Tom Holland has given some of the best performances of his lifetime in star-studded projects like those from Marvel including the Avengers and the Spider-Man film series, and has even garnered a massive fan following. However, his latest project isn’t gaining the best of reviews from anyone, including not only critics but a considerable majority of his fandom as well.

The project that has been getting all this hate is his latest play Romeo and Juliet with Francesca Amewudah-Rivers, and one of the biggest reasons behind this backlash is only understandable: the glumness and lack of energy in the drama. However, even through such tough times, Holland has his biggest supporter and the love of his life still right by his side: Zendaya.

Romantic comedy used to be a thing of the past, but Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney managed to bring it back to the mainstream with Anyone But You. In this world where cinema has been saturated with superhero films and blockbuster franchises, a rom-com movie is perhaps people’s last option.

Laurence Olivier was an Oscar-winning thespian best remembered for his psychologically intense Shakespeare adaptations, both as an actor and a director. Yet his filmography extends well past the Bard’s work. Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1907 in Surrey, England, Olivier first came to prominence on the British stage. A series of acclaimed theatrical performances, most notably in Noel Coward‘s “Private Lives,” caught the attention of filmmakers both in the UK and the US.
He earned his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor for William Wyler‘s “Wuthering Heights” (1939), competing the very next year for Alfred Hitchcock‘s “Rebecca” (1940). Having firmly established himself as a formidable talent in front of the camera, he stepped behind it to great success with “Henry V”, the first of three films he would direct and star in based on the works of William Shakespeare.

This post contains spoilers for the latest episodes of "Doctor Who."
It turns out love really is all you need. Well, love and a Time Lord willing to fight off the spirit of music through a delightfully campy song battle that sees literal musical notes fill the air. The showdown between the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa), Ruby (Millie Gibson), and the chaotic being known as Maestro (Jinkx Monsoon) in the new season's second episode might be one of the goofiest things that's happened on "Doctor Who" recently -- and it's not even the most over-the-top part of the episode. "The Devil's Chord" takes some deliciously weird risks, the biggest of which is centering its drama on "characters" who aren't exactly historical figures yet: The Beatles.

The gaming community has been celebrating ever since players were able to make Sony take back a major change they planned to introduce to Helldivers 2. While the victory is indeed a significant achievement, it seems the situation might get out of control soon as players realize they have a concrete way of pressuring a studio into fulfilling certain demands.
Players managed to make Sony back-off in regards to Helldivers 2
It was a struggle of three days and felt no less than a tragic play by William Shakespeare before the studio finally announced on May 6th that it would be backtracking on its announcement which was posted earlier. The means of getting here can be considered equally brutal bearing in mind how the players have.

Barry Jenkins isn’t necessarily feeling the love from every social media commenter over his involvement in Mufasa: The Lion King after the Disney prequel released its first trailer this week.
After screening footage at CinemaCon earlier this month, the film’s trailer was released online Monday and features narration from Rafiki (John Kani) explaining that the movie offers the origin story for Mufasa, the lion patriarch featured in 1994’s animated The Lion King and Jon Favreau’s 2019 photorealistic remake of the same name.
Jenkins took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to share the trailer, and his post was greeted with both favorable responses and also some negative ones, with the criticism apparently stemming from backlash to Disney’s trend of reimagining its previous animation hits. One user wrote, “Barry, You’re too good and talented for this Iger’s soulless machine,” referring to Disney CEO Bob Iger.

Whether you love it or hate it—or just hate that you might, kinda, maybe be chill with it—Will Gluck’s Anyone But You has found its audience. The Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell two-hander defied critics and connected with plenty of folks happy to bake in the Australian sun as the film’s stars swam around Port Jackson Bay and debated what it means to be “hot girl fit.” In theaters, the movie over-performed and grossed more than $200 million worldwide, and now on Netflix it’s soared to the top of the movie viewing chart around the world.

It took only three days for Zack Snyder’s sequel for his 2023 Rebel Moon to get to Netflix’s top, but it also took three days for Sydney Sweeney’s Anyone But You to topple Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver from the same chart.

"Anyone But You" became a surprise hit when it arrived in theaters back in December 2023. In an age where everyone is used to superhero movies and the odd horror flick doing well at the box office, surely a rom-com starring two lesser-known stars whose careers are only just starting to get going wasn't going to hit? But hit, it did. "Anyone But You" passed box office milestones, making an impressive $216 million worldwide on just a $25 million budget. Oh, and it was also based on a William Shakespeare play.
It might seem strange to think that a loose adaptation of the Bard's "Much Ado About Nothing," could be so surprisingly popular, but perhaps "Anyone But You" is ushering in a new era of cool Shakespeare adaptations, á la Leonardo DiCaprio with "Romeo + Juliet" back in the mid-'90s. Kenneth Branagh has spent much of his career bringing to life the works of British writers William Shakespeare and Agatha Christie. Now he will not get a chance to play a different famed scribe. Branagh will voice star as Charles Dickens in The King of Kings, a faith-based feature inspired by the lives of both Dickens and Jesus Christ.
Uma Thurman will voice star as Catherine Dickens, the wife of the author, while Jojo Rabbit‘s Roman Griffin Davis will voice the couple’s youngest son, Walter.
The King of Kings is inspired by “The Life of Our Lord,” a Dickens short story published in 1934, decades after his death. It follows Dickens and Walter as they — and their cat Willa — become immersed in the story of Jesus.

Sydney Sweeney became a successful producer at a young age when she co-produced her smash hit rom-com Anyone But You. The actress proved her business savvy by crafting a highly specialized marketing campaign for the film. This unexpectedly included reportedly deliberately teasing the public regarding linkup rumors with co-star Glen Powell.
It was a bold strategy built upon months of rumors swirling around Sweeney and Powell. Social media was agog with speculations, even in the months following the release of the movie. Much digital ink was spilled dissecting the interactions between the stars during promos and in behind-the-scenes features. In the end the tactic paid off, and the marketing team behind the movie proved they knew what they were doing with the film’s publicity campaign.

Update: Following his interview with The Guardian, David Harewood clarified his remarks: “I don’t support or condone Blackface. My own documentary on the subject can be found on the BBC website. It is a grotesque distortion of race and should always be condemned.”
Previous: Homeland star David Harewood has said he is worried about the creep of identity politics in acting and argued that white performers should be able to “black up.”
In an interview with The Guardian to mark his appointment as president of British drama school Rada, Harewood made the case for controversial casting decisions on the proviso that performers deliver.
“We’re at this strange point in the profession where people go: ‘Oh, you can’t play that role because you’re not disabled, or you can’t play that because you’re not really from there.’ The name of the game is acting,” he said.

To celebrate "The Godfather" turning 50 in 2022, The Hollywood Reporter sat down with actors James Caan, Robert Duvall, Talia Shire, and John Martino, who reflected on the creation and enduring legacy of director Francis Ford Coppola's cinematic masterpiece. Shire expressed her admiration for Marlon Brando's "breathtaking" transformation into the formidable Don Corleone.
"When he came to the set the first time, he was this handsome male," she recalled, but he utilized various makeup and acting techniques to transform himself into a weathered and wise mafioso, making him almost unrecognizable. The use of dental prosthetics gave Brando protruding jowls that made him resemble a bulldog, somehow lending Don Corleone a more dignified power.
Shire said that Brando also employed another unique performance method called "active listening" during filming. "It's not always when you say your lines that you pay attention; it is the listening to all the others around you.

[Warning: The following story contains spoilers about Season 1 of “Fallout.”]
Aaron Moten was not exactly familiar with “Fallout,” the game, when “Fallout,” the TV show, came to him. “I think if I had seen a poster, if I had seen a photograph of the T-60 — the big power armor suit — I would’ve recognized it to be ‘Fallout,’ but yeah, totally new to me,” he tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “The world, the deep dive, if you will.”
The actor did a deep dive into gamers and Twitch streamers to prep for his audition, but after landing the part of Maximus, he made a conscious choice not to play the game. “My job as an actor always feels like bringing a human element to something. It has been known for a while that the new West End production of William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, will be returning to the Duke of York’s Theatre from May 11 through August 3, with Jamie Lloyd directing. But, more importantly for some fans, it has been confirmed that Spider-Man star Tom Holland will be playing Romeo in the play, with Bad Education star Francesca Amewudah-Rivers co-starring as Juliet. And while all of this seems fine and dandy to us, some people are dissatisfied with the fact that Juliet will be played by a black actress and have taken to the Internet to express their anger in the most deplorable way.
The young actress has, thus, been the target of significant racial slander and abuse recently, which is an act that has to be condemned immediately. The producers, as well as some of Rivers’ colleagues, were quick to react,...

Once upon a time, Netflix was in the business of auteur-driven animation, allowing filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro work on his dream project "Pinocchio," giving Henry Selick his first movie in 13 years after Disney killed his previous project, letting Charlie Kaufman deliver an existential kids' animated movie in "Orion and the Dark," and rescuing "Nimona" after Disney pulled the plug. The streamer has partnered with the likes of Glen Keane, Sergio Pablos, Richard Linklater, Chris Williams, Craig McCracken, and Jorge R. Gutiérrez, but a name that won't join this list anytime soon is legendary filmmaker David Lynch.
Speaking with Deadline, Lynch offered an update on his long-gestating animated movie "Snootworld," which he's been teasing since at least 2009. William Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet centuries ago but to this day, the play remains one of the most frequently performed and beloved plays of all time. And now, Tom Holland will soon be seen taking up the role of Romeo in the tragic love story in a new West End production directed by Jamie Lloyd. His Juliet will be played by Bad Education actress, Francesca Amewudah-Rivers.
Tom Holland in Uncharted (2022)
Unfortunately, fans of the entertainment industry are not always kind in their feedback and Francesca Amewudah-Rivers’ casting has proven this once again. The actress has been receiving buck loads of hate for playing Juliet in the upcoming play but thankfully, the producers have got her back as they release a strong statement supporting her and condemning the racist abusers.

Over the years, the Doctor has met all kinds of legendary cultural and societal figureheads across his Tardis travels: Vincent Van Gogh, Charles Dickens, Rosa Parks, William Shakespeare, and Agatha Christie, to name but a few. But he’s never met the Fab Four – until now. The new series of Doctor Who – the first full series to feature Ncuti Gatwa’s take on the iconic Time Lord, with showrunner Russell T Davies returning to the (galli)fray – will feature an episode titled 'The Devil's Chord', in which the Doctor rock out with The Beatles in Abbey Road. And it’s an idea that’s been a long time coming.
As Davies tells Empire – in a major new joint interview with Gatwa to celebrate the show’s latest regeneration – the notion of doing a Beatles episode has always hit a certain stumbling block. But, that in itself became a source of inspiration.

Tom Holland rose to international recognition with his portrayal of Peter Parker, a.k.a., Spider-Man, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with Captain America: Civil War. The audience’s perception of the actor has been solidified with his standalone movies, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home. There is no doubt that he is indeed one of the finest young actors in the entertainment industry currently.
The English actor has also been a part of movies, including Uncharted, The Devil All the Time, and Cherry. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Holland’s performance and dedication to the Apple TV+ miniseries The Crowded Room was appreciated by the fans. The actor is now looking forward to returning to stage, performing one of the most beloved characters of William Shakespeare, and giving Leonardo DiCaprio a tough competition for its title.

Nell Jackson is the latest historical TV creation by Sally Wainwright, the writer-director who brought “the first modern lesbian” Anne Lister to screen in HBO/BBC series Gentleman Jack. Anne was a real-life 19th century figure who left behind thousands of diary pages for her biographers to decode. Being fictional, Nell Jackson obviously left no such legacy, but her fantastical story does cross over with real historical events and established folklore from the British Isles.
Eight-part Disney+ series Renegade Nell is set in 1705. To pinpoint the date in TV terms, that’s 100 years before Bridgerton, 200 years after The Tudors, and 40 or so years before Outlander‘s wigs-and-corsets era. The 10 Things I Hate About You cast probably didn’t know it then, but the actors in the 1999 teen rom-com would get their breakout role. In the 25 years since its release, 10 Things I Hate About You has become a cult classic and a career highlight for its actors.
On the surface, 10 Things I Hate About You doesn’t sound like a recipe for success. A William Shakespeare play reworked into a teen comedy featuring a cast of mostly unknown actors? Critics didn’t fall head over heels for it in 1999, but the movie’s appeal has grown over time and attracted new generations of fans (even if sequel plans failed). And if the 10 Things I Hate About You cast was unknown then, now there is no mistaking the talent of stars like Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Taylor Swift‘s “Love Story” is the best country love song of the 2000s, if not the best country love song ever written. Surprisingly, it was inspired by a romance that never got off of the ground. The tune includes references to two classic works of literature. One of these references doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Taylor Swift’s ‘Love Story’ has a nonsensical reference to ‘The Scarlet Letter’

A special piece of cinema history has been unveiled. Seven years before Orson Welles would embark on the production of his legendary directorial debut Citizen Kane, he shot one of his earliest short films, capturing his production of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. The year was 1933 and Welles, only 17 years old, returned to his alma mater, the Todd Seminary for Boys, an independent school in Woodstock, Illinois. Under the tutelage of headmaster and mentor Roger Hill, who encouraged Welles to freely experiment with theatrical and radio productions, he mounted the project.
Now, nearly a century later, around 10 minutes of surviving color footage with sound has been digitized, graciously released by Wellesnet, who acquired it from Roger Hill’s granddaughter Wendy Hill and her cousin Todd Tarbox, who holds the copyright. “My father, Hascy, was cast as Sir Andrew Aguecheek, and my mother, Joanne, played Viola,” Tarbox told Wellesnet. “This production...

After captivating audiences with her gritty roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus, Sydney Sweeney proved her versatility with her turn in the lighthearted Anyone But You.
Her romantic comedy Anyone But You (a Sony Pictures rom-com co-starring Glen Powell) defied all the expectations, and became a surprise box office hit.

Sydney Sweeney has had a busy few months as she rises to new levels of stardom. After the mammoth success of her romantic comedy with Top Gun: Maverick’s Glenn Powell called Anyone But You, the actress starred in the meme-bank Sony film Madame Web. The actress is now gearing up for the release of her first production, the horror film Immaculate.
Sweeney reportedly first came across the script for the film when she auditioned for it way before her fame. Though the project did not take off, the script of the film reportedly kept spinning her head, and when she got the chance to produce her own film, she decided to contact the screenwriter. While there were some changes from the original script, Sweeney mentioned that her performance in one particular scene in the film was the result of her reaction to a real-life incident.
