If you were a kid growing up in the ’80s, one thing was true. Video games were the spawn of Satan. Okay, we know that isn’t true. But our parents? Adults were terrified of your Atari and your Nintendo, and filmmakers made all sorts of movies that painted games in a negative light. In Wargames a nuclear war was damn near started! While there were plenty of films that understood the imagination and the creative spirit that video games could foster, such as Tron and The Last Starfighter for examples, there’s also a film such as Cloak & Dagger, which goes to some really dark territory to teach a lesson to kids that, honestly, everyone could stand to learn.
Cloak and Dagger starred Henry Thomas. Y’know, the E.T. kid (who we recently profiled on Wtf Happened to this Celeb), who grew up to become the Suicide...

Over the years, Parton has received a series of death threats. Her method of handling these has varied, but early in her career they greatly alarmed her. She turned down an exciting opportunity because of a series of threats to her life.

The 1980s hit comedy 9 To 5 is getting the remake treatment thanks to 20th Century Studios, with Jennifer Aniston currently set to produce the film.
It’s no way to make a livin’, but the 9 To 5 is something that most of us can relate to, not least because the phrase was immortalised in the 1980 office satire (not to mention Dolly Parton’s iconic title song) that starred Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dabney Coleman and Parton herself.

Yes, 2023 was a great year for cinema were far scarier than any nights we would spend at Freddy’s. Not even the likes of Vin Diesel driving cars through explosions (again) or Jason Statham punching prehistoric sharks (again) could’ve prepared us for the likes of The Flash shaking our faith in superhero cinema or The Exorcist: Believer shaking our very faith in God… and by God, I mean David Gordon Green’s ability to handle horror. And need I say any more about my previous episode on EXPEND4BLES, the dumbest movie title since FAN4STIC and the dumbest Stallone sequel since Rocky V? But thank God for the likes of Nolan and Scorsese for renewing our faith in the cinematic experience, just as Winnie-the-pooh: Blood And Honey getting a theatrical release was about to have us swearing off the movie gods. And thanks to all you amazing readers...

Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" has always had a terrific cast, but a particular masterstroke of casting came in the show's second season finale, during a flashback in which John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) takes his dying father, John Dutton, Jr., up to the mountains for one last ride. The patriarch is played by the great Dabney Coleman, an actor partially known for playing hard-ass characters in things like "WarGames" and "Cloak and Dagger." We don't see him for long in "Yellowstone," but in his short amount of screen time, he leaves a tremendous impact -- not only in the emotional conversation he has with his son, but his edict to never give up an inch of the Dutton Ranch fuels Costner's character throughout the whole series.

This November, after three full years of waiting, fans of FX’s “Fargo” will be treated to a brand new season. Unlike the anthology series’ fourth iteration, which served as a prequel to its first two, the upcoming fifth batch of episodes will tell an entirely original Midwestern crime story. Leading the season’s star-studded cast is Jon Hamm, who has his sights set on earning his first Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor Golden Globe nomination this winter. Since he was already honored in the corresponding drama series category for “Mad Men” in 2008 and 2016, his possible new victory would make him the seventh man to clinch Golden Globes for performances on both continuing and non-continuing TV programs.
Hamm, who picked up four additional Golden Globe bids for “Mad Men” between 2009 and 2013, has already begun his splashy 2023 return to prestige TV by playing a new supporting role on the third season of “The Morning Show.

NBC network dominated the 35th annual Primetime Emmys, with a groundbreaking drama continuing a winning streak, a little-watched sitcom making its name known and another sitcom proving the network might have cancelled it too soon. Eddie Murphy and Joan Rivers hosted the event on September 25, 1983. Rivers claimed she had waited nine years for an invitation to the Emmys, and would be wearing every dress she owed (which ended up being nine), and Murphy was excited about his first nomination. Read on for our Emmys flashback 40 years ago to 1983.
Two years prior, a little police drama had debuted, changing television with its realism and continuing storylines involving the personal lives of the characters. “Hill Street Blues” not only dominated the Nielsen ratings, but it won numerous Emmys throughout its run. This year would mark its third of four consecutive Best Drama Series victories, winning over “Cagney & Lacey,” “Fame,” “Magnum, P.I.” and “St. Elsewhere.

Nostalgia for the ’80s has been inspiring entertainment since well before “Stranger Things” hit streaming. Classic films from “Pretty Woman” to “American Psycho” have received musical adaptations on Broadway. And last year “Top Gun: Maverick” soared at the box office and into the Best Picture Oscars race: solidifying short-shorts, jet engines, and long overdue ’80s sequels as timeless symbols of Hollywood excellence.

Watch enough Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda interviews, and you’ll pick up on a charming contradiction. The longtime friends and Hollywood legends have a specific onscreen dynamic, one they’ve perfected since debuting opposite each other and country music legend Dolly Parton in Colin Higgins’ beloved “9 to 5.”
Tomlin’s brilliant and brash wildcard characters — personified middle fingers in heels — typically win over and radicalize Fonda’s sexed-up but straight-laced conservatives with a slow drip of warm frankness and Tomlin’s innate best friend energy. In the 1980 feminist workplace comedy, it’s Tomlin’s veteran supervisor character who ropes Fonda’s naive office newcomer and Parton’s sexually harassed secretary into a revenge plot that nearly kills their terrible boss, Mr. Hart (Dabney Coleman).

The 1982 Oscar-winner is known for its farcical hijinks but it’s the focus on weightier issues that helped it stay the course
The classic American screwball comedies of the late 30s and 40s are revered for their sparkling dialogue, their intricate plotting and their mixing-and-matching of glamorous, witty Golden Age icons like Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, Barbara Stanwyck and Claudette Colbert. But one of the important, under-appreciated qualities of those movies – what made Adam’s Rib, Bringing Up Baby, The Lady Eve, His Girl Friday, and others really pop – is there was something serious at stake. These romcoms were not all meet-cutes and gimmicks, but cultural arenas for a battle of the sexes that was being waged off screen, too. Happy endings were achieved through intense negotiations.

Fans of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone got a treat this evening when Paramount + dropped the first teaser trailer for 1923, Yellowstone‘s much-anticipated second prequel series. It follows hot on the heels of 1883, which nabbed the streamer’s best debut for an original program when it made its debut last December. While it was a surprise to learn that 1883 was only ever planned to be a one-and-done, 1923 seems to pick up right where it left off.
James Badge Dale stars as John Dutton, the father of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton Jr on Yellowstone (previously played by Dabney Coleman in flashbacks). By the period covered in 1923, his parents, James and Margaret (played by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill on 1883), aren’t around anymore, and he works for his father’s brother Jacob, played by Harrison Ford. Previously, it was revealed that Jacob and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) are childless...

With just over a month before the much anticipated Yellowstone prequel, 1923, hits Paramount Plus, Vanity Fair has posted an exclusive first look at the series. The images show Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren reuniting for the first time since Peter Weir’s magnificent The Mosquito Coast in 1986. In the article, a lot of information about the show is revealed. If you watched Yellowstone and its prequel 1883, you’d know that John Dutton’s great-grandfather, James Dutton (Tim McGraw), seemed to meet a violent end sometime in the 1890s. This new prequel focuses on his brother, Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and his wife, Cara (Helen Mirren), who are now the patriarch and matriarch of the sprawling ranch. James’s son, John Dutton Sr, is played by James Badge Dale, with him the father of Costner’s John Jr.

Hardman’s doc examines workplace inequality 40 years after release of classic comedy ’9 to 5’.
Camille Hardman, the co-director of documentary Still Working 9 To 5, has attacked the “absolutely shocking” and “abhorrent” current conditions for women in low-paid work in the US at a ‘Women in Film, Women at Work’ roundtable event at this week’s Doclisboa festival in Portugal.
“The minimum wage, it’s 7.25 an hour. You can be a single mother with two kids and earn 14,000 a year…it’s a very, very, very low wage,” said Hardman. “Women have to use food stamps. They socially have to get help.

Four decades after she earned her first pop-chart Number One and an Oscar nomination for “9 to 5,” Dolly Parton is set to release a significantly re-imagined version of the song with fellow pop-country superstar Kelly Clarkson. The announcement of the track, to be released Sept. 9, coincides with Friday’s celebration of National Women’s Equality Day, first designated by Congressional resolution on Aug. 26, 1973. The new take on the 1980 hit, produced by Shane McAnally, Sasha Alex Sloan, and King Henry, was created especially for the upcoming documentary Still Working 9 to 5,...

"Boardwalk Empire" never lacked great villains. While it could run low on momentum, with storylines fizzling out and characters getting thrust to the sidelines, it was always compelling when it let its antagonists dominate the scene. Characters like real-life mobster Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg), fictional Prohibition agent Nelson Van Alden (Michael Shannon), or the vile Commodore Kaestner (Dabney Coleman) gave "Boardwalk" thrilling setpieces and intimidating performances. For a show that studied the relationship between government, organized crime, and the individual capacity for sin, villains like these proved essential.
But the show's most compelling villain might well have been Giuseppe "Gyp" Rosetti (Bobby Cannavale), the...

Viewed with 20/20 hindsight, all of history appears inevitable simply because it went to the trouble of happening. More than four decades after it defied skeptics, entertained millions, and hit the No. 2 spot (just behind “The Empire Strikes Back”) on the list of top-grossing 1980 movies, green-lighting “9 to 5” might now appear to be one of those surefire, no-brainer decisions made by Hollywood brass with absolute certainty of striking box-office gold. It wasn’t, of course, and reminding us of just how dicey a proposition it really was back in the day is just one of the enlightening and amusing elements of “Still Working 9 to 5.”

The Sony Choice Collection has rescued another long forgotten TV movie from obscurity and released it as a burn-to-order title. "Kiss Me...Kill Me" is a crime thriller that was originally telecast in 1976. Compared to similar fare from that era, the film is fairly routine, though it might well be more appreciated today than it was at the time of its original airing. This is due to the fact that it boasts a strong cast of seasoned veteran actors- something that was relatively common in the 1970s, when the concept of TV movies became very popular. Most of these productions had star power and audiences enjoyed seeing some of their favorite movie stars on the small screen. "Kiss Me...Kill Me" stars Stella Stevens as Stella Stafford, an L.A-based investigator for the District Attorney's office. She is assigned to an especially disturbing murder case involving Maureen Coyle...

The 1980 comedy hit 9 To 5 came at a crucial turning point for women in the workplace. Star/Producer Jane Fonda explains in the new documentary of its creation and the movement that spawned it, that she and producting partner Bruce Gilbert wanted to do a serious film on the struggle women had endured for decades, but instead decided that to get anyone to pay attention the only way to do it was with laughs. Thus a smash hit comedy was born, initially with a screenplay by Patricia Resnick that as she explained was met with creative differences, and then later saw its problems solved when ironically a man, the late Colin Higgins (Harold And Maude) came in to write and direct the final film.

Dolly Parton and Kelly Clarkson have joined forces with producer Shane McAnally to record a very different version of the Parton classic “9 to 5” as a duet for an upcoming documentary, “Still Working 9 to 5,” just announced for a premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March.
The documentary’s premiere at SXSW was announced Wednesday morning, but for the filmmakers, the new recording by Parton and Clarkson counts as a big reveal, too. “We could do a documentary just on the making of the duet,” co-director/producer Gary Lane tells Variety.
Of announcing the song as well as film, Lane adds, “It almost feels like launching two projects in one.”

Walter Mirisch’s slam-bang, eardrum-pounding Sensurround stock footage orgy for the Centennial Year gathers an impressive lineup of big stars to celebrate the U.S. Navy’s biggest aircraft carrier battle: Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune. Director Jack Smight manages the talky, exposition-laden account of a sprawling, complicated battle rather well, at least in terms of clarity. What is unwatchable pan-scanned on TV isn’t half bad for fans of big-scale war movies. Pi gives us an approximation of Sensurround (I think), and also John Ford’s short subject The Battle of Midway from 1942.
