Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans all star in Materialists, the next film from Oscar-nominated Past Lives director Celine Song. Filming’s now underway in New York.
Given writer-director Celine Song’s elegant 2023 romance Past Lives was nominated for two Oscars – including Best Picture – it’s little surprise that trendy production company A24 was keen to work with her again.
Song’s follow-up movie is somewhat different in tone from her debut, and much starrier: in here we have Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and the phenomenally busy Pedro Pascal. According to the Film & Television Industry Alliance’s production list, filming was due to start in New York on the 15th May; there are now reports, however, that the shoot has already begun.
World of Reel has spotted a couple tweets that appear to confirm this, with one even showing Dakota Johnson on location in Manhattan. Here’s one now:...

Jack Nicholson has been in retirement for a while now. Taking a cue from the title of the last movie he appeared in, 2010’s “How Do You Know,” how do we know? When I talked to Nicholson for this reunion with director James L. Brooks – an unfortunate flop – I asked him why he waited three years to do another movie after his hit, “The Bucket List.” His response: “I’ve been reading scripts. Yes, they are all very similar. You just keep getting these stories about retirement, or the wife dying on you or going to Vegas. I’m definitely at the stage where I just don’t want to make another movie.”
Let’s then applaud this Oscar kingpin, who still holds the record among men for the most nominations and shares most wins (three) for a male actor with Daniel Day-Lewis and Walter Brennan. His victories were for...

Comedy icon Carol Kane reflected on her experience on her new TV show Dinner With The Parents in her new uInterview.
Kane gained recognition as an actress in the 1975 film Hester Street, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for best actress. In the 1970s and ’80s, she appeared in acclaimed films like Dog Day Afternoon and Annie Hall. In the early 1980s, she also appeared on the television series Taxi, acting as a comedic actress for the first time.
Dinner With The Parents is a single-camera comedy series about two 20-something brothers and their awkwardly hilarious weekly dinners at their parents’ house.
“I just think the family dynamic is so fun and so crazy, not any crazier than most families probably, but we just get to play so much, and this character is fantastic, and I got to wear such great clothes,” Kane told uInterview founder Erik Meers.

As the golden era of "The Simpsons" started to die down in the late '90s, a bunch of other adult animated sitcoms rose to prominence, all vying for the cultural power Matt Groening's series once had. From "Futurama" to "King of the Hill" to "South Park," there was no shortage of shows that put their own spin on "The Simpsons" formula, and many of them are still going strong even today. But whereas the "South Park" writers stayed pretty respectful towards "The Simpsons," acknowledging explicitly in their 2006 "Cartoon Wars" special that the older show is far classier and more prestigious than their own, the writers of another prominent raunchy cartoon aimed for far more of a rivalry.

For many entertainers, adding an Oscar to their belt of achievements is a pretty cool thing. But to Jamie Lee Curtis, it just gives her more reason to expand her creative endeavors.
For one, she returned to TV in “The Bear” and the entire thing played out on a haunch. Imagine watching TV and immediately vibing with this character, who has been mentioned but hasn’t been introduced yet.
In Curtis’ case, she didn’t only vibe with the character, she ended up playing her. And oh, for the “Freaky Friday” fans, the movie is returning, with Curtis and Lindsay Lohan set to return. Talk about major career moves.

In 1977, aspiring cartoonist Matt Groening moved from his hometown of Portland, Oregon to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a writer. Like most people who move to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a writer, he took on some of the most menial jobs imaginable. Groening worked in a sewage treatment plant, as a dishwasher, and as a waiter. All the while, Groening worked on what would become his signature creation, the "Life in Hell" comic strip.
Groening would leave "Life in Hell" comics in a small corner of Licorice Pizza, the celebrated Los Angeles record store where he occasionally worked. It was an embittered strip about modern life, a harsh critique of life, love, school, and work. Groening attacked everything the establishment celebrated as normal and good, finding nothing but misery in the real world.
"Life in Hell" was picked up by Wet Magazine and, later the Los Angeles Reader.

In the "The Simpsons" episode "Flaming Moe's, the put-upon bartender Moe Szyslak (Hank Azaria) finds his bar struggling to stay afloat in the wake of increased job satisfaction and family bliss in the city. Homer (Dan Castellaneta) suggests Moe try a new cocktail. Homer then reveals the recipe for a cough syrup-infused drink — the Flaming Homer — that becomes more flavorful after you set it on fire. Moe mixes one and it's an instant hit. Moe also instantly claims credit for inventing the drink, much to Homer's consternation.
The redubbed Flaming Moe is a huge success, and Moe's dive bar quickly grow into a massive event space where Aerosmith performs. Eventually Homer, fed up with not receiving any credit or money, reveals the secret ingredients and Moe's quickly returns to being a dive.

You know, a wise man once said that sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name.
"Cheers" is one of the best and most popular sitcoms of all time. That's not hyperbole, either — critics and fans alike will sing the praises of the show until you can't stand it anymore. "Okay, I get it!" you'll say. "You love 'Cheers'! Leave me alone!" Running for 11 seasons from 1982 to 1993, and starring Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Rhea Perlman, George Wendt, John Ratzenberger, Woody Harrelson, and more, "Cheers" was actually a flop during its first season, finishing last in the ratings during its premiere. Things were so bad, in fact, that the network almost pulled the plug. Eventually, though, "Cheers" found its audience, and that audience couldn't get enough of the barflies and bartenders who called the show home.

Dan Wakefield, a prolific author and journalist who made television history when he created and wrote the controversial late-1970s drama James at 15 only to resign when NBC executives bristled over an episode’s depiction of teenage sexuality, died yesterday at a hospice facility in Miami. He was 91, and had been in declining health in recent months.
His death was announced by his attorney, Ken Bennett, to the Indianapolis Star. Wakefield was born and raised in Indianapolis.
In addition to James at 15 and various novels, Wakefield’s credits include the screenplay for the 1997 film Going All The Way, starring Ben Affleck and Jeremy Davies, based on his 1970 novel of the same name. The 1979 divorce drama Starting Over starring Burt Reynolds, Jill Clayburgh and Candice Bergen, written by James L. Brooks and directed by Alan J. Pakula, was based on Wakefield’s 1973 novel.

Jamie Lee Curtis says that winning an Oscar has completely transformed her career. The 65-year-old actress – known for roles in movies including 'Halloween' and 'Freaky Friday' – took home the Best Supporting Actress prize at last year's ceremony for her part in 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' and says that it has given her opportunities that she never thought possible.Asked by Variety on the red carpet at Sunday's (10.03.24) Academy Awards about how the award win has changed her career, Jamie said: "In really incalculable ways. On the eve of Shirley MacLaine’s 90th birthday (on April 24), let’s revisit on this 96th Academy Awards day what remains one of the top five Oscar acceptance speeches (in my humble opinion) ever: the night 40 years ago when MacLaine won Best Actress for “Terms of Endearment” over co-star Debra Winger (who played her daughter) and three others. It hearkened back to an era before the orchestra played off the big winners if they dared exceed 90 seconds or so. MacLaine’s speech clocked in at a leisurely 3 minutes, 26 seconds, and not a moment of it seemed unnecessary on that night of April 9, 1984 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. It started with, “I’m gonna cry because this show has been as long as my career!” and ended with, “I deserves this. Thank you.” Watch the full presentation and speech above.
It was MacLaine’s sixth nomination and her first and only win.

In the 1993 "The Simpsons" episode "Marge vs. the Monorail," the corrupt nuclear power plant owner Mr. Burns (Harry Shearer) is busted by the Epa for stuffing glowing toxic waste into trees at the local park (the trees sprout tentacles and the squirrels gain eyeball lasers). As punishment, Mr. Burns is fined $3 million, which he happens to have in his wallet. Springfield, suddenly flush with cash, has a town meeting debating what to spend it on. Marge Simpson (Julie Kavner) proposes that they use the money to fix up pothole-strewn Main Street, but a mysterious flim-flam man named Lyle Lanley (Phil Hartman) interrupts her. Using a broad smile and heaps of smarmy charm -- and a "Music Man"-style musical number -- Lanley convinces Springfield to spend the money on a monorail that he will build himself.
Clearly, Lanley is a con man who sells shoddy monorails to unsuspecting cities and...

Having made a name for herself with her film directing debut, there is plenty of attention on what Past Lives filmmaker Celine Song will do for a follow-up. She's previously announced that she was focusing on a New York-set romantic comedy called The Materialists, and we now know that Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans are circling the lead roles.
While The Materialists promises a more comedic bent than the more sorrowful, nostalgic emotions of Past Lives (which we named as our film of 2023), don't expect Song to go shallow in any regards. She's citing her influence for this one as James L. Brooks, master of the complicated rom-com.
The Materialists, which Song wrote and aims to kick off shooting in the spring, will focus on a professional matchmaker named Lucy, who gets involved with a wealthy man but still harbors feelings for the broke actor-waiter she left behind.

It took a savvy comedy fan to know what Andy Kaufman was doing with his career. More than a mere funnyman, Kaufman tended to satirize the trappings of standup comedy, often using his routines to play pranks on the audience. As detailed in Miloš Forman's 1999 biopic "Man on the Moon," Kaufman wanted to host a TV special that contained artificial signal "static" in the hope that viewers would get up out of their seats and whack their "broken" TV sets. That's not funny for the audience, but it's certainly funny for Kaufman.
Part of Kaufman's satirical act was a whole separate stage persona named Tony Clifton, a foul-mouthed, alcoholic lounge singer who cussed and behaved badly. Clifton was also occasionally played by Kaufman's close friend and associate Bob Zmuda, allowing Clifton and Kaufman to occasionally appear in the same room, calling the reality of the character into question. As she strolls comfortably toward multiple Oscar nominations for “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig is on track to set several Academy Awards records tied to her age, gender and the movie’s financial success. In terms of more general achievements, perhaps the most impressive one in her reach is becoming the first filmmaker to have all of her initial three solo features contend for Best Picture. Over the past 95 years, many directors have had shots at earning that distinction and a few have come remarkably close, but none of their chances have been quite as strong as hers.
Since Gerwig did not produce her first two independently-directed films – “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women” (2019) – and, per academy rules, cannot officially share in a “Barbie” Best Picture nomination due to her screen credit of “executive producer” (rather than the qualifying “producer” or “produced by”), she does not and will not soon have any bids...

Celine Song could join a rare club of just filmmakers to win the Academy Award for Best Director with their first-ever movie. Usually, we predict experienced, veteran helmers to win the award or at filmmakers who have at least had a couple of smaller movies under their belt. But sometimes, a debut director comes along with a film that is so special, they earn their place in the history books. This has only happened six times in Oscars history.
Delbert Mann was the first to do it when he won for “Marty” in 1956, six years before Jerome Robbins won for his acclaimed debut “West Side Story” in 1962. Robert Wise, who had already helmed 27 movies before, co-directed the movie with Robbins, but it was Robbins’ debut. Actor Robert Redford then took a trip behind the camera and emerged victorious in 1981 for “Ordinary People.” Three years later, in 1984, James L. Brooks won for “Terms of Endearment.

Get in, loser. We’re riding with Rachel McAdams because she’s still Queen Bee.
Since she’s become a mother, life has changed. During the filming of Lionsgate’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” she had her five-month-old daughter and two-year-old son on set. Even her younger sister and make-up artist Kayleen had her two children, two and three months, by her side. “We had a really amazing mom-positive set,” she tells Variety. “Everyone understood me having to send breast milk down the road in a van all day long.”
But McAdams is susceptible to the looming sense of “mom guilt” that plagues many working parents, despite being “very lucky” to have lots of time with her kids. She found that connection and applied it to portray her role as Barbara Simon, the mother of the titular character Margaret (played by Abby Ryder Fortson) in Kelly Fremon Craig...

Abby Ryder Forstson was so excited by the possibility of being cast in “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret,” she wrote a letter to the filmmakers expressing how she related to the 12-year-old protagonist at the center of Judy Blume’s beloved book. Then, after being cast, she corresponded with Margaret’s onscreen grandmother, Kathy Bates, via letters.
For the first time, Variety is sharing Fortson’s correspondence, starting with the letter she sent to writer-director Kelly Fremon Craig and producers James L. Brooks and Julie Ansell after their first meeting.
In the note, Fortson talks about how much she relates to Margaret Simons, who feels adrift due to relocating to a new school and her parents’ interfaith marriage; her mother is Christian and her father is Jewish. Wrote Forster: “I get made fun of, I don’t have a ton of good friends, I don’t really have a religion,...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Kelly Fremon Craig’s adaptation of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, which marks the first time a book penned by YA icon Judy Blume has made it to the big screen.
Fremon Craig directed and wrote the screenplay and reteamed with producer James L. Brooks following their excellent 2016 teen dramatic comedy The Edge of Seventeen. Like that move, the trials and tribulations of a young girl coming of age take center stage.
In Are You There God?, Abby Ryder Fortson plays the 11-year-old Margaret, who is uprooted from her life in New York City for the suburbs of New Jersey, slogging through the messy and tumultuous throes of puberty with new friends in a new school.

The announcement of a new James L Brooks film has insiders suggesting it’s the ‘herald’ of a potential sequel to The Simpsons movie…
The long-running TV version of The Simpsons may not possess the cultural relevance it once did, but the feature-length film that released back in 2007 did gangbusters business for what was then 20th Century Fox, grossing over half a billion dollars – and that’s just theatrically.
In the years since, the possibility of another film has sometimes been floated, but we’ve never seen anything come to fruition – until now perhaps.

The catalyst for the current rumours lie with series producer, James L Brooks. 20th Century Studios (formerly 20th Century Fox) has green-lit a new venture by the producer, a dramedy project titled Ella McKay, starring Sex Education actor Emma Mackey.

Forty years ago, Terms of Endearment started its run in theaters. Along with its success at the box office, the film got more Oscar nominations (11) than any other movie that year, and it won in five of those categories, including Best Picture, Best Director (for James L. Brooks), and two acting awards, one for Jack Nicholson and one for Shirley MacLaine. We’ve spoken to MacLaine many times over the years, and part of her success in the Terms of Endearment role of Aurora Greenway, she said, is that there are so many similarities between her real-life self and the character. Calling a movie a “tearjerker” could practically qualify as a spoiler, especially in the case of “Terms of Endearment.” Because it is very, very funny.
For writer-director James L. Brooks, that heightened comic tone was always essential when he first began working to adapt Larry McMurtry’s novel of the same name. His devotion led to a unique challenge: turn a character mentioning “cancer” into a laugh line. In the finished film, he even follows the word’s utterance with a punctuative spit take for good measure.
“It was so important that it be a comedy,” Brooks says, speaking with Variety over a Zoom call. “The word ‘cancer’ then was just — you couldn’t imagine. It was just a word that nobody wanted to say or deal with at that time. It was a bizarre goal. But it was because the picture had to be a comedy to work.”

For many younger film fans, the name James L. Brooks might not hold much significance. Probably, this has much to do with the fact that most of his most influential work was at least 25 years ago, and Brooks hasn’t directed a film since 2010. That said, if you’re not familiar with his work, it is important to know that Brooks is one of the most respected and influential filmmakers of the past 30 years.

When Barbra Streisand’s “Yentl” opened on Nov. 18, 1983, directing was very much a man’s world. In the 1970s, there had been a few inroads for women. Italian director Lina Wertmuller was nominated for best director for 1976’s “Seven Beauties” Stateside, actress Barbara Loden, who was married to Oscar-winning director Elia Kazan, wrote, directed and starred in the acclaimed 1970 indie drama “Wanda,” which won best foreign film at the Venice Film Festival. She never followed up with another movie and died of breast cancer in 1980.
There was also Joan Micklin Silver (“Hester Street”), Claudia Weill (“Girlfriends”), Martha Coolidge (“Not a Pretty Picture”), Joan Tewkesbury (“Old Boyfriends”) and Joan Darling (“First Love”). In the thirteen years since his last directorial feature, James L. Brooks has stayed busy helping emerging filmmakers like Kelly Fremon Craig realize their visions with the stellar The Edge of Seventeen and this year’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Thankfully, the 83-year-old filmmaker is now getting behind the camera once again for a long-awaited directorial feature.
Brooks is set to kick off production on Ella McCay, a 20th Century Studios project, by the end of the year. Set to star Emma Mackey, the romantic drama follows an “idealistic politician poised to run governor as she deals with lingering family issues.” The project was mentioned in the latest issue of Production Weekly and confirmed by the Boston Globe and Providence Journal, both based near where the film is set to shoot.
In the film, Mackey’s character will also be “taking care of her socially anxious, estranged...

Jack Nicholson Isn’t Retired Yet, Says Director James L. Brooks: ‘I Don’t Buy’ That He’s Done Acting
Thirteen years after last appearing onscreen, and Jack Nicholson might still be open to working.
The Oscar winner most recently starred in 2010 rom-com “How Do You Know,” directed by his “Terms of Endearment” helmer James L. Brooks decades after first collaborating on the 1983 drama. Brooks told The Wrap that despite rumors, Nicholson is not retired.
“I don’t think he’s retired,” Brooks said. “I don’t buy that he’s retired.”
He continued, “I remember there was once a friend of mine who one of these raging, alcoholic-driven arguments [with me] about who was the greatest actor at the time. This was at Dustin Hoffman’s height and everything like that. I’m saying Jack Nicholson. He’s saying Dustin Hoffman. I went with [Nicholson] because I said Jack could play either in ‘The Odd Couple.'”

Homer Simpson has been strangling Bart for over thirty years, and despite rumours to the contrary, he’ll keep doing it. An odd thing to say about child abuse, but here we are.
A recent episode of The Simpsons suggested that Homer’s days of strangling Bart had come to an end. In the episode McMansion & Wife, which aired on October 22nd, Homer shakes the hand of his new neighbour, who comments that Homer had “quite a grip” when they shook hands. “See, Marge, strangling the boy has paid off,” Homer said to his wife. “Just kidding, I don’t do that anymore. Times have changed.“
This prompted fans to believe that The Simpsons would be putting an end to the long-running “gag,” with some applauding the action and others criticizing it. However, series co-developer and producer James L. Brooks told People that nothing has changed with the series. “Don...

The Simpsons’ rascally eldest child better continue to watch his back: Bart will still be getting strangled by his dad, Homer, co-creator and producer James L. Brooks confirmed to People.
“Don’t think for a second we’re changing anything,” he told the publication. “Nothing’s getting tamed. Nothing, nothing, nothing. He’ll continue to be strangled — [if] you want to use that awful term for it. He’ll continue to be loved by his father in a specific way.”
