TV Fanatic had the pleasure of speaking with director David Winning about Hallmark's latest Fall Into Love feature, Field Day.
Winning has a long, successful string of Hallmark movies on his resume, but charming rom-coms weren't his first foray into directing.
Making his mark in the sci-fi genre, directing episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark, Stargate: Atlantis, and Van Helsing, his resume boasts a diverse array of productions that almost seem at odds with the heartfelt Hallmark universe.
So, how did Winning find himself so far from the sci-fi realm? We talked with him about that and much more in our exclusive interview.
For more information on Field Day, please visit our exclusive clip of the delightful movie, which stars Rachel Boston, Benjamin Ayres, Shannon Chen-Kent, and Carmel Amit.

Hallmark's latest autumn offering, airing Saturday, October 14 at 8/7c on Hallmark Channel, reminds us of the very best the season has to offer. Fall colors elicit the coziness of the season, and when they talk about pumpkin, you will swear you can smell it in the air.
Field Day follows a budding female friendship forming between three moms when they find themselves volunteering for what everyone considers the worst Parent Teacher Organization (Pto) committee.
Rachel Boston, Shannon Chen-Kent, and Carmel Amit star in this movie, poised to become an annual classic.
Ask anyone, and they'll tell you that planning a school event is hard!
Not only do you want to make your school proud, but you want to be seen as competent in the eyes of your fellow school parents and cool in your kids' eyes.
Jen (Rachel Boston) and her daughter have just moved to town, so making an impression counts.

Exclusive: Great American Family has released details about its next Christmas movie featuring Lori Loughlin.
The Full House actress will star in Blessings of Christmas (working title), which will premiere as part of Great American Christmas that returns October 20. New holiday movies will premiere every Saturday and Sunday through the end of the year.
In Blessings of Christmas, Loughlin stars as renowned TV star Mandy Gilmore, who is saying goodbye to her hit culinary series, A World of Food, so she can travel the globe and dine in all 142 Michelin star restaurants. Before jetting to Paris, Mandy stops in Milwaukee with the deed to her deceased aunt’s food pantry, Angel’s Fare, recently purchased by adjacent business owner, Adam Carraway (James Tupper). It’s a simple transaction until pantry volunteer Otto Nessen (Jesse Hutch) reminds everyone that Aunt Susie’s love of cooking was actually love of feeding — which...

Van Helsing Season 4 Episode 1
“Destroy that which seeks to destroy us.”
Hopefully, the crew at SyFy’s vampire drama Van Helsing didn’t spend all its special effects and stunt budget on the season premiere because writer and showrunner Jonathan Lloyd-Walker holds nothing back in the next chapter of Vanessa Van Helsing’s hero’s journey. Season four’s “Dark Destiny” wastes no time throwing us back into the fray with a compelling cold open featuring Vanessa and Lillian Van Helsing that reminds us why we love this gritty show so much. Unfortunately, only one makes it to the end of the episode.

Houston, Texas is best known for oil and cowboys. Like most things, there is way more than meets the stereotype. My favorite Houston secret is Worldfest, a nine day international independent film festival held every April.
What is so great about it? It’s a point of pride for Houstonians because it is the oldest in the world. It was founded in August 1961 as Cinema Arts, and International Film Society. It became the international film festival it is today in April 1968. In all of this time it has been under the care of founder Hunter Todd. His goal was to create a quality film festival for independent filmmakers.
Meh, who cares how old it is. If it’s last power doesn’t impress you, here’s a short list of some of the filmmakers discovered at Worldfest:
Steven Spielberg George Lucas Ridley Scott The Coen Brothers Oliver Stone David Lynch

Hollywood is — if nothing else — a land of over-stuffed bandwagons, and as studio suits begin to tire of super-sizing fairy tales, the latest micro-trend in “let’s-try-launching-this-kind-of-franchise” appears to be feature films based on the Bible.
The first, director Darren Aronofsky’s take on Noah, just recently wrapped filming in Iceland with Russell Crowe, Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, and Anthony Hopkins. The rest of the Bible-based projects remain in some stage of development without an official greenlight, but many have A-list names hovering around them. "...welcome to 'Black Stone', known as 'The Township of Good Neighbors', but now home to something more ominous: a pack of intelligent--and deadly--genetically-modified insect wasps.

Todd (second from left) with the one book you should always return to the library on time.
Here at CinemaSpy we are not messing with the titular tome in the irreverent Canadian horror comedy Todd & The Book of Pure Evil. Clearly it can wield some powerful magic.
The witty, surreal and sometimes shocking show was a hit on the Canadian channel Space when the first season aired last year. Since then, it has also been impressing influential people who decide nominations for Canada’s Gemini Award. The list for 2011 were announced this week and Todd & The Book of Pure Evil hit a straight eight.
The Geminis are Canada’s equivalent of the Emmy Awards. They are determined annually by members of the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and other industry professionals. This year, the Gemini’s 26th, Todd & The Book of Pure Evil was named in the following categories:

With the upcoming release of Warner Bros.’ The Green Lantern this Friday, I think it’s fair to say the comic book movie has become almost annoyingly ubiquitous over the past few years – not surprising given the sub-genre’s mostly sturdy record at the box-office.
Even so, it’ll probably be a long, long time before we ever see a big-budget Hollywood film depicting the exploits of a gay superhero – a fact that of course can’t stop us from thinking about it. Following from that, below I’ve put together a list of twelve queer crusaders who I’d like to see fighting the forces of evil on the big screen, along with my fantasy casting choices for each.
Obsidian (DC)
Fantasy Casting: Luke Macfarlane

Even so, it’ll probably be a long, long time before we ever see a big-budget Hollywood film depicting the exploits of a gay superhero – a fact that of course can’t stop us from thinking about it. Following from that, below I’ve put together a list of twelve queer crusaders who I’d like to see fighting the forces of evil on the big screen, along with my fantasy casting choices for each.

*This is another in-depth review of a television series from Ed Sum.
Horror-comedy has a new name in the Canadian produced television series, "Todd and the Book of Pure Evil." When it’s mixed up early Sam Raimi style—with lots of camp and cheese—and backed up talent from the likes of show creators Craig David Wallace, Charles Picco, Anthony Leo; and fellow directors like David Winning ("Friday the 13th the TV Series," "Are You Afraid of the Dark?", "Blood Ties"), there’s a masterful chemistry that’s at work.
While some episodes are formulaic in its look at high school life, the thing that keeps people coming back for more is the strong cast of characters. Todd Smith (Alex House) is not your usual pretty boy, and nor are his friends. The shift is on the freaks and geeks.
It’s up to Todd, his best pal, Curtis...

Okay guys, it's time to find another inspiration other than Evil Dead II.I get it. I love Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell too. But Raimi took his inspiration from other movies – the Ghost Story series, for example – and it seems none of these directors bother to do their homework. In director David Winning's case, it's the vine attack scene. The Swamp Devil in question is a serial killer who was set upon by the locals and left for dead. Now the Swamp Devil is back with new tree superpowers and he's out for revenge against former sheriff...

Raise you hand if you knew that a new Sinbad movie was in production. Anyone? Anyone? Good, glad to see we're all in the same boat. This probably isn't the greatest news in the world for David Winning and the players in Sinbad The Fifth Voyage though. Apple has released the trailer for the film and not only does it look like a crappy knock off of Clash of the Titans (I'm talking 1981 Clash of the Titans), but they somehow roped Patrick Stewart into the mess as Sinbad from the future. First off, I wasn't aware that Sinbad was British, but I guess you learn something new everyday. Secondly, can Bryan Singer please make a fourth X-Men movie so that Mr. Stewart can have something legitimate to do? Check out the trailer below or in HD over at Apple. function getVideo() { var so = new SWFObject("http://cdn.springboard.gorillanation.com...

This is one of those puzzling projects about which almost no information exists, but that I'm strangely excited about. Like many of you (probably not Dustin, since he has no soul), I've got incredibly fond memories of the old genre films featuring the effects of master stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen, creator of Dynamation. The most memorable ones are the original, non-shitty Clash of the Titans, Jason and the Argonauts, Mighty Joe Young, and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. That last one is probably my favorite, and it's also the reason I'm curious about Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage.
Developed by Giant Film Flicks and directed by David Winning (who has a series of SyFy movies to his name), it's also narrated by Patrick Stewart and stars Shahin Sean Solimon as the titular Sinbad. It claims to be inspired by The Book of One Thousand and One Nights, a compilation of Middle Eastern folk tales,...

In 2003, Canada's Craig David Wallace directed a short film called Todd and the Book of Pure Evil . With co-writer Max Reid, he spun a tale of a headbanger who seeks dating advice from the devil and unleashes hell on earth to get the cheerleader he loves. Wallace is getting an opportunity to expand this short film into a television series for Canada's Space. Steve Arbuckle, who played Todd in the short, is replaced by Alex House and Frantic Films is shepherding the series. David Winning ( Stargate: Atlantis , Friday the 13th: The Series ) we're told is directing a few episodes. Shooting has begun in Winnipeg. Maggie Castle, Billy Turnbull, Melanie Leishman and Chris Leavins co-star.

The soccer ace – who is married to former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham – isn’t a fan of “crowd participation” and gets nervous when he goes to dinner with Eva Longoria Parker because she likes to get everyone involved. During an interview Us TV star George Lopez, he said: “Eva’s got this whole thing - and her husband Tony - about playing games… I get so uncomfortable with crowd participation. We were at dinner once with Tom and Katie… We sat there and everyone was like, ‘Let’s play a music game – let’s start a singing game.’ “That’s my worst nightmare. I kind of get uncomfortable with it.” David also gave George an impromptu haircut after the host asked the fashion conscious sportsman – famous for his many different cuts - for some style tips. David, 34, said: “If you want me to give you some kind of haircut -...

Well, what do you do when your last two TV series flamed out, leaving you scratching your head and wondering why the public isn't getting you like they did before? If you're Kelsey Grammer, you head to Broadway. With the ABC sitcom Hank firmly in his rear-view mirror, Grammer will star on Broadway in a revival of La Cage aux Folles.
Could Kelsey be taking advice from David Hyde Pierce, his brother Niles on Frasier? Since that series ended, David's had two hit shows on the Gay White Way, Spamalot and Curtains. The latter resulted in David winning a Tony award.
I'd like to think that Grammer's taking somebody's sage advice. La Cage is a no-brainer.

Despite their dramatic potential, ecological importance and scientific interest, swamps rarely get the good press that crystal-clear lakes, misty mountains and sun-drenched beaches do. This may be partly because so much superstition has grown up around them. Swamp monsters are popular expressions of this superstition, embodying the impression that swamps are muddy, bug-infested slime pits.
Perhaps the most famous such monster in the annals of film is the comic book character Swamp Thing. This tangle of humanoid swamp vegetation first appeared in DC Comics' House of Secrets #92 (1971) and he was later revamped for his own title. In the 1980s the comic was adapted for the film Swamp Thing. The character has also appeared in that film's sequel, The Return of Swamp Thing, and animated and live-action television series.
Contemporary with the origination of Swamp Thing was the first appearance of Marvel Comic's Man-Thing. Swamp Thing and Man-Thing had similar origin...
