Guest reviewer Lee Broughton tackles Tonino Valerii’s Spaghetti Western-cum-political conspiracy thriller. By brazenly transposing key aspects of John F. Kennedy’s assassination onto the assassination of James A. Garfield in 1881, Valerii gives both western and conspiracy film fans much food for thought. A career best performance by Giuliano Gemma, repurposed sets from Once Upon a Time in the West and great turns by a plethora of Sergio Leone’s regular supporting actors bring a sense of gravitas to this intriguing show.

Tom Ortenberg’s distributor has been on block for months.
Tang Media Partners, the venture run by Chinese-American businessman Donald Tang that snapped up a majority stake in Im Global last year, is said to be in talks to buy Open Road Films.
Tom Ortenberg’s distributor launched in 2011 with the backing of AMC Theaters and Regal Entertainment Group and has been on the block for some time.
Despite releasing the 2016 best picture Oscar winner Spotlight, Open Road has not enjoyed sustained success at the box office and recent releases Snowden and Max Steel have stumbled.
Screen understands Tang has been looking at Open Road for about nine months.
Ortenberg, Open Road and Tang Media representatives had not replied to requests for comment at time of writing.
Last year it emerged that Tang Media Partners acquired a 60% stake in Im Global.

Welcome to another installment of Movies to Show My Son. This is the blog series were I discuss movies I can’t way to show my son in the future. I’ll be covering my own personal experience with the movie, movie and life lessons I hope he will learn, and lastly my concerns about showing said film. This week’s film is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Personal Memories:
Of all the properties I enjoyed as a kid the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the one I have the most nostalgia for by far. A big reason for this is just how much of my childhood it took up. I was the prime age when turtle fever hit and absorbed it as many ways as I could. I owned the toys, played the video games, watched the cartoons, and of course saw all the movies.

It's shaping up to be a competitive Martin Luther King Jr. weekend with three new wide releases hitting theaters along with two major expansions and the moderate expansion of Martin Scorsese's Silence. Yet, even with that being the case, after narrowly edging out Rogue One: A Star Wars Story for the #1 spot last weekend, Hidden Figures is looking at a more decisive victory this weekend as the film adds more than 800 theaters. The new releases include STX's PG-13 horror The Bye Bye Man, Paramount is finally delivering Monster Trucks and Open Road will premiere the Jamie Foxx vehicle Sleepless into just over 1,800 theaters. In addition to new releases Lionsgate and CBS Films brings Patriots Day to audiences nationwide and Warner Bros. will do the same for Ben Affleck's Live by Night, but while the former is looking at a solid debut the latter has struggled in limited release.

After calendar grosses for September and October were unable to improve on 2015 numbers, November 2016 saw a +7.6% uptick compared to November 2015 as 264 movies grossed nearly $960 million. This also puts the Holiday 2016 season up +13% to date compared to Holiday 2015 with 209 movies combining to gross over $1.15 billion compared to $1 billion from 215 movies at the same point last year. Additionally, while August, September and October only saw two films (Suicide Squad and Sully) top $100 million at the domestic box office, four November releases have already topped the century mark, led by Disney and Marvel's Doctor Strange with $222.2 million and counting. As noted, Doctor Strange led November's releases after opening over the first weekend of the month with $85 million and has since gone on to gross over $222 million. Strange was one of two Disney releases in November, the other being Moana, to gross over $100 million domestically adding to the studio's six films that have grossed over $100 million this year alone.

President Obama will pardon his last few turkeys this week, but don’t expect any of these movies to be spared. Forbes has released its list of the year’s biggest turkeys, a seasonally appropriate term for box-office bombs. “Max Steel” has the questionable honor of topping the list, which sources its information from Box Office Mojo and IMDb, as the film based on Mattel’s line of action figures grossed a mere $4.4 million despite opening in wide release across the country.

A lackluster October 2016 at the box office saw calendar grosses down ~8% compared to last year, contributing to a disappointing Fall movie season that finished down 9.3% compared to 2015. As a result, only one new release in the Fall 2016 timeframe (Sully) has managed to gross over $100 million domestically so far and it would appear it's going to remain that way. Overall, October saw a record 293 films (+32 compared to 2015) generate $657.4 million compared to the $715.3 million from 261 films last year, resulting in the second worst per film average over the last 35 years. For both, 2016's October timeframe and the Fall movie season, this was the second year in a row that saw a decline in grosses, which could be chalked up to the fact 2014 delivered a record Fall movie season, driven by a record October. That said, while October 2015 was down just 5.6% compared to 2014, October 2016 is down 13.27% compared to 2014.October 2016's largest grossing calendar...

This weekend brought some welcome news: Ben Affleck’s latest, “The Accountant” (Warner Bros.), came in better than expected. And though “Kevin Hart: What Now?” (Universal) grossed only about half as much, they both did well compared to their cost.
But the overall box office continues to lag against 2015’s peak record numbers, dominated by such fourth-quarter entries as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” a Bond film and the final “Hunger Games.” It’s hard to imagine that 2016 totals can beat them, even with Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” in early November, J.K. Rowling’s latest “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” from Warners and Disney’s “Moana” closer to Thanksgiving.

Warner Bros.'s The Accountant stormed well ahead of BoxOfficeMojo's weekend forecast to finish #1 for the weekend. The Ben Affleck starrer more than than doubled its closest competition, which found a pair of Universal titles competing for second place between the debut of Kevin Hart: What Now? and last weekend's #1 film, The Girl on the Train. Meanwhile, Open Road's Max Steel finished outside the top ten with one of the worst openings ever for a film debuting in over 2,000 theaters. Overall, the top twelve only finished slightly higher than Mojo's projections despite The Accountant over-performing, bringing in a combined $88.5 million, which is down 7.4% compared to last weekend and down nearly 21% compared to last year. At #1, The Accountant rung up an estimated $24.7 million over the weekend, well ahead of not only Mojo's forecasts but industry expectations that were anticipating an opening anywhere from $15-20 million. While the opening is relatively...

Even if you’ve never heard of Max Steel, there’s a decent chance your kids have. A chrome-costumed teenage superhero with a fluctuating set of powers, Max was first introduced as a Mattel action figure in the mid-’90s, before making the leap to comic books, video games, two televised cartoon series, and nine direct-to-dvd animated films (only one of which, admittedly, has been released outside of Latin America). Given the volume of material bearing the Max Steel moniker, one might expect a cinematic version to play to the enthusiasts that have kept this property alive—especially in an era of largely faithful geek-pop adaptations. But the live-action Max Steel, arriving in theaters today more than two years after it wrapped production, isn’t some fans-only plunge into an alienating, cross-medium mythology. Quite to the contrary, it applies its brand name to an origin story so familiar—so entirely...

This weekend Ben Affleck adds his star power to the faltering fall box office. His action thriller “The Accountant” (Warner Bros.) boasts the best chance to land atop the Top Ten this weekend, ahead of two other wide openers: comedy “Kevin Hart: What Now?” (Universal) and Mattel actioner “Max Steel” (Open Road). But if it falters, “What Now?” might be an upset winner.
Happily for studio accountants, all three films are at the low end of budget ranges, all economical enough to make profits more likely. But theater revenues could fall 20% or more from the same mid-October weekend last year. Last year’s Top Ten totaled $109 million. This year’s should fall short of $100 million.
Last year also saw three openers—”Goosebumps,” “Bridge of Spies” and “Crimson Peak” (ranging from $24 to $15 to 13 million respectively)— along with strong holdover grosses for “The Martian” and “Hotel Transylvania 2.” Every position this...

If you're of a certain age, you probably remember the Mattel line of Max Steel action figures back in the late 1990s that were introduced in a comic book and animated series (2000-'02) as well as a series of direct-to-video movies through 2012. Now a new live-action movie centers on the character of Max Steel, a 19 year old with superpowered energy that he has trouble channeling. 2016-10-12T15:27:24-07:00New Movies October 14: Kevin Hart and 'The Accountant'
This weekend probably won't be as wet and windy as it was on the East Coast last weekend, but it still could end up being pretty dreary at the box office. Three new wide releases debut in theaters this week, and just like in the past few weeks, none of the new movies is expected to be a huge hit.
The first of the week's new wide releases is The Accountant, a thriller starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal and J.K. Simmons. Despite its obvious big-name cast, this one is getting largely negative reviews and not much social media buzz. Still, it's expected to take the top spot at the weekend box office with ticket sales in the vicinity of $15 million.
The next big new release is the comedy concert film Kevin Hart: What Now?...

Supergirl was a show that started off on an okay note. Like most TV shows, it took a bit for it to hit its stride, and for me, it was about episode 6 or 8 of Season 1 where it truly began to take off. For the first time, I found myself attached to the characters who, up until that point, had seemed like cardboard cutout figures. Fun cardboard cutout figures. But cardboard figures nonetheless.
The show progressively got me more involved, and halfway through the first season, I became a legit fan of the show -- as much of a fan as The Flash, even, which is one of my favorite shows on network TV.
Last season left off on a particularly frustrating note: with Kara opening up a pod similar to the one she crash-landed on Earth in years before. We never got a look at what was inside the pod,...

Filmmaker Gavin O’Connor has had a lot of ups and downs in his career, at least in terms of his films getting a proper release, but he’s still managed to establish himself as a director that actors want to work with, whether it’s Edward Norton and Colin Farrell for his crime drama Pride & Glory or Natalie Portman in the Western Jane Got a Gun. Probably O’Connor’s strongest genre to date though has been his popular sports films, Miracle and Warrior, which go into the world of Olympic hockey and mixed martial arts, respectively.
O’Connor’s latest movie The Accountant is an action-thriller starring Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff, known in the criminal circuit as “The Accountant,” not just for the mathematical skills he’s able to use for laundering money, but also for the efficiency with which he takes down the targets he’s hired to eliminate.

2016-10-09T14:50:20-07:00Weekend Box Office: 'Girl on the Train' Dominates 'Miss Peregrine'
Another humdrum weekend at the box office turned out pretty much as everyone expected, with only one of three new wide releases doing respectable business and none of them delivering anything close to a hit performance. The thriller The Girl on the Train was the weekend's top movie, easily surpassing last week's number one, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.
The Girl on the Train, which was based on the best-selling novel by Paula Hawkins, came in almost in the middle of the range of estimates offered by experts ahead of its release. The film's weekend domestic gross came out to about $24.7 million, significantly better than the $18 million on the low end of projections but nowhere near the $30 million that some optimists had predicted. The good news is that the film cost less than $50 million to make,...

The weekend turned out almost exactly as expected with Universal and DreamWorks's The Girl on the Train finishing at #1 and the weekend top twelve coming in ~8.7% behind the same weekend last year, grossing a combined $96.4 million. The weekend's two other new wide releases*The Birth of a Nation and Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life*are in a fight for sixth place as holdovers mostly ruled the top five. This weekend also saw Disney's Finding Dory become the 27th film to ever cross $1 billion worldwide, making it the third Disney release of 2016 to cross that mark. Finishing at #1, the adaptation of Paula Hawkins' bestselling novel, The Girl on the Train, came up just a bit shy of expectations with an estimated $24.7 million from 3,144 theaters. It's no stretch to assume the film experienced diminishing buzz as the weekend wore on, due mostly to the largely negative reviews (44% on RottenTomatoes) and lackluster,...

While the film was developed for the family friendly PG rating release, the MPAA ended up giving the movie a more restrictive PG-13 rating — this could be a financial nail […]

Max Steel is a thing that is happening, whether we like it or not. Based on an action figure line from Mattel in the early '00s that no one remembers, the movie is blasting its way onto the big-screen. Obviously a potential franchise starter, the film follows the eponymous Max Steel as he finds some sort of alien-suit-guyver bullshit and fights aliens or something. He also has an annoying robot... The fact that this movie exists should be cause for celebration. With more and more big-budget movies being based solely on IPs (no matter how obscure or ridiculous *cough* Max Steel *cough*), it's nice when there's not only an original idea, but one that was based on a spec script. I mean, Passengers is one of the few big films in recent memory that wasn't at some point a... Read More...

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. If bad guys were chasing you and you were saved by a superhero named Max Steel, would you be okay with it? I would. I'd be thankful to be alive. But after the gratitude wore off, I'd be bummed that it wasn't Spider-Man, Superman, or Batman. In terms of popularity, Max Steel is strictly C-list. If he and Luke Cage were to go to clubbing together, Luke Cage would be waved in, while Max Steel would be stuck behind the velvet rope. But superheroes aren't in it for the fame, they're in it for the justice. And as far as Max Steel's concerned, he could have it much worse. He's lucky. He's not disfigured like Fantastic Four's Thing. (Or other granite-based heroes like Concrete and Badrock, and no,...

After sitting on the shelf for a decent amount of time, Max Steel is now less than two months away from being released. Following that announcement, Taylor Lautner signed on to star, only to then depart from the project and […]

To most people the name Max Steel is probably meaningless. It sounds like it would be the name of an action hero from the late '80s played by Jesse Ventura, but it's actually a toy line from the early 2000s that was launched as part of a CGI-animated kids show that only lasted for 3 short seasons. Basically, the only way you'd really remember Max Steel is if you were a kid in 2001 who happened to have been given one as a present. It's not exactly G.I. Joe or Transformers we're talking about, but if you were at the right age to remember the toys, have we got some bombshell news for you: the live-action Max Steel movie now has a trailer. Originally Taylor Lautner had been attached to the project, but he dropped out and the movie stalled for a while as a...

If you're someone who was ultra excited that your favorite '90s toy Max Steel was getting his own movie, I'm afraid I've got some bad news for you. There's a trailer, and it's not great, it's not terrible, it's not humorous...it's just there.
I'm not quite sure what to say about this one. Visually, it looks cool, but if there was an award for underwhelming trailers, this one would be impossible to top. Hell, even these late '90s Spanish commercials for the toy are more jam-packed with action than this!
I'm still not entirely sure why this film is being made. From what I remember in the U.S., Max Steel was not even a big deal for kids. I'm guessing he was a much bigger property internationally? That might explain the Japanese subtitles in the official trailer.
What was Mattel thinking with this one?! Max Steel releases October 21st.

Two of the largest toy compaies in the world, Hasbro and Mattel, are reportedly in talks to possibly merge according to Bloomberg Business.
Hasbro approached Mattel about a potential transaction late last year, and the companies have held on-and-off-again talks about a deal. Details of how a transaction might be structured isn't known at this point, and the talks may not lead to a deal, but the talk is enough to get people wondering how this will impact their film properties.
Both companies make action figures, dolls and playsets for many major film releases. They also own major IPs with Hasbro having its own studio development division behind the "Transformers" and "G.I. Joe" franchises and has films such as "Hungry Hungry Hippos," "My Little Pony," "Monopoly," "Magic: The Gathering," "Play-Doh" and "Dungeons & Dragons" in the works.

Sean Fahey, founder of Black Jack Press and mastermind behind the outstanding weird west anthology series, Tall Tales from the Badlands, has begun a Kickstarter campaign to launch a new anthology, Sagas of the Northmen, featuring one of medieval Europe’s most feared cultures: the Vikings. On the Kickstarter page, Fahey states, “In the tradition of the medieval Icelandic Sagas, our book features tales about (seemingly) ordinary men and women finding themselves in extraordinary circumstances. The subject matter explored in this inaugural volume is expansive and includes stand-alone tales about the infamous raid on Lindisfarne, Leif Erikson, the Icelandic justice system, the Viking funeral ritual, the Varangian Guard, the Viking warrior ethos and Freydis Eiriksdottir’s expedition to North America.” These are some truly epic tales from Viking history. The raid on Lindisfarne was a brutal attack by the Vikings on English villagers and marked the beginning of the “Viking Age.

I recently started watching Disney Xd's latest animated superhero show, Max Steel, which began it's run last year. While it hasn't been the best, it has been pretty entertaining, and the movie looks interesting. 5 few stills have hit, featuring the main hero Maxwell McGrath, as well as the film's synopsis. You can take a look below, then let us know your thoughts in the usual place! Max Steel is an in-depth “origin” story packed with captivating characters and fast-paced action. The plot chronicles the adventures of Max McGrath and his mother have just moved back to Copper Canyon, the town in which Max’s scientist father died in a mysterious accident shortly after Max was born. As Max adjusts to his new school, things get complicated when his body starts to generate strange energy flare-ups that he can’t control. At first a confusing mix of inconvenient and exhilarating, this...
