At long last, Eddie Murphy is reprising his role as street-smart cop Axel Foley in the fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which is set to hit Netflix this summer. But, it isn’t easy being a middle aged action star. It’s been nearly thirty years since we last saw Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, and in a recent interview with People Magazine he admitted that the shoot was a “rough one”.“I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore,” he said. At any rate, Murphy won’t be the only aged actor from the original to show up, with many of the classic Beverly Hills Cop cast members are set to join him in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Here’s everything we know about Beverly Hills Cop 4!

Netflix is continuing to roll out its celebration of iconic films, this time turning the page to 1984.
As part of the streaming platform’s “Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection,” Netflix has unveiled the 1984 films celebrating their 40-year anniversary in 2024 with classics like “Footloose” and “Sixteen Candles” alongside Oscar contenders “Amadeus” and “Iceman.”
The Milestone Movies hail from Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, and Sony — the distributors that license content to Netflix.
Starting today, April 1, 2024, Netflix subscribers can revisit Brian de Palma’s erotic noir “Body Double” and Kevin Bacon’s breakout performance in “Footloose.” How about a double feature? There’s also “Repo Man” and “Beverly Hills Cop,” streaming just in time for franchise reboot “Beverly Hills Cop: Axle F” out this summer.

Once upon a time, Hollywood studios made original movies. Lots of them. Granted, "original" is a relative term when we're talking about this industry. Studios have always hedged their bets by relying on popular genres or recycling tried-and-true formulas. When a film went into production, moguls and executives were hoping for a healthy return on their investment, while stars generally tried their damnedest not to alienate their fans while avoiding the perils of typecasting. Once the film wrapped, it was on to the next one — and the next one was rarely a sequel.
This business model changed drastically in the 1970s when films like "The Godfather," "The Exorcist" and "Love Story" became wildly profitable cultural phenomena. When the studios realized people were lining up to see these movies again and again like they were amusement park rides, they reasoned that the safest course of action would be to continue the...

When we last hung out with Eddie Murphy's Axel Foley, he was wreaking havoc at a fictional Southern California amusement park (clearly based on Disneyland) while trying to apprehend the facility's chief of security, who murdered Foley's ill-tempered mentor, Inspector Todd (Gil Hill). If you're saying, "Uh, no, he was chasing the Eurotrash criminals who shot up his buddy Chief Bogomil (Ronny Cox)," you are one of the vast majority of moviegoers who skipped John Landis' "Beverly Hills Cop III."
Released over Memorial Day weekend in 1994, Murphy's third go-round as the fast-talking Detroit detective who keeps making unwelcome visits to Los Angeles to avenge dead or badly wounded friends arrived seven years after the last installment, and audiences had moved on. Whereas the first two movies grossed $316 million and $300 million worldwide (the bulk of that money being made in the U.S.), "Beverly Hills Cop III" only...

The slasher and the actioner seem like two disparate types of movies, however, both often feature a high degree of suspense, lengthy chases, and a lot of death. A slasher villain will hunt down hapless victims, whereas an action hero may go after one enemy or a whole group of them. Grisly kills and an assortment of weapons are also to be expected.
Now, there are some action movies that infuse more slasher elements than others. Classics like The Terminator and Predator are unmistakably modeled after slashers, but they’re not the only ones. Others take on the traits of slashers more than their peers, ultimately creating a more unique viewing experience.
The following ten lesser seen movies give action and slasher fans the best of both worlds.

Eddie Murphy turned 61 years old this year, which makes him roughly the same age John Wayne was when he played the out-to-pasture codger Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit." That film, and Wayne's subsequent Westerns, had an elegiac, one-last-ride feeling to them. Yes, the Duke's cancer was in remission at this point, but he still looked washed. When he finally succumbed to the disease on the eve of the 1980s, the book quietly closed on an outmoded era of Hollywood filmmaking. It was time. Of all the golden age stars, Wayne was uniquely unsuited to the coked-up, strip-club glitz pioneered by producing teams like Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer and Jon Peters/Peter Guber.
Of all the big-screen '80s superstars, no one was more at home in this olio of excess than Eddie Murphy. His fast-talking, nimble-minded riffing was perfectly attuned to the hurtling energy of the decade's blockbuster action-comedies. Murphy...

The relationship between Eddie Murphy and Netflix would appear to be paying off. Netflix has come to a one-time license deal with Paramount Pictures which sees the streaming giant produce ‘Beverly Hills Cop 4’.
Back at the beginning of October Murphy confirmed that once Coming to America 2 is done and dusted, the new instalment in the Beverly Hills franchise would be his next project before he heads back to stand-up comedy.
“Yeah, that [BHC4] is what we’re doing after ‘Coming to America 2′. We’re doing ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ and then the plan is to get back on stage and do stand-up. That’s what I’ll be doing mostly is stand-up. These movies and ‘Saturday Night Live’ it’s kind of like…I’m looking at it as a bookend. If I decided I wanted to stay on the couch forever, I ended it on a funny note.”

Horror was so prevalent and popular in the early ‘80s that even the action genre wanted in on the…uh, action. Chuck Norris haiyah’ed a Michael Myers wannabe in Silent Rage (1982), so next up it was granite faced Charles Bronson’s turn to take on slashers with 10 to Midnight (1983), a sleazy yet fascinating trip through the mind of a serial killer. While it’s never as deep as it thinks it is, it’s smarter than it has any right to be.
Released in March, this Cannon production, co-distributed by MGM, recouped its 4.5 million plus a few million more at the box office. For my money, Martin Brest's Beverly Hills Cop was one of the best action comedies to come out of the 1980s. Eddie Murphy was in his prime, Judge Reinhold and John Ashton made for the perfect bumbling officer duo and Lisa Eilbacher delivered a smart and sexy performance as Jenny Summers in the film. It's a classic piece of cinema that I make a point of watching at least once a year, if not more.... Read More...

With the massive scale of Hollywood and the massive number of actresses, actors and comedians that reside and operate inside of its borders, it can be easy for fans to lose sight of any one particular actor or actress, even when they have the massive impact that Lisa Eilbacher had when she was active in Hollywood. People became aware of Lisa and her ability to provide powerful support to leading actors through her roles in An Officer and a Gentleman and Beverly Hills Cop. For many fans that would consider those two movies to be the zenith of Lisa’s career

Hollywood studios occasionally have an uncanny knack of announcing almost identical film projects at the same time. In the 1980s, we had rival police dog movies K-9 and Turner And Hooch. The 90s saw the release of rival eruption movies (Dante's Peak and Volcano), opposing killer space rock pictures (Deep Impact and Armageddon) and duelling insect comedies (Antz and A Bug's Life). We provided a detailed run-down on these rival movies back in 2015.

Around the year 1989, meanwhile, film producers briefly fell in love with a curiously specific genre: undersea sci-fi horror. What would happen if you crossed Demon Seed, Burnt Offerings, and The Legacy? You’d end up with a pretty confusing six hour horror movie I’d imagine, so scratch that. But what would happen if you took those same elements, made it a TV movie, and threw in The Hardy Boys’ Parker Stevenson for good measure? Well, then you’d be watching This House Possessed (1981), a supremely goofy, sublimely entertaining movie of the week that’s low on scares but high on smiles.
Broadcast on Friday, February 6th, 1981 as part of The ABC Friday Night Movie, This House Possessed was up against the CBS juggernaut The Dukes of Hazzard/Dallas, and NBC offered up…oh never mind. We were all watching the Dukes and the Ewings, okay? Is that what you want to hear? Fine. But I suppose there had to be some people who were repulsed at the...

Scream Factory recently gifted us genre fans a double dose of creature feature terrors with their Blu-ray releases of the killer rat flick Deadly Eyes and George P. Cosmatos’ hugely underrated deep sea horror film Leviathan. While both films aren’t necessarily well-known amongst more casual fans, it’s great to see Scream put such great effort into their presentations for each of these cult classics.
For those who haven’t seen it before, Deadly Eyes (or Rats)is a rather ridiculous (but wonderfully so) early ‘80s nature-run-amok story that plays up the concerns and dangers of modern urban society by way of roided-out killer rat infestations that have a penchant for human flesh. The film takes its premise very seriously, but it’s the use of Daschunds in rat costumes that has given Deadly Eyes something of an unintentional comedic spin, making for a rather uneven horror film.

For the second day of our Stan Winston Week celebration, I wanted to shine the spotlight on another monster movie that I’ve always enjoyed, but it never seemed to get as much love as I thought it should- George P. Cosmatos’ Leviathan. It’s a movie that wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was endlessly entertaining all the same, featuring a top-notch ensemble and tons of wonderfully weird and creepy creature effects created by Winston and his team of artists.

There’s still so much we don’t about our oceans, especially when it comes to what lies on their floors. CBS confirms that a "Beverly Hills Cop" spin-off TV pilot has been greenlit by Sony Pictures Television, from "The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan and executive producer Eddie Murphy.
Murphy will also reprise his role as fast-talking 'Axel Foley' in the potential series as a veteran streetwise Detroit cop, who now mentors his police officer son.
"Axel is the chief of police now in Detroit," Murphy said.
Ryan will write the pilot, planned as an hour police procedural, blending action and comedy.
The original "Beverly Hills Cop' released in 1984, was directed by Martin Brest, from a story and screenplay by Daniel Petrie Jr., starring Murphy, Lisa Eilbacher, John Ashton, Judge Reinhold, and Ronny Cox :
"...'Axel Foley' (Murphy) is a young, talented, but reckless Detroit police detective who had previously been a delinquent. His latest act of attempting to catch crooks through an unauthorized cigarette smuggling sting operation goes sour...

Beverly Hills Cop will return with Eddie Murphy starring, but this time in a TV series from Murphy and Shawn Ryan, creator of The Shield. Deadline reports that the project is envisioned as a sequel to the hit film franchise which followed Axel Foley, a comical Detroit detective dealing with a very different culture of Beverly Hills. Martin Brest directed the first movie which also starred Judge Reinhold, John Ashton and Lisa Eilbacher. Apparently the series follows Foley's son who moves to Beverly Hills to escape the shadow if his legendary father where Murphy will have an "occasional" recurring guest appearance.

Okay, you see a DVD cover (or read about a film on the web) with Maud Adams, Fred Williamson, Persis Khambatta and Lance Henrikson in the cast and you figure it has to be a decent bit of cheese. Well, check your expectations at the door, because Deadly Intent is intent on being a deadly dull cinematic experience.
Released on video in 1989, the story focuses on the trials of Laura Keaton (Lisa Eilbacher). She’s married to Raymond (Lance Henrikson), an adventurer who collects rare artifacts and is not above screwing over his partners. When the film opens, we see him beat a member of his most recent expedition (Harley, played by Solly Marx) senseless in order to walk out of the jungle with a massive diamond.

Has it really been 27 years since Eddie Murphy became a mega-star with a little comedy called "Beverly Hills Cop?"
The movie became the highest-grossing film of 1984—yes, making even more than "Ghostbusters"— and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. And of course you couldn't escape the comedy's radical soundtrack, which featured hits like the Pointer Sisters' "Neutron Dance," Glenn Frey's "The Heat Is On" and the ubiquitous synth theme "Axel F."
This Blu-ray debut is simply the best the movie has ever looked or sounded at home.
"Beverly Hills Cop" could have been a drastically different movie with Mickey Rourke or Sylvester Stallone in the lead (both were considered), but the role of Axel Foley ultimately went to the rising "Saturday Night Live" star Murphy, who was already on a big-screen tear with 1982's "48 Hrs" and '83's "Trading Places." But "Cop" would be his solo star-making vehicle.

We take a look back at Leviathan, a sci-fi horror hotchpotch of Alien, The Thing and Jaws, in which Peter Weller takes on a vodka-fuelled fish monster…
As 80s B-movies go, Leviathan surely boasts one of the coolest casts of the decade. Even on paper, a film that stars RoboCop, Colonel Trautman out of the Rambo movies, one of the hapless villains out of Home Alone and its sequel, plus Ghostbusters’ Winston Zeddemore sounds great. As does its premise, which is essentially a schlocky rip-off of Alien and The Thing.
One of a flotilla of undersea sci-fi thrillers to drift out of Hollywood in the decade (see also James Cameron’s flashier The Abyss, Roger Corman’s Lord Of The Deep and Sean S Cunningham’s DeepStar Six, to name a few), Leviathan was the product of the late Florentine director George Pan Cosmatos, whose work also included train-based disaster flick The Cassandra Crossing,...
