They don't make funny movies any more, right? Wrong. If you're looking for a laugh, then here are some you may have missed...
For this list, blame The Hangover Part III. It was whilst walking out of that film that I got into a chat with someone, who was bemoaning the lack of genuinely funny movie comedies. Certainly, big budget Hollywood comedies have no end of problems right now - with the occasional exception - but I couldn't help thinking of the many neglected gems that had gone through my DVD player over the past decade or so.
As such, I started to put this list together. It's inevitably subjective, as one person's comedy is another person's snore fest. But I've tried to dig out a mix of comedies from the past three decades that have either flown under the radar completely, or...

Johnny Depp, whose film career began with John Waters' 1990 Cry-Baby, was a surprise guest at the 9th Annual Johnny Ramone Tribute on Sunday at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, where the film was screened on the mausoleum. Depp joined a Q&A moderated by Sex Pistol Steve Jones and also featuring Waters and costars Traci Lords, Ricki Lake, Joe Dallesandro (of Andy Warhol film fame) and James Intveld (Depp's singing voice in the film and, according to Waters, "the real Hollywood crybaby"). Cry-Baby, a '50s satire, set Depp free by satirizing his then-imprisoning image as a TV heartthrob. Photos:

★★★★★ Nowhere (1997) follows Totally F***ed Up (1993) and The Doom Generation (1995) as the third and final instalment in renegade filmmaker Gregg Araki's Teenage Apocalypse trilogy. Jam-packed full of rampant, libidinous teens that exist in a multicultural, pop art, dystopian fantasy, watching Nowhere is what might happen were you to read Naked Lunch before bed. Araki's muse James Duval is at the centre of the action, his character Dark Smith the embodiment of the apocalypse. He edits tapes in an attempt to control his life, whilst his bisexual girlfriend, Mel (Rachel True), simply can't commit to him.
This lack of commitment sees Dark's mind become a mass of bubbling confusion, especially after meeting Montgomery (Nathan Bexton). The theme of alienation follows Dark like a heavy cloud, eventually taking on literal form in a scene involving a ghastly explosion that would make undoubtedly have made Franz Kafka proud. It's that time of year again when we take a moment to honor our moms. And how great they are, right? Well, here at Dread Central we can turn even the most loving moms into something horrific, and in celebration of Mother's Day, we bring you Horror's 11 Most Memorable Moms!
Read on… and eat your vegetables for chrissake!
Okay, so not all the moms on this list are psychotic killers; some are heroes, and some fall somewhere in between. But they're all great for their own reasons. As usual, we'll start out with some honorable mentions, and we certainly have some remarkable moms to speak about. We'll start with Estelle Collingwood (played by Cynthia Carr) in the original Last House on the Left. Only a mother's love could drive a person to bite a guy's Johnson off as an act of revenge! Another great justice-seeking mother was Kate (played by Vera Farmiga) in Orphan.
