My first concert ever was Sarah McLachlan at Radio City Music Hall in 1995. The Canadian singer-songwriter was on tour in support of her U.S. breakthrough, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, and had enlisted a then-unknown artist, Paula Cole, as the opening act despite protests from tour promoters, who claimed nobody would pay to see two women.
Of course, they were mistaken, and a few years later, McLachlan helped reimagine the touring music festival with the all-female Lilith Fair. She continues her mission to share the spotlight with other female artists on her latest trek, in celebration of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy’s 30th anniversary, with fellow Canadian Leslie Feist warming up the audience at the Hollywood Bowl last night as the marine layer rolled in and the temperature dropped.
After opening with a mini-set of popular hits and fan favorites from subsequent releases, McLachlan launched into a track-by-track performance of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.

This article contains spoilers for all of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the show titled after her are both cultural icons. Buffy is one of those series that most sci-fi, fantasy, and horror fans have some kind of awareness of even if they have never watched an episode. It kick-started the careers of Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg, and David Boreanaz as Angel.
The series was also stuffed to the brim with memorable moments, from the hilarious (Buffy trying to mime staking a vampire in “Hush”), to the kick-ass (Buffy taking out the Judge with a rocket launcher in “Innocence”), to the gut-wrenching (Buffy finding Joyce in “The Body”). But there is one moment that stands out above all the others and embodies what the show is about.

Before “Rain on Me” by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande and “Kiss Me More” by Doja Cat and Sza became Grammy-winning female collabs, there was a combo of women that managed to snag a big win in the pop field: Christina Aguilera’s “Lady Marmalade” featuring Pink, Lil Kim, and Mýa. The star-studded collaboration, a cover of the number-one hit made famous by the group Labelle, solidified all four artists as pop mainstays, and made history at the Grammys as a diverse, all-female win.
The 2001 “Lady Marmalade” was released in April of that year as part of the soundtrack for “Moulin Rouge,” the Oscar-winning Baz Luhrmann film. The track was quite unusual, on paper. Pink, Lil Kim, Mýa, and Aguilera made very different music, ranging from pop to hip-hop to R&b. On top of that, the track was produced by the iconic Missy Elliott, giving it yet more star cred.

It’s a hot summer day, the car AC is on turbo and the radio is blasting Miguel’s “Sure Thing.” My 8-year-old nephew is singing along happily — until I tell him the song is older than he is.
He’s extremely puzzled. But it’s true.
“Sure Thing” was released in 2010 and was named Billboard’s No. 1 R&b/hip-hop song of 2011. But TikTok resurrected the melodic track this year, and the platform thrust it to higher heights on the pop charts, as streaming platforms added it to current playlists and radio stations began replaying the song 13 years after its release.
Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” was released in 2019, but the addictive bop became a favorite on her ultra-popular Eras Tour, and now it’s in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Sia, thanks to TikTok, relaunched a platinum hit with “Unstoppable” late last year, though it was released...

Paramount Pictures has dropped the first teaser trailer for “Bob Marley: One Love,” its upcoming biopic about the Jamaican singer and songwriter that’s expected to be released in 2024.
The trailer starts as a celebration of Marley and his legacy, as portrayed by “Peaky Blinders” and “The Oa” star Kingsley Ben-Adir. It jumps between Marley playing to concert after concert of adoring fans as the legendary artist’s music plays in the background. As the trailer continues it takes on a darker tone as it delves into Jamaica’s civil war during the 1970s.
It all comes to a head right before the One Love Peace Concert. As someone off screen asks Marley why he’s going to return to Jamaica after there was an assassination attempt on him and his wife, Ben-Adir as Marley calmly replies, “My life is not important to me. My life is for people.”

Gordon Lightfoot, whose lyrics and vocals made him one of the most prominent folk singers of his era, passed away yesterday. He was 84.
Gordon Lightfoot remains best known for his 1976 song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”, which chronicled the sinking of the titular freighter that left all 29 crew dead. That song reached #2 on the Billboard hot 100 and stands as one of the greatest story songs ever, thanks to lyrics like The captain wired in he had water comin’ in / And the good ship and crew was in peril / And later that night when his lights went outta sight / Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
But that was hardly Gordon Lightfoot’s only hit. Throughout his career, the singer-songwriter earned four Grammy nominations, including two for “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”, losing Song of the Year to the Barry Manilow-penned “I Write the Songs” and Best Pop Vocal...

The American Idol judges hear from hundreds of contestants every season — there are bound to be some songs they’ll hear more than once. Understandably, that can get tiresome. Here’s what the judges had to say and songs that have been banned from Idol in the past. Plus, learn more about the current season of the singing competition.

Busted’s Charlie Simpson has been crowned the winner of The Masked Singer.
The singer, 37, who rose to fame with the pop punk band which produced hits including Year 3000 and Crashed The Wedding, performed in disguise as Rhino throughout the ITV series.
Simpson performed three times across Saturday’s finale show and beat Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson, who was disguised as Phoenix, and All Saints star Natalie Appleton, who was hiding behind the Fawn mask.
The Busted star admitted he did not expect to win the show and just tried to “remember the lyrics and have fun”.
Asked how he found the experience, he said: “I was terrified the entire time because the thing I was scared most of was remembering lyrics. I often forget lyrics to my own songs.”

The Super Bowl is almost here, and the ads are as big as ever.
As usual, brands have been getting the jump on the Big Game, releasing and teasing their ads online ahead of time, and some are already going viral with big stars and bigger laughs.

Super Bowl Lvii has arrived, but as viewers observe the biggest televised event of the year, companies are already offering a taste of their highly anticipated star-studded commercials. Sarah Michelle Gellar has shared a “little-known fact”, which connects Buffy the Vampire Slayer and country music icon Dolly Parton.
During a Tuesday (31 January) appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the host raised a tidbit he had read that claimed Dolly Parton was “an uncredited producer” on the supernatural drama.
“Yes! Little-known fact, the legend Dolly Parton was a producer,” Gellar, the show’s titular lead, confirmed.
Although the actor said the cast “never saw [Parton]”, Gellar added: “We’d get Christmas presents in the beginning that would have her name and I would think, ‘She doesn’t know who I am.’
“And then one day somebody asked her about it, and she complimented the show and my performance and I was like, ‘Oh I can die now. Dolly Parton knows who I am and thinks I’m good.’”
“But I’m still here,” Gellar quipped.

Sarah McLachlan’s ruminative tunes don’t immediately sound like the most obvious backdrop for a beer commercial. On Super Bowl Sunday, however, one of her songs will serve as exactly that.
McLachlan’s sad, emotional 1997 song “Angel” will work as a call to attention during a humorous ad for Busch Light, and is part of a bid by brewing giant Anheuser-Busch InBev to develop a new consumer base for the longtime suds staple. “This is sort of stepping out of my comfort zone a little,” the singer and songwriter tells Variety.
In a different era, Busch Light may have seemed expressly targeted to older male aficionados of the outdoors. Now it’s being promoted to a younger crowd that still likes to commune with nature. “We have seen a shift to a younger demographic over the past two to three years,” says Krystyn Stowe, the Anheuser-Busch InBev executive who oversees U.

John Moreland can hardly remember writing many of the lyrics to his new album Birds in the Ceiling. That’s because in the early months of the pandemic, the Oklahoma singer-songwriter found himself settling into a new songwriting routine: After his wife went to sleep, starting around midnight, Moreland would light up a joint, turn the lights off, and begin watching YouTube videos by the user Rambalac, who films himself taking long walks around Tokyo at night.
A few hours later, Moreland would look up and he had written a new song.

Editor’s Note: This review contains spoilers for “Black Bird” Season 1, Episode 4, “WhatsHerName.”
Last week’s episode was all about bringing our protagonist, Jimmy (Taron Egerton), and possible serial killer, Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), together. The walls were starting to crumble, and progress was being made. But would Jimmy be able to get a confession from Larry in time, let alone with the knowledge that a prison guard wanted 10,000 from Jimmy or was threatening to blow his cover?
Weirdly enough the episode decides to table that 10,000 for another day, with the guard acting as if he’s willing to give Jimmy a pass. No doubt this could easily pop up in a subsequent episode, but considering the impact it had last week it’s jarring to have it fizzle out completely here. Instead, we’re traveling back to Wabash, Indiana and Kankakee, Illinois in the 1970s to meet the younger,...

For the first 40 years of “Star Trek” history, the character of Christopher Pike was little more than a footnote in the franchise’s lore. Captain of the Enterprise in the failed original NBC series pilot “The Cage,” Pike, as played by Jeffrey Hunter, wound up as the dry run for William Shatner’s James T. Kirk, a square-jawed hero doing square-jawed hero stuff who fell a few inches short of being right for the job. Gene Roddenberry, ever the environmentalist, recycled scenes from that unaired pilot for a two-part episode of the original series called “The Menagerie,” which allowed for, until 2009, Pike’s greatest contribution to popular culture: his transformation into a hideously scarred burn victim who lived in a large black box that beeped whenever someone asked him a question.
It’s not much build off of, but Pike has become increasingly important to “Trek” as the franchise looks...

The pop-music world, in many ways, has only gotten angstier (it would be hard to imagine a mood-poet chanteuse like Billie Eilish commanding arenas 20 years ago). But even back in the ’90s, Sheryl Crow was the kind of straight-up, middle-of-the-strike-zone, tasty-licks virtuoso of rock ‘n’ roll good times who seemed to have been put on earth to make people happy.
She was at the forefront of a revolutionary wave of women in pop — the Lilith Fair generation, from Alanis Morrisette to Sarah McLachlan to Shawn Colin to Paula Cole — but she was also, you could argue, one of the last great rockers to work in the heart-on-the-sleeve, guitar-riffs-on-air tradition of Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. My favorite line of hers has always been the one that comes after “All I wanna do is have some fun…” — namely, “until the sun comes up over Santa Monica Boulevard.” With her starburst smile and electrifying vocal bravado,...
