Magician David Copperfield is facing allegations of drugging women before sexual encounters, groping women during live performances, and behaving inappropriately with women who were significantly younger than him — including under 18 — in a new investigative piece in The Guardian.
The story contains allegations from 16 women, spanning four decades, from the 1980s to 2014. Over half of those women said they were under 18 at the time of the alleged incidents, with the two youngest victims claiming they were 15 at the time (though there was no evidence to suggest Copperfield was aware of their...

Magician David Copperfield faces allegations of sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior made by 16 women, according to an investigation by the U.K. Guardian newspaper’s U.S. bureau.
The accusations include the illusionist having “drugged three women before he had sexual relations with them, which they felt they were unable to consent to,” according to the report. Half of the allegations made against Copperfield that date from the late 1980s to 2014 were made by women who insist they were under 18 years of age when they had encounters with the entertainer, with some women claiming they were as young as 15 years old.
Copperfield has faced allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior in the past. In 2018, the magician denied historical allegations of sexual misconduct. “I’ve lived with years of news reports about me being accused of fabricated, heinous acts, with few telling the story of the accuser getting arrested, and my innocence,...

As a movie lover, one of the most wonderful pleasures of this passion is discovering new filmmakers with their own identity, style, and message. There’s almost always something special about a feature film debut from an unknown director, but when it’s from a highly popular actor with an overwhelmingly positive public opinion, the expectations surrounding the movie inevitably change. Dev Patel directs, writes – along with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Hotel Mumbai) – produces, and stars in Monkey Man, whose story described as “John Wick in Mumbai” was deemed too heavy for the Indian audience by Netflix, prompting Jordan Peele (Get Out) to watch it, buy it, and give it a theatrical release window, so impressed he was.

Ever since it was announced in 2018, Monkey Man had a difficult journey to its release. Dev Patel’s directorial debut received setbacks due to covid restrictions, budgetary issues, and a broken hand of the writer/director/star (this last issue resulted in a change of choreography to ensure Patel could deliver fight scenes one-handed.)
Netflix acquired the film for worldwide distribution, a move which would have buried the film courtesy of a dreadful algorithm, yet that scenario was avoided courtesy of filmmaker Jordan Peele. The Get Out director acquired this film under his Monkeypaw Productions banner, intending to release the film into cinemas as part of his distribution deal with Universal Pictures. Valeria Praţa is facing a change she does not want. A life-long resident of Romania’s rural Apuseni Mountains, her home is now threatened by flooding from a poisonous lake created by a local copper mine. The sickly mud and water have already claimed much of her village, including the church where her grandparents are buried. Now as the lake draws closer to her front door, Valeria must gradually come to terms with, potentially, having to leave her beloved cow Păuna behind and moving to the city with her dog Duracell to live with her son. As she succinctly puts it: “It hurts my soul.”
Becoming invisible is an observational documentarian’s most essential trick and one that Matthäus Wörle and his cinematographer Moritz Dehler achieve with the apparent ease of David Copperfield in Wörle's debut feature. What’s all the more admirable is the way he marries this to a more interrogative approach.

It offers a compelling glimpse into the motivations and insights of a filmmaker deeply engaged with the complexities of human resilience, the transformative power of technology, and the enduring mystery of identity in the digital age.
First of all, I want to mention how much I appreciated The Fire That Took Her and your work on that.
Thank you.
That was just one of the most harrowing accounts I've ever seen, and I still think about it two years later.

Harry Potter is one of the most significant franchises across various mediums, encompassing books, movies, and games. The series features a diverse cast of characters, including Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and many others. Daniel Radcliffe took on the challenging role of Harry Potter in the film series, showcasing his talent at a young age. Jeffrey Epstein’s Brother, Mark, Believes He Was ‘Murdered,’ Doesn’t Believe He Had Blackmail Videos
The newly released list of names in disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein’s court documents features a lot of big names, but the list doesn’t impress his brother, Mark Epstein, in the slightest.
“I don’t know what to make out of these documents. I don’t know how these lists were compiled. And I have nothing to do with that, you know, and it’s not my business. What I’m concerned about is my brother’s murder,” Mark told The New York Post.
Jeffrey was accused of trafficking underaged girls before he was found dead in his New York City prison cell in an apparent suicide. A report later found that Jeffrey was given special treatment in jail, which allowed for the suicide.
Mark said that the evidence relating to his brother’s death does not correlate with suicide.

Many high-profile names have been released from previously sealed court documents related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. The newly unsealed documents, which are part of a larger group, have so far named 170 people with ties to the notorious sex offender.
Familiar names mentioned in the document include Prince Andrew and former Presidents Bill Clinton and Donald Trump.
Epstein said Clinton “likes them young,” according to one victim in her deposition released this week.
Victim Johanna Sjoberg said in a 2016 deposition that Prince Andrew put his hand on her breast as she sat on his lap at Epstein’s townhouse in 2001.
Sjoberg about Epstein’s thoughts about Clinton.
“[Epstein] said one time that Clinton likes them young, referring to girls,” she testified.
Sjoberg also said that Epstein once suggested a stop at one of Trump’s casinos in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

As news outlets race to pore over nearly a thousand pages of Jeffrey Epstein-related documents that were released Wednesday evening, several famous names are already circulating — but context is key. In the age of race-to-be-first news, and amid the rise of AI-generated online content, it’s more important than ever to read past the headlines. These people appear to have only been mentioned in Johanna Sjoberg’s deposition where she denies having met them.
Sjoberg, one of Epstein’s victims who had worked for him as a masseuse, was deposed on May 18, 2016 in connection with Virginia Giuffre’s defamation suit against Ghislaine Maxwell, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison following a conviction on charges of conspiring with Epstein to sexually abuse minors.
Sjoberg was asked if she’d met various high-profile people including Cate Blanchett, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz and Naomi Campbell — and the answer to those was universally “no.

In what is expected to be a series of releases over the next several weeks, the names of a couple of former presidents and dozens more were revealed Wednesday as associates of sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
Among the more than 180 individuals named in 943 pages of unsealed court documents, which saw the federal court website crash for a while as the names become public, were Donald Trump and Bill Clinton. The numerous references to the men, as well as Britain’s Prince Andrew, were unsurprising. To varying degrees, Trump and Clinton had long been publicly known to be associated with Epstein over the past decades.

Happy New Year! ‘Terror Train’ Dares to Ask Whether Dying Is Preferable to Watching a Bad Magic Show
On Friday nights — and special occasions!— IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: You Know, Getting Murdered on a Train Might Still Be Better Than Going to Times Square
The underwhelming New Year’s Eve party is a universal human experience if there ever was one. The holiday is ostensibly the biggest night of the year for debauchery, but burnout, outlandish expectations, and rowdy crowds often turn it into a letdown that makes it a little easier to trade our holiday cheer in for January discipline. But no matter what disappointing experience comes your way tonight, you can take comfort...

Tom Wilkinson, a character actor who was also adept when called upon to play leading parts, has died. The charismatic performer, able to embody both warm, relatable heroes and cunning villains, was 75.
Born in Leeds before moving to Canada and then Cornwall in childhood, Wilkinson knew he was destined to work in entertainment at the age of 18 when he was asked to direct a play.
He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) before forging a career in theatre, film and TV. In 1986, he got his first major screen role in mini-series First Among Equals, based on politician-turned-author Jeffrey Archer’s best-selling novel.
That kicked off a successful career on screens big and small, with his film resume including the likes of Shakespeare In Love, Batman Begins, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Girl With A Pearl Earring, The Patriot, Selma, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind,...

Exclusive: The Stranger Things stage show, an unbelievably brilliant new blueprint for theatricality that premieres in London’s West End tonight, will be the first installment in a trilogy exploring the dark underbelly of Hawkins, Indiana.
Breaking Baz can reveal that parts two and three are set to follow the inaugural play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, in two- or three-year intervals, according to insiders associated with the production. The stage sequels will launch in London first.
Meanwhile, there are already plans for Stranger Things: The First Shadow to transfer to Broadway.
None of that’s official yet, of course. Producers and backers will study reviews out on Friday and across the weekend and the box office receipts before green-lighting any further productions.

Staci Wolfe is retiring. She’s the founder/CEO of Polaris PR, the agency that reps such talent as Steve Buscemi, Tim Roth, filmmakers Allen & Albert Hughes, Gary Sinise, David Copperfield, Matt Dillon, Eric Bana, Aaron Eckhart, Donal Logue, and Gordon Ramsay. Her longtime associate Alana Kass will take the helm of the agency.
Kass joined Polaris in 2011 after working for several years with the late awards consultant Ronni Chasen, and she has been instrumental in the campaigns of all of the company’s clients as well as her own roster including Jonathan Van Ness.
While the twin strikes, social media toxicity and polarized world probably has plenty of Hollywood vets counting the days until that gold watch, Wolfe’s story is different. She’s only 56, and has long been a preeminent publicist. But she has been at it for 34 years and hung on to a vow she made to herself,...

Oscar winner Olivia Colman is set to star as a fisherwoman and Dev Patel as her inanimate made-to-order husband in the twisted romance pic Wicker.
Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson will direct the indie from a script they adapted based on a short story, The Wicker Husband, by Ursula Wills-Jones. Topic Studios and Tango will finance and produce Wicker, with the cameras set to start rolling next year.
Colman will play a smelly and ridiculed fisherwoman in a seaside village where, fed up with small-minded neighbors, she commissions herself a husband to be made from wicker, who is played by Patel. In an otherwise conservative town, their unconventional romance sparks outrage, jealousy and chaos, the producers say in their film synopsis.
Black Bear will open international sales for Wicker in the American Film Market, while CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group will handle sales on the U.

Where are the Skins cast now? Short answer: absolutely everywhere.
While the show did earn critical acclaim as well as a cult following over the course of its seven series, when this scrappy teen comedy drama launched on E4 in 2007 few could have predicted just how many household names it would spawn.
Among Skins’ impressive alumni are actors who went on to win Oscars and Baftas, play lead roles in hit movies like Slumdog Millionaire and Get Out, not to mention star in hit shows like Game of Thrones and Peaky Blinders.
Let’s take a look at some of the Skins cast’s best roles:
Joe Dempsie – Game of Thrones
Playing party animal Chris in Skins was in a way good preparation for Joe Dempsie’s later role as Gendry in Game of Thrones, as both characters have some pretty serious daddy issues: Chris’ dad (played by Green Wing...

Sylvester Stallone believed that George Lucas’ Star Wars caused a huge shift in the film industry. To the actor, the technology used in the sci-fi films had an understated side-effect on action movies as a whole.

Stallone has always put in a lot of thought and emotion into his action roles. One of the reasons he held one of his first action films, First Blood, in such high regard was because of his performance. Stallone’s mercenary John Rambo had little dialogue in the feature. The actor used his solid physique to emote his character’s feelings.
“That’s why I think First Blood is one of the first action films. I relied on body acting to tell the story. The character never talks, but you know exactly what’s going on through the other characters.

It would come as no surprise to learn that “Back on the Strip” started out as a “Magic Mike” parody. I’m not saying that it did. But what else could explain the bizarrely literal premise of an ensemble indie comedy in which our hero is a wannabe magician who heads to Vegas hoping to be the next David Copperfield, only to wind up shaking his wand for a Chippendales-style male dance revue instead?
What makes “Strip” so consistently funny for most of its too-long two-hour running time isn’t Merlin’s lame prestidigi-dream (that part feels like co-writers Chris Spencer and Eric Daniel have been watching too many Nickelodeon movies) but the sorry state of his fellow dancers: a has-been crew called the Chocolate Chips. That fairly original hook allowed the filmmakers to round up an A-list lineup for this C-grade endeavor. The movie features everyone from Tiffany Haddish...

One thing you can always count on from horror anthology shows is that eventually, they'll get to an episode about ventriloquist dolls. Don Rickles starred in an episode of "Tales from the Crypt" about a ventriloquist and his dummy and the granddaddy of them all, "The Twilight Zone," had multiple episodes centered around a ventriloquist and his little wooden pal.
And why wouldn't they? Ventriloquist dummies exist on that same uncanny valley plane as overly realistic porcelain dolls that everybody's grandmother collected for some reason. They're just creepy.
For episode 98, titled "The Dummy," the storytellers wanted to convey a tale about a down-and-out ventriloquist convinced his puppet is alive and being uncooperative. Of course, to the outside world it looks like the dude is having a mental break, but in true "Twilight Zone" fashion the big twist is that the main character's doll is indeed alive. The shocking reveal goes one step further because,...

Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.
To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).
“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023) starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault lands at Max after its theatrical release in February this year. Another major theatrical release from 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), swims onto the streamer starting June 7.

HBO Max is no more. In its place are…HBO and Max. Warner Bros. Discovery’s big change to its premier streaming service was simply to take the “HBO” off of the name “HBO Max,” leaving just “Max.” But in announcing its list of new releases for Max in June 2023, Warner is highlighting all of the HBO content anyway. Divisive is a slightly loaded word. Why would you say it’d be divisive?” wonders Fionn Whitehead, with a furrowed brow. The not-very-online star of Dunkirk hasn’t seen much of the reaction to the BBC’s new adaptation of Great Expectations, in which he plays a steely, glowering Pip. Peaky Blinders showrunner Steven Knight has added spanking, swearing, opium-smoking and references to colonialism to Dickens’s classic coming-of-age tale, and, in the lead-up to tonight’s first episode, the “What the Dickens!” headlines have come thick and fast. “David Copperfield battling zombies or Oliver Twist as a trans teen... what next from the BBC?” asks one pearl-clutcher. Why do I say it might be divisive? Well, I venture... people might have strong feelings. Love. Hate. Not much in the middle. “I hope that’s the case,” he muses, as we talk in the BBC’s offices. “It’s good for people to be challenged.

Here’s our annual rundown of the 10 largest production awards given out by the British Film Institute’s Film Fund in 2022. Backed by National Lottery money, the grants are a key supporter of indie cinema in the UK.
Top of the list is Timestalker, the debut feature film from actor and writer Alice Lowe.
