What would you do if you couldn't remember the day you almost died?
The new Apple TV+ drama series Surface aims to answer that question.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays a woman named Sophie who is left with severe memory loss after falling into the ocean.
Everyone wants her to believe she tried to kill herself, but Sophie has questions.
“But if my life was so perfect, why did I try to end it?” she wonders.
It's a logical question, and if the trailer is any indication, this will be a big psychological thriller with more questions than answers.
According to the description, Sophie is "a woman who has suffered a traumatic head injury that has left her with extreme memory loss, believed to be a result of a suicide attempt."

“If my life was so perfect, why did I try to end it?”
Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars in and executive produces the psychological thriller “Surface,” premiering on AppleTV+ July 29. The drama series is the latest Apple-produced show alongside Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company. “I May Destroy You” Emmy-nominated director Sam Miller helms four episodes of the series, including the pilot, and also executive produces the series; actress Jennifer Morrison, Kevin Sullivan, and Tucker Gates also directed episodes. Veronica West created the eight-episode series.
“Surface” centers on a botched suicide gone wrong. Mbatha-Raw plays a woman who is believed to be named Sophie, despite her ID saying otherwise, who jumped (fell?) off a boat in the San Francisco Bay. Sophie now has amnesia and struggles to recount the moments before her “accident” as a conspiracy unravels before her.
“Do you know what it feels like to not remember anything?...

“Swimming with Sharks” has the makings of a breakout streaming series. There’s identifiable young stars in Kiernan Shipka and Finn Jones, and a strong performance from Diane Kruger. Then there is Donald Sutherland in what might be his most repulsive villain role yet: a Hollywood patriarch who delivers from his literal deathbed some of the show’s most jaw-dropping moments of sexual exploitation (and there are a lot).
Delivering the pulpy indulgence of “You,” the palace intrigue of “House of Cards,” and a dick-pics-per-episode ratio bested only by “Minx,” it would be right at home on many streamers. But — surprise! — when the show’s eight-episode first season drops Friday, it will be available exclusively on the Roku Channel, for free, to the 60 million people who use the company’s boxes, sticks, and smart TVs in any given month.

Oh, what hatred of a toxic boss can drive you to do.
Kiernan Shipka stars as bright-eyed intern Lou Simms, who starts her apprenticeship at Hollywood production studio Fountain Pictures to learn from the best of the best, CEO Joyce Holt (Diane Kruger), in “Swimming with Sharks.” Yet Lou’s dreams of stardom seem to come with a darker edge as her complex plot against Joyce unravels. It was no accident that Lou was selected to join Fountain Pictures, and she’s going to do more than just get her feet wet in the secrets of the studio.
Part “The Assistant,” part “All About Eve,” the Roku Channel original warns that “proximity to greatness is intoxicating”…and deadly.
“Swimming with Sharks” debuted its trailer during Roku’s first-ever SXSW event. The series is set to premiere on April 15, with all six 30-minute episodes streaming for free on The Roku Channel.

“You have no brain. No judgement calls are necessary. What you think means nothing. What you feel means nothing. You are here for me. You are here to protect my interests and to serve my needs.”
That’s the iconic line spewed by a toxic movie producer to his rattled assistant in “Swimming With Sharks,” the 1994 George Huang film. Within the industry, the movie has been referenced as hyperrealistic and the subject of many inside jokes. Today, however, Variety can exclusively reveal the first trailer for a full-stop reboot of the property from creator Kathleen Robertson.

Although Jason Bateman returned as a director on “Ozark” for its third season, he cannot repeat his win, as he is instead submitting the pilot of “The Outsider,” which is next to “Ozark” on the long ballot.

Quibi has given a series order to a series adaptation of the 1994 movie “Swimming With Sharks,” the company announced on Wednesday.
Kathleen Robertson will write and executive produce the Lionsgate series, which is described as “a contemporary update of George Huang’s original film that both celebrates and skewers the Hollywood studio system. In this adaptation, a young female assistant is at the center of a studio filled with manipulators, schemers and intrigue, but little do they know she is poised to outwit them all.”
Released in 1994, the original “Swimming With Sharks” film starred Spacey as Buddy Ackerman, an influential movie mogul who turns out to be the boss from hell when he hires Guy (Frank Whaley), a naive young writer, as his assistant.

Rob Riggle had just left “Saturday Night Live” but hadn’t done much acting when he booked a gig on “The Office.” It was the show’s second season, and was just hitting its stride with fans, when Riggle landed the one-time role of “Captain Jack” on the now iconic episode “Booze Cruise.”
“It was very early,” Riggle recalled of the 2006 episode. “I was still very green, I had not done much work. My first job in show business [after leaving military active duty] was ‘Saturday Night Live.’ That ‘Office’ episode was between ‘SNL’ and ‘The Daily Show.’ I was just thrilled to be there. You could tell they all liked each other. They appreciated each other, they enjoyed each others’ work.”
Riggle remembers spending time with stars Steve Carell and John Krasinski, plus guest star Amy Adams, as they shot scenes on a boat in Long Beach. Yet, it’s not Riggle’s favorite TV episode of all time.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for the “Bates Motel” series finale: Season 5, Episode 10, “The Cord.”]
A cold dose of reality didn’t sit well with Norman, so “Bates Motel” gave him the fantasy instead. Looking back on Season 5, it’s clear now that Norman (Freddie Highmore) was being forced to choose between the two all along: A world without Norma (Vera Farmiga), his mother, was not one he could continue living in without a major lifestyle change. He had to accept she was dead or be allowed to indulge his delusion that she was still alive.
When push came to shove — or, to be more accurate, knife came to gun — Norman chose the delusion. After suffering a beating at the hands of Alex Romero (Nestor Carbonell), Norman turned the tables on his captor and killed him with a heavy stone to the head. He passed out next to the barely covered corpse of his mother, and dreamt of when they first took over the Bates Motel.

“Bates Motel” could not exist without “Psycho,” but soon it could feel like the other way around. Part of the brilliance within Kerry Ehrin’s deep exploration of Alfred Hitchcock’s characters is how even in the modern day — and even while always promising an ending independent of the film’s narrative — it feels as though we’re being given crucial backstory to a character we only came to know as a pervert, murderer, and psychopath — in that order. Fifty-seven years later, “Bates Motel” is filling in the details by fleshing out Norman’s motivations, psychological state, and ultimate descent into madness.

The final season is steeped in more Hitchcockian lore than ever. There’s a subtle nod to the iconic shower scene in the first episode, when Norman mentions how he just finished installing new curtains. We get our first glimpse of Norma’s permanent residence, or at least...

The fourth season of Bates Motel ended on an utterly haunting note, so it's no surprise that the first teaser video for the show's fifth and final season is the stuff of nightmares.
Press Release: New York, NY – January 9, 2017 – The haunting fifth and final season of the critically acclaimed drama, “Bates Motel,” from writers and executive producers Kerry Ehrin (“Friday Night Lights,” “Parenthood”) and Carlton Cuse (“Lost, “The Strain”) will premiere on Monday, February 20 at 10Pm Et/Pt on A&E. Fan favorite and Emmy-nominated actress Vera Farmiga returns for double duty as executive producer while also reprising her role as ‘Mother’ who is very much alive and well but only in the twisted, complicated mind of ‘Norman Bates’ played by Freddie Highmore. It must be obvious that you shouldn't read these reviews if you're Amazon-Priming Angel for the first time; but if you are, you really shouldn't read this one.
For the first few minutes, Hero looks set to be something of a light-hearted romp. We fade up on an imaginary advert in which Cordelia pictures a great promotion for Angel Investigations – complete with Angel looking straight into the camera, announcing: “You can count on me – I'm the Dark Avenger!” It's pure comedy silliness, only exaggerated by Doyle recoiling at the thought of his boss dressing up in a superhero costume.
The daftness continues as Cordy elects to opt for the 'common man' approach. Armed with only a camcorder and hastily rigged cue cards, Cordy's chosen her representative for Angel Investigations. Doyle's stumbling, fluffed attempts at enticing punters to Angel's business isn't exactly award-winning material. What with the low rats and the weasel factor,...

How exactly do you define fear? It's not something that can be broken down and analysed in seconds, since one man's fear is another man's shrug. Terrified of spiders? Well, someone, somewhere is clutching a spider in his or her clutched hands with nonchalant weariness as they creep to the door to deposit this Fiend Of Eight Legs in the outside world. Scared of the dark? Try reconciling that with miners, stargazers or even club DJs, squinting against the gloom to make sure they don't stick their scratchy copy of Bombalurina's Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini on the turntable. I've read accounts of people with morbid fears of baked beans, crowd singing and water – which just proves that when it comes to fears and phobias, us humans are a complex bunch.

Bates Motel Episode 202
“Shadow of a Doubt”
Written By: Kerry Ehrin
Directed By: Tucker Gates
Original Airdate: 10 March 2014
In This Episode…
Bradley is staying in Norman’s basement. He wakes her, insisting she tell him what happened. She resists, but Norman won’t help her without honesty. “I killed the guy that killed my dad.” That is enough for Norman. He buys her hair dye and some other toiletries; steals some money from Dylan; and buys her a bus ticket. He promises to drive her to the bus stop, two hours outside of town.
Norma asks her gynecologist about blackouts. (Who the hell wants to have a conversation during a pelvic exam?!) The doctor explains that if there are no physical reasons for the blackouts, it could be indicative of a mental illness. This worries Norma and she goes to the library and checks out their entire selection of books...

Bates Motel Season 2, Episode 2 “Shadow of a Doubt”
Written by Kerry Ehrin
Directed by Tucker Gates
Airs Monday nights at 9pm Et on A&E
I suppose if a show is going to dive swim in the oceans of ridiculousness, there’s no point in wading in the shallow end; “Shadow of a Doubt” takes the bat shit world of Bates Motel to a new level, adding in ludicrous marijuana mulers (who shoot teenage dimebag sellers, apparently), a completely misguided drug war, and a teenage girl who leaves a note for the boy she spent most of the first season ignoring (after she slept with him, of course). And this is all before we get to the single oddest thing in Bates Motel‘s short existence: Norma Bates emotionally singing “Maybe This Time.”
Unfortunately, it’s all just a little too silly for its own good – and more importantly, none...
