The third installment in the "Men in Black" series is in theaters now, returning the duo of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones to their familiar roles as Agents J and K, who patrol the Earth ensuring that alien visitors follow our laws, and that the general public never finds out about them.
What may not be as familiar to many people is that Agents J and K, and the agency they work for, originated not on the big screen as many may assume, but in the pages of a comic book series several years before the original "Men in Black" film was released. With that in mind, we're going to take a look back at the original "Men in Black" comics, and find out just how similar — or different — the source material may be from the films you know and love.

So what's next for the channel that has given us plenty of things that have gone bump in the night along with more CG monsters than anyone could possibly keep up with? Read on for details of Syfy's "upfront" presentation.
As you'd expect from a network named Syfy, several of these projects are more sci-fi than horror, but we thought we'd pass on all the news anyway:

Immortals co-producer Mark Canton is rescuing the adaptation of comic series Atlantis Rising from certain death. He'll be working with the story's creator Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and Platinum Studios — who recently re-acquired the film rights to the property — for what the producer hopes will be his next big comic-based franchise. The would-be action-thriller is set in the mythical lost city of Atlantis, which is uncovered when the military investigates a series of strange deep-sea earthquakes. The intrusion escalates into total war — because you know how those extraterrestrial civilizations hate having their Utopia messed with. Canton recently spoke to Variety and was hopeful about his prospects: "Atlantis Rising...

Those who've spent the past four years waiting for a big-screen adaptation of independent comic Bone may finally be rewarded.
Pj Hogan (Muriel's Wedding, My Best Friend's Wedding, Peter Pan) has been hired to direct a film version of Jeff Smith's highly-regarded stories.
The comic ran from 1991 to 2004 and followed three cousins - Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone - who become lost in a strange valley and caught up in an ancient conflict with an evil force called the Lord of the Locusts.
Warner Bros picked up the screen rights back in 2008 and, according to HeatVision, it's now been resuscitated.
Along with the hiring of a director, Patrick Sean Smith has been appointed to write the new film. Animal Logic, an Australian animation house behind Happy Feet 2 and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, will be involved in the 3D computer-animated movie, which is hoped...

Coming off the respectable financial success of Immortals, Mark Canton is using some fresh clout for a comic adaptation. As Variety tells us, he and Platinum Studios are looking toward Atlantis Rising, a comic book series that, back in 2008, was set up at DreamWorks for Len Wiseman to direct. Now that Platinum has regained the rights, they’re planning to reboot the project “with a new look and story.” (How do you reboot something that never was?)
The five-issue miniseries, created by Platinum head Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, centered on “an undersea civilization that began over 10,000 years ago and whose presence is unknown to the surface population.” After that irresponsible polluting of ours damages the people of Atlantis, war is sparked between us and them.
With that, Canton sees “the franchise potential of Men in Black,” and the guy should have some idea — he was the one who greenlit it for Sony years and years ago.

The producer behind such successful comic book adaptations as 300 and Men in Black, Mark Canton, has just announced that he's planning to help bring another comic book property to the big screen. Platinum Studios - not to be confused with Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes - recently re-acquired the film rights to Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's Atlantis Rising and are hoping to turn it into the next big franchise. Yep, that was the word they used, franchise. How about we get one film right first? Coming Soon first reported about this impending adaptation from Platinum Studios earlier today and the production company owns thousands of comic book characters with Atlantis Rising being the latest from their international library to be plucked for film adaptation. However, the author isn't taking on the project alone as he's teamed up with Canton in order to bring the series to the big screen. Canton...

This one was previously set up at DreamWorks, being produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, based on Platinum's chief and creator Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's work. Variety reports that Platinum is taking a new approach, giving it a reboot, with a new look and story. Cowboys & Aliens from Platinum Studios, was distributed by Universal, and was not well-received at the box office, despite being quite entertaining, and holding a well-known cast, including Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde and Sam Rockwell. This year has seen a fair number of superhero films and other comic book adaptations on the big screen, including two sparkly new releases from Marvel and a reinvigoration of the X-Men franchise that surprised many jaded fans.
But which were the heroes and which were the zeros? Here we take a look back at this year's releases and check out the facts and figures for each one.
The year began with The Green Hornet, a crimefighter who originated in 1930s radio serials before moving into film serials, TV and comics.
After a couple of other studios had earlier attempted to get a new movie off the ground, Sony delivered its action-comedy take with Seth Rogen in the title role, Asian pop star Jay Chou as sidekick Kato and Michel Gondry directing.
The end result was a lot of fun, though with too much of Rogen's dorky comedy, too many...

Although it is not quite the epic .Indy Meets Bond. adventure that was hyped, Cowboys & Aliens is an entertaining film and fun ride pretty much from start to finish. The film does require the audience to shut the brain off and doesn.t aim to be more than its titles suggests. The film was directed by Iron Man's Jon Favreau (who seems very comfortable in this kind of big scope picture) and based on Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's comic from Platinum Studios. It featured several writers (not always a good sign) including the screenplay skills of Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof, Mark Fergus (who also penned the screen story), Hawk Ostby (also screen story), and screen story chores...

Chicago – For all of its ambition and integrity, Jon Favreau’s “Cowboys & Aliens” is a dull genre exercise devoid of charm or wit. Whereas “Iron Man” got a great deal of mileage out of Robert Downey Jr.’s deadpan persona, this sci-fi/western hybrid is marred by its two one-note leads: the morose Daniel Craig and the snarly Harrison Ford. Viewers expecting a “Bond meets Indy” lark a la “The Last Crusade” will be sorely disappointed.
By populating his 1873 town with legends like Keith Carradine, Favreau aimed to make a straightforward western that just happened to collide with an alien thriller. The first juxtaposition of sleek spaceships against the primitive setting produces a kinetic thrill, but the novelty wears off quickly. The plot’s high concept is no more revolutionary than the genre hodgepodge in “Super 8,” and at least that film had an endearing coming-of-age tale to make up for its mediocre aliens.

One of the most disappointing box office turnouts of the summer has arrived on Blu-ray and DVD. Despite a solid ensemble cast, intense action sequences and cool visual effects Cowobys & Aliens failed to find it’s footing. Hopefully home audiences will enjoy the disc versions more and help increase the overall box office take.
Cowboys & Aliens would be better, if it had focused more heavily on the western elements in my opinion. I love sci-fi, but the science fiction elements seemed to miss the mark. I found myself just thinking of the aliens as more of group of outlaws than the aliens that they were. The best part of the story is the relationship shown between Harrison Ford’s character and his son played by Paul Dano. I especially loved how Adam Beach’s character seems acts like more of a son in the movie. This dyanmic and relationship is...

As if Cowboys & Aliens wasn't already enough of a disappointment for Universal, here comes some more bad news. TMZ reports that an Austin-based writer named Steven John Busti has filed suit against DreamWorks, Universal Pictures, and producer Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, claiming that they stole the idea for the summer tentpole movie from a comic story he wrote back in 1995. Here's how it all breaks down: Busti says he had the idea for a story about cowboys squaring off against aliens back in 1994, then actually published a story called "Cowboys & Aliens" in a 1995 issue of the comic Bizarre Fantasy. If that was the extent of it, you could easily chalk it up as a case of parallel development or coincidence, but Busti claims there's more to it. He points to a 1994 issue of Comic Shop News that ran a feature story about his Cowboys & Aliens story...in the same issue that...

Comic book writer Steve Busti is suing the producers of summer blockbuster Cowboys & Aliens, insisting he came up with the concept behind the film.
Busti's Cowboys and Aliens tale was published in a comic book called Bizarre Fantasy in 1994, and he claims his story is too similar to the film's plot to be a coincidence.
According to a lawsuit filed today in Texas, and obtained by TMZ.com, Busti reveals his comic concept was also featured in the publication Comic Shop News - on the same page as an article about Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, the producer of the 2011 film.
He is suing for copyright infringement.

If you follow our Twitter feed (@CinemaSpy) you’ll know that a couple of days ago we promised you the specs for the December 6 Blu-ray and DVD release of Cowboys & Aliens.
Forgive our tardiness but our stagecoach was delayed a day by a washed out road and the 1G wi-fi at the nearest saloon was spotty at best. Hence, it’s taken us a bit longer than expected to reach the best Western (Ok, bad joke). Anyway, here are the full details.
According to Universal, the Blu-ray combo pack release will include and extended edition of the John Favreau-directed sci-fi western while the DVD will have the theatrical version. As far as we can tell, the extended edition includes roughly 17 minutes of extra footage but we’ve no idea what that shows. As for Bonus Features, here’s the list:

Cowboys & Aliens will be arriving on home video on December 6, 2011. Universal Home Entertainment will be releasing the movie as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack which will include a variety of bonus features as well as a digital copy of the movie.
Directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man and Iron Man 2) and starring Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace), Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), Olivia Wilde (Tron Legacy), the movie grossed only $100 million dollars at the box office this past summer -- even with producing power like Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer behind it.
Set in 1873 on the western frontier, Craig plays gunslinger Jake Lonergan who awakens with no memory of his past and a strange metal bracelet attached to his wrist. In the small town of Absolution, Lonergan encounters Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde (Ford) and discovers that the two have a bitter past history.

Daniel Craig, Cowboys & Aliens Cowboys & Aliens should collect between $15-17 million on Friday for a $40-45 million weekend, according to early, rough estimates found at Deadline.com. The Hollywood Reporter, however, says that Friday figures should be close to only $13-13.5 million, which would mean about $38 million for the weekend. Either way, if budget estimates found at Deadline are correct — we're talking $160-200 million — then DreamWorks (50% of the budget), Universal (25%) and Relativity (25%) have a major box-office disappointment in their hands. For comparison's sake, Martin Campbell-Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern, an "underperformer" that cost $200 million, opened with $53.17m. The Western-sci-fi mix stars Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, and Harrison Ford, who has seen better days at the box office. Iron Man's Jon Favreau directed it, while the long list of producers and executive producers includes Favreau, Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg, and Brian Grazer. According to Deadline, more than a...

The moment I heard that Dreamworks would be producing the film adaptation of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's 2006 graphic novel Cowboys and Aliens I was probably one of the most excited fanboys in the state of Texas and that excitement grew exponentially as it was announced that the epically badass Daniel Craig and fan favorite hottie Olivia Wilde would be starring and comic adaptation guru Jon Favreau would be directing. Then came the greatest news of all: screen legend Harrison Ford was set to star, making the epic return to sci-fi that we have all anticipated for decades. And I am pleased to report that all of this terrific news has culminated in one seriously awesome sci-fi/western romp as kick-ass and visually impressive as we all hoped for.

"Cowboys & Aliens," the big-budget blockbuster film starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, hits theaters today. Many fans are likely aware that the film has been billed as based on a graphic novel, like so many other recent blockbusters. But what they may not be aware of is just how tangled and torturous a path it was for "Cowboys & Aliens" to reach the big-screen, and how very different its origins are from other comic book films.
To shed some light on that, we're taking a look at the trail this property blazed all the way to the Wild West of Hollywood.
"Cowboys & Aliens" is the brainchild of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, co-owner of Platinum Studios, a multimedia company. Rosenberg himself has his roots firmly embedded in the comic book industry, being one of the founders of Malibu Comics in 1986, an independent publisher which secured its place in comics history both by serving...

We've all known that the western has been dead for quite some while. Well, according to Blade Runner director Ridley Scott, the science fiction genre is ripe for burying, too. At least he said as much in The Sunday Times a few years back: "There’s nothing original. We’ve seen it all before. Been there. Done it."
So, accepting Scott's premise, why not combine the two corpses to create something vivid and original and very much alive?
This apparently was the intention of director Jon Favreau (Iron Man) and the three screen-story composers and five screenwriters who tackled the adaptation of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's graphic novel. They failed, however, to restore life where there was none. Cowboys and Aliens is Doa.

"Cowboys & Aliens" may be lassoing its way into theaters on Friday (July 29), but the movie's journey to the big screen began a long time ago in a galaxy ... well, not so far away.
The current incarnation of Jon Favreau's adaptation of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's 2006 graphic novel is a far cry from what the director had originally envisioned.
