Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
A bizarre recurring issue with the Amityville “franchise” is that the films tend to be needlessly complicated. Back in the day, the first sequels moved away from the original film’s religious-themed haunted house storyline in favor of streamlined, easily digestible concepts such as “haunted lamp” or “haunted mirror.”
As the budgets plummeted and indie filmmakers capitalized on the brand’s notoriety, it seems the wrong lessons were learned. Runtimes have ballooned past the 90-minute mark and the narratives are often saggy and unfocused.
Both issues are clearly on display in Amityville Karen (2022), a film that starts off rough, but promising, and ends with a confused whimper.
The promise is embodied by the tinge of self-awareness in Julie Anne Prescott (The Amityville Harvest)’s screenplay,...

The latest work from Hungarian directors Gergö Elekes and József Gallai, a voiceover opens Aftermath to establish this world where humanity is on the verge of an important change. A subsequent interview may reveal that more tests are needed, yet it remains clear that humanity is close to a vital medical discovery.
The next scene introduces a distressed Kate (Fruzsina Nagy), who leaves her home with no intention of returning. Upon receiving a call from her irate boss, her frustrations are shared through expository dialogue regarding how she is the only employee who has consistently worked on a major project. In a moment that feels glaringly artificial, Kate takes her eye off the road and is in an accident.

The latest cult classic to get a 4K re-release is Gregg Araki’s 1997 Gen X trip “Nowhere,” courtesy of Strand Releasing. An apocalyptic dive into a world of teens more hedonistic and revelry-making than the scary wake-up call of Araki’s “The Doom Generation” two years prior, the perverse L.A.-set “Nowhere” has a killer soundtrack including Radiohead, Slowdive, Hole, Sonic Youth, Massive Attack, Portishead, Nine Inch Nails, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and much more to add to the teenage moodiness. Strand is currently touring the restored (and uncut) film nationwide starting Friday, October 6, and IndieWire shares the exclusive new trailer below.
The cast is led by James Duval, Rachel True, Nathan Bexton, Chiara Mastroianni, Debi Mazar, Kathleen Robertson, Christina Applegate, Ryan Phillippe, Heather Graham, and Mena Suvari, with appearances from Denise Richards, Shannen Doherty, Rose McGowan, and John Ritter. A new episode of the Revisited video series has just been released, and in this one we’re looking back at the 2002 film May (watch it Here), which was the feature debut of writer/director Lucky McKee and happens to be a movie that’s great to watch during the Halloween season. To hear all about it, check out the video embedded above!
May has the following synopsis: Young misfit May endured a difficult childhood because of her lazy eye. And though contact lenses have helped May adjust as a young adult, her deep-seated awkwardness remains a problem. Adam, a young man obsessed with fixing wrecked cars, takes a shine to May’s oddball ways. But May’s strangeness ultimately drives him away, leaving her open to the advances of her co-worker Polly. When Polly dumps her too, May’s emotional instability turns violent.

"Donnie Darko: The Director's Cut" immediately establishes itself as a different viewing experience from the original 2001 film, as Jake Gyllenhaal's teen protagonist rides his bike home in his pajamas to a new soundtrack song. Echo & The Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon" is such a signature needle drop that it feels a little off to hear it replaced by Inxs's "Never Tear Us Apart."
It's as if writer-director Richard Kelly is now cueing the audience through music that it's about to enter a new "Tangent Universe," apart from the Primary Universe, just as Donnie himself does in one interpretation of the film. That interpretation gets a stronger push in "Donnie Darko: The Director's Cut," which introduces those capitalized terms onscreen and pulls another soundtrack switcheroo later when it replaces composer Michael Andrews' recognizable "Liquid Spear Waltz" with a piece of opera music.
George Lucas famously changed a song at the end...

There was a time us old folk remember when you would rent a messed up little indie horror movie based solely on the cover and description. No Twitter hyperbole or festival raving aside from what was written on the box (which was often not to be believed). Not even a Rotten Tomatoes score to check! Just the cover art and you. And sometimes, you’d discover a hidden gem.
Lucky McKee’s May (2002) was one of those movies for a lot of people. A weird little flick that found its fanbase on home video. The eventual cult classic didn’t quite pre-date the internet but did come before Netflix and Tubi streaming. I watched it again for the first time in years and was taken back at how unique May really is.
If embarrassing American Idol auditions were a horror subgenre (they probably should be), May would be a perfect pairing.

Strand Releasing is restoring Gregg Araki’s 1997 cult film “Nowhere,” bringing stars James Duval, Christina Applegate, Debi Mazar and Mena Suvari into 4K. This is the final addition to the restoration of Araki’s 1990’s Teen Apocalypse trilogy. In addition to Strand, the Bureau Sales and French producers Why Not are assisting on the project.
“I’m so gratified that these films are finding a new generation of viewers and seeing them projected at theatres and venues across the globe,” said Araki. Select scenes omitted in the original theatrical “Nowhere” release for MPAA rating purposes will be restored in this new director’s cut.
“Nowhere” is a black comedy take on teen drama. Araki mashes together decades of teenage television and movie tropes and wraps them up in this intense 24-hour snippet into the lives of Los Angeles college students. “Sexy, psychedelic, dementedly funny, with a sensational soundtrack…it’s like ‘Clueless’ with nipple rings,...

"You know that I really only love you." Strand Releasing has debuted a new trailer for a 4K re-release of The Doom Generation, a classic Gregg Araki film from the 90s. It first premiered at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival, celebrating its 28th anniversary this year. It was also in the 2023 Sundance Film Festival line-up this year as one of their "From the Vault" offerings. Jordan White & Amy Blue, two troubled teens, pick up an adolescent drifter, Xavier Red. Together, the threesome embark on a sex-and-violence-filled journey through an America of psychos & quickie marts. Starring James Duval, Rose McGowan, & Johnathon Schaech. The Doom Generation, restored in 4K with scenes edited for it's theatrical release in 1995, this version reflects the Director's Cut intended by Araki. It has been completely re-timed / re-edited for today's technological standards. The sound is also remastered in a new 5.1 mix. Araki's films are a bit of an acquired taste,...

While Gregg Araki hasn’t made a feature film in nearly a decade, since 2014’s White Bird in a Blizzard, the director has kept busy on a number of high-profile TV series. Now, he’s revisiting one of his earlier cult classics with the second entry into his “Teen Apocalypse Trilogy,” 1995’s The Doom Generation. Restored in 4K as well as retimed and remastered in a new 5.1 mix, this new version also features scenes that were cut out of the theatrical release nearly thirty years ago. Following the restoration’s premiere at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, it’ll now get a theatrical release from Strand Releasing starting April 7 at IFC Center and the new trailer has landed.

Indie filmmaker Gregg Araki’s wild, violent, and erotic “The Doom Generation” has been mostly available on middling DVD releases and occasional repertory prints since its radical release in 1995. Araki’s fifth feature film and the second in his Teen Apocalypse Trilogy — bookended by “Totally Fucked Up” and “Nowhere” — “The Doom Generation” will soon re-open in 4K thanks to a new restoration. Watch the new trailer, an IndieWire exclusive, below.
In Araki’s chaotic road trip nightmare, headed home after a wild night at a Los Angeles club, young lovers Jordan White (James Duval) and Amy Blue (Rose McGowan) pick up a dangerously handsome drifter named Xavier Red (Johnathon Schaech). Jordan doesn’t see a problem with offering Xavier a quick ride, but his acid-tongued girlfriend thinks he’s a creep. When Xavier inadvertently kills a convenience store clerk, they are forced to go on the run, traversing a bizarre and ultra-violent America.

Filmmakers submitted 16,000 movies to Sundance this year for a lineup of 111 features and 65 shorts, but the most fearless cinematic achievement I saw during the festival was made 28 years ago. Director Gregg Araki’s “The Doom Generation,” a zany, violent, and erotically charged depiction of Gen-x malaise, returned to the Egyptian Theater, where it last screened in 1995, in a 4k restoration.
“That’s the scene of the crime!” Araki beamed to me a few hours before the new screening — and indeed, watching “Doom Generation” today, it’s almost as if Araki got away with murder, much like his ambling protagonists.
Reassembled by Strand ahead of its April release, the surrealist road trip at the center “Doom Generation” finds a wayward teen couple (James Duval and a pre-“Scream” Rose McGowan) in a spiral of mayhem that starts once the troublemaking hedonist Xavier (Johnathon Schaech) jumps into their car. Richard Kelly, who was only 25 while directing his genre-hybrid, deliciously ominous "Donnie Darko," had been inspired to pen the screenplay after hearing a news report while growing up in Richmond, Virginia. Per this news report, a chunk of ice had fallen off a plane and crashed into a boy's bedroom. This image haunted Kelly for years, as the incident could symbolize myriad things for the boy who had evaded near death, including questions about the meaning of existence and the concept of deus ex machina. These speculations took shape in the story of Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal), a troubled boy who narrowly evades death, and goes on to unlock the powers of time travel to prevent the collapse of the primary universe. While being mired in teenage angst and existential dread, Donnie is plagued by visions of a man in a rabbit suit, who plays a seminal role in Donnie's heartbreaking journey.

Donnie Darko is your typical moody teenage boy. He also happens to frequently converse with a giant bunny rabbit named Frank (James Duval) and thinks the world is going to end in approximately 28 days — just read his forearm! He is also pretty sure that time travel is real, and that the crazy old lady who the neighborhood kids have nicknamed "Grandma Death" (Patience Cleveland) somehow holds the key to understanding all of this.
As the main character of Richard Kelly's 2001 film "Donnie Darko," Donnie's psyche is on full display as viewers watch him struggle to understand his true purpose in life after a gigantic jet engine falls off a plane and smashes into his room one night while he's out sleepwalking. When it was first released, the movie bombed at the box office — it only made a little over 500,000 against a 4 million budget (ouch) — but it has gone on...

Christmas movies are numerous and greatly vary in quality and entertainment value – to put it mildly. For every great one, there are dozens, if not hundreds of disposable, Hallmark-style movies. But, there are no shortage of great holidays picks to entertain you and your family this holiday season, so here are some of our own personal Christmas classics!
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
Originally not exactly beloved at the time (critics didn’t appreciate the film and audiences seemed tepid about it), it has now become a family classic that is enjoyed every year. It’s become a sort of cult film that transcended its status and circled back to being a major hit for Jim Henson Studios (and Disney who now owns it). What makes this one so great is that mix of whimsy with a classic performance from Michael Caine who played his character 100 serious and direct while surrounded by Muppets.

You can watch the movie over on the YouTube channel linked above, or you can just watch it in the embed at the top of this article.
B. Harrison Smith directed Garlic & Gunpowder from a screenplay he crafted with Steven Chase and Zachary Sasim. Here’s the story: A comet is on track to destroy the planet – or not, depending on who you talk to. The world’s top 1 aren’t taking any chances and are planning on...

Why do horror villains scare us so much? Why do characters like Freddy Krueger and Leatherface haunt our nightmares in addition to our movie screens? Experts have several different ideas about the answer, with the general consensus being that horror villains function as metaphors, specifically as ways for us to externalize all our fears about society. "The body that scares and appalls changes over time, as do the individual characteristics that add up to monstrosity, as do the preferred interpretations of that monstrosity," Jack Halberstam writes in "Skin Shows: Gothic Horror and the Technology of Monsters." He continues, "Within the traits that make a body monstrous ... we may read the difference between an other and a self, a pervert and a normal person, a foreigner and a native."
In other words, horror villains come in all shapes and sizes, and on some metaphorical level their effectiveness depends on their ability...

James Duval is the likable dummy who thinks self-interment will bring him some of the luck he’s down on
James Duval, the man who played Frank the Rabbit in Donnie Darko, is the star of this intriguing stoner comedy-drama, whose wacky/terrifying premise almost lives up to the legendary interdimensional bunny. He plays Sid, an inveterate LA toker and online gamer (Challenger is his digital ID) who, 40 years old and going nowhere, decides to bury himself alive and livestream the ordeal on the internet. Based on the YouTube videos of some Russians who’ve done the same thing, he believes it will bring him good luck.
The ploy is all the more surprising, because for the first half-hour writer-director Paul Boyd keeps us firmly in Lebowski land. Sid is Echo Park’s resident friendly neighbourhood dealer, handing out complimentary joints to the schoolkids he sells kush to. After being...

Its going to be a love letter to 90s slasher films in the style of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. The movie will also have elements of films like Mean Girls as well as Revenge of the Nerds. So it will have some humor mixed in as well to the film.

When a desperate film producer tries an ancient herbal remedy on his stand-in star, a strange curse takes effect. in the midnight hour, the star is transformed into a ferocious beast which rampages through Hollywood. Sounds so bad it might be good, right? Wrong. It's just bad.
Bargain basement Eighties star C Thomas Howell (remember him?) plays the producer, Breen Nash, whose troubles begin when he accidentally kills mysteriously popular actor and social disaster Huckle Saxton (James Duval). He finds a lookalike (also played by Duval) and plans to make a simple substitution in order to save his film, but the lookalike has scars which, we're told, no make-up can cover (something nobody who has worked with make-up will believe for a second). Rather than, say, put him in a mask (or use the Plan 9 From Outer Space method and have him hold a cloak over his face), Nash decides.
