Sold, a hard-hitting film about child sex trafficking based on the book by Patricia McCormick, has been garnering rave reviews at film festivals all over the world. This award winning film, directed by Jeffrey D Brown tells the unforgettable story of a girl who risks everything for freedom after being trafficked from her mountain village in Nepal to a brothel in India.
One of the coolest things is that the film is being used as a conduit for change and to raise awareness and money to help eradicate this human rights tragedy. One of the main campaigns they have going on now is at Indiegogo (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sold-a-film-about-child-trafficking#/). With the money they raise there, the makers are not only going to get the film released in as many theaters as possible in March of 2016, but also to support the effort to rescue and rehabilitate children that were trafficked.

Powerful messages, stunning cinematography and authentic performances – 2014 was a good year for independent (indie) cinema. Here is a list of some of our favourites which are worth catching if you missed them.
Ilai (Leaf)
Director Rajiv Reddy’s film traced the journey of a young homeless girl in India, Chennai. Ilai was a good exploration of human emotion, survival and regeneration. The performances were outstanding and natural. Profoundly, the protagonist returns to the same place that she had started off at at the beginning of the film; however, this time she sees the world with different eyes. The film highlights how experiences impact the human soul. We saw this at the London Indian Film Festival and our reviewer wrote, “At times, the cinematography will have you spell bound. Artistic shots of the sun and the streets make this film a visual treat: for instance, a particular shot of the heat...

[This review is taken from the London premiere, as part of the 5th annual London Film Festival, featuring a special Q&A with the director, producer and actress Gillian Anderson].
Sold is based on the award winning 2006 book by Patricia McCormick, brought to the screen by first time director Jeffrey D Brown. The story is the single tale of a young girl called Laxmi from Nepal, who is sold into sexual slavery and trafficked into India. However, these facts and figures put into context just how many Laxmi’s there are worldwide:
* There are 5.5 million people trafficked each and every year
* 20,000 of these are children from Nepal
* The sex slave trade is a $1.5 billion dollar annual industry
* It is the 2nd highest illegal trade in the world
In the words of the director, Sold is intended more as a movement, rather than simply a film. It was inspired by the award winning documentary ‘Born into Brothels’ (based in Calcutta) and by films such as Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay. If you know, or loved either of those, or films of those backdrops,...

First a video
There may be no human rights issue in the modern world that is harder to visualize than the enslavement and sale of children, but that is story told in Sold, which is now having its European premiere at the London Indian Film Festival after opening in Los Angles earlier this year. Based on Patricia McCormick’s book of the same title and compiled based on real-life stories, Sold is a hard-hitting but hope filled saga of a young girl named Lakshmi who is sold into a prison brothel. Through her eyes, we experience her horrors but also the moments of goodness and hope that give her the courage to ultimately escape. It is a powerful tale, and the film and the issues it exposes has changed the lives of everyone involved.

There are some films that are just more than the images onscreen and Sold is one of those films. It not only takes you on the journey of Lakshmi, a thirteen-year-old Nepali girl who is sold into prostitution in India, and her tale of survival, escape and hope, it also puts you in the middle of the global issue of human trafficking.
Sold, based on the book by Patricia McCormick, was directed by Jeffrey D Brown and produced by Jane Charles. The film also had noted actress Emma Thompson on board as exectuive producer. Featuring Gillian Anderson and David Arquette, the film also boasts a cast that includes Seema Biswas, Sushmita Mukerjee, Tillotama Shome, Parambrata Chatterjee, Priyanka Bose, Ankur Vikal and many others. Sold has been creating a buzz and moving people to act at festivals in La and Albuquerque and the next stop is the London Indian Film Festival.

Showcasing as the Opening Night film for the London Indian Film Festival is Sold, which tells the story of one girl who becomes a victim of human trafficking. Set in India and Nepal, where many such stories take place, Sold is about an extraordinary thirteen year old girl named Lakshmi. To her horror and ours she is sold into prostitution. Though she has lost her freedom and must cope with degradation at the hands of both clients and captors, Lakshmi retains her personal sense of honor and dignity. Lakshmi begins to put a plan in motion, and hopes to become one of the lucky ones to break the chains and escape – but first she must be willing to risk her life. It is the indomitability of her spirit that forms the heart of Sold.

Ugly sandals. We admit, the name alone doesn't sound entirely appealing. But there may just be something to this trend after all. We don't know how or when it happened, but futuristic Birkenstocks are starting to fall under the category of being "so ugly it's cool." We were shocked too. The look was all over the runway this season, playing a pivotal part in both Prada and Miu Miu's 2014 collections. So we have to ask: Are women starting to replace style with comfort? While we are struggling to support the idea of being seen in public with what looks to be a pair of orthopedic flip-flops, here are the four sandals that we would stick our feet in this season. Jeffrey Campbell has been...

Los Angeles -- Three weeks ago, Clint Eastwood shared the spotlight with a single chair.
On Wednesday night, he shared it with more than a dozen.
The 82-year-old Oscar winner walked the press gauntlet at the Westwood premiere of his latest film "Trouble With the Curve" – with 16 empty chairs right behind him.
When it was pointed out to him the Oscar winner chucked as he quickly and clearly got the reference.
"Oh my God, yes," he said, with a laugh.
On Aug. 30, Eastwood stood on stage at the Republican National Convention berating an empty chair, representing President Barack Obama.
The chairs were simply set dressing: bleacher seats lined up along the green carpet at the premiere for "Trouble With the Curve," a family drama about a fading baseball-scout father played by Eastwood and his estranged daughter, played by Amy Adams. They provide the film's real action, while the game is simply a backdrop.

Jeffrey Campbell Lolitas. 10-inch Noritaka Tatehana platforms. Alexander McQueen…um, lobster feets. Do you guys remember a time when Lady Gaga wasn’t wear gigantic platform freak boots every time she left the house? It’s hard to believe it, but such a time existed. Personally, we’re ready for that time to be now…again. After watching Gaga struggle to navigate the stairs of a Sydney dock this weekend, we are asking, nay pleading, that Mother Monster give this style a rest. She doesn’t have to put on loafers, but just some other kind of footwear to mix it up once in a while. Anything! As our look at Gaga’s past footwear proves, she has done pretty much everything she can with this stagger-inducing look. More than everything, really:

My Dear Reader,
By now you may have heard word of a man they call Seth Grahame-Smith. He is the author of book titled Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and a born patriot of this great Union. In the event that word has not reached you of yet, I hope this letter finds you well and in good time.
Mr. Grahame-Smith is a man of 36 and the writer of scholarly guide books on a fellow named Spider-Man and something called ‘Zombie Survival.’ He has also written books, of New York Times bestseller legend. Some folk have taken to calling them “mash-ups,” and I do recall one named Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Word has it that his latest book, Unholy Night, tells of Three Wise Magi and the Lord himself. I fear the Hail Marys I should earn if I were to read it.

For Etta James I wanted Joshua to look super classy. A three-piece suit was in order, but I wanted to give it a little twist. The white stitch detail on the black jacket with the gray double-breasted vest gave it the fashionable twist I was looking for! For "Imagine," Joshua began with a white blazer with a crystallized collar, but I decided to save that for the finale. Nigel Lythgoe (AI's executive producer) asked for a more demure style.

She's already five months pregnant and definitely showing! Should she be wearing five-inch heels? The Jersey Shore guidette is known for her wild antics, but now that Snooki is more than halfway through her pregnancy, should she be wearing shoes that look more like giant ice skates than they do shoes? Sure, Snooki's Jeffrey Campbell shoes are cute, but her recent Twitter photo has us a little concerned. Here's how the 24-year-old's shoes measure up: The "Glide-lo" is made with leather, a rubber sole, a 7-inch shaft, 3.5-inch platform, and a startling five-inch heel! What ever happened to sensible flats? HollyMoms, would you wear these shoes while pregnant? Hollie Cavanagh
I wanted Hollie to be perfect this week. The judges and Jimmy have been so hard on her, so I wanted to soften her up with this quaint frock. I love her giant diamond ring bracelet; I wanted America to fall in love again with this sweetheart.
(Left) For Hollie's performance of Pink's "Perfect," I styled her in a white Jovani dress and Steve Madden shoes. (Jennifer Lopez admired, "You look beautiful tonight, Hollie.") The look was topped off with Bebe earrings and a bracelet from Prb Studios, Private Collection.

Renee loves fashion -- and it shows -- but she tells HollywoodLife.com it's important to keep it all in perspective. Renee Olstead couldn't have looked any less like her Secret Life of the American Teenager character April 10 at Nylon's 13th anniversary celebration in Hollywood. She looked amazing in an Opening Ceremony dress, paired with a Comme de Garcon jacket and Jeffrey Campbell shoes — but it might surprise her fans to learn that Renee, who describes her personal style as "quirky," has some very strong opinions when it comes to fashion's place in our lives. "I love fashion, and I love dressing up, but I don't think it's a necessity," says Renee, who regularly blogs for The Huffington Post about issues affecting teens and young adults. "I think we need to remind people they aren't their handbags. It doesn't speak to what kind of person you are or what your values are.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart Breaking Dawn FX
Twilight fans know that bringing Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight to the big screen have required a fair share of special effects. Movie wizards have allowed giant wolves to share scenes with humans and vampires. They’ve given us glimpses and vampires, made of organic marble, who shimmer when sunlight hits them. They’ve utilized wires to make vampires kick butt in fast moving fight sequences. They’ve even made Kristen Stewart look like a sickly, bruised, pregnant woman. Well, you might not know it, but even more mundane areas required a touch from FX masters. Take a look at some behind the scenes video from Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, part one.
According to Spin VFX supervisor Jeff Campbell, the Cullen house existed on a sound stage. Who knew? So, each and every window had to be set up with a green screen.

New Twilight Breaking Dawn Spin VFX behind the scenes clip released online. Spin VFX recently dropped this new "Behind The Scenes" video (below),which basically features some of the more intense scenes of Breaking dawn part 1 with K-Stew talking in the background as Bella, along with some wild music. It's reportedly a new behind the green screen video, but it just looks like another trailer to me with crazy music added to it. Anyways, I'll let you guys be the judge. They definitely make it seem more dramatic with all the theatrical music added to it. Check it out, below. Jeff Campbell from VFX revealed what went into shooting these Breaking Dawn scenes. He said that they added backgrounds to all the sound stage green screen windows on the main set of the Cullen House. They didn't have actual glass in the windows of the set,and many shots required...

The Art of FX has a very interesting interview with Spin VFX, the special effects team which was responsible for many of the background shots in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1. Here they talk about their involvement with the film, what their contributions were, and the enormous volume of shots that they worked on. Check it all out below:
What have you done on this show?
Jeff Campbell – VFX Supervisor // Spin’s primary contribution on this film was to add the backgrounds to all the sound stage green screen windows on the main set of the Cullen House. With no actual glass in the windows of the set, many shots required the addition of room reflections and/or character reflections. Both character and room reflection elements were created entirely in CG and animated to match their live action counterpart. We had 600 shots to do in a few months.
How did you manage the different reflections?
Eric Doiron – Compositing Supervisor // There was a wide shot of Bella surrounded by medical equipment. The room featured large windows on two sides, which meant that we had to assemble a wide background environment. Production had shot extensive exterior tiles surrounding the Cullen House from every possible angle and at different times of the day. We modeled all of the interior furniture and created digital doubles for Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson for use as reflection objects. These were carefully animated to match the actions of their real life counterparts. Finally, the interior room environment was reflected from Hdri images of the set. In the end all of the pieces came together seamlessly for a completely believable shot.

Think back to when the first caveman and cavewoman were sitting around in their cave, bored and lonely. We wonder if they envisioned the sheer magnitude of the decision they were about to make.
Fast forward to 2012 and 2 people has become 7 billion. According to the United Nations, the world population will reach 7 billion by the end of the month. Sadly, no one is celebrating as it has taken only 12 years to jump from 6 billion to 7 billion. With rapid growth like this, our planet is inching dangerously close to exhausting both space and resources. Jeffrey D. Sachs, director of the Earth Institute, laments the asymptotic population climb:
"This is a crowded planet. This is trouble, frankly..."
Oh boy. Is it time to talk about creepy population control techniques a la "Logan's Run" or "The Lottery?" Thankfully, Sachs has a more humane idea -- reduce infant mortality. But wouldn't that increase the population?...
