"Werewolf by Night" really stood out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a single hour based on the comic book character of the same name and was (sort of) a first shot across the bow for the idea of a special rather than a series or a full-length feature film. It was followed by a presentation connected to the main MCU, "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special."
Of course, Marvel has done something akin to this before in the form of 3- to 15-minute short films called One Shots that align with their features like "All Hail the King" and "Agent Carter" which went with "Iron Man 3" and "The Consultant" that was spawned by "Thor." "Werewolf by Night," however, was more in the style of holiday specials like the animated "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" from 1966 that used to air on television around Halloween.

The latest trailer for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" reveals a friendly neighborhood multiverse like no other, absolutely crammed with webheads of all shapes and sizes. From fan favorites like the Bombastic Bag-Man to deeper cuts like Spider-Man Unlimited (the star of the '90s cartoon sequel series), each frame of Miles Morales' highly anticipated return to movie theaters is Kirby-dotted with copious cameos.
Amidst a heartful Morales family pep talk and new footage of a particularly antagonistic Spider-Man 2099, the trailer also introduces another presumably prominent member of the film's cast, Spider-Woman, an oft-forgotten member of the Spider-Verse, despite being one of Marvel's few legacy female superheroes. Who is Spider-Woman? And why isn't she more well-known as the female equivalent of the world's most famous superhero? If you're wondering who's serving a sepia-toned Vulture some fresh hot torque in the trailer, we've got you covered. Here are 10 things you need to know about Spider-Woman.

There's nothing like a "Top 10 Movies of the Year" list to make me realize just how deeply cursed the United Kingdom is when it comes to movie distribution.
"Tár"? I don't know her, and won't get the chance until midway through January. "Marcel the Shell with Shoes On"? Sounds cute! I look forward to checking it out in February, seven months after the United States release. "Pearl"? It would be faster to import the U.S. Blu-ray than to wait for the UK theatrical release in March of 2023. "On the Count of Three"? There's seemingly no intention of releasing Jerrod Carmichael's feature directorial debut over here at all. Somehow, and I don't know how, Brexit is to blame for this.
Fortunately, every now and then, a movie does manage to make the journey across the Atlantic to bless our humble screens. This year brought some true gems from the U.

Last month, Marvel and Disney+ released the very cool creature feature Halloween special Werewolf by Night (you can read our 8/10 review Here). So far, there hasn’t been any word about when the characters introduced in that special – titular werewolf Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal), monster hunter’s daughter Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly), and swamp monster Man-Thing – will be returning in any future movies, specials, or series. But during an interview with The Wrap, Donnelly was enthusiastic about the idea of returning for a follow-up.
Donnelly said, “The thing that I love about this particular story for Elsa is that we get such a sense that we’re only at the beginning of something for her; she’s not introduced as the character that we know from the comics. It’s her pre-that or maybe she has been that and something has happened — we don’t know. And so it...

"Werewolf by Night" is a real departure from the previous Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. Released as "A Marvel Studios Special Presentation," the short and sweet 52-minute feature felt like a blast from the past. First-time director and acclaimed composer Michael Giacchino crafts a comic book story that feels like a love letter to the Universal Monster pictures of old. From the black and white cinematography to the "cigarette burns" on the "print" of the film, the project's aesthetic has everything you'd expect from a horror film. While it's definitely a lot more restrained than typical horror projects, there is still plenty of bloody violence that the MCU hasn't seen before. At the center of it is Elsa Bloodstone, played excellently by Laura Donnelly.
Elsa's character is the "final girl" of "Werewolf by Night," a capable hunter ostracized by the monster hunting community and her own family. Donnelly brought a snarky...

In a tonal departure for the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, Disney+’s Halloween TV special “Werewolf by Night” took viewers on a journey back to ‘30s and ‘40s era black-and-white horror B-movies, following heiress Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly) and disguised lycanthrope Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal) on a mythical quest to retrieve the coveted bloodstone that will signify a new leader among the monster-hunting troupe.
Directed by Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino, who wanted the film to pay homage to movies from decades past, “Werewolf by Night” is very much a singular project that isn’t indebted to or reliant on other MCU properties.

I must be honest; I’ve not been keeping up with Moon Knight in his own book at the moment. Only so many hours in the day after all. I love the character, though, and when I saw this Annual it grabbed my attention for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it was just Halloween, and Moon Knight is the perfect character for this time of year. Secondly, it guest stars Werewolf by Night, an even more suitable character for this time of year. Lastly, I liked the symmetry.
These two characters have a history that goes way back, 50 years in fact, all the way to Werewolf by Night #32 in 1972. Over the years a real love/hate relationship has blossomed, mainly in the various Moon Knight books. Nice to see writer Jed MacKay and Editor Tom Brevoort love their history.

If the Marvel Cinematic Universe does one thing particularly well, it’s deliver family-friendly outings for us all to enjoy. It’s in stark contrast to Warner Bros.’ typical DC output, which has been called out for its bloody and brooding aesthetic that puts the dark in Dark Knight. Although there have been talks about a more mature MCU, we’re still yet to get an R-rated outing – that honour will soon go to Deadpool 3.
That doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of death and destruction in the MCU, with movies like Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness being about as dark as they come. Across four phases, a mountain of movies, and a multiverse of series, it’s not all been happy times sharing a shawarma or twerking with Megan Thee Stallion. Here are 10 of the darkest moments to grace the MCU.

Exclusive: Global Screen has acquired international distribution rights to the live-action family drama Lassie – A New Adventure ahead of the AFM and released the first image for the upcoming feature which is due to hit big screens in 2023.
The German-language feature is a sequel to Hanno Olderdissen’s 2019 reboot Lassie Come Home and reunites the director with young actor Nico Marischka in a cast also featuring Justus von Dohnányi and Katharina Schüttlerother.
Inspired by Eric Knight’s 1940 children’s classic, this new adventure sees collie dog protagonist Lassie investigate the mysterious disappearances of several pedigree dogs, with the help of best friend Flo (Marischka) and new companions Henri, Kleo and little Pippa, a Jack Russell Terrier.

Laura Donnelly grew up in Belfast, but there was one thing that set her family apart from most people they knew. "Quite unusually for growing up in Belfast in the '80s, my family was really into Halloween," she tells Popsugar. "And we always had very big Halloween parties and still do to this day - it's kind of the biggest festival in my household."
Donnelly's Auntie Paula was the official party planner, and Donnelly credits her with giving her a "big love" of Halloween. Her sister Helen was also a major horror fan, and Donnelly would watch with her. "Of course, as little sisters do, you just latch onto whatever your big sister likes," she jokes. "And she watched all the Hammer horrors and all the Universal Monster movies and all of that stuff. And I got really, really into them."

Werewolf transformations are old hat for filmmakers, but that's not to say they're easy. When George Waggner directed 1941's "The Wolf Man," he was limited to depicting Larry Talbot's (Lon Chaney Jr.) monstrous makeover by dissolving between different shots of Chaney taken at various stages in the application of his makeup. By the time John Landis made "An American Werewolf in London" 40 years later, advances in makeup and movie tech allowed the director to portray the werewolf transformation process in a far more convincing and disturbing fashion.
Wisely, "Werewolf by Night" director Michael Giacchino avoided repeating the mistakes of Joe Johnston's 2010 film "The Wolfman" (which merges CGI with practical effects to clunky results) when it was his turn to show a human changing into their lycanthrope state. Giacchino's Marvel special follows a pack of monster hunters as they gather one night to compete in a special monster hunt...

When watching Marvel Studios' recently released "Werewolf By Night" special on Disney+, viewers are easily clued into the fact that director Michael Giacchino loves monsters. This is not only obvious on an aesthetic level, but also through characterization. The titular werewolf, Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal), is not wholly defined by his abilities and is primarily framed as a skilled hunter with a heart of gold. Much like Larry Talbot in 1941's "The Wolf Man," his humanity is a bigger focus than his monstrosity. In an interview with /Film's Jack Giroux, Giacchino revealed that this framing was 100 intentional.
"I always felt sorry for these characters and that was the whole approach to this, was to say, 'Yes, monsters exist, but the monsters, in the typical sense of things we need to kill, I don't believe they exist,'" he explained. "I believe they need to be looked at, understood, listened to,...

Since its premiere, True Believers have been raving about "Werewolf By Night." One of the major points of praise is that the Marvel Studios' Special Presentation feels disconnected from the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as opposed to the rest of the offerings in Phase Four. In other words, it required less "homework" for those looking for a taste of the MCU rather than a whole multi-course meal that requires all the cutlery and utensils in the fine dining set.
But what if famed composer Michael Giacchino's ode to classic monster movies starring Gael Garcia Bernal was more connected than you think? After all, there was one thing throughout the whole story that was presented in color (until the very end) and that thing seemed to be incredibly important. And we're not just talking about its importance to the monster hunters gathered at Castle Bloodstone. What if the...

Directed by Michael Giacchino, better known as the composer responsible for exceptional scores like those for "The Batman" and 2009's "Star Trek," "Werewolf by Night" is not your standard Marvel fare. That's clear from the opening credits, which unfold in a moody black and white, and are interspersed with violent claw slashes and crackling lightning bolts reminiscent of James Whale's "Frankenstein."
Marvel has dipped its toe into horror before, namely with the gleeful gore of "Blade" and Sam Raimi's chillingly macabre "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness." Accordingly, "Werewolf by Night" feels like an affectionate love letter to the classic creature features of yore. Its premise is simple: Famed monster hunter Ulysses Bloodstone has shuffled from this mortal coil, leaving his position vacant and his magical artifact up for grabs. A group of fellow monster slayers are invited by Ulysses' widow to compete for his title, which...

‘Vikram’ Review: A Tamil Action Legend Returns to Take Down a Drug Dealer in Thrilling Kollywood Hit
If Hollywood can justify making sequels to “Rambo” and “Top Gun” more than three decades on, why can’t Kollywood do the same? In tons-of-fun “Vikram,” a secret agent first introduced in 1986 emerges from deep undercover to thwart the biggest drug deal in Indian history. He’s a grandfather now, but that doesn’t stop the title character (Kamal Haasan) from tossing people across the room in this turbo-charged, three-hour action bonanza, which pairs Vikram with a younger operative named Amar (Fahadh Faasil). The two have at least one thing in common: Rules and regulations don’t matter, which means they’re free to fight crime as creatively as they (and director Lokesh Kanagaraj) see fit.
Taking a page from James Cameron’s “True Lies,” with its go-big-or-go-home approach to set-pieces, Kanagaraj has pulled off a memorably over-the-top blockbuster and the year’s top-grossing Tamil-language hit (at 53.7 million and counting...

The shadows of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are pooling together, forming a new corner in this ever-expanding franchise. It’s populated not by brightly colored costumed heroes who can stand in the spotlight as Avengers, or villains who demand the world’s attention, but by monsters rendered in every shade of grey, forced to navigate a black and white world. While Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness cracked the door open to Marvel Studios horror, Michael Giacchino’s Werewolf by Night, a 53-minute entry billed as a “Marvel Special Presentation,” blows that door off its hinges and fully immerses audiences in a world that has long existed on the fringes, even within the realm of Marvel publishing. 50 years ago, Marvel Comics changed their universe by welcoming horror into its midst. And now, 50 years later, it’s happening again on the film and television side.

Werewolf By Night is a big deal for the MCU, introducing a darker part of the Marvel Universe that is reportedly set to shake things up in the future. If you haven't seen "Werewolf By Night," there are major spoilers for the special ahead!
Marvel's "Werewolf By Night" is exciting for a multitude of reasons. It's a fun directorial debut from an expert film composer Michael Giacchino, adopting the aesthetics and paying tribute to 1940s creature features, and calling back to the tradition of Marvel Cinematic Universe one-shots. Dubbed a "Marvel Studios' Special Presentation," it sets up a format of shorter one-off stories in the mold of an hour-long TV special.
If "Werewolf by Night" is a good example of what they're aiming to do with the format, it might lead to more exciting genre and stylistic experiments in the MCU down the line. The story follows an unlikely werewolf hero, Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal), and his infiltration of a cabal of monster hunters and their deadly competition to decide the rightful heir of a powerful relic, the Bloodstone.

“Werewolf by Night,” Marvel Studios’ Halloween-themed mini-movie, has just hit Disney+. And it’s something to howl about.
A black-and-white creature feature directed by frequent Marvel Studios collaborator Michael Giacchino and styled after similar movies from the 1940s, it introduces us to the title character, whose human name is Jack Russell (get it?) and who, in the film, is played by the great Gael Garcia Bernal. Jack is brought to a remote estate with fellow monster hunters, where he is tasked with bagging the biggest, most fearsome beast yet. But can he accomplish his goal while also concealing his true identity?
That’s the big question. But today we are here to talk about an even bigger question: who is that big monster that everybody is after? What is his deal and where could he fit into the MCU going forward?
Major spoilers for “Werewolf by Night” follow. If you haven’t watched yet,...

Disney+ had fans howling at the Moon on October 7, as Werewolf by Night made its bloody debut as the first Marvel Studios Special Presentation. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is embracing its dark side, and while Werewolf by Night isn’t quite the R-rated splatterfest it could be, its homages to horror make it a monster mash for the ages that introduces some major players to the MCU.
As the name suggests, the focus of Werewolf by Night is Gael García Bernal’s Jack Russell (not the dog), who plays the titular wolfman. Also along for the ride are Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly) and the long-awaited MCU arrival of Man-Thing. With Werewolf by Night boasting an impressive body count, don’t expect too many of its characters to return, however, a well-hidden Easter egg hints that Jack and Elsa could have some bad blood if they meet again.

Gael García Bernal’s performance on Disney+ as Marvel’s crime-fighting Werewolf By Night joins hirsute favourites from The Wolf Man to The Howling
We’re firmly into October, and though Halloween is still three weeks away, plenty of streaming outlets are already donning their Halloween garb. Disney+ got in on the act last week with Werewolf By Night, their first ever “special presentation” – which is to say, an hour-long one-off – and yet another outgrowth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This isn’t superhero business as usual, however, but a curious screen debut for Jack Russell, a lycanthrope protagonist first introduced in the comics 50 years ago. Played here by Gael García Bernal, he’s a monster hunter afflicted with the old hair-sprouting. Directed by Michael Giacchino, better known for his lively composing work, this nonsense adventure cultivates a chintzier, more retro B-movie aesthetic than most Marvel fare, and is more likable for it.

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand, stranger and stranger characters from the bottomless depths of the Marvel Comics universe are going to begin appearing. At its inception in 2008, the MCU still took place in a world that struck at least a passing resemblance to our own. Sometime in 2016, however, when Scott Derrickson's "Doctor Strange" announced that magic is real, the MCU effectively left much of its connection to the real world behind. By 2022, so many extraordinary super-beings and omnipotent space deities have been introduced that nothing seems impossible anymore.
Michael Giacchino's new TV special "Werewolf by Night," now available on Disney+, takes a swing that, in earlier years, might have been considered bold for the MCU. As it so happens, monsters are real in the Marvel universe, and they have secret societies and superhero teams of their own. This post contains light spoilers for Werewolf by Night.
If you’ve been watching She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, you know that the MCU likes to dig deep into the decades-long backlog of Marvel Comics to find weird and obscure characters, including Mr. Immortal, El Aguila, and Porcupine. The upcoming Halloween special Werewolf by Night seems like a continuation of that approach, pushing lesser-known wolfman character Jack Russell to the forefront. But while Russell is certainly a C-list Marvel hero, at least he headlined his own comic for a while in the 1970s. The same cannot be said for the character who provides the emotional spine for the Werewolf by Night special, Elsa Bloodstone.
The scion of the Bloodstone monster hunters, Elsa has made a name for herself in cult comics such as Nextwave: Agents of Hate and Monsters Unleashed. But those comics only scratch the surface of the character’s depth,...

“Werewolf by Night” is here.
The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a midsized movie, running at just 53 minutes (it’s billed as a “Marvel Studios Special Presentation”), that explores the title character, who goes by the human name Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal). Jack is a monster hunter who, along with fellow hunters, is summoned to a mysterious mansion and tasked with bagging the most fearsome creature imaginable. Can he bring in the beast while also successfully concealing his true identity?
That last question looms over “Werewolf by Night.” But there is a bigger question still: does “Werewolf by Night” have a post-credits sequence?
No spoilers, but we will reveal whether or not “Werewolf by Night” has a post-credits scene, so if you don’t want to know, turn back now!
Wait, what is “Werewolf by Night” again?
See above. It’s basically a Marvel Studios Halloween special,...

Disney+’s two most recent high-profile projects, Werewolf by Night and Andor, are led by lifelong friends Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, and Luna is making sure his friend and frequent collaborator understands the lay of the land.
García Bernal is not a complete stranger to Disney, having previously voiced the role of Héctor in Pixar’s Coco, but joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and leading its first-ever “Special Presentation” is certainly a different beast. That beast is named Jack Russell/Werewolf by Night, who attends an exclusive monster hunt in director-composer Michael Giacchino’s Werewolf by Night special. Giacchino, who composed the aforementioned Coco, offered the titular role to García Bernal directly.
García Bernal and Luna are currently producing Hulu’s Spanish-language limited series, La Máquina, and the duo can’t help but relish their good fortune.

This article contains spoilers for "Werewolf by Night."
"Werewolf by Night," the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is being presented as a "special presentation." This means, one can presume, that its events won't be as heavily incorporated into the rest of the MCU in the same fashion its theatrical counterparts are. "Werewolf By Night" comes from a specially branded corner of Marvel Comics usually reserved for monsters, demons, and other supernatural creatures of the night. Ghost Rider, Blade, and Morbius the Living Vampire also hail from this corner. Werewolf by Night was originally created in 1972 by Roy Thomas, Jean Thomas, Gerry Conway, and Mike Ploog. The character is a man named Jack Russell (nothing to do with the breed of terrier) who, true to his name, becomes a wolf man every full moon. Fittingly, the original "Werewolf by Night" comics were written by a man named Marv Wolfman.

After no less than 15 Phase Four MCU projects, Marvel’s Werewolf By Night has arrived on Disney+ as a one-off curiosity, and the “special presentation”, directed by acclaimed composer Michael Giacchino, is refreshingly free from many of the pressures associated with Marvel’s other live-action TV endeavors.
There’s been no mandate to stretch this tale out over six-to-nine episodes. There’s little in the way of reliance on CG or green screen effects. Nor is there any urge to connect the plot to upcoming MCU stories. It simply is. That feels like a smart choice for this entry into the cinematic universe, which has been struggling to find its feet since wrapping The Infinity Saga in 2019.
The action centers on Gael García Bernal’s Jack Russell – bless them for unashamedly sticking with the original name – a sweet-natured lycanthrope in control of his inner monster,...

Okay, who’s ready to take another trip into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (like I have to ask)? Whoa there true believer, hold up, this isn’t a review of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. That’s still four or five weeks away. No, consider this an appetizer, a tasty ‘nosh if you will since it’s not quite a feature and it’s too long to really be considered a “short subject’ at a brisk 52 minutes. Oh, and it’s not coming to your multiplex as it will be streaming into your home. This is being called a “Marvel Studios Special Presentation”. I’ll agree with the second word as it explores an “outer region” of the MCU, though it’s not set on one of the alternate dimensions...

Plot: A secret group of monster hunters gather at Bloodstone Manor following the death of their leader and engage in a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic, which will bring them face to face with a dangerous monster.
Review: Billed as a special presentation, Marvel Studios’ Werewolf by Night is in fact a standalone story that is too short to be a feature film and not long enough to be a series. Instead, it is about the length of a single episode of television but packs enough material to serve as the template for Marvel Studios to pump out any number of stories that don’t quite fit the bill for a movie or a show. The experiment works as Werewolf by Night is a blast from start to finish that allows Marvel Studios to play with more unusual aspects of their comic book source material without being dependent on massive budgets.

In the dead of night, at a remote mansion tucked far away from prying eyes, a group of men and women convene. They’re appearances are all the more ghastly by the room’s atmospheric lighting; some seem to have not slept or seen sunlight for days. Each person eyes the others warily. Servants come and go. Finally, a person at the center of the room rises and addresses the assembled. There is a mission, completed before the sun rises. Whomever emerges victorious from this contest of wills shall not...

After dipping a toe into the horror genre with “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” earlier this year, the Marvel Cinematic Universe jumps into the deep end with “Werewolf by Night” — well, as much as it can within the MCU’s strict PG-13 parameters. It’s the creepiest and bloodiest Marvel project by far, and clocking in at a lean 53 minutes long, it’s a perfect, snack-sized Halloween treat heading into the spookiest of seasons.
The set-up to director Michael Giacchino’s “Werewolf by Night” is simple: A group of deadly monster hunters arrive at Bloodstone Temple to participate in a hunt to win the Bloodstone (the latest Marvel MacGuffin) and become heirs to the creepy, beast-filled property. In addition to hunting their prey, the characters turn on each other during a bloody night of backstabbing and creature carnage.

At this moment, no streamer is having more fun with its combination of boundless programming real estate, boundless money and boundless IP than Disney+. Whether it’s six-hour commercials — err… “documentaries” — for Disney-adjacent properties or five-minute animated shorts built around various beloved characters, it’s never entirely clear when the thing premiering on Disney+ is going to be an ongoing series, limited series, feature-length movie or nebulously unspecified “special.”
In that latter category, Disney+ dropped the generally inconsistent Muppets Haunted Mansion last October. It continued the company’s baffling ongoing struggle to figure out smart things to do with the seemingly endlessly fungible Muppets franchise, but at only 49 minutes and still packed with appealing moments, it felt like exactly the sort of small, jeopardy-free swing Disney should be taking.
The same is true of this October’s Disney+ Halloween season special, Werewolf by Night.

Plenty of new superheroes have joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Avengers: Endgame capped off three box office-dominating movie phases and bid farewell to some of its key characters. Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight have all brought something new to the MCU landscape in their respective Disney+ series, but now, spooky season is set to introduce a monster in their midst.
In Werewolf By Night, a secretive cabal of monster hunters will gather to take part in a deadly competition for a powerful relic. It’s fall, which means we are in full swing of Spooky Season! With that, Disney+ will premiere the television special Werewolf by Night next month. Director Michael Giacchino–who you may know best for his film scores–recently discussed what Werewolf by Night means and how it evolved.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been around for well over a decade now, dating back to "Iron Man" in 2008. That initial film feels so humble compared to where we are now, with epics like "Avengers: Endgame" and even ambitious shows like "WandaVision" in the rearview mirror, with so much more to come in the years ahead. But the wealth of source material available to draw from in the pages of Marvel Comics represents so much more than capes and ultra-strong heroes. With the upcoming Disney+ special "Werewolf by Night," Marvel Studios is finally opening up the playbook a bit by going full-on horror. Yes, really.
Marvel's latest recently debuted at Fantastic Fest and I was in attendance. I can confirm that director Michael Giacchino's special, which introduces Jack Russell (Gael Garcia Bernal) as the titular monster, is full-on horror that just so happens to exist in the MCU. Giacchino,...

Michael Giacchino is no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has composed the scores for "Doctor Strange," "Thor: Love and Thunder," and the entire Spider-Man "Home" trilogy, where he reworked the classic 1960s "Spider-Man" theme.
In his latest MCU project, though, he's directing as well as composing. Giacchino helmed the upcoming Disney+ special "Werewolf by Night," which adapts the Marvel horror comic character. Gael García Bernal stars as Jack Russell, the fittingly-named lycanthrope. According to a released plot synopsis, the special centers on monster hunters who gather at the Bloodstone Temple to mourn their late leader. They soon come face-to-face with a monster who may or may not be their doom.
"Werewolf by Night" came out of left-field. The comic and character aren't exactly household names at Marvel and this will be the studio's most overt foray into horror. Plus, Giacchino doesn't have much of a director's portfolio, with...

There's no such thing as risk for the MCU anymore. As long as the active flagship characters like Spider-Man, Thor, and Ant-Man keep packing 'em in theatrically, Kevin Feige and his Marvel Studios brain trust can afford to use Disney+ as a laboratory/playground to bring the company's cult characters to life and see if there's an audience for further adventures — hence "Moon Knight," "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law," and "Wonder Man."
Still, did anyone see "Werewolf by Night" coming? Created and developed in 1972 by the team of Roy Thomas, Jean Thomas, Gerry Conway, and Mike Ploog, the series allowed Marvel to pay homage to the bloody horror comics published by EC, the famously subversive label that spurred uptight cultural scolds to form the censorious Comics Code Authority. The lycanthrope main character, Jack Russell, found enough of a readership to earn a standalone series, but this was still a niche character,...

Michael Giacchino’s Werewolf by Night is Marvel Studios’ first TV special, and the playfully macabre story is the perfect way to ring in the Halloween season on Oct. 7.
Werewolf picks up where Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness left off in terms of the horror genre, as the Disney+ special presentation is an homage to the genre’s filmmaking style of the 1930s and ‘40s. The black-and-white feature, which runs nearly 53 minutes long, follows Jack Russell (Gael Garcia Bernal), who, along with other monster hunters, arrives at Bloodstone Temple in order to compete for the estate’s most sought-after relic. The subsequent hunt leads to perhaps Marvel’s scariest and bloodiest tale to date, and much to the surprise of Werewolf’s director-composer Giacchino, the film still landed a TV-14 rating.

Marvel‘s Halloween special Werewolf by Night will be released through the Disney+ streaming service on October 7th, and now we know exactly how long this special presentation is going to be. Collider reports that the official running time for Werewolf by Night is 52 minutes and 37 seconds.
A secret screening of the special was recently held at Fantastic Fest, and reactions from that screening have started popping up on social media. You can see a collection of reactions below… and they make Werewolf by Night sound very promising, especially for genre fans.
Our secret screening was #WerewolfByNight & it was rad as hell. Totally feels like Marvel took a time machine back to the 1940s to create a badass horror/adventure movie. So many amazing nods to classic horror & so much more too. What a fun surprise! #FantasticFest pic.twitter.com/3cCY8NBj25

Marvel gets into the Halloween spirit this year with a new Disney+ special that introduces new characters to the MCU with a stylish twist. Werewolf by Night presents as a classic horror movie, dropping viewers into the middle of a secret world of monster hunters. The retro stylings and a pair of endearing leads successfully distract, at least for a while, from some of the more conventional MCU traits that prevent it from venturing too far into horror territory.
Ulysses Bloodstone’s passing leaves the throne open for a new leader of his monster hunter guild. His wife has assembled a group of the most ruthless monster slayers at Bloodstone Castle for a ceremonious hunt to determine their new ruler. The winner of the quest must successfully retrieve the Bloodstone from a creature prowling the castle grounds, and the hunters are free to take out their competition if it suits them.
