Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
Ten weeks deep and “Palm Royale” showrunner Abe Sylvia is still processing the success of his shimmering spring TV hit.
“I certainly live in an echo chamber on social media, so I’m seeing lots of ways in which it infiltrated culture,” the executive producer told IndieWire. “But I felt like we really crossed over when I saw that Ramona Singer from ‘Real Housewives’ was dressed for a ‘Palm Royale’-themed cocktail party. That’s when I went, ‘Uh-oh, something has changed here. Something has shifted.'”

The podcast world has taken off in a way that no one thought. Our favorite stars of stage and screen are able to sit down and have candid discussions without flash and utilize their time for lengthy interviews. Enter Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson. According to Deadline, the duo, who were part of an ensemble cast on the Emmy-winning NBC hit comedy Cheers, will be reuniting to catch up with each other and friends for a podcast series called Where Everybody Knows Your Name. The apt title comes from the iconic theme song of the sitcom. The actors who portrayed Sam Malone and Woody Boyd will be premiering the podcast on SiriusXM on June 12.
The show doesn’t explicitly set out to be a Cheers retrospective, but there should no doubt be some reminiscing as the series is about Danson and Harrelson reuniting after years of different career paths and...

Dern takes on the role of Dr. Melinda Rogers, the Monsanto Company’s chief toxicologist, who testifies with certainty that Roundup is safe.

Glen Powell is a worker. He’s currently on an early 2000s Colin Ferrell/Samuel L. Jackson/Morgan Freeman run where he’s seemingly in everything. The breakout star of Top Gun: Maverick, who has two movies coming out this summer — Hit Man and Twisters — was also recently reported to join Margaret Qualley and Ed Harris in the thriller Huntington for writer/director John Patton Ford. Plus, he has stated that he and his Anyone But You co-star Sydney Sweeney are currently looking for more projects to star in after they capitalized on their on-set romance speculation.
The Hollywood Reporter is now confirming that Powell is in talks to star in the next movie from sci-fi blockbuster director J.J. Abrams. According to THR, no deal has yet to be made and there is no word on what the plot will be. However, it is also reported that this film will...

Glen Powell has been officially announced as the lead in Monsanto, a legal drama whilst also being linked to an upcoming JJ Abrams project.
Glen Powell seems to be at the top of every casting director’s wish list when it comes to constructing a film ensemble. As it stands, we’re not even halfway through May and we’ve already learned that Powell will be starring in Huntington, an A24 revenge thriller with Margaret Qualley. That’s on top of the announcement last month that he would be starring in Edgar Wright’s planned adaptation of The Running Man.
Two announcements in the space of a month seemingly isn’t enough for Powell, though. Now two announcements in a day? That’s more like it.
The first project is confirmed as happening. It’s called Monsanto and is a legal drama that will co-star Laura Dern and Anthony Mackie.

After producing the upcoming documentary “The Blue Angels,” J.J. Abrams and Glen Powell are in early talks to team up for a new movie, with Abrams eyeing Powell to star in his next directorial effort.
Deals have yet to close, but in the aftermath of “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Anyone but You,” no one’s career has been hotter than Powell’s, who continues to garner interest from big-name filmmakers and studios.
There’s no telling when this project would fit into Powell’s jam-packed production schedule. He’ll next be seen starring in Netflix’s “Hit Man,” which he also co-wrote with director Richard Linklater, but he’s also set to star in Edgar Wright’s “The Running Man” reboot for Paramount. That news was revealed at CinemaCon, where the actor also promoted Universal’s “Twisters” as a prospective summer blockbuster. Also in the works is “Chad Powers,” a...

Apple Studios is facing a lawsuit accusing it of violating a series of California labor laws on the set of Palm Royale.
Daniel Ferguson, in a proposed class action filed on May 3 in Los Angeles Superior Court, claims the studio stiffed him and other background actors on pay, “maintained a policy and practice of not paying” them for all of the hours they worked and refused to provide legally-mandated meal breaks.
According to the complaint, Ferguson worked for Apple Studios, which didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment, in Los Angeles for four months in 2022 during the production of Palm Royale. The satire, starring Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern and Ricky Martin, centers on a former pageant queen who tries to break into the upper echelons of high society in late 1960s Florida.

Updated with entertainment comments: Apple CEO Tim Cook gave a shoutout to upcoming Wolfs set for theatrical release this fall, Sony distributing. Comedy series Palm Royale with Kristen Wiig and Laura Dern, and Colin Farrell-starring detective skein Sugar also got a plug. Apple’s entertainment business, Apple Studios and Apple TV+ are buried in the Services division but it’s the only one Cook routinely comments on during Apple’s post-earnings conference calls, like today’s.
He keeps a running tally each quarter of Apple TV+ award nominations and wins (480) for Apple TV+ productions since the service launched. “We have some incredible theatrical releases coming this year, including Wolfs, which reunites George Clooney and Brad Pitt,” he said.
Services grew 14% in the current June quarter and CFO Luca Maestri see a similar bump in the current June quarter.

Palm Royale with its meticulously matched period décor and costuming is a true immersion in late 1960s Palm Beach culture. But while watching the Apple TV+ series, one can’t help but see the connections between the topics that were emerging as national concerns then and the biggest social issues now.
“It’s so cool to think about how far we’ve come as women and that we have so many options today, but 1969 isn’t that long ago,” says Leslie Bibb, who stars in the Kristen Wiig-starring comedy as Dinah, a woman desperate to maintain her wealthy status after marrying for money rather than love. “It’s not that far back that women’s rights weren’t an issue.”

A well-meaning yet generic environmental activism documentary with sporadic insights, “Common Ground” opens with a series of stars including Laura Dern, Jason Momoa, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson and Rosario Dawson as they write apologetic letters to future generations. Their words claim to reveal harsh truths that boil down to, “We have failed you” and “We should have done better.” This parade of famous voices is a curiously trite start for a film driven by facts and stats for the most part. It’s as if co-directors Joshua and Rebecca Harrell Tickell (“Kiss The Ground”) seek instant credibility through empty-calorie celebrity activism, when they should just let the experts speak about the film’s main focus: ethical regenerative farming. And once they do, “Common Ground” proves it has some meaty arguments to offer, despite feeling like a sunny infomercial on occasion.
The most fundamental of those arguments goes like this: In...

Life is finding a way to fill the cast of the new Jurassic World sequel from the original Jurassic Park co-writer David Koepp. The new film has been courting actors like Scarlett Johansson, and recently, it is being rumored that Dev Patel and Colman Domingo are being sought out for roles. It’s a new era for dinosaurs. With Scarlett Johansson now in talks to star in the new Jurassic World movie, scooper Daniel Richtman has added a couple more casting rumours to the fire. According to Richtman, Colman Domingo (Euphoria) and Dev Patel (Monkey Man) are being eyed to star in the Jurassic World relaunch.
There’s no information on who Dev Patel might play in the Jurassic World movie, but Richtman added that Colman Domingo is being eyed to play the villain. Take all this with a grain of salt for now, but Patel and Domingo would make for excellent additions to the cast.

The Jurassic Park films, especially the first, are one of Steven Spielberg’s most acclaimed feats that pushed the boundaries with what one could do with visual effects. The director managed to bring dinosaurs to life in such a lively and entertaining way and the effects still stand up to this day. The franchise spawned a new trilogy in the 2010s with the Jurassic World trilogy.

Colin Trevorrow directed the first Jurassic World film and Jurassic World: Dominion. The director managed to get the core trio of the Jurassic Park film including Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern for the latter film. Palm Royale’s Kristen Wiig, Josh Lucas, director Tate Taylor and writer and showrunner Abe Sylvia joined Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday to talk about the likability of the characters, some of the tough topics they’ve tackled and how the Palm Beach setting helped amplify the comedy of the show.
In its first season on Apple TV+, Kristen Wiig’s character, Maxine Simmons, is an ambitious woman who schemes to secure her seat at America’s most exclusive table: Palm Beach high society circa 1969. Along the way, Wiig’s character meets a number of personalities who play some part in this socialite town with an ensemble that includes Ricky Martin, Allison Janney, Laura Dern, Leslie Bibb, Josh Lucas and Carol Burnett.

Splashy and flashy (but not really trashy), Palm Royale on Apple TV+ fits easily into the ranks of high-gloss, high-concept, female-driven dramas that have enjoyed a Golden Age on premium streaming channels this past decade.
Recent series like Bad Sisters (also on Apple TV+) and Max's Big Little Lies drew a substantial audience with a combination of star-studded ensemble casts, heavy themes, and plots from best-selling domestic thrillers like those written by author Liane Moriarty.
Palm Royale ticks many of those boxes (it's based on the 2018 novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel), but instead of sexual violence and trauma, it brings big laughs and a soapy jewel-box mystery to the female-centric limited series tablescape.
Palm Royale's opening credit sequence immediately places the series in time and taste by evoking Valley of The Dolls and James Bond with its graphic animation.

In “Back to Black,” Jack O’Connell’s Blake Fielder-Civil comes into the life of Amy Winehouse — played by an exceptional Marisa Abela — with seductive bravado, sweeping the singer off her feet on their first meeting in a London pub thanks to, among other things, a lip-synced rendition of the Shangri-La’s “Leader of the Pack”.
As the divisive biopic, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and released in the U.K. by StudioCanal this Friday (and in the U.S. by Focus Features on May 17), agonizingly portrays, the smitten pair quickly descend into violent self-destruction — a “toxic co-dependency” as Fielder-Civil later describes it in the film — fueled by alcoholism and drug abuse.
Many may question the ethics of picking at a tragic story that was heavily chronicled and sensationalized by the media in real-time during Winehouse’s final years. But for anyone who’s been tracking O’Connell’s career, the opportunity to...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Palm Royale Season 2, Episode 6, “Maxine Takes a Step.”] Palm Royale‘s sixth episode made way for some landmark scenes onscreen as star Laura Dern, who plays Linda Shaw, shared the screen with her real-life father and famed actor Bruce Dern who portrays Linda’s dad, Skeet. Emma Stone became the lucky 13th two-time Best Actress Oscar champ with her recent win for “Poor Things.” And she could well be adding an Emmy to her awards collection for her leading role in Showtime’s idiosyncratic drama series “The Curse.”

Sure the series is rich in cringe comedy that is hard to tear your eyes from even if you watch through your fingers. But it is also intelligent, dark and surprisingly moving. Beyond the vast windows of Palm Beach’s iconic Breakers resort, the ocean sparkled as women in designer florals paraded under the lobby’s vaulted, hand-frescoed ceilings. They were headed to network with Martha Stewart and Tommy Hilfiger and swap Hermès and Gucci purses for charity at a $600-per-ticket “Old Bags” luncheon.
Later, many of them joined the daily flock gathered poolside at the historic Colony Hotel, sipping cocktails served by young men in pink shirts. Apart from the rose-hued hotel’s interior update, including a new Goop-designed bungalow, similar scenes could have unfolded a half-century earlier — which is why the new Apple TV+ show Palm Royale, set in 1969, doesn’t seem very dated. The characters played by Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern and Allison Janney could have easily mingled among this crowd, and when the show incorporated shots of The Breakers, the only thing they had to adjust for historical accuracy was the cars.

Brie Larson won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Room” in 2016. Since then she has worked primarily in major franchises — appearing in “Avengers: Endgame” and a handful of other MCU projects as Captain Marvel and in the “Fast and Furious” film series. The actress hasn’t really found a project to show the talent she displayed in her tour de force performance in “Room” until now.
She stars in “Lessons in Chemistry,” the Apple TV+ show based on the novel of the same name by Bonnie Garmus. It follows Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a lab tech and chemist who uses her new job hosting a 1960s TV cooking show to educate housewives on scientific topics. The result is an entertaining period story in which Larson utilizes her distinct energy and impressive range to full effect. Larson injects Elizabeth with intelligence and heart but also zip, determination, and frustration in a well-rounded performance.
