Sweet Trash
(1970, Dir: John Haynes)
“Some people are born to be Sweet Trash”
Michael (Duncan McLeod, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls) is a down on his luck drunken longshoreman whose life takes a weird and potentially deadly twist when he clashes with Dan (William Connors in his only role), a loan shark with a thirst for blood as big as his hunger for money. After losing big at one of Dan’s back room card games, Michael gets an opportunity to settle his $6,000 debt by joining Dan’s operation, but ultimately turns it down. This leads him to have his hand roughed up by a couple of heavies. After taking some drastic measures, Michael is forced to flea for his life. Does he go to Mexico or Columbia? No, he fleas to Coney Island of all places where he meets a seductive blonde carnival girl and then gets seduced...

From Bananaman to Grange Hill, join us in a spot of TV nostalgia as we celebrate 50 great 1980s kids' TV theme songs...
There comes a time to turn away from the horrors of the world and retreat underneath the soft, comforting duvet of nostalgia. That time is Friday. That metaphorical duvet is below.
Here are fifty of the best kids’ TV theme songs (spread over two pages and in arbitrary order) of the 1980s. Some, like Alan Hawkshaw’s distinctive Grange Hill intro, are unarguable classics of the era, while others, like Mike Harding's Count Duckula, only started in the late-eighties and spent the rest of their run in the next decade.
Obviously, there being only 50 on this list, we may have missed out your favourite (deliberately or otherwise). Let us know if so, but remember that links may take a while to appear in the comments thread because...

The lineup for the Telluride Film Festival, which begins tomorrow, has just been released. For the first time since the launch of this blog, Spout will not be covering Telluride this year, so I've quickly scanned the lineup and picked out some highlights that you should try to check out if you're in town: The one thing that I'm most disappointed to miss is a tribute to painter/film critic Manny Farber, who died last summer, in the form of a screening of Jean Renoir's Toni followed by a panel featuring Greil Marcus, Jean-Pierre Gorin, Kent Jones, Robert Polito, Robert Walsh and Patricia Patterson. This alone seems a fair trade off for altitude sickness. Disco And Atomic War: The big surprise find (for me, at least) at this year's Cannes market, I wrote about Jaak Kilm's documentary on the role Western pop culture played in the crumbling of the...
